NEVER STOP A Memoir

Simba Sana

N

ever Stop is the wrenching personal story of Simba Sana, the cofounder and former leader of Karibu Books, a major indie-bookselling phenomenon and perhaps the most successful black-owned company in the history of the book industry. In this memoir, Sana reveals how his experience with Karibu jumpstarted his lifelong journey to better understanding himself, human nature, faith, and American culture—which ultimately helped him develop the powerful personal philosophy that drives his life today. Born Bernard Sutton in Washington, DC, Sana grew up in the cycle of poverty and violence that dominated inner-city life in the ’70s and ’80s. Sana’s academic success got him into college, where he flourished. Committed to self-improvement and selfdiscipline, he became a successful professional while also becoming an impassioned Black Nationalist and Pan-Africanist. He lived the corporate life at Ernst & Young by day while leading radical consciousness-raising groups by night. Building Karibu became Sana’s opportunity to bind the disparate elements of his life together. Ultimately, though, the paradoxes in his identity and his accumulated emotional wounds confounded his effort to overcome his business reversals, and everything Sana built—his marriage, family, and business—was lost in an incredibly brief period of time. Sana had to rebuild his life—and his identity—and set out to do so in a way that focused principally on the meaning and importance of love.

THERE’S A DRAGON IN MY CLOSET Dorothea Taylor Illustrated by Charly Palmer

T Children’s Picture Book Ages 3 to 8 August 2017 $17.95

10 × 10 isbn : 978-1-57284-227-4

• Themes of friendship, the power of imagination, and diversity • Humorous story that acknowledges and celebrates the importance of childhood mischievousness • Lush, colorful imagery featuring an adorable African American character reminiscent of Peter from The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

here’s a Dragon in My Closet is among the debut offerings from Denene Millner Books, the new children’s line published under Agate’s Bolden imprint in partnership with Denene Millner, the noted parenting authority, editor, and New York Times bestselling author. The book’s dragon in the closet is quite the mischief maker: one minute he’s dancing like a goof under bedsheets and leaving get-well notes and peppermints for little ones who are sick, and the next he’s tracking dirty footprints across the carpet and eating all the snickerdoodles out of the cookie jar. With him around, there’s always lots of fun—and a whole heap of trouble, especially when he goes invisible, leaving a little boy to answer for his bad behavior. Colorful illustrations bring to life this adorable tale of a kid who blames sweet surprises and mischievous behavior on an invisible, mysterious guest only he knows exists: the friendly, goofy, troublemaking dragon in his closet. But is the dragon really the one to blame? There’s a Dragon in My Closet is a funny, engaging tribute to mischievous little boys and imaginary friends. Dorothea Taylor has a degree in graphic design with a minor in journalism. She currently resides in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where she runs an award-winning design studio, T.P. Design, Inc. Charly Palmer, a graduate of the American Academy of Art, is a nationally recognized fine artist whose work is in private and public collections, including those of the McDonald’s Corporation, the Coca-Cola Company, and Vanderbilt University. His art is inspired by his children and grandchildren. He lives in Atlanta.

There’s a dragon in my closet, there’s a dragon, I swear! I run to tell my mom and dad, they don’t believe he’s there.

A book that celebrates the humanity and everyday wonder of a character who rarely finds space in children’s picture books: a black boy

Just last week I lost a tooth, and I don’t have to be a scholar to know it was that old dragon who left me that crisp, new dollar.

She flung open my closet door, looking quite frantic, I recall, when out from all the clutter bounced a lone red rubber ball. “See, I told you, Mom,” I quickly said, “The dragon wants to play catch.” The ball was followed by a shoe, some toys, and my pants with the big, blue patch.

That was a setup, a decoy, for sure, I have learned one great, big lesson, if I have learned no other.

CROWN

An Ode to the Fresh Cut Derrick Barnes Illustrated by Gordon C. James

C

Children’s Picture Book Ages 3 to 8 October 2017 $17.95

8.5 × 11 isbn : 978-1-57284-224-3

• Themes of self-esteem and confidence in looking good • Colorful, realistic imagery featuring various African American male characters • An homage to the rituals of black barbershops • Barnes is the author of multiple children’s books and the father of four sons, whom he writes about on his parenting blog, Raising the Mighty

rown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut is Denene Millner Books’s second offering of the season (see page 15). The barbershop is where the magic happens. Boys go in as lumps of clay and, with princely robes draped around their shoulders, dabs of cool shaving cream on their foreheads, and slow, steady hands shaping their hair, they come out as royalty. That crisp yet subtle line makes boys sharper, more visible, and more aware of every great thing that could happen to them when they look good: lesser grades turn into As, girls start to show interest, and even a mother’s hug gets a little tighter. Everyone notices. A fresh cut makes a boy fly. This rhythmic, read-aloud title is, on the surface, about the ritual of a new haircut: sitting in the spinning chair, leaning back while the barber creates art with his clippers, peeking at that fresh cut in a handheld mirror when it’s all done, and seeing the you that you love the most. Cut deeper and see an unbridled celebration of the self-esteem, confidence, and swagger boys feel when they leave the barber’s chair—a tradition that helps them not only love and accept themselves but also take a giant step toward caring how they present themselves to the world.

