As the peak association representing the Gift and Homewares Industry in Australia, the Australian Gift & Homewares Association (AGHA) is a profitfor-purpose organisation dedicated to looking after the interests of our members and the industry.

The AGHA is the Industry Authority and was created to advance the interests of Members and to create the optimum commercial environment for wholesalers, retailers and other stakeholders in the Australian gift and homewares industry.

In today’s ever-changing environment it is critical that industries and organisations continually review, assess and evolve. In response to industry feedback, the AGHA Industry Catalogue has been expanded to support the entire Gift and Homewares Industry beyond the Gift Fair landscape. The AGHA proudly publishes the bi-annual Industry Catalogue as the premium industry guide.

Utilise this Industry Catalogue as your single sourcing reference to connect directly with hundreds of product wholesalers, importers and distributors. The sophisticated interactive design allows you to click straight through to the websites of the industry leading wholesalers and suppliers to commence your product search straight away. SPLOSH

Everything Splosh designs make for wonderful gifts or personal purchases. AGHA chat with Splosh about their history and wide range of unique, high-quality giftware such as candles, bamboo boards, warmies, mugs and much more.

The Splosh story dates back to 1999, when founders Michael and Kim Kendall started crafting handmade timber gifts and selling them at the local Sunday markets! They had the simple goal of creating fun and unique products that enhance the homes and lives of décor lovers. As the demand for their products started to grow, so did Splosh, with the business evolving into the leading designer, importer and wholesaler of giftware and homewares in Australia and New Zealand.

A family business at its core, Kim and Michael handed over the reins in 2018 to their daughter and present Managing Director, Laura Colman, who has continued to expand Splosh’s wholesale customer network globally, worked to diversify the company’s product offering and range development, launched thriving wholesale and retail ecommerce channels and firmly establish a strong market presence, both in-store and online.

How would you describe the styling of some of your ranges?

Launching three to four homewares ranges each year, Splosh has diverse products to complement any aesthetic, home, and personal style. We have carefully crafted ranges that can be inspired by a number of themes including greenery, coastal, classic, Australiana and everything in between! We pride ourselves on designing ranges based on what our customers want - with stockist feedback, customer demand, previous sales results, and market trends at the core of every innovative range we design.

Meet Elisa ELISA BARTELS | STAND AL1

Elisa’s career began with a Bachelor’s degree in visual art, with a major in ceramics. Her inspiration comes from the subverting perception that ceramics has in the broader community, and opening up a dialogue by producing works which are approachable, exciting, fun and sexy. Her work is now stocked in various retail stores in Sydney and a three Michelin Star restaurant in Paris.

Meet Nanzita NANZITA | STAND AL3

Nanzita always loves to make things that are simple and beautiful. Her love for colours, florals, nature and fashion are her inspiration in designing the baskets. Nanzita’ Le Panier bags are created and designed by Nanzita and are produced for all women who love to go out! The bags are fashionable, sustainably produced and can withstand rough usage.

Meet Tran GIFTFUL OF JOYS | STAND AL4

Tran Phung is the owner, designer, and maker at Giftful of Joys. She makes and designs quirky, fun and handmade wearable art accessories and giftware that are unique. After years in Engineering, Financial Planning, and Banking, Tran finally found her passion in creating candles, and then gradually grew into fashion accessories, lifestyle and home decor products.

Meet Alejandra KELKAY | STAND AL5

Born in Chile, Alejandra has always created things with her hands. After arriving in Melbourne and discovering language barriers would prevent her from continuing her career as a journalist, Alejandra turned to her other passion - jewellery design. Full of energy and colour, and inspired by her love of Frida Kahlo, Alejandra’s KELKAY collection includes bags, upcycled denim jackets and more.

Meet Vanessa COCOKANELA | STAND AL6

With a degree in Media and Communication, Vanessa Gatica’s passion for jewellery led her to adding silversmithing and 3D jewellery design to her skill portfolio. Vanessa is now CEO of CocoKanela Design, a bohemian-style jewellery brand inspired by her Mexican heritage, love of nature, and harnessing the healing properties of crystals and gemstones.

Meet Ceyda STUDIO BY CEYDA | STAND AL7

After completing a Fine Arts degree in her homeland of Turkey, Ceyda Oktem moved to Australia to pursue a Masters degree at RMIT. It was during this time that her own creative spark was reignited through her passion for candle making. Every candle Ceyda crafts is unique in its scent, shape, colour and texture. ‘I feel so happy when my customers engage with my candles with all their senses.’

Meet Pam PAMDESIGNED | STAND AL8

Born in Chile and arriving in Australia in 1996, Pamela is a jewellery designer and maker. Pamela painstakingly handcrafts intricate wire crochet jewellery using the Peruvian stitch technique, which she learned directly from its sculptor inventor, Juan Pacheco. Pamela’s jewellery is sold in stores in Chile, Sydney and Melbourne, and has been featured at Melbourne Fashion Week. She is passionate about her craft and loves to share her skills.

