FROM THE PUBLISHER

PORK PROMOTERS OF THE YEAR We have produced The Farming Families Magazine for approximately 2 1/2 years. It’s crazy to think that every month for 30 months, we have featured at least four different families— that’s 120 families and individuals! Our stories feature you—the hard working, inspiring, genuine and influential families and individuals in rural southeastern South Dakota. You are the true advocates for agriculture—the leading industry in our state’s economy. Your stories sparked our passion to promote the facts about agriculture which is what inspired our idea for PorkPalooza almost three years ago. We wanted to fill the need to provide an opportunity for consumers to visit with local pork producers. Who doesn’t love great BBQ, leading local musicians and local craft beer? 12,000 guests attended our very first 2-day event! Stay tuned for announcements about our 3rd annual PorkPalooza event. The South Dakota Pork Producer Council and pork producers shared our vision as well as local pit masters, musicians and local craft beer brewers. The event would not have come to fruition if not for the relationships we had built with the farming community and South Dakota Pork Producers Council.

Garrett and Mindy Gross were recognized as the Pork Promoter of the Year at the Jan. 15th South Dakota Pork Producer Council’s MPPA event.

While we are extremely grateful to be awarded as the Pork Promoters of the Year, we need to recognize that we are simply sharing the stories of the pork producers and industry advocates in our state.

MINNEHAHA COUNTY FAMILY

THE JENSENS

Ron Jensen of rural Garretson, S.D. founded Jensen Electric, located in Renner, in 1999. Jensen Electric provides residential, commercial and agricultural electric services. His wife, Natasha, is the Vice President and manages the HR and accounting for the company. Ron, who attended Minnesota West and SDSU, says they are fortunate to have an excellent crew. “Several of our employees have been with us for more than ten years.” L to R: Evan, Eric, Ron, Natasha, Megan and Molly 6

In addition to their committed team of employees, the Jensens’ children, Molly (19), Megan (17), Eric (14) and Evan (11) help with cleaning, filing and yardwork when they can. “There are no challenges in working with family,” jokes Ron. “Everything always goes great; there is never a cross word.” Not only do the Jensens work together at the family’s electric company but also on their farm. “We enjoy working together and with my father, who helps bail hay each summer” says Ron. “We do mostly small square bales for neighbors and friends that don’t have the equipment or the help to manage their pastures themselves. Some keep the hay to feed their own livestock and some we sell to help feed the local horse population. It is fun to have the kids bring friends out to experience bailing hay. It is truly rewarding getting to work together as a family.”

L to R: Natasha, Molly, Ron, Evan, Eric and Megan

Ron worked for a farm family growing up in Beaver Creek, Minn. When he and Natasha, a SDSU graduate, moved to Garretson, they purchased land from relatives of that family 15 years ago. “It was a soybean field when we purchased it,” explains Ron. “We built a home, shop, planted many trees and now farm the tillable acres. We strive to be good stewards of what we have been blessed with. Not sure if we are lucky or the previous owners had a bad farrier, but we seem to find a lot of horseshoes while working the land.” Natasha, a Milbank, S.D. native, and Ron agree that living in the country is peaceful and relaxing. However, Ron adds that they never run out of things to do. “We also couldn’t ask for better neighbors in our area. I seem to find a way to get a tractor stuck almost every year and have been pulled out by several of my closest neighbors more than once.” Although the family enjoys working together, they also value time vacationing. They have traveled to Yellowstone National Park, Black Hills, Medora, Minn., Minnesota North Shore, Florida, Arizona and also spend time at Big Stone Lake with Natasha’s parents. The Jensens are actively involved in the community. Ron has served on many board positions at their church. Natasha teaches preschool part-time in Brandon and has been superintendent of Sunday School, Choir director and financial secretary at their church. Their children are busy with their education and activities as well. Oldest daughter Molly is excelling in her second year in the Architecture

program at SDSU and is involved in Resident Hall Government. Megan is in Art Club and on the Journalism (yearbook committee) and enjoys photography. Eric is involved in FFA, and Evan is in the STEM program. Agriculture is definitely a key part of the Jensens’ daily lives—not only in running their farm but also through their business. The Jensen Electric team knows the electrical services required to power a farm operation. They can help supply energy to any building or storage facility. Whether installing a grain dryer or building a new shop, they specialize in finding ways to incorporate the newest technologies to help make work easier, safer and more efficient. “There isn’t much you can’t monitor or operate inexpensively from a smart phone anymore,” says Ron.

