CHAMPAIGN COMMUNITY CENTER

The Community Center of Champaign is intended as a gathering place for residents of the city in order to engage with one another, to engage in activities of their choosing, or allowing for a place for individual growth. The design intent was to provide for all who visit, the environment and opportunity to become closer to themselves and others through their proximity to natural spaces. The new facility provides ample daylight and views to the surrounding greenspace. The program includes meeting rooms, offices, a yoga studio, and a basketball court. The design focuses these spaces around a central courtyard. ARCH 473 - Professor Yun Kyu Yi

BONEYARD RESIDENCES

Boneyard Residences is a mixed-use, affordable housing building in the heart of Midtown Champaign, Illinois. It is located directly adjacent to the Boneyard Creek Greenway that attracts a diverse group of individuals from the greater Champaign-Urbana area. The vision of this project was to create an environment that caters to human health and well-being through its direct views and proximity to the Boneyard and its surrounding greenspace. The building’s orientatioon and setbacks draw residents and passerby toward Midtown’s natural beauty and serenity in order to provide a healing experience to every user. The ground floor program includes a coworking space and flower shop. The floors above that include 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments. ARCH 372 - Dr. Annamarie Bliss

PROSPECT + REFUGE

Located at Allerton Park in Monticello, Illinois, the site of the project is situated on a sloping hill directly above a river. The goal was to create a space that would serve as a place for both prospect and refuge. The challenge was to determine how to create a space that would allow park users a break from the environmental conditions as well as providing views of the surrounding area. Inspired by the steeples of a church extending skyward, the solution was a glass structure with pointed roof extrusions that draw the viewers eye towards the sky and tree canopy. This was done as a means to compliment all of the environment surrounding the site, not just the sloping river valley below. PROFESSIONAL WORK

During the summer of 2020, I worked for an architectural firm specializing in residential design. Responsibilities included a role as an elevations designer for a lake house that was about to break ground in Michigan. The goal was to assist the client with choosing their options for materials and accurately representing what the future residence will look like. The experience of working on these design development drawings allowed further understanding of the process of selecting and finalizing materials and the relationship that clients may have in communicating their preferences.
