The Brain Science of Hearing: CONNECTING NEW PATHWAYS TO SPOKEN LANGUAGE
WELC ME Welcome to the 2015 AG Bell Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Symposium. This year’s theme is “The Brain Science of Hearing: Connecting New Pathways to Spoken Language.” I would like to thank the symposium advisory committee for developing a rich program that will incorporate the latest scientific research related to brain development and neuroscience. Our understanding of the science behind spoken language development has changed dramatically in the last decade. As a result of universal newborn hearing screening, advancements in hearing technologies and access to inclusive education, children with hearing loss and their families have unprecedented opportunities to achieve any and all language, communication and educational goals they set. Learn how the advances in brain development and neuroscience are changing our intervention for children and how you can tailor your therapy to reflect the current research. Our intent is always to prepare a symposium lineup designed to meet the continuing education needs of professionals working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing and use listening and spoken language. The LSL Symposium is the premier event for cutting-edge best practices on the latest trends to support children who are deaf and hard of hearing and their families with topics presented by listening and spoken language experts from every corner of the field and around the globe. We are pleased to have two outstanding general session presenters. Acclaimed author Lydia Denworth will take you on an exploration into the brain science of hearing. Weaving together her personal story, the history and science in her book I Can Hear You Whisper: An Intimate Journey through the Science of Sound and Language, and the latest research on early language acquisition, Denworth will discuss why anyone who wants to help a child with hearing loss maximize his or her potential must understand what goes on behind the scenes in the brain. Ken Pugh, president and director of research at Haskins Laboratories, a Yale University and University of Connecticut affiliated interdisciplinary institute dedicated to the investigation of the biological bases of language, will present on the relationship between phonological and auditory processing and brain organization in beginning readers. You will learn about the brain pathways used in reading and how this can be applied to your work with children who are deaf and hard of hearing. I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the symposium’s sponsors and exhibitors for their support, and I encourage you to visit the exhibit area to learn about the latest programs, technology and educational tools instrumental to families and children with hearing loss. I hope you and your colleagues will also have time to take in some of what Baltimore has to offer. The symposium venue is neatly nestled along the scenic water’s edge of the Inner Harbor, welcoming guests with breathtaking harbor and downtown views. Whether exploring the area on foot or via water taxi, nearby attractions include the National Aquarium, Baltimore Zoo, Maryland Science Center, Orioles Park at Camden Yards and the many cultural, shopping and entertainment options of the Harbor East neighborhood. Thank you for coming to the 2015 AG Bell LSL Symposium in Baltimore.

Millridge Center for Hearing Impaired Mayfield City Schools 950 Millridge Road, Highland Heights, OH 44143 440-995-7300 Visit our website at www.mayfieldschools.org/MCHI.aspx We serve students from birth through high school in the area surrounding Cleveland, Ohio. Our consortium program consists of over 30 school districts in a 5-county area. It is our belief that every hearing-impaired child should have the opportunity to acquire the necessary communication skills to succeed in a hearing world. The focus of the entire Mayfield Auditory-Oral Program is on the development of auditory-oral communication through highly specialized instruction in speech, language, and listening skills. With appropriate amplification or cochlear implants, children are taught to use residual hearing to develop natural language and speech. Each child is presented with opportunities to learn the Common Core curriculum in his or her least restrictive environment through daily routines and developmentally appropriate speech and language activities.

Continuing Education Grid This Continuing Education (CEU) grid is for your own personal use to track and submit your CEUs at the close of the symposium. All sessions have been approved for CEUs by the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and American Academy of Audiology (AAA), unless otherwise indicated. A space is provided for you to write in the number of CEUs earned for each organization for the sessions you attended; only one event should be completed for each time block. Attendees requesting a Certificate of Attendance should follow the model for LSLS CEUs to track their instructional hours. To receive CEUs for ASHA, additional paperwork is required and is available at the CEU desk. For AG Bell to submit your CEUs to any of the organizations that have pre-approved the symposium sessions, you must submit this completed, signed worksheet to the CEU desk prior to departure. Unless otherwise noted, sessions are approved for CEUs as follows: •
Pre-Symposium Workshops have been approved for 3 CEUs by the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, .03 CEUs by ASHA, and/or .03 CEUs by AAA, as indicated.
•
Concurrent Sessions have been approved for 1.5 CEUs by the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, .015 CEUs by ASHA, and/or .015 CEUs by AAA, as indicated.

I Found My VoIce at dePaul! DePaul School for Hearing & Speech, located in Pittsburgh, PA, is the only Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) school in the western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia tri-state area. At DePaul School, we teach children who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen and speak without using sign language. DePaul students benefit from access to sound provided by digital hearing aids or cochlear implants. DePaul School serves children from birth to age 15, including children who are late-diagnosed and children transferring from sign language or totalcommunication programs.