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW

Andy Spaans

ANDY SPAANS:

MAINTAINING THE LEGACY OF OLD IRON “Legacy Farm” is a term many people understand and connect with. Around South Dakota, you will find hundreds of family farms that meet the description of a legacy farm: farmland passed down from generation to generation. Some families also have collected antiques and memorabilia that represent memories of growing up on a farm years ago—otherwise known as old iron. Former Stickney, S.D. area farmer, Andy Spaans, left a legacy of old iron following his passing in January. The tractors and implements he collected and restored symbolize a lifetime of friendships and relationships with 10

the many people he interacted with—locally and across neighboring states— over the years. For 45 years, Andy and his wife, Doris, farmed near Stickney raising Black Angus cattle most of those years as well as corn, soybeans and wheat. They moved off the farm to Mitchell in 2008 and shortly thereafter, in 2010, they built a shop south of Mitchell to house his collection. “Andy was always someone who had to be doing something, and he always enjoyed old machinery and tractors,” explains Doris. After he retired, his collection really started to develop.

The Farming Families Magazine | www.agemedia.pub | February 2020

Doris agrees that Andy’s collection represents a lifetime of experiences and relationships. “When Andy first started collecting tractors, his nephews, LaRon and Tyler Gerlach, would help with the restorations. Then over time, he took on help from friends like Dimock resident, Dan Kurtenbach, and Frank Baker of Mitchell to work on the tractors as well.” Andy and Doris did not have children of their own, so Andy valued time spent with his nephews and others who enjoyed preserving history and working on his machinery. The hobby that Andy enjoyed was also shared by Doris. “What I really enjoyed was seeing the

satisfaction on his face when he’d turn a rusty old tractor into something that looked brand new again. I also cherished spending time with him as we’d drive to look at or pick up a tractor to be restored. We always enjoyed traveling together and the scenery along the way. We traveled to parts of Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and of course South Dakota,” recalls Doris. Andy started collecting back in 1995 when he saw a John Deere M on a truck from Canada fueling up at a local CoOp. He started talking to the owner, and they discussed Andy purchasing that tractor and shortly thereafter, it was delivered to his farm. One of Andy’s other first projects was a John Deere Crawler he acquired from a friend. Both tractors got Andy started in restorations with his nephews and the rest is history as they say. The collection has grown over the years with mostly John Deere tractors and implements, but there are other manufacturers included as well. The collection also includes toy tractors along with pedal cars and advertising memorabilia. Several implements are from the area that broke sod during the homesteading days and he had recently purchased online a John Deere plow that dates to the 1850s; even the John Deere museums in Illinois don’t have many items from that era. Before Andy’s passing, he had plans in place to sell several tractors at auction this month. Close friends Dan and Frank have kept busy prepping that equipment for the online auction that ran the first few weeks of February. Even after the auction, Andy’s collection will still be very impressive. “My plans are to keep most of the collection together and have the shop open for now to allow others to enjoy the tractors,” explains Doris.

There are no shortage of friends and people who knew that Andy did great restorations and developed a great assortment of items. The circles of people who appreciate old iron are often familiar with each other from several local organizations such as the Twin Rivers Old Iron Assoc. in Delmont and events like the annual Humboldt Threshing Show and the Granite Threshing Bee in the region. Through the work of organizations like the Twin Rivers Old Iron Assoc. and guys like Andy and their investments—not only monetarily but also their time and commitment—to maintain this equipment and memorabilia, we are able to maintain the tradition and history of agriculture.

