A GLASS TO THE WELLBEING OF DORNBIRN “The strength of Dornbirn is its people ...” says Ekkehard Bechtold (President of the Kunstraum Dornbirn) in one of our interviews. And he is absolutely right! In this edition of our magazine we present some of the interesting personalities from and within Dornbirn and show how and what – sometimes with their heads, sometimes with their hands – they themselves bring to their city. They create shoes and stones, berries and beds, cutting blades and culinary delights (page 38), maintain customs and rituals (page 28) and develop new ideas (page 44). But that’s not all. In our city there are many new hotspots that are worth exploring. In addition to these new venues, we have also dug out the best shopping tips for you. And all this – as it should be – in “doarobiorarisch”. Because the regional dialect of Dornbirn is alive and kicking and is constantly evolving further. The famous dialect expert and analyst Albert Bohle collected terms and expressions for many years and we have gathered a few
together for you in this edition. A small taster: would you know off the top of your head what “Gobowar” are, or maybe a “Boaz”? For an explanation have a look at page 11. As original as the words are that come out of the mouths of a Dornbirner, so traditional are also their rituals: at the beginning of November the whole of Dornbirn is not only thinking of the beginning of the carnival period, but also celebrates the legendary St. Martin’s Day Market. Good Friday is celebrated with rattles and on Bonfire Sunday the whole city lights up. We raise a glass to these traditions, people and inspirations in Dornbirn and make a toast to this multifaceted city in the middle of the Rhine Valley. Or to use the words of a well-known poet in our dialect: ‘A Glas uf ’s Wohl vo Doarobioro, der Tradition tröü und modern. Wer ka sä ’s uf nio scho mi iohro – der Stadt, wo mir heand uofach gern”. [A glass to the wellbeing of Dornbirn – true to tradition and modern. There is no other city like it.]

… are questions not only asked in the German children’s TV hit “Die Sendung mit der Maus”. The City Guide 6850 presents a guide to the people behind Dornbirn Tourismus & Stadtmarketing, so that we too can provide an answer to the questions “who, how, what?”.

Herbert Kaufmann is not only the head of Dornbirn Tourismus & Stadtmarketing, rather he is also in charge of the Karren cable car, the stadtbad and Waldbad Enz indoor and outdoor swimming pools and the lifts at Ebnit and on the Bödele. Even when dealing with several companies at once, he is always able to keep a cool head.
Klaus Lingg is the “veteran” of the tourism business and has been the head of the tourism department and of the counter since 1994. Since 2018 he has also been in charge of the digital initiatives of the city of Dornbirn. He finds the change and the volume of information that the customer receives today to be particularly impressive.
Thomas Gangl is a passionate football referee, who his friends would describe as not being your classic accountant. However, thanks to his love of numbers he is perfectly suited to his job and looks after the exacting matters of wages, invoices and statistics.
Elfi Raith is a project manager with many years of experience and lovingly cares for the St. Martin’s Day Market and the Christmas Market. She is particularly fond of the St. Martin’s Day Market with its nostalgic atmosphere and “Lüt im alto Häß” [people in historical clothing].
Laura Waibel loves the colourful mix of projects. Her main task is the organisation of events around the marketplace. She is only happy when the marketplace is full and people are enjoying themselves. When not doing this, she ploughs her enthusiasm and talent into preparation of the City Guide.
Jennifer Hämmerle is our events manager from Lustenau and is responsible for the organisation of events from A to Z and also for digital affairs. She has a talent for keeping everything in her head and for being able to switch between the various themes and events.

Barbara Heine loves working on the tourism counter because she never knows what is coming next and always has a solution close at hand. She also makes sure that the cash register is correct every day, keeps track of the statistics and takes care of the advertising spaces in Dornbirn.
Elias Krevatin is the cub of the Dornbirn Tourismus family, however has already successfully put several projects in motion. In addition to the organisation of trade fair appearances, advertising spaces and looking after customers, he is also often to be found as presenter and DJ at functions on Dornbirn’s marketplace.
Dagmar Martinez is the person to see for a secret tip, ticket or hotel. Dagmar is happy to advise tourists in German, English or even in perfect Spanish. As a result of her experience, she has become known to regular clients as “the lady with the best tips”.

Sabine Kofler-Gabriel not only takes the lead role in events such as the floral decoration competition or the Europafest, she also provides background support to the project leaders of other events. Her tip in Dornbirn: the Kirchle (a late ice age natural landmark, more on page 62) above the Alploch gorge.
Jürgen Kostelac is passionate about his outdoor hobbies and is therefore the right man to take care of the stadtbad and Waldbad Enz public pools and the Karren cable car. He is also overseeing the construction of the new camp site and is a mine of information when it comes to hiking or swimming.

MORE THAN "BÖDELEDÜTSCH"! TEXT Myrthe Liebschick
Happlily laughed off as “Bödeledütsch*”, the linguistic usage of the inhabitants of Dornbirn is one of the most varied within Alemannic German. And those who hear it within our city certainly know that the Dornbirner dialect is alive and kicking. Some words change, new ones arrive and old words come back to life. The dialect expert Albert Bohle spent many years noting down commonly used expressions and then published these as a compendium. From A for “arko” [to meet coincidentally] to Z for “zweag ko” [to get along] everything is there – and the indigenous Dornbirner even knows some swearwords in his own dialect. In this edition we dedicate ourselves to certain time-honoured expressions and wish “Fröuda wia Hüsor” [to be very pleased about something] when reading. Bisch a klä agschlago? — to be somewhat ill. Not every Dornbirner who becomes ill is immediately ill. One is only really ill, if one is confined to a bed and can hardly move. Until then one is “a klä agschlago”. I woas nid, wo ne de ahne tua söll — I recognise you, however I don’t know your name/your family. Dornbirners have curiosity in their blood. If one meets someone who one may theoretically possibly know, one casually utters the sentence and one then receives an explanation of origin, surname or house name.
d’ Gobo/Gobowar — children/swarm of children. Children are a favourite topic for a little small talk. One happily asks about “d’Gobo” – or if these are larking about too loudly, they are complained about as “Gobowar”. i hio n an Boaz uf — incentive, I am angry – or – I have a yearning for something. In the Dornbirn dialect “Boaz hio’ can be used in several ways: either one has a yearning to do something or – as a quite different use – one is annoyed with someone. If the person hearing this expression does not pay precise attention to the tone in which this is said, this could quickly lead to misunderstanding. Du moanst woll, i hei an Gealdschißar? — Do you think I have unlimited amounts of money?! Not formulated in a very friendly manner, however when one person is always expected to absorb the costs for another person, this sentence can be used to express the point. Geall! — Is that not true!? This expression/question can be heard readily and often on the streets of Dornbirn. Ultimately a Dornbirner wishes his statement to be confirmed. One simply attaches the expression “Geall!’ to the end of a sentence and waits for a confirmatory response. Often the conversation will then continue without waiting for confirmation. After all there is a lot to talk about ...
* A contemptuous term for the high-German/dialect mixed language used by café society

MASS MIGRATION AFTER THE ALPINE SUMMER TEXT Barbara Schmiedehausen PHOTOGRAPHY Otmar Heidegger
Can cows be proud? Yes, they can. You just have to look at them on their journey down from the alps back into the valleys, wearing their jewellery of herbs, twigs and flowers after a long summer on the mountain. When they arrive after their weary journey to be handed back to their owners at the distribution place at the Enz. Each year there is a public celebration when cattle and herdsmen return safely to the valley free of harm.
ALPINE FARMING IN DORNBIRN 30 of the 54 registered Alps in the Dornbirn municipal area are farmed, the total area used for Alpine farming extends over approximately 2,358 hectares. Family tradition — Dornbirn’s Alps are often farmed by the same families for many decades. Traditional knowledge is passed down to the children.
6850 — LEISURE
The summer was very long, the alpine grass long and juicy. Young cattle have eaten their fill, milking cows have extracted from the mountain herbs the best basis for alpine cheese. The calves have enjoyed their paradise, but now they must go to their winter barns. Only the bull has not been able to relax. During his summer in the natural mountain surroundings he has overexerted himself so much with the ladies that he is somewhat emaciated and must now regain his strength over the winter. Until the next Alpine summer.
15
With relief — After more than 100 days on the mountain both man and beast return to the valleys. The work was often hard, the days long. At the end there is pride and relief.
PRODUCTION 300,000 to 350,000 kg of milk is produced per season. 66 horses, 172 sheep, 28 goats, 1,294 young cattle below 2 years, 778 young cattle above 2 years and 259 milking cows feed on the Dornbirn Alps. Milking Alps — Milking takes place on Ammenegg, Buela, Lindach, Schwende. Dairy Alps — The milk is processed into Alpine cheese on the Alps Schönenmann and Untermörzel.

