A 20-day movie shoot finished with a bang on Saturday afternoon in Agassiz, with the explosion of a rigged cube van along Hwy. 7. A film crew had the bypass behind the railway tracks shut down for most of the day, while shooting the film Recoil. It was the same stretch of road that drew producers of the X-Men movie to town several years ago. (On set, one crew member pointed out the bit of newer blacktop that marks where the road needed replacing.) Crew members from Pacific West Special Effects spent hours setting up

the explosion scene. They only had one chance to get it right, said location manager Jamie Lake. "We only have the one truck," he said. But as with any movie set, not everything was as it seemed. While the van's chassis was real, the entire truck had been re-built with balsa wood, and designed to explode easily. After a brief safety meeting for everyone on set, it was time to film. The star of the show, wrestling sensation Stone Cold Steve Austin, is handed a road flare, and given his instructions. After hours of preparation, the FX CONTINUED ON 3

Fraser River flood threat being monitored Weather conditions don't pose reason for concern yet
Staff at the River Forecast Centre are watching computer simulations and the thermometer, trying to determine if the Fraser River will flood this year. Agassiz emergency coordinator Roger Poulton said that while he's watching levels, he doesn't see a reason to worry — yet. "This is not a good thing to have a lot of rain, but I'm not that concerned yet," he said Monday.
The Fraser basin overall has a snowpack that is 115 per cent of normal, according to David Campbell, of the B.C. River Forecast Centre. Those are snow conditions experienced one year in 10. The snowpacks in the upper Fraser and Thompson watersheds are the most significant contributors to water flows in the Fraser Valley, and there the snowpack is not as high, about 105 to 110 per cent of normal.
The Mission/ Harrison area has much more snow than normal, over 150 per cent. However, this area is the source of relatively little freshet overall, accounting for only five to eight per cent of the Fraser river flow. “We’re modelling, and keeping an eye on weather conditions,” he said. The Fraser basin is a large geographic area. For flooding to occur, there would have to be
an extended period of hot weather affecting most of the province – for five days or more, followed by a period of intense rainfall. In 2007, there was a major flood threat in the region. Dikes protecting Abbotsford and Mission were raised, and 160 soldiers with the 39 Canadian Brigade Group were stationed in Aldergrove, ready to assist. At that time, the Fraser basin snowpack
was 138 per cent of normal. Weather

District garbage talk tonight at Agricultural Hall A plan for getting rid of garbage and recyclables is being discussed at an FVRD open house tonight in Agassiz. The meeting will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall on Pioneer Avenue. In 2009 the first round of public consultation was completed. This feedback, along with input from member municipalities was considered by the FVRD and its Advisory Committee when developing the updated Draft Solid Waste Management Plan which is now ready for public review," a press release from the regional

The second target challenges all sectors to divert at least 70% of their material from landfills by 2016, working towards eventual Zero Waste." I got to travel around the world, and express myself as a character I love, Stone Cold Steve Austin. I was lucky enough to do that for 15 years." It was the support of his family that got him to the top, he added. "They were my biggest fans." Recoil is classed as a movie of the week on the BC Film Industry's website. crew yelled the magic words: "Effects are hot." Everyone took their places, cameras rolled, Austin walked to the van, tossed the stick, and just seconds later, an explosion rocked the set. Cameras still rolling, Austin walks away from the van, and the scene is over. "I couldn't have imagined it any better," producer Tara CowellPlain said. All in all, a good day at work, Austin told the Observer. "No dialogue today," he said. "Maybe one line, I got to blow something up and kick a guy's ass. I'd say that's a pretty good day in the office." The movie includes plenty
of fight scenes, shot around Vancouver and Fraser Valley, in Abbotsford, Langley, Maple Ridge and Burnaby. Shooting wrapped up Sunday. "All the fight scenes are me," Austin said. While he had a long career in the wrestling ring, he's recently forayed into films and television. "This is my seventh or eight movie," he said. "I'm starting to get in a groove, get comfortable. At my age, I'm just happy to be working." And he's working a lot, just finishing the first season of his reality show Tough Enough, which airs on the USA Network and now in Canada on the Fight Network. EJ Link’s ride to BC Children’s Hospital was another success. This April 10 marked the third time the Agassiz teen has rallied his friends together for a bike ride to Vancouver. Link, Nikica Nikolic and Parabhjot Singh managed to raise $3,300 this year, from contributions from community members. This year, Link even managed to get a corporate sponsor. “Dominos was a big help,” he says, giving him pizzas on certain lunch hours to sell to classmates and teachers. The ride was a little cooler than last year’s, and started with a bit of a hitch. “This year was a bit harder because of the rain and the cold,” he says. “But the worst part was that at the bottom of Mt. Woodside, my tire popped.” His family follows the trio,

