ENJOY LIFE IN A GREAT TOWN GROWTH REQUIRES STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS
The City of Harrisburg is investing a lot in the community, so you enjoy where you live.
Rapid growth requires lots of strategic investments. First there are Harrisburg’s highways and roads and balancing the infrastructure projects. Seven major road projects are all taking place at the same time.
The city places lots of emphasis on a well-rounded quality of life for its residents and especially working families with school-age kids. There is a huge focus on our city parks, the trail system and the community library. The city is also geared for lots of spring and summer community programming.
A solid economic base has led to steady growth. With 13 new developments there are lots of new homes and schools under construction. Coming this fall, a third middle school and
a freshman academy. And construction will soon be underway for Harrisburg’s eight elementary school.
Public safety is an essential. To enjoy the parks and all the city has to offer means providing a safe place live and raise a family.
Yet, Harrisburg isn’t immune to the inflationary nature of the economy. The cost of doing business has gone up considerably. Every project costs more.
This is one great town! It goes without saying, nothing can match Harrisburg’s strong sense of community and family friendliness. Our town is thriving, and we continue to push forward. Our goal – to ensure everyone can enjoy life in the state’s fastest growing community. See you at Harrisburg Days! //

GO THE DISTANCE TO EASE THEIR PAIN
Summer is upon us and as our thoughts turn to warmer days and carefree ways, I can’t help but think of a favorite summer activity of many in the Harrisburg community – baseball! Just recently, I was flipping through the TV guide and came upon one of the most nostalgic and frequently quoted movies of all time, Field of Dreams. This 1989 sports fantasy flick turned into a cultural phenomenon which gave us memorable lines as, “If you build it, they will come,” “Ease his pain,” “Go the distance,” and “Is this Heaven? No, it’s Iowa.”
Those lines are particularly pertinent to Harrisburg this summer. For the past couple of decades, we’ve been building here in Harrisburg, and they have been coming. As our population has steadily increased, people from all over have built their homes and businesses right here in our own fields of dreams. In fact, if you have lived here for longer than seven years or so, you may remember how the center of town—the intersection of Cliff and Willow—quite literally still had fields on two of the four corners. Those fields and the surrounding areas are now home to dozens of local businesses that have popped up over the past few years.
These business owners took a chance on our small community. They built it and the people have continued to come. This summer, however, we need to come together and step up our support of our local businesses. Let’s be honest. The road construction all over town – while worth it in the end – will be hugely inconvenient for everyone while it’s underway. We have to add a few extra minutes to our commute, navigate the changing detours, and deal with dust and dirt blowing around.
More notably, though, our businesses located in the construction zones are dealing with decreased traffic going past their locations and coming in their doors. It’s more than an inconvenience for them; it’s directly impacting their bottom lines. As I write this, we are about two weeks into the road closures. In the past 24 hours, I’ve talked with several of our impacted business owners, and they are already feeling the pinch. These are the same businesses that readily give back to the community by donating to school events, community fundraisers, Scout troops, athletic teams, and more. Now it’s our turn to “go the distance” and “ease their pain.”
Will it be inconvenient? A little. Will it take a few extra minutes? Probably. But is investing in our local businesses and our friends and neighbors who work there worth it? Absolutely. I strongly encourage you to make a deliberate effort this construction season to find your way through the detour and go the distance for our local businesses.
And don’t forget: It’s the sales tax revenue generated by shopping locally that provides the funding for projects like major road improvements in our ever-growing community. And if you’re one of the families who lives in southern Sioux Falls and will be driving down for sporting events this summer, we invite you to stop in to see our local business owners as well. They would sure appreciate your business at any time but especially during the construction. Let’s go the distance, Harrisburg, and help ease the pain of this construction season for our business owners. After all, this may not be Heaven, but it is Harrisburg –a great place to call home. //