The focus here is on trial and error, play, experience and touch. The journey leads through the typical ecological habitats to be found in Vorarlberg, mountains, forest and water. At the end we cross the boundaries of the possible and explore ourselves, in the truest sense of the word. inatura opens up our bodies and looks inside. Interactive and multimedia presentations explore and explain the fine balance between living and survival and give insights into the wonders of nature, of mankind and of its technical achievements. On the journey through inatura’s permanent exhibition you will not only hear extraordinary tales of historic industrial architecture, you will also encounter a series of technical stations – the Science Zones. These interactive stations are designed to simultaneously entertain and educate on technical and physical phenomena. A fascinating experience.
invites everyone, young and old alike, on a global journey on the trail of our foodstuffs. Every one of us should be aware that every day, and with every meal we eat, we are changing our world. Whether we want to or not. For this reason we embark upon a journey to distant continents and visit children in five countries. They tell us about their food and from where it comes. We experience what products that are important to us come from these countries, how and by whom they are produced and how healthy these are for us and for our environment. We follow these foodstuffs on their journeys to our plates. During this we discover ancient knowledge that must not be lost forever and meet people who are developing and living out alternatives today. Hey you revolutionaries, nerds and followers. The like-button for the old dress-code is taking a break! Applications & accessories are the new apps. Colour-blocking goes with stripes and checks – folk costume is in town and lacquer across the countryside. Pattern mix rocks the chaos theory. Hooks and eyes provide the model style with strong eyewear and smart bags. Back to the comfort-zone with statement pullovers to gender silk shirt and western to twisted yarn and costume. The watch-list for jewellery & watches is long, there is a warning against fake fur and leather. Even pleated skirts and lace dress-
es with glen check and denim are going vegan. OMG. What will happen to the poor fashion-victims and defined trends? If bold comics with plain collars, luxury becomes sustainable or 80s pads merge with the present. Don’t ask your doctor or influencer. Help comes from Dornbirn’s shops and stores with cult-avantgarde labels. Combined without net. Outrageous footwear with dress or slender heels with ribbons. The main thing is the right shoes for new paths! Grunge and shine, innovative vintage borrowings, looks from shrill to pure: it’s showtime in the fashionable Anthropocene!

LIFE IS JUST ONE BIG PARTY TEXT Barbara Schmiedehausen
Before the dawn of smartphones and social media, the Vorarlbergers were reliant upon other sources of news and gossip. The partner market was analogue and not dependent on Tinder. For this reason traditional events where used to cultivate the social networks – back then we used to call them “friendships” – in order to check out the marriage market. The consumption of spirited beverages was not unusual in contributing to the success
of an exchange of knowledge, half knowledge and infamy. Many traditions are based loosely around the ecclesiastical feast day calendar, however amazingly there are many more attendees of traditional events than there are devotees to the Church. This may well be the case because the inhabitants of Dornbirn love to get together for a party. Eye to eye, up close and personal. They are a sociable bunch.
Moa — “Moa” (from “Mo”, moon) is an annual tradition at the beginning of the cold time of the year, however is considerably older than Halloween, which has been introduced to us relatively recently. During Moa children wander from house to house with carved pumpkins and kindly greetings. As a reward they are given fruit, sweets or even a few coins. However there are no threats of retaliation if the visitees do not fork out any candy.
St. Martin’s Day Market — The beginning of November is not only the start of the carnival period. Each year around St. Martin’s Day a market is traditionally celebrated in Dornbirn. “Lüt im alto Häss” – citizens in historical dress – occupy the marketplace and together salute the patron saint of the parish church. There are also many culinary treats on offer and the Dornbirners gather in groups long into the night at the local bars and cafes.

Gumpiga Dunnschtag — “Gumpig” or “schmutzig” Thursday is the start of the last days of Carnival. The word “schmutzig” comes from the Alemannic word “Schmut(z)” meaning “fat”. On this Thursday before Carnival Sunday the beloved “Küachle” [fritters] are cooked up in hot fat [= “Schmutz”]. The old traditon of roast stealing also falls on gumpiga Dunnschtag and is still practised with aplomb in Dornbirn. As a cook you should keep an especially close eye on your oven on this day, otherwise you may find that your dinner goes missing.
Funkensonntag [Bonfire Sunday] — The traditional fires burn across the whole Vorarlberg region, and in Dornbirn the fires are numerous and piled up high. On the Sunday following Ash Wednesday the Christmas trees and other stockpiled wood is piled up high and set on fire, with the artistically decorated witch dressed in rags perched atop the bonfire. Traditionally the bonfire drives out the winter. Also dished out readily at the bonfire parties are “Funkenküachle”, a yeast fritter speciality from Dornbirn.

Easter rattles — On Good Friday the church bells in Dornbirn fall silent. Instead the alter boys swing their home-made rattles at three in the afternoon as a “children’s Stations of the Cross”. The ear-splitting racket reminds all inhabitants of the city of the most important day of the religious year. On Holy Saturday the children then swing their rattles again in the whole of Dornbirn instead of the church bells at midday.
Cattle procession — The Alps belonging to the city of Dornbirn are numerous and far-reaching. Spread over approximately 200 hectares, around 2,500 cattle and other domesticated animals wander through the idyllic landscape. In September, after a long summer on one of the 54 Alps, the animals return beautifully decorated to the valley below, where they are greeted joyously by their owners and other curious bystanders.

Dornbirn’s own mountain — The Karren does not make the decision easy: a sweaty hike to the top in about an hour? Or a leisurely float up in the cable car? Take one’s place directly at the top in the Panorama Restaurant or stroll down for five minutes to the rustic Alpine inn Kühberg? Afterwards a three quarters of an hour walk up to the summit of the Staufen, or rather a relaxed stroll at its feet? The one thing not to miss: the views across the Rhine Valley, Lake Constance and the Swiss mountains from the “KarrenKante”. Standing on the edge of this twelve metre transparent platform feels like floating in mid-air.
A thousand and one holy families — Mary, reclining with the baby Jesus held tenderly in her arms. Jesus, having been taken down from the cross, surrounded mournfully by his disciples. The scenes depicting the birth and life of Jesus are as varied as the approximately 120 crib depictions and nativity scenes from around the world. Fittingly, these are housed in a 150 year old former horse stable. The largest crib, a full-year crib with 14 stations showing the life of Jesus, is 23 metres long. An exhilarating tale — Dornbirn was an agricultural settlement. What remains of the 1,000 year history of our city is documented at the city’s Stadtmuseum. For example the economic boom in the 19th century, which made Dornbirn into the textiles centre of Vorarlberg. After the bankruptcy of the textile printing company F.M. Rhomberg In 1993, the textile sample archive was adopted as a testimony of textile history and is unique in Austria. In 1934 ten percent of Dornbirn’s inhabitants were still farmers, by 1996 this figure had fallen to 0.5 percent. The changes are shown graphically.

Where the froth foams over — Is there a perfect beer? How is it made? Where did the Mohren brewery get its name from? Answers to all these questions and more can be found at the museum of the Mohren brewery. Here Mohrenbräu imparts knowledge and tells stories all about beer and brewing, with the jewel in the crown being an historic brewing apparatus from the 19th century, which was still in use up to the year 1917. After your tour, why not visit the shop to buy some beer mustard, bock beer brandy or bitter-sweet beer pralines? Highly recommended is the experience of brewing your own beer in the creative brewery.

When your feet start to itch and say “Hey, I’m still here y’know!”, Dornbirn offers countless opportunities to put them to good use. Fancy something sporty? How about the K1 climbing walls. Or maybe something historical? The city’s Stadtmuseum provides a glimpse into the past, with various equally lovingly and professionally presented themes. A slice of nature, please, however without getting dirty? The inatura museum makes it possible to dive into the world of insects or explore the power of natural phenomena. Or maybe something beer-related, or ... ? The diversity knows (nearly) no bounds.

