Hey, I’m Amanda! I am originally from Clearwater, Florida and moved to Colorado about 10 years ago. I love living in Colorado because there is so much to do outdoors! I especially love riding on motorcycles, and taking in all the beauty that Colorado has to offer. I have ridden on the back of a friends Harley to Colorado Springs for a bike festival, to Morrison, and Red Rocks. One time after work at around 1 am, some friends and I rode the bikes up to Boulder just for fun! I loved the wind in my hair and the adrenaline rush I got! One day I think I would like to ride a motorcycle by myself for once. I currently work as a Hooters Girl in Lakewood and I love it because it is a fun environment to work in! Bike Nights at Hooters are always exciting! I love to laugh and have a good time! I have an associate’s degree and I plan to go back to college soon. For now, I am enjoying my life and Family in Colorado! I'd like to thank Curt Williams from Sicker Images custom paint for bringing out his bike to use for these photos. Thanks Curt! And also to Patrick Glenn for taking these great photos! See you at the next Bike Night…

Pre-Hoka Hey • May 2010

The Final Preparations! W

ow! The days between now and the start of the Hoka Hey Challenge are really flying by! Here it is already Mother’s Day! Blair and I have both packed the bikes and headed out on some short but needed trips, and we’re riding as much as possible. Mother’s Day was a beautiful day to ride, so I made a “quick” trip to Brighton via Boulder, up and down Flagstaff, out Broadway to Lyons, across Highway 52 to Platteville, and down Highway 85 into Brighton. Like I said, we are riding whenever and wherever we can. Blair has had a little more time, so he and two of his friends have made a trek to Arkansas. They were in a hurry to get down there so it was all interstate, but on their return trip, they plan to take as many two lanes as possible. Should be a good practice run for Blair. One of my favorite places is Highway 287 North all the way from Texas. Gives a guy a sense of really being out there in the wilderness of the eastern plains. Fuel stops are very important out there, and the weather can change as fast as you can see it on the horizon. I’ve had a little practice with the tent, bedroll, and little bit of the “comforts” I plan to take along. The tent seems to take a little too long to set up, but in a big rain storm, I’m going to be glad I have it! As far as the “comforts,” while there isn’t much I’ll be able to take on the bike, I feel that after 800 to 1,000 miles a day, what I do have is going to feel pretty darn good. Hoka Hey rules were a little more specifically defined this past month. Organizers decided that no GPS or cell phones used for directions would be allowed. I do have a GPS, but now I plan to leave it at home. They’re great for having an interactive map to follow all the time, but as far as entering directions for something like the Hoka Hey, it would never work. The winner will be subject to a drug screening and a polygraph test, so that should weed out anyone who thinks he or she can cheat in any way. A big concern I have is reading the map! I certainly hope the font is large enough for us bifocal guys to handle it while still riding along at a good pace. In reading the blogs, there are alot of veterans entered into the Challenge -most of who are going for the adventure and having the chance of a lifetime to do something like this. There’s a small group who are really out there to go for it and prove they can do this in the shortest amount of time. I’ve read entries that say they can do it in six days, while others say they expect to cover 1,100 to 1,200 miles a day. The Hoka Hey organizers, however, believe that the truly fittest and toughest rider can make it from Key West, Florida, to Homer, Alaska in 10 days at best. They’re not going to just give that money away; you’re going to have to really earn it! It’s less than 30 days ‘til we head down in the truck to Key West, Florida. It gets more and more difficult to stop thinking about it, especially at night when a guy needs some serious rest after a long day at work. The new bikes are both broken in, and final service and check ups will be performed just before we leave.

Colorado Riders Embrace the Challenge!