ACE HARDWARE PROUD TO SERVE HARRISBURG
Ace Hardware has been serving the residents of Harrisburg since 2018. “We couldn’t be happier with our Harrisburg store,” said Jason Melcher, COO and part-owner of JW Niederauer Inc., the owner of the Harrisburg location and Ace locations in Tea, Brandon, Hartford, Lennox and Dell Rapids. “Harrisburg has embraced us and we look forward to continuing to grow with the community.”
While road construction this summer will present some unique challenges, Melcher said it’s manageable with patience and planning. “When completed, the construction in our area will be great for the town and great for our store’s location.” During construction, nothing has changed in how the store operates. There may need to be some detours on which entrance and exit to use, but the range of products available for area residents and businesses will be as available as every other summer. Customers can also order products online and Ace is happy to offer a delivery option for customers.
When planning started for the Harrisburg location, JW Niederauer Inc. believed the community was a natural choice because the company focuses on planting stores in growing communities around Sioux Falls. Now eight years later, led by store manager Eric Tutt, the location employs 26 full- and part-time staff.
Growth of the business requires development of employees. Both Melcher and Tutt highlighted that there are opportunities for career advancement within the organization that go beyond the walls of the Harrisburg location. The strength of the company is the people who interact with the customer and answer their questions. Ace offers training needed for employees to advance
their knowledge as sales associates all the way to being a store manager if that’s a career track a team member wants to pursue.
“We are proud of our products and the services we offer – and our best asset is our excellent customer service,” Tutt said. “When you walk into any of our stores, you will never have to search for an employee for help as we pride ourselves on outstanding customer service each and every time you shop our store.”
Ace has access to products beyond what’s carried in the stores. If a customer needs it, there is a very good chance it can be ordered. Ace offers multiple services to the customer such as a large selection of rental equipment, small engine repair, screen and glass replacement, mower blade and chainsaw chain sharpening, knife sharpening, key making and programming, live bait, propane fill including RVs, and UPS drop off and pick up. //