Nature from surprising perspectives — The inatura museum in Dornbirn is a natural history museum with a twist. Vorarlberg’s unique mountain landscape appears forged in steel, the descent of an avalanche can virtually be seen live. One can stand opposite a wolfpack and ruffle the fur of a bear. Experience and touch regional rivers, the depths of Lake Constance or even the inside of the human body. This museum is located within an old foundry, machinery and water turbine factory, the remnants of which radiate a brittle metallic charm. inatura
Art as commentary — The FLATZ museum is built around a gift of works to the city by the artist FLATZ himself, who was born in Dornbirn in 1952. FLATZ is known for his spectacular performance art and for his installation at the Documenta 1992. The museum sees itself as a forum for debate on artistic impulses and current positions. The museum not only draws visitors into the artistic world of its namesake, it also presents exhibitions of works of international artists. In addition it organises and presents readings, programmes of lectures, discussions and performances.
Indoor mountain climbing — During the taster course on offer you will be instructed on the basic techniques of climbing and be given basic knowledge of safety and the equipment used for indoor climbing. And afterwards you can talk to your course instructor about booking a beginner’s course to learn more about and perfect your climbing techniques. Children can also participate, if accompanied by an adult. And the sport of bouldering can be recommended for those who only have time for a smaller taste. The fall heights for unsecured climbers is moderate, the climbing routes range from simple to demanding. K1-Kletterhalle

THE ARCHITECTURAL DELECTABLES OF DORNBIRN TEXT Miriam Jaeneke PHOTOGRAPHY Benno Hagleitner
How often does one walk past them on the way to work, to town, to the cash point, on the way to meeting friends, without even giving them a second glance: the architectural delectables of the city, such as for example Dornbirn’s oldest house or a former power station that still fires up on command. Let alone having a read of the info board or taking a look inside. 6850 has done this for you and presents in the following an architectural selection.
Concentrated power in a tight space — In Forachstraße 43, on the lower floor, there is a sign on the door that reads “Entry is welcomed” – the old Sütterlin script already suggests that what we are about to see is a bit long in the tooth. The old power station, with living quarters above, which are still resided in to this day, was first constructed in 1901. In the machine room there is a constant, strong smell of oil; brought to life through the insertion of a Euro coin, the red and black painted technology rumbles and hums, sparking to life before your eyes. In 10,000 working hours, the Dornbirners Adolf Gstöhl and Walter Bröll have breathed new life into these technical treasures from the past and preserved these
for the public. The Francis double-turbine, constructed by the company Voit, was the first water turbine for the generation of electricity and was driven by the waters of the neighbouring Müllerbach stream. Peak output was 100 kW or 3,000 volts. After the bankruptcy of the company F.M. Rhomberg in the year 1993, the power station was initially closed. It was then bought by the city of Dornbirn in the year 1995 and operation recommenced in 1997 until 19th October 2004. It was then shut down once again for economic reasons and a new power station was constructed in a newly built facility. Schaukraftwerk Forach, Forachstraße 43

Quiet and noble — Beside a towering birch tree, the no less impressive narrow side of of the church of the Capuchin monastery rises majestically into the sky. Located at Marktstraße 49, the church has been fitted with wooden benches and modern windows. These are brushstroke blue with yellow and red stripes. Unpretentiously kept in white, the sacred space has a tranquil feel, and beside it is the equally sober looking monastery building. The monastery was built using funds provided by Adolf Rhomberg after the wife of the textiles manufacturer and Governor had recovered from a serious illness. The monastery was erected opposite his residence in 1893/94 and the monastery church is dedicated to Saint Joseph. Following the custom of the time, the altarpiece depicts important people of the period, including the married couple that provided funding for the monastery, and Dornbirn as the pictorial background. In 2004 the monastery was given to the Franciscan Province of Posen in Poland. Franciscan monastery, Marktstraße 49 34
Solemn and ornate — The cream-coloured villa located at Schulgasse 17 is one of the best examples of a Jugendstil villa in Vorarlberg. The façade of the building, with its ornate plasterwork decoration, is striking and the wooden veranda built onto the south side, also richly decorated, is equally as impressive. The house was constructed in 1904/05 by the Dornbirn-based architect Hanns Kornberger for the doctor Josef Lins. Today the house is home to the regional medical council. In 1862 fourteen doctors in the region came together to form the association “Vorarlberger Doctors”. Their intention was the furtherance of medical science and to represent the interests of the profession. Back then there were only 38 academic doctors in the whole of Vorarlberg. In 1894 the Medical Council of Vorarlberg came into being. The local national-socialist government dissolved this association and replaced it with the Medical Council for Tirol-Vorarlberg. After liberation in 1946 a provisional medical council was elected in Dornbirn. Villa Lins/medical council, Schulgasse 17

Public ornament— The building at Rosenstraße 6, which today houses the city’s music school, was originally constructed in 1900/01 as a finishing school for young ladies. The building is constructed of yellow and red brick. One remarkable feature is the original Jugendstil glazing to the stairwell. The window extends from the very bottom to the very top and frames the landscape outside: the sun throws its light from the right hand side over this picturesque image, with space aplenty for trees, fields, water and sky, with a frieze of flowers providing the crowning glory. The music school was founded in 1902 by the “Society of Music Friends”. After several changes of location, the music school has now been housed here in this building since 1927, where the elegant sounds of oboe, piano and singing voices can be heard throughout the day. Grandiose yet still true to style — The Adolf-Rhomberg-Haus can be found at Marktstraße 26, surrounded by mighty trees. In the entrance hall the vaulted ceiling and old parquet flooring stand out immediately. From the outside the entrance porch is flanked on each side by two columns, the underside of the roof has floral designs. In general the external façade is ornately decorated, the roof gable on the third floor is a feast for the eyes. The house was originally built in 1798 to 1799 under the instruction of textiles manufacturer Marx Alois Luger. The plans were drawn up by Sigmund Hilbe, who also designed the church in Haselstauden. In 1834 the house was purchased by Eduard Rhomberg, whose son Adolf was Governor of Vorarlberg from 1890 to 1918. In 1900 the architect Hanns Kornberger redesigned the façade and added the current Jugendstil details. The Guild of the Vorarlberger Building Industry purchased the building and renovated it in the years 1987 to 1990. The Kunstraum Dornbirn uses it for exhibitions and courses. Salmon-coloured and majestic — In Oberdorf, in the narrow, tranquil Zanzenberggasse 2, already quite high up on the mountain, sits a special house. With salmon-coloured render, the wooden shutters painted grey. Carved into the stone wooden lintel is the number 1788. However, the earliest mention of this building is from the mid-16th century: “Michel Hörigs house in Oberdorf by the spring”. The spring is still blubbering beside the house and forms an integral part of the rural idyll. The house was owned for many generations by the Ulmer family; the heads of this family held important positions in the parish. Today the arched entrance is used by the occupants of eight private apartments, who also have private use of the enchanting gardens, complete with stone lions and mature hydrangea bushes. One notable feature on the city-side of the house is the dominant and defiant timber-framed tower. Apartment house, Zanzenberggasse 2 36
Refined concrete — The first thing one notices when initially seeing the silver/grey façade of Achstraße 1 is the prominent windows, which jut out from the building. Framed in dark grey, these large glazed units are distributed asymmetrically along the building, both grabbing the attention and simultaneously allowing an insight into the current use of the building. Book shelves, tables, red beanbags for sitting on. In the library of the city’s University for Applied Sciences silence rules, or maybe a concentrated exchange of views in quiet mode. The parquet flooring is old, but in good condition. The building was renovated at the end of the 1990s, however kept true to the original. It was first constructed in 1958 and is a typical example of the optimistic architecture of the fifties, which built on the so-called “international style” with the adoption of formal elements. After the initial departure of the textiles school from the Achstraße area in 1981, the buildings, which were in the ownership of the state, stood empty. The city purchased the area in order to preserve the buildings. In addition to the use of some parts of the buildings by the Fachhochschule, it was also possible to locate two institutions in the area that concern themselves very much with design and composition: Kunstraum Dornbirn and the vai. Sacred with the smell of sweat — From the outside it looks a little like a church. The only irritating thing is the many – tidily – parked-up bicycles and scooters beside it. However, once inside the Gym on Schulgasse no. 38, the sacred countenance quickly disappears, to be replaced by the impression of a typical school gym. Rings hang from the ceiling, a floating balcony sits in the rounded far end of the hall, the floor is marked-up colourfully for all types of sport. However, the space is very open and transparent. The Gym was opened in 1876 as the first association gym hall in Vorarlberg by the Dornbirn Association of Gymnasts. This association was founded in 1862. The building was comprehensively renovated in 2012. This was also urgently necessary after the demolition of the equipment store annex and the partially desolate condition. Thanks to the financial support of the city of Dornbirn and the province of Vorarlberg, as well as the dedicated work provided by the Office for Historic Buildings, the building could be returned to its original historic appearance. Even the old paintings that were discovered under the plaster could be successfully restored. Gym, Schulgasse 38
Venerable with charm — The Schlossguggerhaus, the oldest house in Dornbirn is located at Sebastianstraße 24 and dates back to 1290. The ground-floor entrance is sealed by an old, robust door, the arched doorway more suited to a smaller person. The wooden external staircase does not look like it would bear the weight of a modern European. The neighbouring stables would have been built at a later date, as was often the case; the sign “Keep entrance clear” is an indication that there is still some life behind the stable door – and that it can still support life. On the Bergstraße side, on which today many cars and earlier the horse-drawn carriages would pass, many inviting windows look out. Behind the house there is an ancient apple tree in a green meadow, which will blossom and bear fruit for many years to come. The core of the building is built in late-Romanesque plank-work construction and therefore is a special example of anonymous rural construction in West Austria. Also notable is the increasing stone construction around the woodwork, which documents the historic development from wooden to stone-wood mix construction. Schlossguggerhaus, Sebastianstraße 24