Writing for the ‘Soul’ Local writer published in Chicken Soup book Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
They say if you want to be a writer, then write. Helen Splane-Dowd has been writing for decades — quietly, but prolifically. Her website (www. occupytillicome.com) has a devout following, and pages upon pages of poems, stories and even Bible studies. She puts everything she writes up on the site, and emails out to her readers daily. And now, one of those online stories is published in a book, too. Originally titled Shadow and Chick, the short story tells of a mysterious cat that comes into the writer’s life. It was a perfect fit for the newest Chicken Soup for the Soul compilation, My Cat’s Life. “I wrote it a fair while ago, she says, but sent the story into the publisher this February. It wasn’t long before she heard it was accepted to be in the book.
JESSICA PETERS / OBSERVER
Helen Splane-Dowd has been published twice now, once in 2004 and most recently as part of the latest Chicken Soup for the Soul collection, My Cat’s Life.
And now, that book has hit store shelves. This isn’t the first time Splane-Dowd has been
published. In 2004, she struck a deal with Publish America for her full-length novel If You
Only Knew. “I call it faction, she says. “Fiction based on fact. It’s set during and after the depression, throughout the Second World War, and her mother is the main character. It’s a story she wanted to write until childhood. But it took until 1985 to get started, in a manner than most writers today wouldn’t think of. “I wrote it all out in longhand waiting for my husband in the car, she explains. “He was a salesman, and we traveled. When she had the chance, she got a word processor, and typed out what she had already written. Then, she upgraded to a home computer and finished the book entirely. She’s been managing her own website for 10 years now, first with the help of a web master and now on her own from her home in Agassiz. “I learned the hard
way, and I still do it all in HTML, she says. “I don’t even know anything about blogs or twitter or anything like that. But she certainly knows how to write. Watch for Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Cat’s Life in local bookstores. The book is also available through the Fraser Valley Regional Library system.

Maclagan moves toward mystic Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
It’s hard for any art collector to downsize, but even harder for a longtime artist. Opinion Lesson for Liberals While Premier Christy Clark will soon be able to take her seat in the B.C. Legislature, the close race she endured in the Vancouver-Point Grey byelection should cause her, and the party, to stop and think. In a short campaign that partially overlapped the federal election, Clark managed to win the seat by less than 600 votes — 7,371 to 6,776 for the NDP’s David Eby. And she did so without facing a candidate from the resurgent BC Conservatives, who decided to follow tradition and not contest the seat, when it was a byelection involving the sitting premier. Clark’s honeymoon with the public is definitely over. This is partially due to the type of campaign she ran. She refused to attend any all-candidates debate, or take any hard questions, and isolated herself in a bubble. But it is also due to the continued unpopularity of the BC Liberals, particularly over the HST, but also over numerous other issues such as education funding, health care waiting lists, the BC Rail sale, and the general malaise which seems to have come over the province. The HST is Clark’s most press-
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
ing problem. It has dogged the BC Liberals for almost two years, and caused her predecessor to resign. A recent report by an independent panel shows that the tax is costing ordinary working people a substantial amount of money for no apparent benefit. A referendum on whether to kill the tax will be conducted by mail in June and July, and seems highly unlikely to prove favourable to the tax. Clark is musing about calling an election in the early fall, but if the HST is rejected in the referendum, and the Conservatives surge to any appreciable extent, it seems quite likely that the NDP will return to power after a 10-year absence. This certainly isn’t the outcome her party had in mind when it selected her as its new leader. The BC Liberals need to stop and think about whether an early election is such a good thing, and come up with truly “family friendly” policies which actually allow people to keep some of the money they earn in their pocket. A good first step would be reducing the HST rate. Black Press

