KENT The District of Kent has much to offer if you like to be active, to discover and to explore. Out here you get to experience country life at its best. We are the home to thriving dairy farms but in addition, down our quiet rural roads you can find hazelnut orchards, blueberry farms and various greenhouse operations and our famous Farm House Cheese. A really good way to experience our community is by bike, as a matter of fact, Agassiz is well known for its very popular “Slow Food Bike Tour”. You can more fully immerse yourself in the true country experience by staying at one of our fine bed and breakfasts. If outing, take a walk on the new Mountain View Trail. When you get hungry, there are a number of fine restaurants to choose from; or when all you want is a snack or a fine cup of coffee,
there are choices as well. There are golf courses within a 10 to 15 minute drive from downtown and if you like to fish or hike there are many good spots in the area. We have many great, wide open spaces to enjoy, beginning with our downtown Pioneer Park. If you are in town on a Thursday afternoon, stop in at the Farmers Market for locally grown handmade and baked goods. Take some time to tour the Museum to learn about our rich heritage. This is also where our Tourist Information Centre service is located. We are very friendly here. Stop us on the street and we would be happy to answer any of your questions. There are as many reasons to head for Harrison Hot Springs as there are grains of sand on the beaches. When you’re done there, head down Rockwell Drive and travel along the lake’s east shoreline. Take the time to visit quieter beach fronts, or rest in the soothing spray of a waterfall. Stay outdoors a little longer, with a camping trip to either Hicks Lake or Deer Lake, both of which have their own picturesque views and trail systems.

A Day in History The oldest wooden railroad station still in existence in B.C. now houses the AgassizHarrison Museum where you can see period clothing, artifacts and photos of pioneer life. COMMUNITY SERVICES If there is a service you need, for yourself or your family, the best place to start looking is Agassiz-Harrison Community Services. They operate out of three locations in our community. The main office houses many services, including alcohol and drug services, family counseling and support, youth outreach, youth justice, the food bank, employment services and the very popular Youth Activity Centre. Community Services operates the Thrift Store, where they accept donations and provide a great place to find quality second hand items. And when you shop there, the money stays within the community as all proceeds help AHCS’s many programs. Finally, there is Family Place. A popular hub for parents of babies and young children, the Family Place can be found at 7272 Morrow Road. GET BACK TO THE BOOKS Libraries aren’t the stuffy study halls of yesteryear. If you haven’t stepped into the library yet, or if it’s been a while, this is the year to get back into the groove of reading. LIbraries just aren’t what they used to be. While there is still always a quiet corner to curl up and enjoy a book, or dig into some research material, libraries have expanded to fit the modern lifestyle.

And that means they’re equipped with what you and your family needs to stay informed and entertained. And the Agassiz and Hope libraries are brimming with options for the tech-savvy reader. With an ample supply of e-books, music CDs for every generation, DVDs, and even books on tape and CD, there are fewer barriers to getting your hands on good reading and listening material these days. staff, also work hard to bring fun writing and photography contests into the community. In Agassiz and Hope, the library partners with community groups to help deliver many of the programs families enjoy throughout the year, including Story Time in the Park. And once you’ve crammed all that reading in, you’d be smart to enter one of the Friends of the Library Triva Contests, held annually at each location. HARRISON YACHT CLUB This is a non-profit organization formed for the purposes of promoting safe boating on Harrison Lake. The HYC operates on land formerly occupied by the BC Forest Service and provided by the Village of Harrison Hot Springs. FRASER VALLEY DRAGON BOAT CLUB Established in 2002, this society is committed to assisting and overseeing activities which
will encourage, promote and develop teams within the Fraser Valley for the sole purpose of dragon boating. The club is currently made up of four mixed teams that practice one or two times a week on Harrison Lake. The club is in the process of offering a Youth team (13 to 18) and a Masters team (55+). CENTENNIAL PARK Featuring a skate park, a playground, soccer pitches, baseball fields, and a walking trail, Centennial Park is a great place for any family to stretch their legs. race times and special events, at www.agassizspeedway.com, for events from spring to late fall. FORE! Not one for revving an engine? Grab your clubs, book the day off, and head for the greens. Each course has its own, unique appeal. Try out Harrison Resort Golf Course, Sandpiper Golf Resort or Bridal Falls Golf Course. WATER PLAY Be a tourist for at least one day this summer. Book a parasailing or windsurfing lesson on Harrison Lake. Rent a banana boat, or a Sea-Doo and enjoy a little water action. Test out the inflatable playground on the lake in front of the Harrison Resort. And for the extreme adventurers out there, book a tour in the skies with Far West Helicopters. FISHING We are living in a sportfishing haven, with tourists coming in from all over the world to test our waters. They are looking for the Chinook, Coho, Chum, Sockeye and Pink Salmon that migrate through our region year after year. They are looking for the mighty sturgeon, the largest fresh water fish on the continent. Anyone who has reeled in one of these massive fish knows the true power they possess, and what a thrill it
is to bring one on board the boat. Sturgeon fishing is catch and release only, and the fish are monitored by local guides with the help of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. So whether you’re a belly boater with a fly rod or looking to catch a monster, the Fraser River, Harrison Lake and many other local areas are just waiting for you to discover them.