When we eat something extraordinarily good, not only are we full but also very happy. When we use soap that has been manufactured according to strict ecological criteria, not only are we clean but we smell ethically virtuous. And when we get our shoes resoled by hand, it is not just our feet that feel great. The Dornbirn businesses and products that we present in the following are unique to our city. And they have a lot to offer: from hand-made shoes for individualists to grasshoppers for that surprise amuse-bouche at your next dinner party. Oyster beer instead of the usual wine with a luxury dinner or chorizo for those who like it not only refined but also spicy. Come on – what are you waiting for?

“Sport costs time and money and you have to be a member of a club or association”, say many. We say that this isn’t true: sport can also only take half an hour, muscle training can also cost nothing at all. And no one has to be a member of a club or association to power up. This also applies to guests of the city. There are many places to enjoy fresh air and nature. And the only price you will pay is leaving the couch for a while – only to settle back down onto it later, freshly showered and happily worn out.
6850 — LEISURE
Jogging. Beats any treadmill — Even if in the future a treadmill would be able to simulate the unevenness of the forest floor and the trees would accompany you left and right on the screen, it still would not be the same as getting out in the fresh, tangy air of the forest and flexing out the muscles – alone or with like-minded people. One optimal jogging route is from the Enz along the river down to Furt and back up along the other side. Dornbirn’s river Ach gurgles and whooshes along and always shows another face, in summer it is lined by sun worshippers and swimmers. The longer running route is 6 kilometres, the shorter 3.41. In the Achauen park there is also an outdoor 400-meter wood-chip running trail – for all those that prefer even ground, however not indoors on the treadmill.
Swimming. Enjoy weightlessness — Swimming is not simply swimming. There is front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, synchronised swimming. OK, there is also the classic head above water, and the breaststroke is supposedly best for the spine, with breathing first to the left, then to the right. But one doesn’t simply go to the Waldbad Enz forest baths in summer or to the city baths in summer or winter for the health benefits. Rather one goes to chat with friends or so that the kids can have fun. In summer to feel the sun on the skin, the grass under foot and the cool ice cream on the tongue. In winter to occupy the unused loungers for a few hours and with float between the legs and swimming goggles firmly on to improve your crawl technique. There is always something to do.
Squash. Quicker than the ball — Those who have tried the game of squash once will very probably be hooked for life. This high-tempo racket sport requires a generous portion of stamina and energy. Squash can be played in singles with two players or in doubles with four players on the squash court. The ball must touch the front wall of the court on every strike, either directly or indirectly of another wall. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that your opponent can no longer reach it before it hits the ground for a second time. Squash can be played at the fitness centre Magic Fit in Bildgasse.
Fitness court. Gym equipment outdoors — Which one of us has never wished for a fitness studio in the fresh air? In Dornbirn’s Furt district this wish has come true. The open-air gym equipment can either be used in conjunction with the running track or used on its own, and there is also the wood-chip running trail in the Achauen park. Tree stumps can be used for balancing, equilibrium or jumping exercises and there’s a staircase that can be used for example for up and down sprints. There is also gymnastics-based equipment for improving strength, agility and coordination.

Calisthenics. Own movements, own muscles — The first callisthenics park has been opened in Dornbirn on the grounds of the Birkenwiese sports complex by the river-side entrance. Calisthenics is creative training using nothing more than one’s own body weight. This trend sport comes from the ghettos of the United States and aims to make health accessible to everyone. Beginning with knee bends, push-ups and chin-ups, the more advanced graduate to more impressive poses. The exercises using the various pieces of equipment at the Birkenwiese simultaneously challenge multiple muscle groups, improving coordination, training the heart and circulatory system and building strength above all in the body’s core. World championships have already been held for many years in Riga. The target can never be set high enough!
Skiing. The world on two planks — Recommendation: park in the city’s parking garage and then travel by bus (number 38) up to the Bödele. When purchasing a ski pass you will also receive free-of-charge an exit coupon for the car park. Skiers both big and small love this area of natural snow and the charm of the nostalgic ski huts. The Bödele is a family ski area that is perfectly suited for children and beginners, however that also has something to offer for more advanced skiers. It is not as busy as other resorts and the prices are comparatively moderate. And not least: the views are amongst the best offered by any skiing resort in Vorarlberg. As a special treat for the kids, a snowman course, dedicated to the Bödele’s mascot has been added. Rotating figures, ski boxing and ski high-fives are all featured, and there are also skiable obstacles.
Tobogganing. Winter enjoyment without barriers — The two kilometre-long toboggan run is located at the foot of the Bödele. Parking is virtually below the Ammenegg. From here cross diagonally a large meadow and the artificial toboggan run of the Gütle tobogganing club. The actual run starts by a road barrier. It is a sunken run that leads through a forested area. This ends at 1,100 metres by the Bödelesee lake. In order to reach the run from the Bödele, go left past the Berghof Fetz until you reach a chapel. Once there turn right and follow the path for approximately five to ten minutes until you reach the top of the toboggan run. When exiting the run at the bottom there are often other tobogganists coming down – so take care. This also applies on the run itself: the bottom section is really curvy and in parts also steep. With poor snow conditions care should also be taken with the trees that line the run.
Mountain biking. Sport with a view — Those who appreciate the grandiose vistas in the countryside surrounding Dornbirn and enjoy the speed, exertion and exhilaration of mountain biking have almost innumerable options. For example, the route from the heritage-protected Dorfplatz in Schwarzenberg up to the Lustenauer Hütte via Brand, Geroldsegg, Unterkaltberg and Klausberg and on to the Älpele, with the final destination of Passhöhe Bödele. The route incorporates changes in elevation of 650 meters, is approximately 15 kilometres long and is possible to complete in one and three-quarter hours. Ambitious riders can also add an extension over the Geißkopf. Alternatively, from Dornbirn a halfday tour leads through the Kobelache gorge to a viewing point. The Weißenfluh Alp is a well-known meeting point for both hikers and mountain bikers and can be used as a rest point before tackling the varied descent via Kehlegg to complete the 25 kilometre long tour.

