INDUSTRY UPDATE Since our first edition of the Industry Catalogue in July 2020, the publication has gone from strength-to-strength and is now a proven and important sourcing and buying tool for thousands of retailers, stylists, designers and corporate and hospitality buyers from across Australia. With the recent unfortunate cancellation of the 2021 AGHA Sydney Gift Fair due to COVID-19, this second edition of the Industry Catalogue has become more important than ever. Without question, 2020 will go down in history as a year of unforeseen and continually evolving challenges. Our industry has had to pivot and explore new opportunities, the Industry Catalogue is one of those opportunities. The Catalogue is distributed to more than 60,000 important industry buyers across Australia and is a very much in-demand reference tool for new products and trends at the best prices. In conjunction with the Online Supplier Showcase, which is linked to the Catalogue, retail buyers can now connect directly with wholesalers and get access to entire product catalogues and brochures.

In the absence of a Sydney Gift Fair, AGHA is partnering with Tradesquare to provide an e-commerce platform for our members, whereby retailers can buy directly and online from wholesalers. This platform will be linked to listings in the Industry Catalogue, making buying your new product ranges even easier. Watch out for this exciting new platform, coming soon…. The next opportunity for buyers and sellers to network face-to-face and source the most inspiring brands and products available in Australia is at the AGHA Melbourne Gift Fair, scheduled to be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on July 31 - August 4, 2021. Nine in ten Australians believe Australia should produce more products

locally

New consumer research from Roy Morgan has found that nine in ten (89%) Australians believe Australia should be producing more products locally following the COVID-19 pandemic. The research found that Australians key motivations to manufacture locally were to reduce Australia’s reliance on other countries (38%), create jobs (26%), support Australian business and industry (26%), a safeguard for vulnerable international supply chains (20%) and to strengthen Australia’s economy (16%).

“This research indicates that Australians are placing priority on manufacturing self-sufficiency and job creation along with a renewed appetite to address the imbalance between locally made and imported products, to ensure Australia’s long-term prosperity.

The many benefits of buying Australian Made have been brought into sharp focus recently, as Australians navigate and adapt to a dramatically changed way of living, said Mr Lazzaro. Not only do our local makers produce products made to some of the highest quality and safety standards in the world, but they also create economic activity and employment opportunities.

The preference for Australian-made products was already high before the pandemic with Roy Morgan research in January finding 88% of Australians were more likely to buy products made in Australia*. Since the pandemic, more than half of Australians (52%) say they now have an even higher preference for Australian-made products. Roy Morgan CEO, Michele Levine, said “The impact of COVID-19 on Australians is unprecedented in so many ways not least of which is our shopping behaviour. More Australians are now organising delivery of products; doing online research prior to making a purchase; shopping online, both in stores they would usually visit and different stores. And critically since COVID-19 Australians have an ever greater preference for Australian Made products.” The research found that since the start of the pandemic, 37% of Australians are conducting more research online prior to purchasing products. Data from Australian Made’s website supports this finding, with traffic more than doubling in April to June compared to the same period prior. The average session duration also increased by 29%, with more and more Australians looking for authentic Aussie products. Total audience growth across all Australian Made’s social channels was up 467%, with engagements almost tripling.

The renewed focus on buying Australian-made has also led to more Australians to check labelling, with 43% of Australians now more likely to look for country of origin labels on products. Mr Lazzaro said, “As Australia’s only registered country of origin certification trademark, the Australian Made logo is the true mark of Aussie authenticity. fit so that many pieces are suited for multioccasion wear and reduce textile wastage. “We choose to produce and offer a dependable and quality product instead. Australian wholesaler Men’s Republic was created to bring together a dynamic range of mens gift ideas beyond the traditional socks and cufflinks. The business offers four trendy and unique product categories including gifts, accessories, grooming and outdoor. Here, AGHA speaks with Men’s Republic founder Sheldon Mayer on his inspiration behind the business. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START AS A GIFTWARE WHOLESALER? “I have been in wholesale for over three decades supporting gift retailers across Australia. I founded Men’s Republic a little over 3 years ago after realising that there are so few gift options available for men. Sure, you could always rely on the perennial ties, socks and cufflinks, but not much else was on offer. So, I set out to create the brand Men’s Republic and source as well as develop ontrend, functional and highly saleable gifts for men that are beyond the traditional.” HOW DID YOU SELECT THE PRODUCT RANGE ON OFFER AT MEN’S REPUBLIC? “I quickly realised that there are four main categories for men’s giftware including gifts, accessories, grooming and outdoor. I then went about sourcing from various Chinese factories who specialise in these categories. It took a lot of work and many “death defying” China road trips, but I finally found the appropriate makers who will live up to my high quality and production standards.” Popular multifunction hammer and torch set

