Cancer survivor hopes for big Terry Fox Run turnout
Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
Two-time cancer survivor Eileen Shepherd is counting on Hope residents to take part in this weekend's Terry Fox Run. "Most of us know the Terry Fox story, and he remains in the hearts of all of us," she says. "Most of us know someone who has had cancer, some of whom have succumbed to the dreaded disease." Terry Fox began the Marathon of Hope 31 years ago, dipping his cial leg into the Atlantic Ocean at little dip in the water started his proposed run across Canada, a total of over 8,000 miles. His aim was to raise money for cancer research, and he was hoping
for $1 for each Canadian citizen. Terry's cancer returned 143 days under Bay, Ont. He had run about 3,000 miles. He died in September, 1981.
More than $500 million has already been raised in the name of Terry Fox, with much support from Fox's mother Betty, who also passed away recently.

In Hope, as in over 50 other cities, the Terry Fox Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Hope Recreation Centre at 9 a.m. People can run, walk, cycle, push a baby stroller or use a walker, doing any distance cial run is 5 km. When Myles McKie was in elementary school, his teachers couldn’t get him near a book. He wanted nothing to do with them. When he was in Grade 8, he still wouldn’t read. Couldn’t read. He simply wasn’t interested. Then in Grade 9, he decided picking up a book wasn’t all that bad. Within a year, he was reading at a Grade 12 level. Why? Because he was ready. McKie told this story, with the help of his mother Anita McKie, to the students of Kent elementary school Tuesday afternoon. The duo travel around schools, talking about their experiences with autism. McKie has Asperger’s Syndrome, a higher functioning form of autism. But listening to his story opened the audience’s understanding of McKie’s abilities. “Who was your first friend? one student asked. “Did you have an imaginary friend? another one wanted to know. Most wanted to know how he made it through school, and if people teased him. No, he told them, he wasn’t teased. His first friend? His mom set up a partnership with another kid, and that relationship is still strong. Now, McKie has too many friends to count. “I don’t have enough fingers to count them! he told the students, laughing. And that imaginary friend? Not one his mom knew about. McKie has been promoting autism awareness by speaking publicly for the past five years. As a person with a form of autism, speaking publicly doesn’t come naturally. Continued on 4

Missing man found on gravel bar Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
Police confirmed Saturday morning that Christopher Hannaford was the man who was found dead last Friday afternoon. Hannaford, 27, was last seen on a gravel bar near Old Orchard Campground on Kennedy Road in Harrison Mills, just east of Agassiz. A body was found on a gravel bar in the same area at about 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. The deceased’s brother Jonathan waited for about two hours on the riverbank Friday evening, as police, a coroner and Kent Harrison Search and Rescue retrieved a then-unidentified body from a gravel bar not far from the riverside campground. It was a sombre wait as the sun set, as recreational boaters and fishermen came and went from the boat launch near the Harrison River bridge. Hannaford’s body was brought to shore at about 7:20 p.m., and the brother was given the chance to identify the body aboard the SAR boat. When the body was brought onto the dock, SAR members, RCMP, Hannaford and his friend all stood silently for a minute or two, before a visibly distraught Hannaford returned to his vehicle. Hannaford and his friend had just arrived in the area from out of province. RCMP media liaison Cst. Tracy Wolbeck confirmed with Black Press Saturday morning that the body was indeed Christopher Hannaford. “Although this is a very sad ending to a long and involved search, Chris’s family now has the closure

they need to move on, said Cst. Wolbeck. She confirmed that Hannaford’s brother had arrived from Newfoundland on the day his brother’s body was discovered and was able to assist police in making a positive identification. The cause of death will not be released until a full coroner’s examination has been completed. Wolbeck thanked everyone who was involved in the search for Christopher Hannaford. Last Friday, a man had called The Observer’s sister paper, The Chilliwack Progress, at about 4:15 p.m., saying that his brother had found the body. Police say the two brothers had been fishing in the area, not far from where Hannaford is thought to have fallen in the water. Ironically, the search for Hannaford had been scaled back on Friday, after an RCMP