For me the ride is more than a chance to make history and be a part of this challenge, or even a chance at the $500,000 in gold. I hope that on that long road I can find a way to drop off some “baggage” and think some things out along the way. Should be able to do it with that much time alone on the road with ones self. - Robbie Vinson

Finally! Ever since I saw the first Cannonball Run movie with Burt Reynolds some 25 years ago, I have been waiting for something like this to cross my path. I can’t think of a better way to test my endurance, determination, grit, and bladder control skills. This is the perfect event!. I have been all over this great county (including Alaska) on a bike, but never all at once. The chance to ride 7000 miles on one of a thousand American built Harleys from Key West Florida to Homer Alaska will be an amazing opportunity, challenge and experience. - Alex Hood I first herd about the Hoka Hey Challenge reading Bagger Magazine and thought no way could i do that race or take that much time off or if my bike would make 7000 miles. I thought about for about for couple of weeks and said this is a once and a life time race i got to make it happen. I’m very excited to do this race. And to do this ride with my Brother going to makes it a once and a life time trip for me. - Lee Vaughan I think this ride will be a lot of fun and torture at the same time, I am doing it because it is a once in a lifetime event and I don’t want to let it go by and wish I had done it, I am doing this with my brother and for those that can’t. I am still looking for sponsors to help with the cost, either as cash or equipment, anything extra will be donated to the charities benefited by this challenge. If interested call 720-641-8449. Thanks. - Tim Vaughan Just Ride - 9

Tips to Reduce Your Chances of Becoming a Motorcycle Accident Victim

Remain Visible • Remember that motorists often have difficulty seeing motorcycles and reacting in time. • Make sure to be on the look out and drive defensively. • Make sure your headlight works and is on at all times. • Use reflective stickers on your clothing and your bike. • Keep in mind the blind spots of car and truck drivers. • Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. • If a motorist doesn’t see you, don’t hesitate to use your horn.

Proper Attire • Wear eye protection and if you choose to wear a helmet, make sure it is a DOT approved helmet. • Choose bright and/or reflective clothing and a light-colored helmet. • Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing. • Choose long sleeves, pants, boots, and gloves. • The only thing between you and the road is your protective gear.

Apply Riding Strategies • Continually search the environment for changing conditions. • Keep a safe distance between you and others to allow for safe responses. • Give other motorists time and space to respond to you. • Use lane positioning to enhance visibility. • Be aware of turning vehicles. • Allow ample reaction time to your next move. • Avoid weaving between lanes. • Drive cautiously and defensively. • Avoid riding when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. • Understand and follow traffic laws.

Know Your Bike • Review bike manual upon purchase, ask questions. • Conduct inspection of bike before each ride to make sure everything is working properly. • Practice with your bike and varying conditions to develop effective riding techniques. • Be prepared for all sorts of riding conditions, such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces.

Do You Need Training?

So you believe in freedom, that’s part of the reason you got a bike. The same reason you got a gun, you’re a citizen not a subject; but are you ready? Are you really prepared to your fullest potential? The first day you got your bike; did you jump right on and take a 5000 mile road trip? Or did you test the waters, maybe take a rider safety course. Do you actually know what you’re doing? Those of you that have taken the lessons are typically better and safer riders. I know the type of crowd that follows guns and bikes; they’re my type of people. But with both guns and motorcycles it’s the nature of the beast, most of us are too macho to swallow our well deserved pride and take advice and instruction from another. You want to think that you came out of the womb with a throttle in one hand and a pistol in the other. But you didn’t, we’ve seen many people come through various different types of training, law enforcement and the private sector. We always get one that says, “Yeah, I’ve been shooting my whole life, I’m just here for the certificate” or think that there’s nothing I could possibly teach them. The fact of the matter is, 99.9% of the time they come back and tell me that I was right, even if it was one thing they took from the class, it was still a lesson learned. I do a lot of expert witness work in the courtroom. I am absolutely confident if any of those people that had done something questionable, something that landed them with criminal charges and a court proceeding, with proper training would have never been in the position. Why spend tens of thousands of dollars in the Criminal “Justice” system? Not to mention your valuable time, when you can just take a simple class and learn how to avoid these situations. It’s likely I can save you money; at the very least I can save you frustration and/or embarrassment. Spend the time and money to take our essential pistol or our general pistol class; it will give you the peace of mind to know that you can adequately handle a situation that may cost you. In these classes we first familiarize you with the types of firearms out there and specifically the one you use. Further, we get you so confident with your pistol that you can draw from concealment in under a second and a half, this means you can draw your gun and shoot someone that has you at gunpoint before they can think to pull the trigger. Most self defense training is shorter than three days, three days is the minim that we can teach you the basics to properly defend yourself. Why are the others shorter? Maybe they don’t have enough to teach. The truth is the hourly courses give you a false sense of security, we can leave you assured that you can push a situation to turn out in your favor. All classes are backed by a 100% money back guarantee, we’ve never refunded anyone, popular feedback says if they knew what they were getting, they’d pay more. Next time your strappin’ on your piece and hoppin’ on your hog to ride off into the sunset be prepared, both in your ability to ride and the ability to handle your gun so it’s not your last sunset.