PAINTER DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM HIS TIME IN NATURE
When the sun goes down and his family is in bed, professional wildlife painter Adam Oswald picks up his brush to paint a ring-necked pheasant, exotic duck or big game, drawing inspiration from his time in nature as an avid sportsman .
“Nothing compares to sitting in a tree stand waiting for deer to make their move, or trudging through a slough anticipating the flush of ring-necked roosters,” Adam said. He finds it exciting just to be in nature, noticing the behavior of wild things such as birds pulling bugs from the dirt, squirrels jumping from branch to branch, the way trees sway in the wind and, most importantly, the effects of lighting conditions.
Adam and his family live in Harrisburg. His wife, Molly, works for Avera Health as an R.N. quality specialist. Their daughters, Eva, 9, and Kinley, 7, both attend Freedom Elementary. Adam also has two grown sons: Andrew works for Bierschbach Equipment & Supply and Mason works for Benson Lawn & Landscaping. Andrew and his girlfriend, Chaston, have a son named Barrett, who is almost two.
A graphic design graduate from Southeast Technical College, Adam’s full-time job is with the State of South Dakota’s Bureau of Information and Telecommunications. He works on the state’s website and applications, including design, maintenance and security. He enjoys the work and has been with the state for almost 15 years. “As a kid, I dreamt of painting fulltime, but it’s nice to have a regular paycheck. The other advantage is I can paint what I want to paint. I don’t have to paint certain things because they sell better.”
DUCK STAMP SUCCESS
Adam started drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil. Painting started in his teens while at Flandreau High School. He was fortunate to make the acquaintance of well-known wildlife artist John Green of Madison, who became a friend and mentor.
By Bob Fitch
Green encouraged Adam to enter duck stamp competitions. “These contests are great because they will humble you quickly when you see what the judges have to say.” He’s had success in the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp competition, placing fourth in 2020 and fifth in 2010, along with several top 20 finishes in the last dozen years. He also placed in the top five in several state competitions and captured first in: Wyoming Habitat Stamp, Oklahoma Duck Stamp and Nevada Duck Stamp (two-time winner).
His sales are driven by social media, word-of-mouth and repeat customers. A few collectors buy one of his paintings every year. Most of what he sells is original artwork, not prints. He also displays at the art show held in conjunction with the Governor’s Pheasant Opener.
Habitat and conservation are very important to Adam as well. Recently, two of his originals were sold at auction raising nearly $40,000 for the 2nd Century Habitat Fund.
People looking at a painting frequently want to know where a particular scene is from. His response: “Most of my paintings start with a combination of photos and memories of experiences I’ve had. As a painter, I can move or add features that make it more artistically pleasing.” While he uses reference photos, especially for details on birds and animals, “Rarely do I take a photo and paint it just the way it looks in the picture.”
18 CONNECTING THE HARRISBURG COMMUNITY LOCAL FAMILY PROFILE | OSWALD
Adam Oswald of Harrisburg at work in his studio
The goal is for each finished painting to tell a story. Most of his work starts with thumbnail sketches in very small blocks or circles to help shape the general composition. “There’s a lot of time planning before the painting ever starts.”
LIFE IN HARRISBURG
Adam and Molly moved to Harrisburg from Pierre in 2016 to be closer to his sons who had recently moved from Omaha to Harrisburg. “We couldn’t have picked a better neighborhood. Everyone’s super friendly. This neighborhood is like an idyllic TV show where the kids are outside playing and you don’t have to really worry about them, except maybe for traffic sometimes.” During the pandemic, they put a pool in their yard which led to close friendships with their backyard neighbors. “We kind of looked across the fence and said, ‘You know what? What if we just pretend that we’re one family so we can be around each other and let the kids play. So we put a gate between our yards and the kids came over to play. Mentally, I think that got us through everything.”
He described the Harrisburg School District as incredible. “Everything from the teachers to the infrastructure of our school district is amazing and growing. There are great opportunities here and in the area. I’ve got one daughter who is very heavy into sports (basketball and volleyball), but my youngest daughter is more artsy. She’s going to participate in the Harrisburg Summer Performing Arts Camp and couldn’t be more excited.”
While out for a walk last summer, they met a man who had just moved to Harrisburg from a large city. Adam said, “We stopped and shook hands and talked. Fifteen minutes later, we knew their story. He said to us, ‘You know, we lived next to people in the city for five years and we never met them.’ Harrisburg just has a small town feeling. You see a lot of the same people around town. People are walking and waving.” //

Students from welding classes at Harrisburg High School and Tea Area High School demonstrated their skills at the third annual “Welding Showdown” hosted by the DeGeest Corporation in Tea on March 24 . Tea Area High School captured the showdown traveling trophy this year .
HHS finished at the top in several individual skill contests. In the welding contest, HHS student Jadon Granberg took first and Jason Sipovich took second. In the tacking competition, Joel Campos won first place and Spencer Enstad won second.
The competition showcases careers in welding which require sought-after skill sets and are widening to offer specialty positions in robotics. The competition is judged by industry welding experts. The students perform a welding test similar to the one required of welders applying for a position at DeGeest Corporation.
“The Welding Showdown is a win-win event on so many levels,” said Josh Christiansen, ag/food/natural resources instructor and assistant FFA adviser at Harrisburg High School. “Students get to meet and learn from professionals in the industry and get to use more advanced equipment than is normally available in the school shop. The professionals from DeGeest and other participating companies also help me learn so I can better serve the students for years to come.”

He said the prizes and awards students can earn helps motivate them to learn the concepts and practice their skills. “It is more of a competition among themselves than it is a competition against welders from another school. I also like the event because students are able to get feedback about their welding from someone other than their instructor.”
During the event, parents also can learn about styles of welding (structural, industrial and artistic), practice bending steel using a brake press, experience welding on a Fronius welder, and get an up-close look at robotic welding. Christianson said, “Parents have told me they thought welding was a dirty job, but after seeing the opportunities at a business like DeGeest, they realize that there are many more opportunities, many of which have a high-tech component.”
DeGeest Corporation supports the welding programs at the schools with materials, supplies, guidance, class tours, and custom designed welding stations. //