Safe return a priority
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Kienan Hebert’s return home is as remarkable as it is fortunate. But it seems more, beyond an unlocked door. Twelve hours after the three-year-old boy’s family made an emotional plea to his captor, a 911 call was received at 3 a.m. Sunday that he was back in his home, where he was found sleeping with the three blankets that went missing with him four days before. Questions remain how this occurred, how an abductor could return to the scene of the crime undetected and escape arrest. The unfenced Sparwood property is in a new subdivision with only one road in and out. Police, in response to criticism that the suspect, Randall Hopley, remains at large, are only admitting they “facilitated” the return. The family had vacated the house and was staying with neighbours. They left the doors unlocked. Police, who had previously been monitoring the area, were no where to be seen. And that’s the way it had to be. If the suspect felt in danger, he might have run, and maybe Kienan wouldn’t be back with his family right now. The boy’s safety was all that mattered. The fact he was returned and is safe after being abducted, as police have said, is rare. And for that, police are due our greatest respect. Revealing much more about how this was accomplished would only benefit other potential abductors. What’s more important is the health and happiness of Kienan and his family. Their ordeal is not over. And now that police have arrested their lone suspect – a convicted sex offender with a long list of break-and-enters, who admitted in court to trying to remove another child from a house in 2007 – we can look at fixing the justice system that allows people like him to roam free. – Black Press

Tom Fletcher B.C.’s private power producers held a news conference here in the capital last week, to plead with the B.C. government not to back down from its target of self-sufficiency in clean energy by 2016. The review panel looking at BC Hydro rates recommended that one way the utility might save money would be to change the definition of self-sufficiency. Currently that means having enough domestic clean electricity supply even in low water years. The B.C. Clean Energy Association was supported by University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, who wants B.C. to continue to develop its unique clean energy resources. That will reduce BC
Hydro’s reliance on the open electricity market, and help to reduce demand for further coal and natural gas generation. Weaver says people still skeptical about climate change should check out the current state of Arctic sea ice. It has retreated drastically again this summer and may reach an even smaller size than it did in 2007, which was the biggest melt since satellite records became available in 1979. The five greatest ice retreats have been in the past five years. The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Centre reported Sept. 6 that both the Northwest Passage through Canada’s Arctic and the sea route north of Russia “appear to be open.” Another supporter is Judith Sayers, a former chief from Nuu-Chah-Nulth territory on Vancouver Island, who now teaches aboriginal law at the University of Victoria. She talked about how a small hydro power project near Port

Dokie project near Chetwynd, went broke, then was taken over and completed by Plutonic Power Corp and General Electric. Here’s an indication of how quickly the clean energy field is evolving: This year Plutonic merged with Magma Energy Corp., which has geothermal assets in Iceland and Nevada. The merged company, Alterra Power Corp., has backed away from the vast Bute Inlet runof-river proposal on the B.C. coast, but its nearby East Toba and Montrose river generators and the Dokie wind farm have performed better than expected. The Bute project won’t go anywhere until the North American power market changes dramatically. Currently the market is low, due mainly to an abundance of cheap natural gas and government-subsidized wind power in the U.S. Horgan claims private invest-

ment is a nefarious scheme to create a “parallel generating system” for private profit. That seems to be his key criterion for acceptable small hydro: as long as nobody makes a profit. Professional environmentalists claim rivers have been destroyed. Their favourite villain, Ashlu Creek near Squamish, has been running smoothly for nearly two years, its critics silenced. A new runof-river cluster around Harrison Lake has energized two remote native villages. I’ve seen these things, from construction stage to mature operation. If that’s your idea of devastation, you should get out more, and acquaint yourself with the history of logging in particular. And if you’re going to insinuate that this is political corruption, as Horgan does, you need a better case than the flimsy one he has presented so far. tfletcher@blackpress.ca twitter.com/tomfletcherbc