Decline in Colorado Motorcycle Fatalities is Good and Bad News State Encourages Motorists to Watch Out and Riders to Get Training DENVER — After reaching a record of 98 motorcycle fatalities in 2008, the Colorado Department of Transportation reports that the state had a 10 percent decline in rider deaths to 88 in 2009. However, when compared to all traffic fatalities, the percentage of those that were motorcycle deaths actually rose slightly to represent 19 percent of Colorado’s motor vehicle fatalities, compared to 18 percent in 2008. “While the overall decline in rider deaths is encouraging, we recognize that nearly 1 in 5 people killed on our roadways last year were riding a motorcycle, and we are taking that very seriously,” said Pam Hutton, CDOT’s chief engineer and governor’s representative for highway safety. “We are committed to addressing this issue from every angle, from rider education to motorist awareness.” As part of National Motorcycle Safety Month, CDOT is posting messages on the state’s variable message signs to remind drivers to watch out for motorcycles. CDOT will also continue its “Live to Ride” campaign throughout the spring and summer, by addressing rider safety issues, including the use of proper gear, riding sober, and the need for rider training. Larimer County recorded the highest number of motorcycle fatalities in 2009, a significant jump in fatalities from just 3 in 2008 to 13 last year. El Paso County recorded 11, down from 15 in 2008. There were 7 motorcycle fatalities in each of the following counties: Jefferson, Adams, and Arapahoe. Boulder and Weld counties each had 6. A consistent factor in Colorado’s motorcycle fatalities is the high number of riders determined by investigators to be “at fault” in fatal crashes. Last year, 72 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes were blamed on the rider. And more than one-third of riders killed in 2009 did not have a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license, which is required by law. Older riders age 45 to 64 continue to be over-represented in statistics, comprising half of all fatalities in 2009. “There’s no doubt that some of these deaths could have been avoided if the rider had been properly trained to understand the dynamics of their bike and how to handle various road conditions and curves,” said Col. James Wolfinbarger, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “Whether you’ve been riding for 25 years or just beginning, there’s always something to learn by taking a beginning or advanced training class.” To provide high-quality motorcycle training at a lower cost, CDOT oversees a state-supported motorcycle training program called MOST (Motorcycle Operator Safety Training), setting standards for proper training facilities and qualified trainers. Riders who pass a MOST class can simply take the completion card to a state driver’s license office to get an endorsement with no further testing needed. More information and a list of the state’s MOSTcertified trainers can be found at www.CoMotorcycleSafety.com.

“Riding a motorcycle requires skill and concentration that is impossible to maintain when you’ve had too much to drink,” said Col. Wolfinbarger. “Know your limits and respect the sport. If you don’t, expect to get arrested because we’ll be out in force all summer to put an end to impaired riding and driving.” For more information about CDOT’s Live to Ride campaign and the MOST program, please visit www.CoMotorcycleSafety.com.