Cycling. Nature left and right — A pretty route through Dornbirn by bicycle, which can be extended as you wish, is through the Ried. From the city centre head initially along the Dornbirner Ach river, then through the Auwald. Here you may meet not only hikers, dog walkers or other cyclists, but also horse riders. The moorland Ried follows, where the landscape opens up and various paths lead along the grassland meadows for example in the direction of Lustenau. Along the way there are several opportunities to stop and take a break: the rock formations by the Ach for starters, then on the right the café Obstgut Steirer (fruit farm)with its delicious snack menu or maybe the Möcklebur, a converted farmstead, where good food is also on offer.
Ice skating. Glide like a prince and princess — Ice skating enthusiasts can have their fun in the architecturally interesting multi-purpose hall at the trade fair centre. The hall is set up as an ice skating rink from October until mid-March, however this is primarily used for ice sports and for large events. There are therefore times when the rink is not open to the general public – so it is worth checking before sharpening your skates.

I
Ristorante Pizzeria Etna — Carbs are always the answer, no matter the question, and Etna has all of the answers. This bustling Italian restaurant has an extensive pizza and pasta menu, but it is definitely not a case of quantity over quality here. The pizza bases are crisp, the toppings are ample, and they are finished off with just the right amount of cheese. The pasta is cooked beautifully, accompanied with fresh and flavoursome ingredients and sauces, and the seasonal monthly recommendations are
always worth a try. The seafood offerings should not to be overlooked either, so make sure you take a peek in their fish cabinet to check out the fresh catches of the day. Then I hope you have a little room still left over, as it would be a crime to go home without tasting a bit of the homemade tiramisu. However, be warned, the portion is generous and so sharing is most definitely caring. Schulgasse 36, T + 43 5572 203144, facebook.com/ristorantepizzeriaetna

Ammenegger Stuba — This quirky tavern perched high above the city is full of character. The walls are adorned with funny slogans that are sure to put a smile on your face. But if they don’t, the menu certainly will. The huge wooden menu is bound together by hinges that actually creak when you open it. It is like something out of Harry Potter and the dishes within are just as magical. The food is cooked personally by the boss and he ensures that you get to enjoy high quality, delicious, heartwarming classics with a few unique twists. They also have a dessert menu to rival all other dessert menus, so make sure you leave room.
BBQ Longhorn Smokehouse — Good things come to those who wait, and at Longhorn they slow cook the meat for up to 18 hours to bring you the most mouthwatering and flavoursome meat possible. This nod to an all-American bar in the heart of Dornbirn is all about the southern BBQ, specialising in succulent meat, which is smothered in a delectable smoky sauce, and served with a range of naughty side dishes. Think pulled pork or sticky ribs; where if the sauce doesn’t end up all over your face, then you’re just not eating them right. Or tuck into one of the juicy burgers, with a side of fries and don’t forget the onion rings. The diet starts tomorrow … right?

Cuma Grill — Hearty and healthy are not normally words associated with a kebab shop, but Cuma Grill breaks all of the stereotypes and serves up delicious, fresh Turkish cuisine that can be enjoyed at any time of day. They source the ingredients locally and all of the sauces are made with fresh herbs. Sink your teeth into their homemade döner kebabs, made with freshly prepared meat, or why not nibble on some lamb chops straight off the grill. I dare you to resist the smell of the pides straight out of the stone oven, baked with homemade flatbreads. Are you vegetarian? No problem. This really is a Turkish delight for everyone.
Gabriel’s Cucina — It’s tucked away in one of the quiet alleyways in the centre of town, but this restaurant is not one to fade into the background and once you have visited you will not forget it. It is vibrant, welcoming and a real hidden gem. Gabriel Venturiello’s invites you to enjoy Mediterranean cuisine at its very best, utilising the finest ingredients from his home region in Italy. In the relaxed courtyard or cosy restaurant, enjoy dishes such as saddle of lamb in a cocoa-chilli crust, mussels with chorizo and hazelnut panna cotta. Come for the food, stay for the hospitability and above all enjoy the experience.

Gasthaus Bad Kehlegg — This guesthouse is tucked away in the woods in Kehlegg and is a haven for hikers and mountain bikers alike. It has an easy going, no frills, homely feel, with large communal tables and friendly service. However, this well-loved local has a surprise or two up its sleeve, or to be more specific, in its menu. When you peek inside you will notice the distinct Asian influence with dishes such as sweet and sour chicken, duck curry and fried rice. They will still give your mum a good run for her money though, with good old favourites like schnitzel, käsespätzle and cordon bleu.
Gasthaus Bierlokal — Within the warm embrace of the town centre, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the beer garden, the social vibe of the beer hall, or the safe haven of the quiet restaurant. This lunchtime and after work favourite is not just for beer lovers and you’ll find more than just bratwurst on this menu. Perhaps start with caramelised goats cheese with wasabi mousse, then try one of “Grandma’s favourites”, like the Vorarlberg speciality braised veal cheeks in a red wine sauce or maybe the smoked salmon and spinach lasagna is more up your street. The inventive and tasty menu will not fail to delight and surprise you on each visit.

Gasthof Dreiländerblick —There is just something special about sitting on top of a mountain, taking in the views and eating good food. The views here are simply spectacular as you look out onto three countries (hence the name), and all the way to Bodensee on a clear day. If you can draw your eyes away from the view, you can feast them on the menu. They keep it mainly traditional (käsespätzle, schnitzel, zander), utilising as many local suppliers as possible. And how does finishing the evening off with their famous raspberry roulade sound, whilst the sun sets over the lake? Not bad eh?
Gasthaus Gemsle — Guesthouses are in no short supply here, however Gemsle’ offers you the complete Vorarlberg experience from the food to the hospitality, all served up in a beautiful traditional setting. The menu is inspired by the motto “traditional- original” and so do not get too comfortable as there are a few delightful surprises in store for your taste buds. They take great pride is serving up the best local and seasonal ingredients. Enjoy smoked duck with lentil salad, or instead of apple strudel why not try a savoury strudel, and you simply can’t go wrong with a good old pork roast, delicious anytime of year.

Gasthaus Schiffle — From the outside it appears to be just another humble guest-house, but don’t let appearances fool you. The food here is absolutely terrific in both taste and appearance, where farmhouse charm meets five-star finesse. This 130-year-old guest-house in Mühlebach is welcoming and cosy and has the feels of Sunday dinner with the family, if your Mum cooked as well as Jamie Oliver. Good, hearty classic dishes are given modern twists like beef in cognac sauce, served with pine nut dumplings or fresh fish with lemon infused pasta. If you find the choice too much to bear (I completely understand), simply let the chef treat you to a surprise menu.
Gasthof Gütle — Away from the hustle and bustle, set within beautiful, peaceful surroundings, Gütle lets you be at one with Vorarlberg’s stunning landscape and culinary offerings. Its position at the foot of the Rappenloch walk makes it ideal to work up an appetite before tucking into some delicious regional dishes. When the weather is good, grab a seat outside with the mountains looming up either side of you or snuggle up in one of the many dining rooms. From traditional to modern, this guest-house caters for every taste, in terms of both the décor and menu. The quality of the meat is exceptional, and the homemade schupfnudeln make the perfect accompaniment.

Innauer — This trendy hot spot has all your evening activities taken care of under the one roof. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the bar, then dine in style in the restaurant, before partying until late downstairs in the club. Even if you don’t want to party like it’s your birthday the restaurant is a must visit. At the back of the bar, peeking through the curtains, you will catch a glimpse of the sleek dining area. Dishes are a combination of traditional favourites and internationally inspired fusion. The commonality is that everything is seasonal and prepared with great care and attention. Both the food and the ambience will set you up for a fantastic evening.
Pasta Fresca da Giovanni — Hidden above an ice cream parlour, you could be forgiven for not realising Pasta Fresca was there, but you cannot be forgiven if you do not immediately visit and fall in love with the amazing homemade pasta. It will take your senses straight to the streets of Rome, whilst you look out over the streets of Dornbirn. Chef Giovanni comes from the south of Italy and has learnt the art of pasta making from his mother. This passion is clearly evident, as incredibly fresh, fine and seasonal ingredients are turned into beautiful and satisfying plates of food. From classics like spaghetti bolognese to gourmet choices like tagliatelle with truffle and porcini mushrooms you won’t want the plate to finish.