HISTORY Discover local folklore at Kilby Imagine a place where you could tiptoe back in time, learn some history, throw on some gumboots and get dirty. You can have it all at Kilby Historic Site. Here, you have the choice to be as quiet as a dormouse or to tromp around the yard with the many farm animals. The oldest building in the District
of Kent is here, and so is the haunted Manchester House Hotel. Ask Kilby’s friendly staff and volunteers to show you around. You might be surprised at what you’ll learn about local folklore. See the area as it once was, from farm implements and a fueling station to living quarters and the general store and post office.
Recently, Kilby was delighted to receive government funding for restoration of the main building, to ensure the site can be enjoyed for many more years to come. Also, the Agassiz Harrison Lions Club generously donated $4,000 to the construction of a brand new play area which is now in place — and very popular
among children of all ages. The site has several special dates planned each year, inviting the public to share in something as simple as the change of seasons. Located in Pioneer Park, the Agassiz-Harrison Museum provides a taste of Canadian history with small town flavor. The museum resides in a CPR station built in 1893 and records both local CPR history and extensive archives relating to the Agassiz-Harrison area. Come into our Local-Motive gift shop to see the works of our local artisans and authors.

Milk cans, fire hoses, farming tools, carts and more weren’t able to make the move from the old museum at the research station, the newer site on Pioneer Avenue. So they stayed there, all but forgotten. Now, thanks to a grant from Farm Credit Canada’s AgriSpirit program, these historic artifacts have a new home. The Agassiz-Harrison Museum officially opened its new “barn” this summer, giving thanks to the many people and businesses that helped make the building a reality. The barn will serve as an on-site storage, but viewing
windows will be opened during business hours, to allow the public to have a sneak peek back on the past. “This all used to be housed in a gazebo at the research station,” Judy Pickard says, looking around the barn. Even some of the materials used to build the barn have a bit of history. The smaller windows on the building came from the Valdoorn farm, and the large barn doors that can be seen on the back wall came from the Hatt farm, which was previously the McRae farm. The Agassiz Fall Fair’s Corn Festival has been recognized as the best, too, by BC Fairs. This year’s fair will take place September 14 and 15.
FUN FAIR FACTS: • The Agassiz Fall Fair and Corn Festival is run by a non-profit association called the Agassiz Agricultural and Horticultural Association. • The first Agassiz Fall Fair was held in 1901. • The Kent Agricultural and Horicultural Association was incorporated on November 16, 1899. The name was offically changed on August 20, 1914 to the Agassiz Agricultural and Horticultural Association. • The annual fall fair and corn festival is always held on the second Saturday after Labour Day.
• In 2007 the first Corn Queen was crowned after 58 years of Corn Kings. • The present Agricultural Hall was built in two phases; the kitchen was completed in 1983 and the auditorium in 1987. • Hundreds of volunteers are needed to put on the Fall Fair and Corn Festival. • The primary function of the association is to protect and advance agricultre, horticulture and fruit growing interests in the District of Kent. • Each year an average of 10,000 people attend the Fall Fair and Corn Festival.

HIKING Hiking Rules to live by If you’re the type to be inspired by nature, you’re in good company. There is a dedicated group called the Harrison Hikers, who know the local trails like the back of their hands. But even those who travel by trail regularly know that the unexpected can arise. They advise you follow these tips when hitting the trails — whether you’re a novice setting out for the first time, or an experienced hiker. • Never hike alone. • Travel in groups of at least four. • Hike at the speed of the slowest member of the group. • Stay on the trail. • Resist the temptation to collect trees, plants or flowers. • Respect wildlife. • Never approach or feed bears or other wild animals. • Always pack out what you take in. Don’t bury your trash. • Keep pets on leash at all times.