Hello fellow Campers, Dirt bike riders, ATVers, Etc… If you enjoy the outdoors and your right to ride, camp, hike, mountain bike etc, please give me a minute of your time! There are groups out there trying to close down forests to ALL activities including hiking, camping and OHV use! It starts with the group with the smallest voice… the OHV riders. Last night I read an article in American Motorcyclist Magazine, put out by the AMA that disturbed me very much, and I'm passing on the informaion to you in hopes that you will pass it on to all you know because time is of the essence! The forest service management is under review for the new Land and Resource Management Planning Rule. What this means in a nutshell is that they are reviewing the needs of the forest system, such as restoration, watersheds, and recreation issues. Indications are that off-highway riding may get forced out of the forests unless riders show up and speak up at these meetings! What does this mean to you? Well, if you ride a dirt bike, ATV, or other OHV, your future fun is on the chopping block, and if you simply camp or hike, just wait, you'll be next! That's how its done. They start with the OHVers because we are considered "offensive" then they move to get all other activities banned in our forests. The same forests that our tax dollars go to in the form of Parks and Recreation!!! Not to mention that the trickle down effect will soon be the banning of ALL motorcycle riding in our mountain areas!!! If you don't believe me, just check it out on the Internet; there are several areas around our nation that have been able to ban the riding of Harley Davidson's, or any other motor cycle that makes noise, thru their towns and scenic areas!!! ALSO, in Illinois, state rep. Mary Flowers is trying to ban kids from riding ATVs and off-highway motorcycles if they are under the age of 16. This is craziness! I will say it again.....we are quickly loosing our rights as tax paying citizens, and if you don't think it will affect you and what you like to do, you are wrong. Don't let this happen! Please show up at the meeting scheduled below! And please forward this email to all you know who use the forests for family fun and recreation! Our rights are being taken away one at a time, and it will eventually effect YOU! I have pasted the web site page that shows the dates and location of the meetings below, but please go to the Forest Service web site to find the page below for registration information and all other information on the subject! www.FS.USDA.gov/planningrule

The lack of helmets is also a major factor in the state’s motorcycle fatalities. In 2009, 68 percent of riders killed did not wear a helmet or it was worn improperly. Colorado does not have an adult helmet law, however riders and passengers under age 18 are required by law to wear one. Riding under the influence of alcohol is also a big problem. Last year, 40 percent of riders involved in fatal crashes had been drinking.

The 2nd AnnuAl

ATV

Challenge & Sled Pull Story and photos by Angie Case and Steve Babirad

I

n these tough economic times it really makes me feel good to see so many people and businesses still take the time and money to organize charity events. The 2nd Annual ATV Challenge & Quad Stopper/Sled Pull was one such event. The venue for this event was the Johnston family farm just outside of Erie, CO. On the chilly, overcast morning of May 2nd, I met Cody, Darrell Johnston's youngest son who is 21. Cody has a brain that functions similarly to a 4 year olds. He is the inspiration for his father Darrell who organized this event and all it’s proceeds which are donated to the Special Olympics. Cody has participated in the Special Olympics in the past and his father had this to say about that experience,” It’s something that kids like Cody can do that lets them feel like they are just like everyone else." The ATV challenge course consisted of a teeter-totter, big mud pit, log section, traffic cone weave, along with some jumps and ditches. To finish the course, each rider had to park their ATV at the finish line, dismount, grab a stick on one side of the finish, and drop it in a bucket on the opposite side. There were two courses set up side by side so that two ATV's could run at once. The fastest times in each class took home the trophy. The first class to take on the course was the 2wd, and it wasn't long before a rider went head first over the bars and into the mud pit. The rider who was “bucked off”, Cody Irby who is a mechanic at Coyote Motorsports typically rides a dirt bike, but decided to try something new. When I asked him if riding on four wheels is any easier, he responded “it takes just as much skill as 2 wheels." Cody also raced in the 4wd class. Both quads were supplied by Coyote Motorsports in Denver.