YOUTH IN AG

SARAH KROEGER South Dakota State University sophomore Sarah Kroeger, a Lennox, S.D. native, is pursuing an agriculture education degree and hopes to also assume a role as FFA Advisor. Growing up on a farm played a key role in giving Sarah hands-on experience caring for animals. Her parents, Kim and Paula Kroeger, continue to farm. Sarah’s older siblings, Molly and Jared, pursued ag-related careers as well. “My brother is now working as a custom harvester, and my sister is graduating this year from SDSU with a degree in microbiology,” adds Sarah. In addition to growing up on her family’s beef, swine and grain farm just north of Lennox, her involvement in 4-H provided experience raising and showing animals including rabbits, pigs, goats and sheep. She joined 4-H when she was 8 years old. “I also enjoyed creating many static exhibits for the fair such as paintings, drawings, jewelry, baked goods and wood projects,” she says. She attended 4-H camps and the Citizen Washington Focus 4-H trip. Sarah joined FFA as a freshman in high school. “I watched my two older siblings become highly involved in the organization and could not wait to join! From there, I have been involved in so many different competitions and activities such as leadership camp, livestock judging, ag mechanics, parliamentary procedure, creed speaking, ag marketing, ag communications and showing livestock.” In addition to FFA activities, Sarah says her Advisor sparked a passion for agriculture. “My FFA advisor was this awesome mustache man named Mr. (Jim) Wilson,” she jokes. “He fueled 16

all of the goals I had throughout my FFA career. The biggest one he helped me with was showing sheep. He provided me with practically everything I needed to be successful, and I am extremely grateful for all his help. A big lesson I learned from him is you only get out what you put in.” As a FFA member, Sarah served in several leadership roles. On the chapter level, she filled the positions of treasurer and president. Through those roles, she helped organize events and fundraisers including the community pancake feed

fundraiser, AGventure Day and Kiss the Pig. On the district level, she was the secretary. This position required her to help out at the Ag adventure center at the State Fair and also help arrange the district dance. Finally, she was the 2018-2019 FFA State Vice President. While serving as the FFA State VP, she had a variety of duties including writing workshops, putting on leadership camps, attending numerous leadership trainings, putting on FFA shows at State Fair, attending national convention, completing chapter visits, managing district officer training and of course— practicing and hosting state convention.

Sarah say, “Even though I grew up showing cattle, I fell in love with showing sheep during my last few years in 4-H and FFA.”

Sarah says she has greatly enjoyed the many trips FFA has taken her on. “Throughout my time, I have traveled the country to places such as Indianapolis, Ind., Oklahoma City, Ok., Washington, D.C., Casper, Wyo. and Louisville, Ky. Plus, I spent the first two weeks of the year in Spain and Portugal with the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers put on by National FFA. These are opportunities that I won’t get anywhere else. From that, I have learned to be present in the moment, enjoy where you are, and always try to have a positive attitude.” “Anyone can learn something through FFA, regardless of their background, interest or future plans,” shares Sarah. “Students can learn skills in an agricultural setting that transfer to anywhere in life—ag related or not. One of the biggest skills I gained was public speaking which has helped me gain confidence. I know I have used this public speaking skill beyond ag class. I’ve used public speaking in other classes and job interviews. FFA is really for anyone who has a willingness to work hard and learn.” Sarah encourages any student to consider joining FFA. “FFA is a great program where you can pick what you want to do and put in however much time you want. Plus, you can always choose something new; you don’t have to stick to one thing. There are also countless opportunities to travel—whether that’s just across the state for camp or to Washington, D.C. for the Washington Leadership Conference. FFA can really take you everywhere if you let it. Plus, you can meet so many new people from around that state. You never know who might become your new friend.”

KEEPING LOCAL HISTORY ALIVE

HISTORY OF THE ZIP FEED On December 3, 2005, a Sioux Falls event went viral. Late-night talk shows joked about it, national news programs referenced it, and people as far away as Australia heard about it. This was the day the demolition of the ZIP Feed Tower was to take place. However, things didn't go as planned, and the tower proved to be stronger than the demolition charges that were set to bring it down. This somewhat comical event is a shared memory for many that lived in the area at the time. Many farm families share memories of ZIP Feed that go far beyond this last chapter. Even today, over 25 years since ZIP ceased operations, it's common to see people wearing jackets or stocking hats emblazoned with the classic ZIP Feed logo. You can also find mugs, signs and other memorabilia at almost any antique shop. At its core, ZIP Feed was a family company that served family farms. The company was founded by Paul Batcheller in 1937 as Batcheller's Feed. The business grew organically and through an acquisition of another local mill. Paul came up with a brand name for their feed, but a local farmer said, "…I want that feed that gives the pigs that little zip". So, in the early 1950s, the name "ZIP Feed" became the official name. In 1955, construction started on the mill tower with its opening in 1957 making the 202 ft. tower the tallest building in South