WHICH PRODUCTS ARE MOST POPULAR WITH CUSTOMERS? “Our grooming and tool set categories are our star attractions. For grooming, we offer a good cross section of products including a 4-piece set with a toiletry bag, down to a 3-piece beard and moustache kit. We also have a multifunction hammer and torch set which is very popular with customers looking for a different gift for their bloke. All of our products are very well priced in the marketplace.” WHY SHOULD RETAILERS CHOOSE TO STOCK MEN’S GIFTS? “Up until recently, men have been the forgotten part of the population when it comes to buying gifts. Sure, there are the predictable gifts that we all often end up choosing, but most of us are unsure of what to purchase. So, we set about creating the Men’s Republic brand to take away the guesswork and offer products that are on trend, functional and enticing. Lately, there has been a worldwide push to introduce modish and cool products for guys. So, we had to make sure that our products are saleable year-round for everyday special events such as birthdays, general gifts and corporate events, as well as for the typical Father’s Day and Christmas sales.” WHERE CAN RETAILERS FIND YOUR PRODUCTS TO PLACE AN ORDER? “Men’s Republic will be launching around 20 new and exciting products in late April just in time for the Father’s Day Sales. LAUNCHING A NEW CERAMIC RANGE IN MAY

Living Green Decor was conceived after founder and director Rena Mihalopoulos found herself unemployed in Victoria due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. Faced with having to make big career changes, Rena pivoted to launch her own business and create organically-inspired ceramic pieces that were beautiful, textural focal points for interiors. Ideal for cut floral arrangements or for growing plants in water, the earthy range of ceramic vases from Living Green Decor are handcrafted by skilled artisans. Each piece is designed to create tranquillity in the home or office and transport us back to the natural world.

In March 2020, I had two choices; give up or become really passionate about creating something new and exciting. I’ve always been an admirer of ‘Objets d’art’ and my great passion for plants made it a no-brainer. It was definitely a case of adversity is the mother of invention, Rena told AGHA. “My business partner and I launched the online retail store in August 2020, but soon realised that we’d have to start a wholesale platform if we wanted to succeed. When lockdown restrictions eased I hit the ground running,” she said. “Drawing on my sales background, I visited local nurseries, homewares stores and florists. To my delight, most of the retailers were really impressed with the originality of the collection and the quality of the vases.” Rena added that the quality of her brand was an important factor, as the vases had to make a statement whilst also being functional. Each vase is fully glazed internally, making them non-porous, yet still retaining an organic, textural, external finish.

“The vases are designed to be eye-catching as installations or to be used for cut foliage and floral displays. More importantly, they are ideal for hydroponically growing plant cuttings. I wanted the vases to be interactive so that people would be able to personalize them, creating living, breathing sculptures in their home or workspace,” Rena said. “The Pebble collection has been extremely popular along with the Mollusc vases and the Whorl vases. We supply informative flyers to our stockists that explain how the vases work hydroponically and I think this has really helped get the concept out to the public,” Rena said. Since its debut on the market last year, Living Green Decor has quickly expanded to include a range of natural soaps and body care products, fragranced essential oils, aromatic candles and timber gifts sourced from Tasmania’s rugged landscape. “We will be launching a new ceramic range in May 2021 and will be adding further ceramic pieces to the collection again in July 2021. My business partner and I also look forward to displaying our collection at the upcoming AGHA Melbourne Gift Fair this August.” Rena said.