Garth Butler, a sales rep for MTA, came out to show his support of local event and participated in the sled pull on his brand new, just out of the crate, Can-Am Renegade800 ATV. It still had bits of plastic film from the crate stuck to his front brush guard. *"Fast Freddy" McLaughlin raced in 4x4 600cc and up class, and his daughter in-law, Leah, raced the in the women’s class on their Bruteforce 750 FI (fuel injected) The first ATV Challenge & Sled Pull was held last September and the Johnstons are hoping to have another one this fall. The event was sponsored by Coyote Motorsports and they are hoping to get Sun Enterprises on board as sponsors for the fall event. The Quad Stopper sled pull was put on by J.M. and his wife Brenda, along with Tucker of Rocky Ford. The sled, which was built by J.M. and a friend of his and supplied by Rocky Ford, can be set up for ATV’s ranging from 2wd all the way up to the big UTV’s. The Challenge was organized and run by The Front Range Young Farmers, a non-profit organization with 15,000 members nationwide, the Front Range chapter has 24 members. The organization participates in community services ranging from food banks to scholarships to sponsoring Adams and Weld County fairs. In addition to the trophies for the class winners, there were plenty of prizes like t-shirts, gift certificates and coolers with builtin radios just to name a few, that were given away to spectators and racers. Everyone who came out to race, or just watch, was treated to a great time for an even greater cause! Open House Specials All Day Live Music & Refreshments FREE Giveaways Come Meet RMK Race Teams

Valley Dirt Riders

Hare Scramble Photos by Jeff Thompson Berthoud, CO – May 2, The first Saturday of May turned out to be much better than the previous weekends in April. Temperatures were in the 50’s as the first wave of ATV riders took the green flag for one of the last races of the year. For those of you who don’t know what a “Hare Scramble” is, well it is a combination of a motocross and enduro or cross county race. Riders are classified by experience level as well as the engine displacement of their ATV or motorcycle. The object of the race is to complete as many laps on a given course which can vary in size from 2 miles to 40+ miles. Riders attempt to keep their lap times, the recorded time it takes to complete one full lap around the course, as close to each other as possible. So not only is this an endurance race, sometimes lasting hours, but it also requires a level of skill and consistency over a lengthy period of time. Racers ranged in age from as young as 7 yrs old all the way up to riders in their late 50’s. Many of the local motorcycle and ATV dealers sponsor riders, many of whom work at the respective dealerships. The atmosphere is very “family friendly”, often times both Dad and the kids, boys and girls alike, as well as Mom, participate in the different classes of racing. And if they’re not actually racing, the other family members are there for support, whether just to cheer them on, or to actually assist with the pit duties. Hare Scrambles are typically held from late fall up until early spring. The day turned out to be one of the nicer spring days and the racing action was equally enjoyable. After the finish of the ATV racing the dirt bikes hit the track as the various classes headed off in a cloud of dust. The track has several good vantage points from which you can follow the action. The Valley Dirt Riders facility in Berthoud, you can see it just west of I-25, also hosts several other forms of off-road racing throughout the year. Supermoto 5280 2010 Season Opener

Photos by Jeff Thompson Story by Angie Case

May 9, Erie, CO – The first race of the season took place under sunny blue skies with the temperature in the 70's. The smell of racing fuel coming from the exhaust pipes of the racing bikes filled the air at IMI Raceway in Erie, CO. The track consists of half pavement and half dirt, bringing out the best of both worlds and presenting the riders with a formidable challenge. The Supermoto 5280 race series is put on by Kevin Bland, owner of Epic Motorsports in Longmont, CO. The turn out of spectators and racers was pretty impressive, especially considering that it was Father’s Day! Both racers and fans were treated to a good day of racing action. Alan Fernandez Placed 1st in the Veterans 35 and over class and asphalt. He has won the Asphalt championship the last two years. Alan started racing Supermoto three years ago and says “he loves it because it’s very family orientated and it’s comparatively less expensive that other types of racing. I really enjoy the sport and would like to see it grow." he says *I would also like to thank Epic Motorsports and my wife and kids for their support.” For more information on the Supermoto 5280 racing series you can visit www.supermoto5280 or call Kevin at Epic Motorsports 303-485-1858

TECH TIP High Country Harley Davidson

Keep Your Bike on the Road!