Restaurant Firstblick — One look is sometimes all it takes, and the view across the “First” mountains as well as a glance at the menu, will ensure that this family run delight turns into a regular favourite. The winter garden, with its huge windows will make you feel like you are actually sitting in the mountains themselves. With pops of bright green everywhere, even on a cloudy day it has a really vibrant feel. The robust menu will require more than one quick glance. It has a whole page dedicated just to fish, as well as offering all of your favourites, from hearty meat to tasty vegetarian dishes. Each dish is beautifully presented and really does taste as good as it looks.
Shao Kao Grill and Wine — This bold and modern restaurant takes its name from the mobile barbeque kitchens that adorn the street food scene in China. Using the same concept, they prepare high quality meats (sourced from around the world), and freshly caught fish on an open flame grill in order to retain the natural flavour yet adding a beautiful earthy taste. They throw a hint of rustic Italian charm into the menu for good measure, resulting in dishes such as homemade pasta with salmon in a garlic and ginger butter. Or perhaps grab some friends and share some Jiaozi, a variety of Chinese tapas, or some freshly made sushi and sashimi.

Stuonobach —Located in a beautifully restored old factory building you will easily be enticed by its charm and you haven’t even tasted the food yet. The menu is as full of character as the building and delivers consistently amazing food. What is not to love? Throughout the year they also host a variety of events such as wine tastings and jazz nights, so you have plenty of excuses to visit time and time again.
Vorarlberger Hof — The “Hof” won’t run along the beach in slow motion for you, but it will serve you up good no nonsense meals. The schnitzels are definitely the goto dish, best enjoyed with a nice cold drink and lots of friends, in this relaxed and easy local. The weekly lunch menu offers up a variety of no less than eight dishes to choose from, meaning you can visit every single day and still not eat the same thing twice. Thai cuisine at the Tivoli — It doesn’t hurt to ask. This also applies when in Dornbirn’s oldest cellar bar, the Tivoli. And when you ask you will receive some of the finest Thai food. Including the best Thai kebab in town. The Thai version of the kebab is extra spicy and exotically seasoned. If you prefer something more traditional, the
chicken kebab or vegi-baguette are also very popular. Whatever you choose from the menu, no one goes home from here hungry (or thirsty for that matter). Riedgasse 8, T +43 5572 24172, tivolikellerbar.at

FOR GOURMETS Sardines at the Bar10Zimmer — Those checking into one of the 10 rooms of the small Bar10Zimmer city hotel or entering the bar of this restaurant will notice immediately: here one can expect something special. Only fresh ingredients from Dornbirn’s weekly market find their way into the pan and arrive served up on the plates as wonderful culinary treats. Our secret tip sounds simple, however is unbelievably good: head chef and hotel owner Jodok Dietrich spoils his guests with his combination of sardines and home-made wholegrain mustard. Marktstraße 73, T +43 5572 890999, bar10zimmer.at
“Wurstnudeln” on Monday at the Rätschkachel — The “Rätschkachl” is located in an old traditional Rhine Valley house in Dornbirn’s Oberdorf district and is equally popular with night owls as well as with gourmets. The restaurant has a simple, however excellent menu. In addition to fillet of beef and corn-fed chicken breast, the classic “Wurstnudeln” (sliced sausage with noodles) are not to be underestimated. But be careful, they are not always available! It is best to go on a Monday after work, order the “ghörigs Wurstnudelpfännele” and then retire to the bar for something to wash it down with.

“A Ghörigs“ at 7er Bar — The 7er Bar offers a huge variety of drinks and if you listen to the regulars ordering you may notice the frequent request for “a Ghörigs, bitte” [“A proper one, please” ]. What is then a “Ghörigs”? Well, it is really quite a simple drink: lemon soda with vodka. If you want the lemon soda without alcohol, at the 7er you can order a “Grusigs”, which simply means “ghastly, disgusting”. They don’t only have a great drinks menu at the 7er Bar, they also have a great sense of humour. Eisengasse 7, T +43 650 8422027, 7er-bar.at

FOR DISCOVERERS Views over Dornbirn — For those wishing to discover Dornbirn from a different perspective, we recommend the ascent up to Watzenegg (also easily reachable with the number 38 bus). From there just a little bit further is Palmern, from where it is not all that much further to the Alpe Schwende – where a stop-over is definitely worthwhile. However, before doing so please take a moment to turn round and enjoy the wonderful panoramic views of Dornbirn.
62
Waterfall at Kobl — For canyoning fans the Kobel Ache river is a hotspot, however the waterfall is also our tip for the “dry” visiting variant. Over the last one thousand years the waters of this Ache have evolved into a river with wild rapids and steep gradients. The monumental canyon carries a great deal of water and is accordingly a fantastic natural spectacle. How does one get there? From the bus stop “Niedere” turn left and walk uphill to the Kobel Ache river and the Amann Bridge; you will see the waterfall directly in front of you.
The pothole “Kirchle” — Rappenloch Gorge is a treasured excursion destination for both the city’s residents and tourists alike. However, only very few visitors continue their tour beyond the Staufensee and further up into the Alploch and from there to the “Kirchle” [lit. small Church]. This is a great shame, because this natural stone monument is simply amazing and also provides an excellent photo opportunity. This post-ice age pothole is under a nature protection order and owes its cathedral-like character to a wall collapse. The huge rock wall narrowing towards the top reminds you of a church arch.

FOR ART LOVERS The painted ceiling in St. Martin’s Church — The Parish Church of St. Martin is the jewel in the crown of Dornbirn’s marketplace and conceals in its interior a very special fresco painted by the Dornbirn artist Johann Kaspar Rick. The so-called “Chorfresken” [choir frescoes] were painted by this talented artist in the year 1849. Those entering the church today will be fascinated by the sight of the ceiling fresco, which he christened “Adoration by kings and shepherds”.
The statue of Dr. Waibel — Dornbirn’s long-serving mayor Dr. Johann Georg Waibel was, in addition to this role, also a politician and medical practitioner. This highly regarded member of the Vorarlberg Landtag [regional parliament] was named in 1894 as an honorary citizen of Dornbirn. A statue was subsequently erected outside the town hall, in which he can be seen posing proudly and watching over his home town.

Water bucket at the Hotel Martinspark — The Hotel Martinspark is not only a hotel with extraordinary architecture, it also integrates contemporary art, making it well worth a visit. Temporary artworks are equally as wondrous as the permanent installations. For example the water installation in the entrance area of the hotel. The over-dimensional, pink water bucket is not to be overlooked and the droplets of water bring a very special tranquillity to the lively hotel foyer. PRIVATE BANKING MADE IN VORARLBERG Peter Fitz, Private Banking Consultant at the Hypo Vorarlberg in Dornbirn gives an insight into his investment activities with wealthy customers.
64
Private banking sounds very auspicious. What does this term mean exactly? Private banking is basically the financial services that banks offer to their wealthy private customers. From a particular level of wealth, not only the investment requirements but also the investment opportunities change. For example, we offer asset management services starting from a minimum volume of 50,000 Euros in order to guarantee the required diversification of risk and the best possible portfolio optimisation. Are your customers looking primarily for high levels of returns? A good performance is important. No question about it. However, equally as important is the personal contact with the customer and the fundamental values, such as competence, transparency and high quality of service. Moreover, it is also important that the successful investment strategies are always oriented around the individual requirements of the customers. In order to be able to develop the best solutions, an orderly portion of empathy, sensitivity and experience is required. Which services are most frequently requested by your customers? In particular investors ask strongly about the innovative asset management strategies in our in-house asset management. Our experts offer the individual op-
timisation of customer portfolios for private persons and for large investors. For the customer this means the prompt adjustment of asset classes for his investment targets and to the market environment. A variety of asset classes provides for flexibility in the investment and the risk-optimised attainment of the targeted returns. Is the offer of the Hypo Vorarlberg comparable to that of the traditional private banking houses of the large Swiss banks? Certainly. I would even go so far as to say that we combine the best of both worlds. The proximity to our customers and intimacy of a classic private bank and the research and investment opportunities of a large bank. And don’t forget that we speak the language of our customers and not only understand the Vorarlberger mentality, we also live it. KLAPPE 2
Klappe 2 — The Klappe is nothing less than an institution in Dornbirn. Located directly on the marketplace, one can watch the whole world pass by on those warm summer evenings. And when it turns colder, Klappe entices you inside with “strong drinks” and live music. With walls adorned by the likes of Sinatra and Elvis, it is easy to nestle up in this cosy, intimate bar until closing time.
7er Bar — There’s punk, rock and metal to be heard at Eisengasse 7. For dry throats the 7er Bar is the place to be: the huge selection of beers is almost unequalled. The drinks menu also contains – fittingly to the music – hard drinks. Every month there are changing DJs and live music. The bar in Eisengasse: never matched and never boring.
Anziehbar — This club has genuine appeal. It is notorious not only because of its “laBoum” club nights, when the place is always heaving. Students, tourists, locals and those who accidentally stumble across it all meet here to indulge in the great sounds and to party through until daybreak. Marktstraße 5

DISCOVER THE MOHREN BREWERY EXPERIENCE The opening of the new Mohren Brewery Experience Museum has added further flavour to the visitor experience at the traditional Dornbirn brewery by really bringing the story of this renowned local beer to life.