The 31st year of the Terry Fox Run/Walk is coming up soon in Hope. Terry had a dream in l980 to try to raise $1 for every Canadian citizen. To date, over $500 million has been raised in his name. We cannot let his dream to fight the dreaded cancer die. We all are touched by this disease in one way or another, and as Terry said in Toronto, "somewhere the hurting
has to stop!" Please join with others here in Hope to walk, run, cycle or stroll to show your support. Bring a friend, a neighbour and a donation or a pledge. If you can't participate, drop by the recreation centre with a donation. Every dollar helps. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the "run" starts at 9 a.m. The official distance is 5 km, but you can go
just as far as you can or want to! Incidentally, Terry ran about 3,000 miles, and had to stop as you know because cancer had returned. We must carry on with "Terry's dream" and help find a cure. See you there! Eileen Shepherd Volunteer & cancer survivor
Medical system does work when you need it Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! On the night of August 30/31, my husband Al, who has always been active and healthy, had severe groin and back pain. We called 911 at about midnight and within 10 minutes two paramedics arrived from Agassiz. Shortly after that an Advanced Life Support team arrived. They took him to Chilliwack General Hospital and by the time I arrived at the hospital the ER team in Chilliwack had done an ultrasound, found something, and were preparing to follow-up with a CT Scan. The rest of the ER team were on the phone locating a hospital that could put together a surgical team to try to save my husband’s life. He was suffering an abdominal aortic aneurysm (the silent killer). Abbotsford was our next destination. He was given less than a 50 per cent chance of surviving the trip to Abbotsford, as the artery had started dissecting but he did survive and was immediately taken into surgery (just before 3 a.m.). At that point the nurses told me he had a 50/50 chance of making it through the surgery. This wonderful surgical team lead by Dr. Lewis and Dr. Fry were able to do an EVAR to repair the artery, and shortly after 7 a.m. Al was in FEEDBACK, COMMENTS AND LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CAN BE SUBMITTED BY EMAIL: NEWS@AHOBSERVER. COM
ICU. We were warned that he was not out of the woods yet as the next 24 to 48 hours were critical. Within 36 hours Al was moved from ICU to high acuity and then 48 hours later from high acuity to post surgical. He was released from hospital on Wednesday, September 7 and is expected to make a full recovery. I have never had
much good to say about our medical system with long waits in emergency and friends waiting months and months for specialty tests but after this experience I can only praise this system because in an extreme emergency it is there for us. I also would like to say a big thank you to the Agassiz paramedics, the
advanced life support paramedics, all the Chilliwack ER staff, the Abbottsford ER staff, Dr. Lewis, Dr. Fry and their surgical team, the ICU, high acuity and post surgical nurses that took such good care of Al during his seven-day stay in Abbotsford Hospital. Sandi Cassidy Harrison Hot Springs

Free Round-Up Event
50 Years Ago, 1961 • The 1961 Fall Fair Parade was hailed as a great success. A highlight of the parade was the capture of sasquatch hunter John Green by the sasquatch. Numerous floats from neighbouring communities of Hope, Haney and Chilliwack added to the long and colourful parade. • The Harrison Hot Springs Council made the final payment on the $25,000 borrowed 10 years previously to build the dyke. The Village declared itself free of direct debt, owing no money other than the school
All dairy farmers in the District of Kent are welcome to participate in a recycling pilot project aimed at reducing the amount of agricultural plastics sent to the landfill or burned on-farm. The next Round-Up events will be held at the municipal gravel pit on Cemetery Road on:

Scholarship, sportsmanship and academic achievement awards were to be presented. Dorothy Quiring, Sharon Davies, Lynn Korstad, Diane Reambeault, and Jean
MacPherson attained university entrance standing and Sharon Striker and Victor Hryhirchuk graduated on the general program. • The Valley Dart League kicked off the season with a tournament at the Elk’s Hall, featuring competitions between men and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Learn about farming at historic fair
Mayor Fisher milks a goat at the 2010 Agassiz Fall Fair.
Enjoy time spent with family & friends at the Agassiz Fall Fair & Corn Festival. Best wishes to the Agassiz Agricultural Association, volunteers & participants for another successful event.
Cotton candy, the carnival and copious amounts of corn on the cob. Those are a few of our favourite things, and they'll all be a part of this year's Agassiz Fall Fair. This will be the 107th Fall Fair and 63rd Corn Festival, reminding us all that there is a long agricultural history in this area. So, in between all the rides, entertainment and delicious food, take some of your weekend to learn a little about the local farming community. For example, the crowning of Corn King is not just about the crown. This is an honour handed out each year, and it's one based on science and thorough judging by a panel of professionals. The past list of Corn Kings is virtually a list of local corn royalty. Then there are the farmers of the future — the kids in 4H. These kids have what it takes, and taking the time to talk to them during the fair could be the highlight of your trip to the fair. In addition to learning something new about farm animals, your support will be helping the kids boost their own scrapbooks, and help them earn awards and even scholarships. But when you're ready to get
back out and enjoy the festivities, here are a few highlights of the Agassiz Fall Fair and Corn Festival. Gates open at 4 p.m. today, along with the agricultural hall and midway. The beer garden opens at 5 p.m. and bingo starts at 6 p.m. Blendurz will perform on the outdoor stage at 6 p.m. New this year is a continental breakfast instead of the pancake breakfast; that runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and is offered for free but donations are appreciated. The parade makes its way through town at 10 a.m., and O' Canada will be sung at 11 a.m. at the fairgrounds. The goat milking contest gets underway at 3 p.m. on the outdoor stage, and will feature dignitaries from the area. Entertainment runs all day on stage, including Darryl Weyman's tribute to Johnny Cash and local singer/songwriter Adam Briscoe. Admission to the fair is $2 on Friday night, $8 on Saturday. Children pay $3 and children under age five get in free. There is free parking, or take advantage of the free shuttle.