High Country Harley-Davidson®/Buell® held a special event on Friday, April 23rd for its H.O.G. Chapter members – to help them learn more about what to do if something goes wrong with their bike, especially when they are on the road. The H.O.G. Chapter members expressed a keen interest in learning about what to do if, for example, their bike broke down in the middle of Wyoming. How would they know what went wrong? Could it be a burned-out fuse? How would they know which fuse it was? What would it mean if there were two lines on the dipstick? What else could be the problem? There were also questions about what, exactly, they needed to be do to get their bike ready for Spring. Lots of questions, actually. Well, High Country’s technicians were more than willing to help. At the event, they covered a multitude of items relating to bike maintenance. From preventative maintenance to simple lists of items to check to insights on what can be fixed on the road – and how to fix it - in case of an emergency. Overall, the technicians helped the Chapter members understand what maintenance work they can do themselves and what needs to be done at the dealership by someone with the right tools and training. Teri Hull, the Chapter’s Director said, “It was great. We had a very good turnout and everyone’s feedback was that they learned a lot. We couldn’t have asked the technicians to be more open or helpful.” She added, “The fact that people brought food and drinks helped make it into a really fun, social event.”

Pueblo Bikers Bash Story and photos by Shannon Henry

T

he Third Annual Pueblo Bikers Bash was held last Sunday, May 2nd, in of all places....Pueblo, CO. With bikes filling the lot north of the canal at the Steel Museum, and a bike and hot rod show that covered the remaining two lots, the event grounds were filled. Many of the riders came in from Colorado Springs and even as far away as New Mexico, joining in with the local riders from Pueblo. The event was a huge success dispite the cold winter like weather on this early spring day. Venders were out selling there goods as the music played and people danced, or just hung out with friends and fellow riders. Bessemer Customs of Pueblo had their 127 Ultimo Harley on display, the bike drew a lot of attention. Freddy Trujillo said it was there third year bringing out his Cha-Cha. The burn out pit was also a big hit, street bikers, choppers, and even a dirt bike took their respective turn at seeing how much smoke they could produce. A group of five guys who call themselves the "dirty old bastards" organized the bash, The Steel Museum donated the space, and the H.O.G. Chapter out of Pueblo was in charge of the bike show and donated all of the trophies. With lots of planning and help from all the sponsors to pull it all together The Third Annual Pueblo Bikers Bash was fun for all!

Maybe this event just goes to show that some Harley-Davidson® dealers are about more than just grabbing dollars every chance they get. The best ones are about community, helping their loyal customers get more out of their riding lifestyle, and perhaps most importantly, having fun! Just Ride - 19

Warren Tech Car & Bike Show From Warren Tech staff and students‌ We would like to send our thanks to all participants and spectators who came to the show on May 8th. The Car and Motorcycle show was a success. We had a total of 86 registered cars and motorcycles at the show. The students who judged the show learned how serious car and motorcycle enthusiast are about the vehicles they bring to a show. They also learned how small details make a difference between 1st and 2nd and how hard it can be when you are looking at so many pieces of art. The Show raised funds to help our students with their Skills USA program. Skills USA is a student organization where students can compete in the vocational area of study. This year Warren Tech is taking 18 students to the national competition in June. The School is wrapping up for the year and will be starting back up in August. It is a great place for consumers to get their motorcycles or cars repaired and help young adults get a jump start on their future. We perform all types of repairs from power

High Performance Motorcycle Cams Part 1 of a Series An exceprt from the book by Craig & Victoria Lockwood of Black Widow Cams, Littleton, Colorado.

Order Your Copy Online at www.blackwidowcams.com I. An Introduction MOTORCYCLE owners the world over are constantly striving either to improve the power performance of their existing machines or to build one especially intended for competition use. Underlying this urge to go fast is usually the desire to emerge triumphant in various competitions be they TT’s, scrambles, trials, road races or “street” eliminations. It’s true that a considerable gain in performance can be had in a production motorcycle by spending a certain amount of time and energy on the engine and that even more improvement can be made by additions or substitutions of component parts - depending upon to what expense one is willing to go in his quest for speed. Even if final costs are high, the satisfaction of victory can be justification enough. Where pure competition, such as road racing or sprints is the sole use for the machine, speed immediately becomes of utmost importance with smooth idling and fuel economy playing only insignificant roles. There are, however, a great number of cyclists eager to participate in the various types of semi-stock racing which can satisfy their speed aspirations at a minimum cost. Practically no private cycle owners and few workshops where engines are prepared possess dynamometers or proper test equipment, so the success of any alteration can only be assessed by “seat of the pants” trials, which are not always accurate. Without test equipment “chance” experimentation in tuning can only be conducted on a “trial and error” basis and may end in unfortunate results as well as being a laborious process. In this type of game the wealthier competitor often has the competitive edge over less financially able racers as he can afford the more exotic test equipment which in turn contributes to his better performance. This situation, however, needn’t be a handicap