Stick men and straw men debate the HST
B.C. VIEWS
Tom Fletcher By now you’ve probably been exposed to the B.C. government’s “stick man” ad campaign to raise awareness of the harmonized sales tax. Stick men, or rather stick persons, sort out conflicting claims about the tax by going to the B.C. government’s website to get an accurate summary of what is and isn’t costing them more. Later versions will no doubt feature stick persons checking their mail for brochures offering arguments for and against the HST, and of course, those all-important mail-in ballots that will arrive in June. This is an urgent pre-requisite to an informed vote. Anyone who listens in to a telephone town hall or phone-in show, or gets reader
feedback such as I receive, knows that the basic facts are still widely misunderstood. So what does the NDP opposition focus on? The ads cost $5 million, grumbles NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston. Add that to town halls and mailers and the referendum funding boils down to $7 million for pro-HST and a mere $250,000 for the FightHST effort. This is a classic “straw man” argument, where one sets up a false premise and then knocks it down. The ads do not advocate, they merely inform. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson propped up the NDP’s oldest scarecrow, that big “Liberal donor corporations” are the main beneficiaries of the HST. This is a vital point for rural B.C., which depends on resource industries with huge machinery investments, and he has it exactly wrong. In fact the entire ‘big business benefits most from HST’ narrative is false. Vancouver tax lawyer David

Anyone who listens to public debate knows the basic facts about the HST are still widely misunderstood In 24 pages, Robertson has written the clearest analysis I’ve seen so far, including a thorough demolition of Vander Zalm's crude scare campaign known as FightHST, which has singled out banks and large resource companies. Robertson notes that banks are actually worse off. “…unlike most businesses, banks, financial institutions and

insurance companies cannot recover GST/HST they pay on expenses,” he writes. They actually pay more under HST than they did under the old provincial sales tax (PST). As for FightHST’s other specified villains, “large corporations” and “large resource companies,” their machinery and production equipment were long ago exempted from sales tax. No change there. “What the PST legislation did not contain were PST exemptions aimed specifically at small, independent businesses,” Robertson writes. “So construction workers like welders, plumbers, electricians and other tradespersons had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their work trucks, tools and equipment that they used to earn a living; retailers and corner store operators had to pay an additional seven per cent on their shelving, refrigerators and cash registers; accountants and other professionals had to pay PST on their office furniture, computers

Obviously, Big Labour doesn’t like all these independent contractors. Therefore the NDP must also “fight” HST. I’ve mentioned before that the NDP-Vander Zalm axis of nonsense wants to deprive the poor of a modest tax shift in their favour, paid for by voluntary purchases of more affluent consumers. I’ve talked about the trend towards self-employment and small business as the Canadian economy adapts in a fast-changing world. You may not like that trend, and you may wish that everyone could have a union job with an employersubsidized pension. That’s not what is happening today. Mailbag Liberty with the facts Purse returned Easter Sunday John Allen has demonstrated again his unrivaled ability to be entertaining with his writing style. Unfortunately, he does so by sometimes taking liberty with the facts. Contrary to what he stated in his letter to your newspaper of May 12, I was not the minister of environment when a $5 per day fee for parking was implemented in some BC Parks to help offset the cost of cleaning and maintaining them. I was, however, the minister of
environment who directed the price of seasonal parking passes be cut in half, and that the daily parking rate be reduced by 40 per cent to a maximum of $3 per day. Premier Christy Clark has now decided to remove the fee altogether, so it won’t cost anyone to go for a walk at Greenpoint in Sasquatch Park. Barry Penner, MLA Chilliwack-Hope & BC’s Attorney General