Derrick Barnes, a graduate of Jackson State University, is the author of eight books, including the popular series Ruby and the Booker Boys. He also wrote bestselling copy for Hallmark as the first African American male staff writer for the company. Barnes resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife and four sons.

CRAFT COFFEE: A MANUAL Brewing a Better Cup at Home Jessica Easto

T

his comprehensive but accessible handbook is for the average coffee lover who wants to make better coffee at home. Unlike other coffee books, this one focuses exclusively on coffee—not espresso—and explores multiple pour-over, immersion, and cold-brew techniques on 10 different devices.

Trade Cloth November 2017 $19.95

• High-end hardcover gift package with illustrations throughout • Includes profiles and manual brewing instructions for 10 devices, including the Chemex, French press, and V60 • Popularity of manual brewing is expanding into smaller cities, housewares retailers, and specialty supermarkets

Thanks to a small but growing number of dedicated farmers, importers, roasters, and baristas, coffee quality is at an all-time high. But for nonprofessionals, achieving café quality at home can seem out of reach. With dozens of equipment options, conflicting information on how to use that equipment, and an industry language that, at times, doesn’t seem made for the rest of us, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Written by a coffee enthusiast for coffee enthusiasts, Craft Coffee: A Manual is a comprehensive guide to improving your brew at home. The book provides all of the information readers need to discover what they like in a cup of specialty coffee—and to replicate the perfect cup day after day. From the science of extraction and brewing techniques to the challenges of choosing equipment and deciphering coffee bag labels, Craft Coffee focuses on the issues—cost, time, taste, and accessibility—that home coffee brewers negotiate and shows that no matter where you are in your coffee journey, you can make a great cup at home. Jessica Easto received a degree in journalism from the University of Tennessee and an MFA in creative writing from Southern Illinois University. She has been brewing craft coffee at home for more than eight years.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Makes 400 grams (13.5 fluid ounces)

1.

Fill a kettle with the water and set it over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil.

28.5 grams (¼ cup + 2 teaspoons) fresh whole coffee

2.

While the water heats, set a timer for 8 minutes. Grind the coffee very coarsely, transfer it to the brewing chamber of a French press, set it on a kitchen scale, and zero it.

3.

When the water just starts to boil, remove the kettle from the heat. Start the timer and gently add the water to the French press until the scale reads 400 grams.

4.

After 30 to 45 seconds has elapsed on the timer, gently stir the coffee-water mixture with a spoon until most of the grounds sink to the bottom. Place the plunger over the vessel, but do not depress it.

5.

When the timer sounds, slowly and gently depress the plunger. It’s important to do this carefully. Forcefully depressing the plunger will result in an unwanted amount of agitation, and you’ll risk ruining your balanced cup by unleashing the bitter, astringent flavors that are still in the bean.

6.

Serve immediately or transfer to a separate carafe.

The 8-Minute French Press Method Most coffee guides will tell you that to make French press coffee, you should pour water over the grounds and let them sit for 4 to 5 minutes. I used to make it that way, too. However, thanks to barista Nick Cho of Wrecking Ball in San Francisco, I’ve found that extremely coarse grounds and longer steep times (up to 8 minutes) produce a more even, delicate cup. Because of this, Andreas and I have included specs for both the 8-minute method and the 5-minute method here—shorter brew times do have an early morning appeal, after all. The 8-minute method works best with a very coarse grind. Start with the coarsest setting on your grinder that still produces an even grind (the coarsest setting on our Virtuoso chews up the beans). TIP: Most of the methods in this section call for a stopwatch. For this method (and the 5-Minute French Press Method), it’s easier to set a timer and wait for it to sound.

