Industrial Garden of Eden

This splendid garden is located on former farmland in a pristine valley in the mountains, north of Longyan City, in China. Natural springs and the overflow of the mountain reservoir flow through the center of the mega industrial campus.

A CUSTOMER IN THE FIELD The customer Longking specializes in industrial environmental protection equipment and research.

A CASE OF SPECIES To create this romantic and colorful landscaping, BAM used the environmental technologies developed in-house. Thus, wastewater from the office tower is treated using the plant’s integrated wastewater treatment unit and then filtered through man-made and natural wetlands before being introduced into the landscape’s water system.

DETAILS THAT ADD UP Details add up to create an ecological and sustainable whole. This eloquent example says it all. Longking genetically engineers rice varieties that remove heavy metals from the topsoil. A conical tent structure invites itself to the site to prevent animals from entering the area of the ground containing heavy metals.

FANCY A GREEN TEA? Here, the landscape functions as a showcase for people to better understand the underlying natural processes on which we depend. A bamboo hatshaped tea house pavilion, sports fields and daybeds laid under a linear trellis offer production line workers, researchers and company personnel the opportunity to create a new form of recreational engagement while appropriating the various ecological processes and technologies that they develop in their days’ work.

Experiencing Nature’s Luxury

For this prestigious and emblematic landscaping project, the Chinese architects worked in close collaboration with famous Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha.

SHUFFLING THE CARDS The site occupies Chaoyang Park’s northern edge near the Old Prince’s Palace in Beijing. At the time of the garden’s design, the site’s architecture was a mixture of four occupied residential towers, five unoccupied towers, a club and several classical Chinese and Roman gatehouses in various states of functionality.

REIMAGINING A PARK For the landscape design, the architects took into account a beautiful woodland and weaved together disparate aspects of the site, into a seamless series of gardens, functional spaces and circulation routes. Existing landscape spaces mingling with new landscapes, conflicting styles, periods and cultural references are smoothed with the minimalist landscape approach of Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM).

THE PRINCIPLES OF CREATION A garden is not built in a day, it must grow. Luxury in the landscape is measured over time. When we look at a majestic or luxurious landscape, we see time itself. We see years of growth, years of maintenance, and seasonal progressions.

THE MAIN IDEA In the words of illustrious project collaborator Adrian Zecha: “Luxury is not a product, it is an experience”. Voilà!