20

Dakota until its demolition. Paul Bascheller's son, Tom, states, "When that mill tower opened, it was the most modern feed mill in the world." The new facility was capable of producing 75,000 tons of feed per year—three times that of previous methods used. After the opening of the mill tower and into the 1960s, the company continued to grow around the state as they also opened a mill in Huron in the early 1970s. The reason for their growth was because of these

facilities, but most importantly, the family of employees and dealers around the state were the key factor. Tom shares, "We had great dealers in the area representing us. The families who sold our products in Parker, Centerville, Colton, Dell Rapids, Colman, Emery, and other places did a great job and became good friends of ours." Garretson area resident Reid Christopherson, who worked for ZIP, says, "The ZIP model was built upon an extremely strong

ZIP corporate office

foundation of dealers. ZIP was not a product—it was an experience. It was a family." The ZIP Feed slogan was "A Brand You Can Trust", and company operations were based on that from the top down to the end customer— the farmers themselves. Tom Batcheller sold ZIP in 1996 which marked almost a 60-year run of the company being owned by his family in Sioux Falls. Over those years, the landscape of the family farm changed along with the way feed was supplied to these producers. As the poultry and swine operations got bigger and bigger, so did the companies that provided that feed.

SERVING SOUTH DAKOTA FROM SOUTH DAKOTA SINCE 1916

The long-term legacy of ZIP Feed runs much deeper than a viral video clip. The families that purchased their products to put food on their tables remember the role that ZIP Feed played in that process, and they remember the relationship they had with their local dealer as well. The memorabilia and promotional materials from those days are a symbol of those relationships and the family atmosphere built by everyone involved in the business.

SPONSOR

SIOUX FALLS MONUMENT Husband-wife team Mark and Jenn Ernste of Sioux Falls, S.D. began running Sioux Falls Monument in 2012. Sioux Falls Monument, which is part of the regional company Sunburst Memorials in St. Cloud, Minn., has been at its current location at 4901 W 12th Street in Sioux Falls—on the south side of the street— since 1947. Harold Wilson, a WWII Air Force Veteran, founded Sioux Falls Monument in 1947 after returning home from the war. He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, his wife, June is still living. Mark, who has a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, brings many years of experience working in the stone business. In fact, he used to sell the quartzite to Sioux Falls Monument and our competition. When the couple started managing the Sioux Falls business, they wanted to brand themselves in a personable way and reference themselves as the “Monument People”. Jenn says, “We used pictures and ran radio ads in our advertising so people could feel as though they knew us by our faces and voices.” Mark and Jenn know choosing a monument is not an easy decision to make. They work with each family in their search to find the right fit to honor their loved one’s life. “We focus our mission as ‘Celebrating Lives’, because the monument created is really left for those behind. So in essence, they are celebrating the life of the loved one they lost. This is done in so many ways, but one is in the choice of the monument—that person’s testimonial,” explains Jenn. “The monument establishes the place as sacred and reveals the person remembered.”

24

Mark and Jenn Ernste

Sioux Falls Monument’s primary service area is within a 100-mile radius of Sioux Falls, but they can set anywhere in the country. They recently designed a family memorial that went to South Carolina and two others that went to Illinois. The couple are not pushy salespeople; they want to truly be there for families to help make a very difficult time less difficult. “We recognize that people grieve in their own way and in their own time,” shares Jenn. Jenn recalls two of her favorite monuments. “The monument done for my father-in-law was done in the beautiful quartzite out of Jasper, Minn. Another one is a bench and sculpted angel where the face is actually replicated to be that of the young deceased woman that lost her life in a tragic car accident.” She adds that their team is extremely

The Farming Families Magazine | www.agemedia.pub | February 2020

talented and creative. “We have done semis and motorcycles. There is really nothing we cannot do.” When the couple assumed management of the Sioux Falls location, they had a vision for a charitable donations plan that would benefit the cemeteries, churches or organizations the deceased person was passionate about. Through their unique charitable donations program, when a sexton of a cemetery refers a member of the church congregation to them, they will cut a check back to the church to help with ongoing maintenance operations. It just feels right to us, to give to the ongoing care of the monument and cemetery,” shares Jenn. “So, one day, when I was reading the obituaries, I saw many wishes of the deceased were to donate to certain organizations. I thought— if we could return a portion the cost

Q&A WITH THE AREA EXPERT

DAN SEVERSON, BENCO PRODUCTS INC.