I would like to relate an incident that happened in a big Walmart store near Seattle Easter weekend. My wife, son's family and I had driven down from Canada to watch our daughter compete in a West Coast Swing dance competition. On the way home, my son and his wife had gone into the Walmart store whilst my wife fed their one-year-old daughter in the back seat of the car. (I was reading a good book.) When the child was finished, my wife got our granddaughter out and I grabbed a shopping cart. As it was quite windy and I move slowly when I first get out of a car, my wife went ahead with the child to get her out of the wind. Wouldn't you know it, after a few yards, I realized I had one of those carts. You know the type that pull to the left and has a wheel that wobbles like crazy. I dumped the cart and found a better one and joined them in the store. The first thing she said as we sat the baby in the cart was "where is my purse?" I had not noticed but she had put it in the buggy – the one I had dumped in the parking lot because of the wobbly wheel.
Her purse had her driver's license, her cash, credit cards, cell phone and her passport. I dashed as fast as I can dash, which is not very, and located the dumped cart. No purse. It had been no more than a minute or so but the purse was gone. So, here we were without identification and most important, no passport to get back into Canada. My wife went to customer service and got in line and I went to search garbage cans in the hopes that some things that would be useless to a thief but invaluable to us, had been dumped. I was back at the car empty-handed when my wife came strutting through the parking lot, purse in hand. Some good Samaritan had found it and done the right thing. Easter Sunday is a good time to lose your purse. The person who turned in the purse did not leave a name but we thank them, whoever they are! I have no clue what we would have done otherwise. Building originally a CPR station
On Monday, January 30, 1893, Agassiz’s first CPR Station burned to the ground. Anywhere from 12 to 15 passengers had been arriving or departing daily from Friday to Monday. The station served as a major link to the spa hotel at Harrison Hot Springs and it became a social centre for those receiving and transporting mail, supplies and travelers. By August of 1893, a second station, built 30 feet further to the west was being erected. The new station was designed by Edward Colanna, incorporated CPR’s design of the 1890s. The gambrel roofed structure would sport fish scale shingles, scroll saw work and drop siding. It was described as a “minor” station of the onesided variety and today stands as one of the oldest wooden CPR station in the province of B.C. Mr. Colonna later became prominent in art nouveau and the Agassiz building is one of the last remaining structures in his career. Used as a station until 1972, it was then purchased by the Agassiz-Harrison Historical Society

A museum on the move
for $1 on September 3, 1985, thus saving the building from demolition. The society, incorporated in May, 1980 had been looking for a home for the artifacts and pictures which had been collected over the years. A lease for approximately one acre of property at Agriculture Canada’s Agassiz Research Station was negotiated and signed on October 11, 1985. On a very cold Friday, November 22, 1985, Agassiz Station was physically moved to a new site away from the tracks. Fundraising, began in 1984, continued and new construction included a foundation, shake roof, partial restoration and a renovated interior. The windows were reproduced as was the main floor flooring and “V” joint wood work. Drop siding was cut to replace the missing pieces and a section of track was laid using vintage rails. Grants received included funds for the hiring of six employees for work on various parts of the project both inside and out. The building interior has been slightly modified to accommodate a gift shop, research library, meeting room, administration office and a large gallery for the display of local history and travelling exhibits. The waiting room and station master’s office have been recreated to reflect the original, and include a number of CPR artifacts. With the hard work of the AgassizHarrison Historical Society’s office manager, and many volunteers the Agassiz-Harrison Museum opened with a gala opening on May 24, 1986.
At that time it was the society’s hope that the new museum would add to the memories of all visitors both pioneers and tourists, who live and come to the community. The station/museum has had an interesting life. In 2003 it was on the move once again. After an invitation by the District of Kent, it was agreed that the CPR station should return to its “home” beside the tracks in Pioneer Park. Funding was established and the CPR station was moving back. The position is not quite in the original site and for aesthetics it was turned around so that the entrance would face Pioneer Avenue. Since then the museum has become a major focal point in the downtown core of Agassiz. Over the last 25 year the society’s volunteers have accumulated many hours as they continue in the preservation of the old station, local history, and archives and welcoming visitors to the community. We look forward to you joining with us as we celebrate on Sunday, May 22. Come down, have a piece of cake, enjoy the entertainment, tour the museum and enjoy the new exhibits being featured for the 2011 season. The new exhibits for the season are: 125 years of CPR in Agassiz, Girl Guiding in our community and The Agassiz Harrison Museum 25th Anniversary. We look forward to being part of the community for years to come. Agassiz-Harrison Museum’s 25th Celebration will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday May 22 at the museum. - Submitted by Judy Pickard, from the Agassiz Harrison Museum

