Connecting Lives, Sharing Cultures
About AFS AFS is a global community of more than 50 Partner organizations that support intercultural learning, principally through exchange programs. AFS has transformed the lives of millions of students, families and individuals through the participation of AFS Volunteers and AFS Host Families worldwide. AFS began as the American Field Service during World Wars I and II, when nearly 5,000 young men volunteered as ambulance drivers. In 1947, under the leadership of Stephen Galatti, AFS organized its first secondary student exchanges. The aim was to build international understanding by helping ordinary people from different parts of the world get to know one another. Nearly seven decades later, more than 12,000 students participate in AFS exchanges and more than 40,000 volunteers support AFS Programs each year. AFS continues to connect people and to support them in sharing their cultures. AFS Statement of Purpose AFS is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

AFS Vision 2020 We pursue our mission by providing quality intercultural learning opportunities for a growing number of young people, families, other stakeholders and wider audiences, thus developing an inclusive community of global citizens determined to build bridges between cultures. Real-life experiential learning, supported by structured reflection, is the core of our programs. We endeavor to link our intercultural learning opportunities to the defining global issues facing humanity. We reach out to past, current and future participants, volunteers and other stakeholders using the media and technology they use. Volunteers and volunteerism are who we are. Our organization brings about changes in lives through and for our global community of volunteers. We are recognized as an educational organization by schools and the appropriate authorities. We work to create a regulatory environment that supports our programs. As a learning organization, we welcome change and critical thinking. We are innovative and entrepreneurial in advancing the strategic directions, working together with others whenever appropriate.

Message from the Chair and the President AFS Vision 2020 guides our efforts, reminding us at every step that AFS “as a learning organization, welcomes change and critical thinking. We are innovative and entrepreneurial in advancing the strategic directions, working together with others whenever appropriate.” The AFS International Board of Trustees is committed to the strategic goals for the year 2013: working with AFS Partners such as India and China, among others, to realize their potential to substantially grow both their hosting and sending programs; helping all AFS Partner organizations worldwide become stronger; creating programs for post-secondary school audiences; and developing AFS operations where we are not currently present, with a particular focus on Africa. To be able to benefit more from its 65-year-old brand, AFS has activated its newly articulated global brand platform to better project itself as the connecting, trustworthy, inspiring and supportive organization it is. This includes a new approach to communications—both visuals and messages—and a training program for staff and volunteers. These tools will help AFS stay consistent internationally, and differentiate itself by delivering on the AFS Brand Positioning: “Intercultural learning experiences supported by local volunteers that change people’s lives and connect them to a worldwide community.” The introduction of Brand-based Marketing is helping AFS Partners build customer-responsive, data-based campaigns that reflect the AFS Brand as they focus strategically on growing with quality in their local markets.
In October 2010, at the AFS World Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, AFS was energized by its recommitment to deliver more comprehensive intercultural learning experiences (ICL). ICL involves the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes of how our cultures shape our worldviews. This helps us to appropriately and effectively adapt our behavior when interacting with members of other cultures. The AFS Network will incorporate even more structured and meaningful ICL opportunities into every aspect of the AFS experience, because ICL is the essence of AFS experiences. AFS faced serious challenges in early 2011: political crises in Tunisia and Egypt and natural disasters in New Zealand and Japan, all countries where AFS is present. The Risk Management Unit at AFS International and AFS Partners in the affected countries did an outstanding job of upholding AFS’s highest priority—ensuring the safety and well-being of our participants. In February 2011, the Supreme Court of New York approved the gift of USD 1.5 million to AFS from the Caravan Institute, a New York-based non-profit organization. This generous gift will allow us to move more quickly to implement the activities planned to support the achievement of our strategic goals. We look forward to an exciting and inspiring year for the AFS Network. Thank you for your interest in AFS and for your support of our work of connecting lives and sharing cultures.

AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. (“AFS International”) is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under the laws of New York State, USA, and is a tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) of the United States of America. AFS Partner organizations (“Partners”) are incorporated under the laws of the country in which they are located and likewise prepare financial statements and tax reports as required by the jurisdictions in their respective countries. Each Partner undergoes an annual fiscal audit and presents to AFS International a copy of the independent auditor’s opinion along with its financial statements. While rules and regulations vary among Partner nations, audits generally follow standards consistent with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). The tables presented are not the result of an audit performed by one firm but represent combined information from audits performed by a number of independent auditors around the world. The information for the three years shown has been gathered from the audited financial statements of all the Partners and AFS International for these years. The resulting tables reflect the combined financial activity in the AFS worldwide network of Partners and include a regional summary for the fiscal year 2009. The compilation of the 2010 financial statements will be available once the annual audits around the world are completed.