Adding ricotta to pancake batter gives you a super fluffy pancake with an almost creamy texture. Throw in some fresh lemon zest and blueberries and you have a rich, delicious breakfast treat. I always make a big batch of pancakes and refrigerate or freeze the leftover cooked ones. That way, I can have great pancakes in a flash, any time I want. c MAKE S 4 SE RV I N GS 2 cups all-purpose flour

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon baking powder

11/2 cups buttermilk

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Zest of 1 large lemon

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

2 tablespoons acacia honey

31/2 cups fresh blueberries, divided

11/2 cups whole milk ricotta

1/4–1/2 cup blueberry honey

Place a griddle over medium heat (it will take about 5 to 7 minutes to reach the right temperature). Preheat the oven to 150°F or 200°F. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, ricotta, eggs, buttermilk, lemon zest, and vanilla. Pour the ricotta mixture into the bowl with the flour ingredients. Mix well with a large spoon until the ingredients are just incorporated. Set aside. Once the griddle is hot and just beginning to smoke, grease it with nonstick cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cup of the batter onto the griddle for each pancake. Place about 12 of the blueberries on each pancake. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until you see bubbles on the top and the bottom is lightly browned. Gently flip the pancakes (you don’t want to smash the blueberries) and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, or until they are cooked through and lightly spring back to the touch. Repeat this process until you have used all of the batter. Reserve the extra blueberries (you should have about 1 cup left) for the garnish. To keep the freshly made pancakes warm, place them on a platter in the oven as you continue to make the rest. To serve, place two or three pancakes on each of four plates. Top each serving with 1 to 2 tablespoons of the blueberry honey and garnish with 1/4 cup of the remaining blueberries. Serve immediately. Store leftover pancakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

ritten by health and wellness expert Dr. Frank Ardito, this book explores the intersection of cooking, eating, health, and wellness by offering 130 recipes designed to help you improve every aspect of your life. Unlike most diet and health cookbooks, The Self-Care Cookbook acknowledges that eating well means sometimes eating “bad.” Ardito doesn’t believe in bad food, restrictions, or denial. True wellness—complete wellness—addresses both ends of the spectrum: fresh, light dishes that strengthen our bodies and wonderful indulgences that feed our souls.

The first of its kind, The Self-Care Cookbook is divided into 10 chapters, each of which focuses on one dimension of personal wellness: physical, spiritual, emotional, environmental, intellectual, nutritional, protectoral, social, occupational, and financial. Each chapter includes 13 recipes—from starters to mains to desserts—that support well-being through carefully selected ingredients and cooking methods. This book encourages you to prepare these recipes by yourself, for yourself, as a way to create a true sense of wholeness and satisfaction. A balanced life includes both celebratory and health-supportive foods, and this book helps you decide which you most want or need at any given moment. Dr. Frank Ardito has been a professor of health and wellness sciences for more than 20 years. He currently serves as professor and department chair of health and wellness promotion at College of Lake County in suburban Chicago. As a wellness trainer, Ardito has worked with hundreds of organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Cancer Society, and has coached or consulted with several Olympic athletes and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Emblematic of the team’s focus, defenseman Duncan Keith took a stick to the mouth in the decisive game of the conference championship series against San Jose, sacrificing seven teeth. “It’s only teeth,” Keith said. “It’s a long way from the heart.” The end of the franchise’s 49-year run without a Stanley Cup would be shrouded in momentary confusion in Philadelphia, where few but Kane immediately realized he had scored the Game 6 overtime tie-breaker to take the championship. Video confirmation was required, and even then the puck seemed to vanish in the goal’s netting. If winning were to become a tradition for the Blackhawks of this era, so too would general manager Stan Bowman being forced to turn over the post-championship roster around Toews and Kane to maneuver around league salary cap restrictions. Among the missing in 2010-11 were Kris Versteeg, Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd and goalie Antti Niemi. The Blackhawks were knocked from the first round of the playoffs the next two seasons. But in a season shortened by a labor standoff, the 2013 Blackhawks led the league with a 367-5 record and eliminated defending champion Los Angeles with a double-overtime Game 5 goal by Kane for a hat trick, the conference championship and another shot at the Stanley Cup. The title series with Boston seemed destined to return to the United Center for Game 7, but Bryan Bickell tied Game 6 with 1:16 remaining and Dave Bolland nailed the game-winner 17 seconds later for the Cup. Los Angeles avenged its elimination, advancing to the 2014 Stanley Cup Final with a Game 7 conference championship victory over Chicago. The 2014-15 Blackhawks dropped their last three regular-season games, raising concerns about their postseason prospects. Quenneville’s team nevertheless rallied to face Tampa Bay for the title. The Blackhawks downed the Lightning in six games to win the Stanley Cup for a third time in six seasons and sixth in franchise history. They’ve been seeking the elusive alchemy needed for yet another title run ever since.