WHAT SPECIFICALLY DOES BENCO DO FOR FARMERS IN THE AREA? We are authorized dealers of Banjo, Precision Planting, Totally Tubular and Raven. We also sell Teejet, Ace Pumps, Hypro Pumps, Shurflo Pumps, Ace Tanks, Norwesco Tanks, Wilger parts, and many other parts. We also have a service department the goes out into the field and installs and repairs on products we sell. HOW DID BENCO START? Benco started by making cables on the coffee table of our owner, Jason Benning. The company grew from humble beginnings to where we are today servicing customers around 3-4 hour radius of Tea. AS THE OPERATIONS MANAGER AT BENCO PRODUCTS IN TEA, WHAT ARE YOUR DAY TO DAY DUTIES?

Dan Severson, Operations Manager at Benco Products

With Benco being a small company, my duties are not limited. The saying “other duties as assigned” is true for me. One day I am purchasing agent, next day I am sales rep. Other days, I could be engineering a project. This is what makes this job entertaining and challenging all at the same time.

OVER THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS, WHERE DO YOU SEE TECHNOLOGY GOING AND WHERE WILL BENCO FIT?

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR ROLE? Helping people! When a person says thank you and shakes your hand, it make all the hard work we have done worth it! CAN YOU EXPLAIN A SITUATION WHERE A CUSTOMER FACED A CHALLENGE AND BENCO WAS ABLE TO HELP THIS OPERATOR? I received a frantic call from a grower who was spraying with a pull type sprayer. The sprayer came unhooked and broke wire harness going to sprayer. I went out and replaced the wire harness connector. In that connector there were 16 different colored wires. I was able to re-pin this connector without a wire schematic. The grower said to me, “Wow, you are as good as people say!” Less than 1 hour, he was back up and spraying!

Technology seems to change every day! We at Benco are keeping up with the technology by developing new products, continuing our education with our partners in the industry. This way we can help farmers in the future understand what the potentials are for this new technology. Education on this is non-stop, we have a saying here at Benco, “TRY TO LEARN 3 NEW THINGS EVERYDAY!” This helps keep us on our toes.

FROM THE KITCHEN

CUBAN PORK TENDERLOIN

Provided by Charlotte Rommereim, RDN, LN, LD (Alcestor, SD resident)

INGREDIENTS: • 1 1/2 pounds pork tenderloin (trimmed) • 1/4 cup orange juice (fresh) • 1/4 cup grapefruit juice (fresh) • 2 tablespoons cilantro (chopped) • 1 teaspoon cumin • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 2 cloves garlic (finely chopped) • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes Photo source:

g.com normalcookin

DIRECTIONS: 1. Using thin knife, trim silver skin from tenderloin. Mix orange juice, grapefruit juice, cilantro, cumin, oregano, garlic, salt, and hot pepper in gallon-sized zip-top plastic bag. Add pork, close, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 4 hours. Meanwhile, make Rice and Black Bean Salad. 2. Prepare outdoor grill for direct medium-hot grilling. For a gas grill, preheat grill on high. Adjust temperature to 400°F. For a charcoal grill, build fire and let burn until coals are covered with white ash. Spread coals and let burn for 15-20 minutes. 3. Lightly oil cooking grate. Remove pork from marinade, drain briefly, but do not scrape off solids. Place on grill and cover grill. Cook, turning occasionally, until browned and instant-read thermometer inserted in center of pork reads 145 degrees Fahrenheit, about 20-27 minutes. Transfer to carving board and let stand 3-5 minutes. Cut on slight diagonal and serve with rice and black bean salad. Serves 6

OUR PHILOSOPHY There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn. Every year, he won the award for the best grown corn. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, crosspollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.” So is with our lives... Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all. ~ Author Unknown ~

Call it power of collectivity. Call it a principle of success. Call it a law of life. The fact is, none of us truly wins, until we all win!

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. ~ Proverbs 11:24-25 ~
