You can use the contents page to find an activity or group that sounds interesting to you.

Introduction

The names, websites and phone numbers are correct as of July 2014. We know that things change so if you are reading this directory after this date and are having difficulty getting in touch, the details may have changed. If you find the contact details aren’t working, try contacting the building where the activity takes place and ask if they know if the group is still running. If you are nervous about going along, why not give them a call first to say hello. Groups are always keen to meet new members and will help you overcome your nerves, perhaps by meeting you at the door, or buddying you up with an existing member for your first few times. If you care for someone and find that this impacts on making time for yourself, you can contact Carers of West Lothian or Crossroads (page 29) to find out what support is available. Some groups will break for school holidays, so it’s best to try to call them first before going along to avoid disappointment. If you find there are barriers in your life that stop you taking part in social or community activities, you can call Silver Line Scotland on 0800 4 70 80 90 for support and advice.

Retirement can be a really exciting time full of new opportunities, more ‘me’ time and more time with family and friends. But for some men it can be a real shock to the system and a time where loneliness and isolation begin to develop. Being part of a local group or developing a hobby before retiring can make the transition from work to retirement easier. Having a good work/life balance with plenty of time for personal interests can help us feel better and make life more enjoyable. It also means that retirement can be a time to better enjoy these hobbies and interests. Between January and March 2014, Age Scotland worked with local organisations to ask local men aged 50-70 about their experiences of ageing and retirement.

Having to retire, although I had the choice, was a change to my routine. I was looking forward to it but it was a bigger blow than I expected - a big cultural change. I tried to keep the routine of getting up, doing chores, but then had lots of time. Now I go to watch junior football, play bowls 3 or 4 times a week and go for the free swimming at Xcite. I have a good social support circuit.” James, aged 66

Caring for my father was a very steep learning curve for me - you don’t know how difficult it is until you are in a caring role yourself. I consider myself still to be quite young, although I am a diabetic, but I manage this condition well and it doesn’t stop me doing what I want to do. I am very active and enjoy playing squash and going to the gym. I ‘m a member of my local film society.”

Catching up with things I wish I had done earlier or should have done years ago. I used to be absorbed in family. I have been re-connecting with my wife now the children are older.” Jon, aged 57

Initially I missed my working environment and it took some time to adjust, however I feel happier now and not so stressed. I play golf at least three times during the week and also play bridge socially on Mondays.” Bob, aged 67 Fill your days with memories so you can look back and they keep you going when your older.” David, 66

Craig, aged 52 Local men told us that being involved in activity focussed community groups made life more enjoyable, but that it was sometimes hard to know what was going on. This directory includes information about the range of activities these men told us they enjoy doing, from art to volunteering, from fishing to walking. The groups meet in towns and villages across the community and all of the groups included have given us information about their activities to give anyone interested in getting involved an idea of what to expect. They are all keen to welcome new members to join their group. This process has been made possible due to funding from Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland. The aim of the befriending service is to make a positive contribution to an older person’s quality of life, health and sense of well-being. Where possible the intention is to prevent the need for access care settings and to supporting clients to remain independent at home. The service is time limited and volunteers are matched with clients for a period of 6-9 months. During this time the volunteer will support the client to achieve independence and feel more connected to their local community. Clients are referred to the service through Health, Social Work and Housing professionals. Clients are identified as at risk because they are experiencing isolation and loneliness which may be a contributing factor to the decline in their general health and well-being. Venue will vary depending on the type of befriending required.

FILMS Bathgate Regal Film Society

Meet: Thursdays, 7.30pm-9.30pm

Contact Margaret Fairgrieve: 01506 426848 Email: fairgrieve423@btinternet.com

Established in 1999, their aim is to offer the local community a cheaper, friendlier alternative than a trip to the nearest multiplex, and to bring attention to smaller films, foreign cinema and classics. The society recently received a grant for a brand new, permanent cinema screen, over 20 feet in width, so the films now look better than ever before. The Regal has the heart and soul of an old picture house. The film society is proud to be able to bring back this tradition. The programme is diverse, and is entirely open to suggestions from members. They organise special matinees for both older and younger generations, as well as screenings of musicals to coincide with the Bathgate Music Festival. They continue to welcome new guests and members and hope to bring cinema to Bathgate for a very long time.

We’re looking for people with gardening knowledge and skills to share. Day volunteers join us on an ad-hoc basis mainly to help with specific seasonal tasks on the farm. This could range from mucking out the chickens to harvesting raspberries, to preparing a polytunnel for planting. You need not be a gardener, we also need delivery drivers, jam makers, kitchen hands, admin angels and lots of other jobs for those who have no green fingers.

The Green Gym helps you to get healthier, by providing a programme of regular outdoor activities, which also liven up your local surroundings. These activities could include pruning shrubs and trees, making paths, growing fruit and veg, planting wildflowers, creating flowerbeds or building seats.

If you would like to come and meet us, and get a cuppa and a tour of the farm, we would be delighted to welcome you.