to budget minded racing enthusiasts providing they utilize knowledge already in existence in this and other similar texts. The art of successful engine tuning is as much knowing what not to do as well as what to do. More races are lost through some seemingly small defect or overlooked factor than by stellar performances. This book, therefore, endeavors to fill the gap in the private owner’s knowledge of camshafts - their design, construction, operating principles and applications. It does not pretend to supplant an engineer’s treatise on the subject, but is intended to provide a general acquaintance with a highly specialized field. It acknowledges that in the area of theoretical engineering applications there is a very fine, sometimes indistinguishable, line of distinction between engineering fact and engineering opinion. This text is in part the summation of popular engineering opinion and the principles by which Harman & Collins, Inc., is guided in its research and development program. In taking the wraps off this book it is hoped that the reader may become better able to assess his component needs and be apprised of the many distinct advantages of the high performance motorcycle camshaft. 2. Theories Of Power -It’s Source THE primary ability of the internal combustion engine to produce power is dependent upon two factors: (1) The volume of fuel/air mixture it can ingest and burn per minute and (2) The percentage of heat generated which is turned into useful work. Aside from considerations of bore and stroke, the first factor is largely determined by the engine’s breathing apparatus (ie: its valve gear, intake layout and carburetion) while the second factor is mostly dependent upon compression ratio, combustion chamber shape, valve timing and ignition advance. The importance of an engine’s breathing ability (volumetric efficiency) is readily seen in the contrast between average touring motorcycles · which develop an advertised 30 to 50 horsepower and the exotic factory GP engines of similar and even smaller displacement which produce up to 240 b.h.p. per liter. One of the primary reasons for such tremendous power development is that factory “works” engines utilize extremely efficient valve gear. Another reason is they are built as a collection of singles - each cylinder with its own carburetor and exhaust. Since single cylinder engines have little problem with mixture distribution they make full use of resonance waves in both inlet and exhaust systems which allows good breathing at high rpm. Cylinder head design is equally as important, for only by using a properly designed head with efficient porting can the engine induct and burn the largest charge of combustible mixture for a given cubic capacity. This assumes that the rest of the engine is built accordingly. During the last 23 years the engineering staff at H & C has been conducting studies in motorcycle engine combustion chamber shapes, valve and port layouts and properties of combustion. The significance of this research is apparent when one realizes that camshaft design is first approached by conducting such studies before attempting to modify the basic design in use. The weather didn’t give us much help on Friday and the event was postponed, however Saturday turned out to be a great day with many riders attendance. Under threatening skies and a dismal forecast the ride went on! We kicked off the day a few rides but by early afternoon we were in full swing with the sun shining and the Victory engines roaring as Pam, our rode captain, lead the winding ride throughout Thornton. The highly anticipated Cross Roads and Cross Country were the most sought after bikes, as many lined up to take their demo ride on the new machines. Other models represented included the Vision, Hammer and Kingpin. We had a great weekend at Colorado Powersports and we look forward to a great summer ahead. We would like to thank Pam Redfern-Ward, Tircia Glennie and Kurt Finely for their combined effort to make this a successful event. Be sure to mark your calendars Saturday June 19th as the Fuel It Demo Tour will make a “one day only” special appearance at Colorado Powersports from 9-5 due the Friday rainout. For more information visit www.copowersports.com or call (303) 427-9000. See you soon! Just Ride - 25
