FALL
X 2017 I STARTED DESIGNING MY FINAL PROJECT WITH THE GOAL OF CREATING A PIECE THAT COULD BE USED FOR MANY DIFFERENT PURPOSES. I WANTED TO DESIGN SOMETHING THAT ALLOWED FOR FLEXIBILITY IN TERMS OF UTILITY AND AESTHETICS. I FIRST DESIGNED THE LEGS, WHICH CONSIST OF TWO PANELS CONNECTED THROUGH A BUTT JOINT ON TOP OF WHICH THE SEAT IS PLACED. I CUT A RABBET JOINT ALONG THE TOP OF THE LEG, A HALF INCH FROM THE OUTER EDGE. THIS SIMPLE JOINT ALLOWS FOR A DESIGN THAT IS WEIGHT BEARING, AND IS SYMMETRICAL VISUALLY. FOR THE SEAT, I USED TWO WHITE OAK PIECES AND CROSSED THEM IN AN “X” USING A DADO JOINT.

THIS DESIGN’S PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO SERVE AS A STOOL, BUT IT MAY ALSO BE USED AS A SIDE TABLE. I PARTICULARLY APPRECIATE THE SIMPLICITY OF HOW THE RABBET JOINT FITS WITH THE SEAT. I THINK THAT THE “X” IS UNUSUAL AND A COMPELLING INTERPRETATION OF A SEAT. WITH A LITTLE MORE TIME, DETAILS WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETED TO PERFECTION.

SPRING
HOUSE 2018 THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A PERSONAL HOME USING A LIMITED NUMBER OF RECTILINEAR PLANES ON A SITE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS’ ARBORETUM IN URBANA, ILLINOIS. THE ARBORETUM IS SITUATED ON A PLOT OF LAND JUST EAST OF THE UNIVERSITY’S SOUTH FARMS AND VETERINARY LABORATORY. IT IS HOME TO THE JAPAN HOUSE, A MUSEUM AND INTERACTIVE EDIFICE CELEBRATING THE ART OF TRADITIONAL JAPANESE GARDENS AND ARCHITECTURE. PEOPLE VISIT THE ARBORETUM TO WANDER ITS PATHS AND TO SEE ALL OF THE WILDLIFE AND BIOTA IT IS HOME TO. I CHOSE TO USE THE PENINSULA ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE POND TO BE THE SITE FOR MY PRELIMINARY HOUSE PROJECT. IT OVERLOOKS THE POND AND HOUSES A SET OF TREES. MY GOAL FOR THE HOUSE WAS TO DESIGN A PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE THAT REFLECTS THE NATURE OF THE ARBORETUM. THE SLOPED ROOF MIRRORS THE SUN’S RAYS WHEN THE SUN IS OVERHEAD. IN THE WINTER, THE SUN’S RAYS USUALLY MEASURE ABOUT 54 DEGREES; THE SLOPE OF THE ROOF IS NEARLY THE SAME MEASURE. THE TRANSPARENT PANEL ON THE SOUTHWEST SIDE OF THE HOUSE REFLECTS THE WATER AND ALLOWS THE USER TO FEEL LIKE THEY ARE LIVING IN NATURE INSTEAD OF SEPARATED FROM IT. THE WALL IS MEANT TO BE A MEANS OF CONNECTING THE INDIVIDUAL TO THE WORLD INSTEAD OF SERVING AS A BARRIER.
SLOPE ARCH THE LEFT SECTION OF THE HOUSE UNDER THE SLOPED ROOF IS THE PRIVATE AREA; HOWEVER IT IS TIED TO THE PUBLIC SPACE BY AN ANGLED FRONT WALL. THIS CREATES AN OPEN SPACE THAT SERVES AS A PASSAGEWAY FROM THE PRIVATE TO THE PUBLIC ZONES. THE SECOND STORY IS AN OPEN SPACE THAT IS MEANT TO CREATE A SENSE OF LIGHTNESS AND PEACE THAT IS OFTENTIMES NOT PROVIDED WITH LOW-CEILINGS. THE RECTANGULAR MIDDLE ZONE OF THE BUILDING IS THE PUBLIC SPACE, IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SERVE MANY PURPOSES SUCH AS ENTERTAINING GUESTS OR RELAXING WITH YOUR FAMILY. THIS SPACE IS MEANT TO BE COMMUNAL AND FUNCTIONAL FOR MANY DIFFERENT PURPOSES. THE THIRD ZONE OF THE BUILDING IS THE OUTDOOR SPACE. IT IS DEMARCATED BY THE CANTILEVERED PLANE OR PORCH THAT EXTENDS FROM THE SECOND ZONE TOWARDS THE SOUTH-EAST. ALTHOUGH THE GOAL OF THE HOUSE IS TO TIE TOGETHER THE INDIVDUAL AND NATURE, THIS THIRD SPACE IS MEANT TO PROVIDE DIRECT ACCESS TO NATURE AS WELL AS A SHELTER. THE ARBORETUM HOUSE TAKES DIRECTION FROM NATURAL PROCESSES TO DETERMINE FORM AND SHAPE. IT AIMS TO INTEGRATE THE INDIVIDUAL WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND THEM WHILE PROVIDING DYNAMIC AND MULTI-USE STRUCTURE THAT IS COMFORTABLE AND WELCOMING.
