A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Reader, I’m writing to tell you about THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE BOOK OF THE CHICAGO BEARS: A DECADE-BY-DECADE HISTORY (Agate Midway; 978-1-57284-177-2; September 15, 2015; $35), a photo-driven coffee-table volume from the Chicago Tribune that details the storied history of the city’s home team. For nearly a century, the paper’s sports department has been documenting the Bears—from the team’s start as one of the NFL’s original teams to its current status as one of the league’s most popular and highly valued franchises—with devoted reporting, live-action photography, and detailed accounts of each game. The Chicago Tribune Book of the Chicago Bears is a decade-by-decade look at the team, beginning when Bears founder George Halas moved the “Decatur Staleys” to Chicago in 1921. A year later, he changed the name to the Bears. Over the next decade, legendary Bears stars like Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski helped build up the nascent NFL, and the Bears evolved into the storied “Monsters of the Midway,” who dominated the sport with four NFL titles in the 1940s. The Bears went on to seven winning campaigns in the 1950s and a final title with Halas as coach in 1963. Their 1985 Super Bowl championship—the team’s ninth NFL championship and first of the Super Bowl era—ignited the city’s passion into a full-blown love affair that continues into the 21st century. This large-format edition collects full-color photography, vintage black-and-white images, reproduced headlines, original reporting, game-by-game records, Hall of Fame player profiles, and more—all of it carefully curated by the Tribune sports staff to create a comprehensive account of Bears history that any fan will appreciate. As the Tribune’s long-time Hall of Fame football reporter Don Pierson notes in his introduction, “In Chicago, the Bears win every year, whether they win or not. Their grip on the city spans generations and cultures, endures disappointments, and celebrates triumphs great and small.” The Chicago Tribune Book of the Chicago Bears is a collector’s item that showcases this legacy in a handsome, high-end package. I hope you will consider this title for feature or review. The Tribune’s associate managing sports editor Joe Knowles, who wrote the foreword, is also available for interviews about the book.