With much credit to the directing of Janice Bearisto and help from Ron Rodger, the show was acclaimed “the best ever.” There were hisses for the villain, cheers for the hero, sighs for the heroine and
amens for the widow. Mrs. F. Booth played the pious widow, Sandra Bowett the demure daughter, Joe Brown the brave hero, Hilde Funk the amorous admirer and Gloria Hollinshead the clever plotter. When the villain George Zebroff appeared, there was even a distinct smell of sulphur. The cast included Don MacCallum, Frank Parton, Cliff Jewkes, Hanne Ten Bos and Ron Rodger.
A large chorus entertained between the scenes with singing. T Mr. Tom Novis of Rosedale was appointed secretary-treasurer of Agassiz-Harrison School District# 76, replacing Mr. W. Daubney. T Mr. and Mrs. John Rodger moved from their farm on Hot Springs Road to a house on Limbert Road where they would stay until the end of the school term. Mr. and Mrs. Jonker of Rosedale
took over the farm. T All logging camps on Harrison Lake were going full steam. The last camp to begin was Lakburg

Agassiz’s own Brandon Wolkosky particpated in the 2011 RCMP Youth Academy held at Camp Stillwood from April 21-29. The camp is offered to high school students in Grades 11 and 12, and gives them the opportunity to experience what training in depot, the RCMP training grounds in Regina, would be like. Wolkosky had been considering a career in policing and was encouraged by family and friends to give the camp a try. After completing the course, Wolkosky is even more excited about his potential career. “I felt really good, I felt like I had accomplished a lot and not everyone gets (that opportunity) so I felt pretty good about it.” The Grade 12 student says that while the physical training was hard, the challenge it provided was his favourite part. “My favourite part of the camp was the Doug Louis run, which was

A taste of police life running up and down a hill for 20 minutes. “The story behind it was really inspirational and they really pumped us up and I really pushed myself.” The more daunting task for Wolkosky was the classroom component. After getting up at 5 a.m. every morning and training, it’s hard to focus on sitting in a classroom, taking notes to prepare for the exam, he says. Wolkosky says he definitely recommends the RCMP Youth Academy camp for students considering pursuing a policing career. “Prepare physically,” he advises. “I play a lot of sports and thought the workouts were still pretty hard.” And if you cheat, your punishment is even more exercise. “If you don’t think something is fair, just say ‘Yes, constable,’ and get over it,” he warns. “It’s a small taste of what you’d have to do to be a police officer.” news@ahobserver.com

CENSUS RECENSEMENT Important notice to all residents of Canada Canada’s next census will be held in May 2011. Early in May, yellow census packages will be delivered to every dwelling in Canada, providing residents the information they need to complete the census online or on paper. Completed questionnaires will provide valuable information that will be used to make decisions about your neighbourhood and community. Census information is important for all communities and is vital for planning services such as schools, daycare, police services and fire protection. For more information about the 2011 Census, visit www.census2011.gc.ca.
Secondary Suites The District of Kent has a number of information guides that can help homeowners who are considering constructing a Secondary Suite, legalizing an existing suite, or making their home “suite ready” for the future. The guides provide an overview of the District of Kent and BC Building Code requirements for Secondary Suites as well as steps required to legalize an existing Secondary Suite. It is important for homeowners to understand that the primary purpose of legalization of a Secondary Suite is for the safety of the building occupants. An existing illegal Secondary Suite puts the occupants and homeowner at risk. Should an unfortunate incident occur within a building with an illegal suite, the homeowner may be held liable and is at risk of not being covered by their insurance. We encourage homeowners to read the BC Occupiers Liability Act and talk to their insurance provider. The Secondary Suite information guides are available on the District of Kent’s website: www.district.kent.bc.ca or can be picked up at District Hall located at 7170 Cheam Avenue. For more information please contact Darcey Kohuch, Director of Development Services at (604) 796-2235.

GET PREPARED! Careful planning; the key to getting through an emergency 72 hours…Is your family prepared? Canada is a vast country with extreme weather conditions and dramatic geological features. Landslides, flooding, storm surges, earthquakes and other hazards are all potential threats in Canada. But with some careful planning and preparation, Canadians can learn how to deal with these emergencies and minimize the impact to their families and property. Emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility. While governments at all levels are working hard to keep Canada safe, individual Canadians also have an important role to play in preparing for emergencies. Emergency preparedness experts consistently say that by taking a few simple steps, such as knowing the risks specific to your community , making a plan to help you and your family know what to do, and getting an emergency kit that includes some basic supplies to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency, you are taking a responsible and necessary step to protect yourself and your family from all types of emergencies. For more information on Kent Harrison Emergency Program, please contact Roger Poulton at 604-798-2528. For information on Emergency Preparedness see www.getprepared.ca.