The Mohren Biererlebniswelt gives people the chance to learn all about the history and products of this Vorarlberg institution, with individual elements brought together to provide a truly holistic beer experience. Make your own beer in the Creative Brewery, find inspiration from the range of ales in the shop (Mohren Lädele), celebrate special occasions in the historical cellar (Braukeller) or even enjoy a pleasant meeting in one of the Mohren seminar rooms. The brewery experience is completed by a walk around the museum, which enables visitors to immerse themselves in the world of beer. Experience a rich beer heritage in the new museum — The new museum provides an impressive overall experience by blending the long history of the brewery, the various different elements of the traditional company and interesting information about beer from all around the world. Opened in October 2016 and covering four floors and 700 square metres, the interactive and multimedia exhibition offer a fascinating insight into beer produc-
tion through the ages – including everything from raw materials to the tasty end product. The centrepiece of the Mohren Brewery Experience Museum is the historic brewing installation that dates back to the 19th century. Managing Director Heinz Huber acquired this equipment in 1989 and has had it painstakingly restored for the exhibition. A collector’s passion — Thanks largely to the passion of Heinz Huber, the oldest brewery in Vorarlberg boasts a collection of more than 10,000 objects, ranging from beer bottles to antique brewing devices. A number of the items are now on display in the museum. EVERYTHING FOR THE ART TEXT Annette Raschner PHOTOGRAPHY Lukas Hämmerle
BELINDA BOCH-PRANTL AND JOHANNES BOCH Belinda Boch-Prantl — born in 1970 in Bregenz. Diploma in modern art history (Christie’s) in London. As of 1994: head of gallery together with her husband Johannes Boch. The gallery has moved twice; from Zollgasse to Widagasse and in 2007 to Marktstraße. End of the 1990s: renaming the gallery to Galerie c.art, Prantl & Boch. Johannes Boch — born in 1966 in Bregenz. Studied as a dental technician. 1992: return from Vienna to Dornbirn. 1994: change of jobs – beginning of the gallery and of the mastery of fly-fishing. You met one another in the cult club “Scala” shortly before it closed. Was it love at first or second sight? Belinda: For me it was very quickly clear that I wanted him in my life. I also introduced Johannes to my parents after just two weeks. Back then I told my mother that he was the one that I would marry. Johannes: Yes, it was love at first sight. When I had to go back to work in Vienna, I told my housemate that I had found the girl that I wanted to marry. To be in a relationship, to live together and to work together. How can that function so well? Belinda: No idea! I don’t know it any differently from my childhood. My parents have been married for more than 50 years and have always worked together. With myself and Johannes it has always been that way and it just works. Johannes: I don’t know if there is a patented recipe
for it. We both have the same taste in art, the same ideas about the bringing up of children and we both absolutely adore dogs, the fundamental framework of a good relationship has always been there. Is there an artistic event that has permanently influenced you? Belinda: For me as a child it was nothing unusual to meet artists personally. Many of these meetings influenced me permanently. When as a 17 year-old you have the chance to drink tea with Henry Moore, that is of course very cool. Conversations with Gottfried Honegger, who lived to be nearly 100 years old, I look upon even today as an absolute enrichment. Johannes: The exhibition “Les Dames de la Côte” by the group of artists “La Station” had a big influence on me. We exhibited twelve artists in three different locations. Back then, we use the old assembly hall of the defunct Rüsch factory as a venue – the place houses the Kunstraum Dornbirn today – and presented large works and installations by these artists. To Johannes: Can you tell me about the art of fly-fishing? One attempts to lure a sighted fish into biting using an imitation fly, however that must not necessarily be the objective. I mainly enjoy the nature around me. I prefer to go fly-fishing alone, that’s when I can best switch off and relax. I can then concentrate on the important things … (laughs). “Concentration on the important things” is the name of a fantastic work by the artist duo Bildstein & Glatz.

ERHARD WITZEL Key events — Born in 1949 in Bad Rilchingen/Saarland; studied business economics and management in Saarbrücken. Until 1986 employed as a member of the management of the Allen Group Int. Inc., New York and Frankfurt. 1981 to 2015 gallerist in Wiesbaden and Munich (five years in parallel with management job). 2008 until today runs QuadrART Dornbirn together with his wife, the artist Uta Belina Waeger; private art gallery with the two exhibition formats “Ansichten” [“Perspectives”] and “Dialog” [“Dialogue”]. Also co-founder of Art Bodensee. How would you describe your “two lives”? Both were very exciting. I wouldn’t want to miss a single second of these two lives, however when I look back on it today I am very glad that I managed to get away from the rat race of business management by the end of my 30s. How could a third life look like ? I already have a third life with our non-commercial exhibition gallery “QuadrArt Dornbirn”. In addition I am busy working on many ideas “in, with and for art”. For example, in the spring I will be curating in my role as president of the association “pro arte publica – art in the public realm” an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wiesbaden featuring works by Joseph Beuys, Eric Kressnig and Wolf Spemann. Together with your wife, the artist Uta Belina Waeger, what has been your greatest success with “QuadrArt” and
what concepts do you have planned for the future? Over the nearly ten years we have achieved a format with our exhibition concept “Ansichten” [Perspectives] that is unique across the state. The wonderful cooperation with the vorarlberg museum in Bregenz should not be left unmentioned. Once a year we present a selected juxtaposition of works from the contemporary art collection of the vorarlberg museum and from my collection at our gallery. As a Saarlander by birth, what is your experience of Dornbirn? Saarland and the state of Vorarlberg have much in common. Everyone knows virtually everyone else, which has no end of advantages, however this also conceals certain risks. From a cultural perspective Dornbirn offers very high quality and a huge variety and is far superior to the Saarland, or Saarbrücken if I wish to compare the two cities. In summary: life is extremely good here in Dornbirn. If a little expensive. Is there a cultural event that has influenced you in a special way? Yes. My first in-depth meeting with Joseph Beuys in 1977 at the Documenta 6 in Kassel, where he presented his installation “Honey pump” This first meeting led to a wonderful collaboration and friendship. By the way, from November 1985 to February 1986 I presented in my gallery in Wiesbaden the last exhibition authorised by him before his death. It was a full exhibition of his graphic works in a compressed, intensive form.

HEIKE KAUFMANN Key events — Born in 1976 in Wiener Neustadt. Graduated as Mag.phil in sociology/political science/history/ gender studies at the University of Vienna. From 1999 to 2018: commercial and artistic director of the poolbar festival in Feldkirch together with Herwig Bauer. Since 2005: jury member of the “New Austrian Sound of Music”, mica – Musik Information Center Austria. Since 2017: consultant, Federal Chancellery for Art and Culture, cultural initiatives. What memories do you associate most with the Spielboden Dornbirn? I can remember several superb concerts, new cultural discoveries, inspiring conversations and always entertaining evenings that I experienced here. Happy Days, so to speak. You have prophecised change, however no revolution. This implies no total change of direction. What will be different? The aim of the Spielboden is to provide a qualitatively superior cultural programme, colour and variety. It is important that one does not simply maintain the status quo and become stagnant, rather always keeps on the move, always asking questions, being curious and trying out new things. And of course every managing director has a specific signature, their own style. Mine is to build a strong team, to encourage a large portion of composure and confidence and to have a good nose and to have feelers out in all directions.
In the past you have helped, among other things, with the establishment of a youth arts and leisure centre in your birth town of Wiener Neustadt and got involved with the NGO “SOS Mitmensch“. In your opinion, which role can art and culture play in socio-political development processes? At the most general of levels the concept of culture includes everything that is not nature. Looking at it from this perspective, socio-political development processes without culture are not at all conceivable. But even if the terminology is more narrowly defined and a public art and culture scene is meant, one comes to a similar conclusion. Artistic and cultural activities broaden the room for manoeuvre, the scope for action, they awake the senses, build community spirit, provide resistance; they fulfil a great number of roles and provide an engine when it comes to processes of social change. Is there an artistic event that has permanently influenced you? I can of course still remember my first concert, my first musical, my first play. Subsequently it was rather the sum of the individual parts. What annoys or even angers you? In general I would describe myself as a very tranquil and calm person and there are not many things that upset me. To this extent these traits do not really fit with my disposition. The most likely thing to arouse such feelings in me is when someone is treated unfairly or unjustly in some way.