It truly is the journey, not the destination, that makes this area a great place to explore. From the wild edges of the Fraser River to our pristine lake shores, there are plenty of “stones left unturned.” And from the highest eastern peaks to the rolling hills that flow into the west, there are many “paths less travelled.” Whether you’re up for a leisurely walk, a rugged trail or a breathtaking hike, here’s a guide to some of our popular sites.
Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional Park
Mount Cheam Trail
Spend some time at the Cheam Wetlands and you’ll leave with a better understanding of nature. Here, 93 hectares of marsh, lake and uplands have been protected as a nature park. The park is home to many bird, animal and insect species, including deer. It is unsuitable for dog walking, fishing or boating, but the perfect spot for a picnic and a short hike. Cheam Wetlands is 6km south of Agassiz. Take the east exit off the roundabout, following Yale Road to Elgey Road.
Towering 7,000 ft above us every day, how many of us have taken the time to climb to the top? This hike requires a long drive, and a 4x4 vehicle with adequate clearance.
Bridal Falls
On Hwy 1, take the Vedder exit and drive through Sardis to Chilliwack Lake Road.Drive until the road crosses Chilliwack River for the second time. Take the forest service road on your left, to Chipmunk Road. Follow Chipmunk Road to Mount Cheam Trailhead (about ½ hr) where the road ends at the tree line. This is where your two to three hour hike begins. Go on a sunny day, bring lots of water, and don’t forget your camera!
This is the sixth highest waterfall in Canada, dropping 122 metres to the valley floor at Bridal Falls Provincial Park before making its way to the mighty Fraser River. Located close to the Bridal Falls exit on Highway 1, this spot makes a great picnic destination, complete with hiking trails right to the base of the falls, rolling grassy areas and a rain forest canopy perfect for escaping the summer heat.

Campbell Lake Hiking Trail This is a forest hike with good views of Harrison Lake at the top. For this hike, start at the base of the mountain, at Balsam Avenue and Hot Springs Road in Harrison Hot Springs, near the water reservoir. This is a nine km hike, with great views at the top.

EAGLE FESTIVAL Each year up to 1,200 bald eagles return to the HarrisionChehalis delta as the salmon are running. They travel from miles around to be here, and so do bird watchers. While these majestic raptors can be seen for weeks throughout Chilliwack, Agassiz and Harrison Mills, there is one weekend dedicated to learning more about eagles. The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival, held November 17 and 18 in 2012, includes several organized events in Harrison Mills designed to educate the public about raptors and their current plights. The enormously popular festival takes place in perhaps the most biologically diverse and important areas in British Columbia. Deep in the heart of “Sasquatch Country” you
will find North America’s third largest gathering of bald eagles. The raptors are drawn to the area by the millions of spawning salmon that travel up the Fraser River to tributaries such as the Harrison River. The estuary is also home to incredible wildlife such as trumpeter swans, ducks, seal, bear, coyote, deer and the great white sturgeon. For thousands of years the First Nation Peoples have lived here in harmony with the land and water and today they work with the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival to welcome visitors to teach and share the knowledge they have gained over the ages. The festival weekend is also a chance for an annual bird count and volunteers count bald eagles, trumpeter swans and great blue herons.
If you head out this fall for a closer look at the bald eagles, there is wildlife viewing etiquette to follow. 1. Keep your distance: Use binoculars, spotting scopes and telephoto lens. ‘Getting closer’ causes the subject to move away. 2. Stay on trails: Straying off them not only damages or destroys sensitive habitat but infringes on the wildlife’s space. 3. Respect your fellow viewing enthusiasts: Once you’ve had a chance to have a good look, move on. 4. Walk slowly and speak quietly; Nothing can spook wildlife faster than someone running towards it shouting “look at the …….”

5. Watch carefully – respect the ‘comfort zone’: all wildlife, including birds, have a ‘comfort zone’ which can vary dramatically depending on species, environment or previous experience. Diagonal rather than direct: If you must move closer to a subject, try a diagonal approach, it is perceived as being less of a threat.