The reason cellphone use and driving don’t mix is that the human brain doesn’t truly multitask. According to University of Michigan professor David Meyer, the brain has one channel for each type of information—auditory, visual, manual, etc.—which is why you can’t read a text and a road sign at the same time. But some conflicts aren’t so obvious. If the driver has a conversation with somebody describing in detail what his new office looks like, the information could occupy not only the driver’s auditory channel but also the visual channel and could impair his driving.

For decades, basketball fans have tried to distract visiting players at the free-throw line by screaming and waving their arms. Also popular are spinning signs and bare-chested, overweight male fans. But such techniques seem to have little effect. Now comes Arizona State’s Curtain of Distraction, which is hung on PVC pipes and opened just before the free throw, revealing fans performing surreal scenes. Among them: men doing calisthenics in their underwear, unicorns kissing, Santa Claus bearhugging an elf and a man riding an inflatable duck. According to statistics from February, visitors to ASU have made just 61 percent of free throws since the curtain’s debut last season, compared with about 70 percent in the three seasons before.

Vail Reese, a San Francisco dermatologist and film buff, mimics the Oscars by awarding the Skinnies. He honored the 2003 film “Mystic River” by citing “the dark spot on Sean Penn’s neck” as most distracting lesion.

6

10 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE HUMAN CONDITION

6

Advances in technology threaten to overwhelm young minds to the point of distraction. Students’ memories will atrophy because so much information is so readily and instantly available. Students will know a great many things but “have learned nothing.” A diatribe against the Internet? No, Socrates worried about the development of writing and the Greek alphabet about 2,500 years ago.

7 8

When someone uses chitchat, noises or mannerisms to distract or mislead an opponent during poker or another game, it’s called “coffeehousing.”

On Dec. 29, 1972, Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 crashed into a swamp near Miami, killing 101 people. Investigators said the three crew members and a jumpseat occupant were so distracted by a malfunctioning warning light that they didn’t notice the autopilot was disengaged until it was too late.

9

When you make an effort to ignore one thing and focus on another, you are flexing your “executive function,” which is something the brain must learn. A child’s ability to do this explodes around age 4, and it appears to peak at about 30. Scientists aren’t sure why some have a stronger function than others, but research suggests aerobic exercise, of all things, can help strengthen and sustain it.

10

The most mind-blowing fact about distractions that almost no one could possibly imagine is ... oh, look, it’s a cat video!

Roast Leg of Lamb in Garlic–Mint Marinade with Pea Shoot Salad My mother, Helen, roasted a leg of lamb some Sundays for supper following church. She always put so much care and attention into her cooking that she didn’t even realize how detailed her effort was. For example, she would squeeze a lemon over the lamb and then make small incisions in the meat and insert slivers of garlic. Under the leg of lamb, she would place small new potatoes, onions, and more garlic for added flavor. Finally, she made a great pan jus with the delicious lamb drippings. Our family is Armenian, so lamb is a major part of our culture, heritage, and life! —Carrie Nahabedian, chef/owner, Naha and Brindille; Green City Market board member

There’s nothing like that sense of excitement and anticipation we feel at the first open-air Green City Market in May. Watching the wave of green from the first harvest of the year, it’s clear our farmers’ hard work has paid off. Springtime in the Midwest marks a time of growth and possibility. Some say only wine has terroir—that unique combination of geology, geography, and climate that influences taste like nothing else. Yet we know that vegetables and fruits can have the same, as we gorge on woodsy asparagus, glowing red radishes, delicate lettuce, sweet strawberries, rhubarb, peas, and more—the short-lived treasures we look forward to each year.

For successful business leaders, if their goal is to be rich, they can become very rich.

But then what’s the point of having all that money? When you have 100 million U.S. dollars, and your children. Once your net worth exceeds a certain point, that’s not your money anymore. It is society’s money. It is the money society has given to you, and you should take responsibility to allocate the money in a good way. I started thinking about this issue just two, three years ago. One day I suddenly woke up and wondered, “What’s next?”

What we do is not beyond anybody else’s competence. I feel the same way about managing that I do about investing: It’s just not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results.

WARREN BUFFETT

Long ago, Sir Isaac Newton gave us three laws of motion, which were the work of genius. But Sir Isaac’s talents didn’t extend to investing: He lost a bundle in the South Sea Bubble, explaining later, “I can calculate the movement of the stars, but not the madness of men.” If he had not been traumatized by this loss, Sir Isaac might well have gone on to discover the Fourth Law of Motion: For investors as a whole, returns decrease as motion increases.

But the worst mistake is to not make a decision.

For the core things that we wanna do, when we have the decision to either do it the same way that someone else has done it or do it a different way, we’re gonna choose to do it in a different way. And we really encourage people all throughout the company to think about things in that way and make bolder decisions.