Free shuttle offers rides to fairgrounds For the first time ever, a free shuttle is being offered to and from the Agassiz Fall Fair. The shuttle will run between two churches on Morrow Road and the fairgrounds. Parking will be available at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Agassiz Christian Reformed Church. Fair Director Ken Schwaerzle says he hopes people will use the shuttle, as it could help cut down on the traffic in town during the busiest times of the fair, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. It
will also cut down on the number of vehicles trying to find parking along Pioneer Avenue at the train tracks. “Some people, including myself, hate to park along the way when it’s so close,” Schwaerzle says. For others, the walk to the fairgrounds may be too far from home. “But grabbing a shuttle will be easier,” he says, with the added bonus of being dropped off right at the fair’s main entrance. “It will be easier for some people to just
walk out to Morrow Road and get on the shuttle there.” The shuttle was an idea put forward by Sylvia Pranger, emcee for the fair’s entertainment on stage this year. She is also board director at Prospera Credit Union, who is sponsoring the shuttle. “It was a very nice offer put forward by the Credit Union,” Schwaerzle says. Pranger says the idea came up when a member had mentioned she had trouble getting her hus-
band, who can’t walk well, to and from the fair last year. If the shuttle is popular, the committee in charge will consider offering it again in years to come. There is no cost to ride the shuttle, which will be making its rounds between the Morrow Road churches and the fair on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. For more information, call 604796-3246.

Entries of every level can be seen at the Fall Fair, in the Agricultural Hall starting today at 4 p.m. Exhibitors are reminded to pick up their entries at the end of the day Saturday, along with any prize money. Exhibits not picked up will be auctioned off at 7:30 p.m. in the Ag. Hall.
Poultry on parade For the first time in recent memory, a poultry club will be included in the 4H competitions at the Agassiz Fall Fair. There have been chickens and other poultry brought to the fair as pets in the annual exhibition, Fair Director Ken Schwaerzle says, but never a full club. The club is coming from Langley, and is the only one in the Fraser Valley, he says. Agassiz is also home to the largest 4H rabbit show in B.C., and the largest 4H dog show. This year, there are also three horse clubs coming out to compete. All 4H judging takes place on Saturday, starting in the morning. To learn more about 4H, or any of the animals being shown this weekend, ask a competing 4H member. Speaking with the public and offering education to fairgoers is part of their mandate in showing at fairs around B.C. Exhibitors have brought in everything from pickled beets to model cars for the annual exhibition at the fall fair.

Buying A Home
Finding the perfect home doesn't happen in one day. There are a number of things you can do to simplify the process, including deďŹ ning ďŹ nancial parameters, potential neighbourhoods and the desired features in your next home.
to many people because it typically provides more living space and land. On the other hand, a condominium may be a more appropriate choice for you, with an emphasis on maintenance-free living.
Do you need an extra bathroom, a garage, a fenced backyard, or lower utility bills? Do you want a ďŹ replace, a short drive to work, or maybe minimal yard work? Once your list is complete, decide what is most important to your lifestyle.
A REALTORÂŽ can help you analyze all of these buying issues. A REALTORÂŽ working as a buyer's agent works to ďŹ nd the connection between homes available in the market and the needs and ďŹ nancial capacity of buyers. Talk to and compare the services of REALTORSÂŽ to help you navigate through this complicated business transaction. Be comfortable and conďŹ dent with the REALTORÂŽ you are selecting as your business partner.
Then it's location, location, location. Location affects your day-to-day living and is one of the most signiďŹ cant inuences on value. Your choice of location may be limited somewhat by the price you can afford. Even so, make sure you consider such things as distance to work, schools, shopping and entertainment.