EKKEHARD BECHTOLD Key events — Born in 1954; studied law in Innsbruck, graduated with a Doctorate in 1979. Since 1984 self-employed lawyer with permanent chambers in Dornbirn, for more than 30 years located in the “Lugerhaus” above Café Steinhauser. In addition to his activities as a lawyer, has been a member of the Committee of the Chamber of Lawyers – Vorarlberg for 25 years and President of the Kunstraum Dornbirn for around ten years. His grandfather was Albert Bechtold, Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1934 to 1939 (forced into retirement by the National Socialists for being a modern artist). Which people in human history would you like to spend an evening with? Emperor Franz Josef I (perhaps it would be possible to talk him out of starting the First World War). Jesus (just to see what he was really like). Donald Trump (simply to be able to insult him properly). My grandfather, Professor Albert Bechtold, in his time as university professor in Vienna before the Second World War, because I personally only knew him after he had had his stroke and was disabled. Cleopatra (just to get to know her). Which personal abilities/talents are of benefit to you as a lawyer? I am too lazy for time-consuming and stren-
uous leisure activities, thus I have always had plenty of time for work. What memories do you have of your grandfather, the sculptor Professor Albert Bechtold? Childhood memories: a large house full of secrets, art and books and lying on a day bed, my grandfather paralysed on one side from a stroke – awe-inspiring. What are your favourite holiday destinations? Italy (anywhere), major European cities, southeast Asia. What are the strengths of Dornbirn and what is (still) missing in Dornbirn? The strengths of Dornbirn are its inhabitants, who are always willing – much more so than in any other region in the country – to experiment and try something new and also to overcome disadvantages or obstacles in order to do so; there is a fundamental positive attitude to things and their development. There isn’t really anything missing; I certainly find the idea of a market hall utterly charming. And of course cultural institutions, such as the Kunstraum Dornbirn above all, could be massively furthered through increased donations, especially of a material kind. Is there a cultural event that has permanently influenced you? The totally failed attempts to persuade me as a child to learn to play the piano or the guitar.

ROLAND JÖRG Key events — Born in 1960 in Bregenz; studied Germanistics and history at the University of Innsbruck, diploma dissertation on Franz Michael Felder; after vocational experience in Bregenz, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Bludenz, since 2001 head of the cultural office of the city of Dornbirn; has been a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg/Intermedia for more than 20 years; sporadic literary publications and catalogue contributions. What was originally your dream job? I can remember when I was 15 years old I received an F, probably in Latin or mathematics, and I went home and told my parents that the grammar school was not for me and that I wanted to take an apprenticeship as a photographer. My parents convinced me to stay at school and give it another go. Which cultural event has influenced you the most? In 1978 I founded the literature magazine “die graugans”(Greygoose) with my colleague Roger Vorderegger and through this I had close contact to and formed friendships with the leading figures of the literature and art scenes in the region. Also the jazz concerts in Bregenz, in St. Gerold or Lustenau, featuring, among others, Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, influenced me greatly, as well as my work experience in my university days at the Innsbrucker Forum for modern art and the Galerie Krinzinger.
What is still to be done in Dornbirn not only, but also from a cultural perspective? One thing that would be desirable is the creation of open spaces for creative projects. And of course we mustn’t forget that the Kulturhaus [cultural center] – built in 1982 – is a Veteran venue, where we must consider new approaches in the years to come. Last but not least, I think that Dornbirn should be the location of an industrial museum, given the industrial history of our city. What has been your biggest professional disappointment? Here I would rather talk about what could be the biggest disappointment in the future. Namely if we fail in the next step in our application to become European City of Culture 2024, i.e. being named on the shortlist. There are also small disappointments that come along from time to time, however these can also be used as motivation. Where is the best place to meet in Dornbirn? One of my favourite places is the workshop that my wife Carmen Pfanner has set up in the old power station in Forachstraße. Otherwise you can find me sometimes watching FC Dornbirn, the Rothosen (red shorts football team) at their Birkenwiese stadium, or at the Spielboden, or you can meet up for lunch at one of the city’s fabulous inns, which all have delicious and varied menus.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT DORNBIRN TEXT Myrthe Liebschick
6850 — INSIGHT
01
Many surnames in Dornbirn initially originated from the names of their professions: Gerber [tanner], Hämmerle [small hammer], Maurer [mason], Schmied [blacksmith], Schmitter [reaper], Schneider [tailor], Zimmermann [carpenter] etc. In the year 1881 the Gasthaus Gütle entered the history books: Emperor Franz Josef I put into operation the first telephone connection in Austria-Hungary between the Gütle spinning mill and the trading counter at the company F.M. Hämmerle. Even today there is still a ‘Kaiserzimmer’ in this traditional inn. Ebnit formerly belonged to the imperial county of Hohenems and became a separate municipality in 1806, which was merged with the municipality of Dornbirn in 1932.
05 79
Dornbirn’s trade fair centre attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year with its diverse trade fair formats.
The redwoodtree in Gütle has a height of 41 metres and a diameter of 1.55 metres. It’s age has been estimated at approximately 90 years.
The two-screen movie house Cinema 2000 shows films in their original language with subtitles.
Dornbirn always has been one single municipality, but with very scattered settlement areas. In 1902 the four districts of Niederdorf (now Markt), Hatlerdorf, Oberdorf and Stiglingen (now Haselstauden) were officially incorporated as boroughs. In 1994 Rohrbach and Schoren became the fifth and sixth borough respectively.
A colourful bunch. People from 116 countries live here in Austria’s tenth largest city.
Back in the day Dornbirn’s mayors were elected directly on the marketplace – a huge spectacle – today the city’s farmers market is held here twice a week.
04 Since 2013 Dornbirn has been twinned with Dubuque in the United States. During the first wave of emigration, this city in Iowa was the first port of call for more than 200 Dornbirners.

GOING DIGITAL IN DORNBIRN TEXT Laura Waibel

Upon arriving at the railway station, my digital journey through Dornbirn begins. A screen in the main square shows me precisely where each bus is and when it will arrive to collect me. Whilst I am waiting, I download the app Fairtiq and yes – I get free wifi, provided at numerous hot-spots around the city. Fairtiq proudly boasts of being Austria’s most modern ticketing system for bus and rail. The constant search for change for the bus ticket has thus been brought to an end and I can now climb on board and check in with a simple swipe over the screen of my phone. And if I forget to check myself back out
when getting off at my destination, the app will remind me to do so and with a second swipe my journey ends. All of the bus and rail trips that I make on a single day are collected together and at the end of the day I receive a notification of the best possible price. Pay too much by mistake? No longer possible! Bus route no. 1 takes me directly to the city centre, where I meet friends for a digital mystery adventure tour through Dornbirn. The approximately two-hour tour with the name Operation Mindfall allows up to 50 players to participate simultaneously. All of the participants are secret agents and are attempting

to purify the supposedly polluted ground water using an antivirus. The game involves scanning 15 stops using iPads and modern augmented reality technology and finding a hidden agent bus. The surroundings of Dornbirn’s city centre merge with the digital world. This tour can be highly recommended. Those that do not have that much time to spare can also visit the Secret Room, within which you can play the “Real Life Adventure” game, which
requires skill, logic and ability of all game participants. Thrills, excitement and a lot of fun are guaranteed by both games. All that gaming and all that fun certainly builds an appetite. But where to go in an unfamiliar city? I grab my phone once again and visit todayguide.at. This browser-based app is an interactive travel guide for gastronomy, excursion destinations and events.