Meet Naz JEBELI | STAND AL9

Naz Jebeli fled Iran as a teenager in 2013. This traumatic experience was later triggered by the restrictions of Covid-19 lockdowns. ‘...I was inspired to launch my own small enterprise as part of my healing process.’ JEBELI is now a distinguished Sydney-based leather goods company whose forte lies in crafting bespoke, high-end products using only the finest materials and traditional methods.

Meet Macarena BONITA SHOP | STAND AL10

Macarena chose ‘Bonita’ for her business’s name as it’s Spanish for ‘beautiful’, a key word from her daily mantra during her cancer treatment - ‘you are beautiful yesterday, today, and tomorrow’. During her battle with cancer, her love for sewing resurfaced as a way to heal herself. ‘From turbans to headbands and bandanas, I love to create different styles of headwear for women to brighten their days and make them feel beautiful.’

THE SUSTAINABILITY shift

Naturally, (no pun intended) wholesalers and retailers are making the shift to producing and sourcing products that fulfil buyers’ desires. We highlight five of our many members who are already flying the flag for sustainability.

Red Parka produces a range of products made from recycled plastic bottles, socks made from sustainably grown bamboo and stationery made locally in Tasmania from recycled, FSC-certified stock. AGHA spoke with Jennifer, the founder and artist behind Ped Parka, about the company’s strong ethical values. “As a business, we have a policy of donating 50% of our profits to conservation and humanitarian causes.” Over the years, they have supported Oxfam Australia, The Fred Hollows Foundation and numerous wildlife sanctuaries in Tasmania, to name a few.

It’s unlikely that anyone will have missed the memo on sustainability, as the conversation has been going on for years, since the first World Climate Conference in 1979 and the UN Climate Change Conference in 1995.

The discussion, however, needs a keener look, as in recent years there has been a massive shift that will impact the retail sector.

Ernst & Young point out that the pandemic has been a catalyst for the change in consumers thinking and buying patterns. Data from EY Future Consumer Index1 shows that globally “over 44% of consumers suggest they want to buy more from organisations that benefit society, even if their products or services cost more.”2 They also determined that 30% are willing to pay a premium for more sustainable goods or services.

Farm Goat, exhibiting at Melbourne Gift Fair, also used the pandemic as a catalyst for producing their ethical and sustainable soap range. The milky aromatic soaps are handcrafted locally in Australia, using sustainable oils. Plastic is avoided in the production process and no palm oil is used. The products are also cruelty-free, use sustainable printing, and 100% biodegradable Sendle satchels where possible.

What is key for all wholesalers and retailers to note, is that sustainability is important for the planet and for their profit and it’s time to get on board.

ECO-FRIENDLY. RECYCLED. ETHICAL. SUSTAINABLE. THESE ARE NOT JUST BUZZ WORDS - IN THE MINDS OF TODAY’S CONSUMERS, THESE WORDS HOLD CURRENCY.

Ernst and Young Australia give 3 key points for consideration:

1. “Sustainable Consumer” values and attitudes vary.

2. People pay more for products reflecting their specific agenda.

3. Consumers look beyond a brand to the sustainability of the full value chain.

The word “sustainable” refers to many aspects in regards to products, production and business practice. Cazinc The Label encapsulates all aspects of social, economic and environmental sustainability at every stage of the value chain.

In April 2023, Forbes.com suggested 8 ways companies can adopt an eco-friendly approach to business, acknowledging that “...the demand for eco-friendly products and services—as well as consumers’ interest in protecting the planet—grows...” 4

African Queen Baskets is an enterprise combining both fair trading and sustainable production values. Bindou Burns, now located in the Byron Shire, maintains relationships with artisans in sub-Saharan Africa. They produce beautiful bags, baskets, hats and fanshand woven from sustainable grasses.

Apiwraps Beeswax Wraps has found a niche for those consumers who want to protect the planet from the heart of the home - the kitchen. Their reusable food wraps replace the need for plastic with pure, chemical-free, natural beeswax and organic cotton, with gorgeous designs. LOVEbomb

Honouring the people that create their pieces and the struggles they have been through, LOVEbomb jewellery is not only a precious gift to a loved one but a conscious decision to support artisans. Aluminium, recycled from dismantled bombs, is safely heated and poured into moulds in Laos under Fair Trade conditions. Sue Mason, LOVEbomb founder, takes these components using sterling silver

ear wires and chains to design and assemble what was once a bomb into stylish bangles, earrings and pendants. The social enterprise donates a percentage of its profit to various community projects in Laos, as well as donating books, educational material and sporting equipment.

WILD EMERY

The genesis story of Wild Emery is a simple one - the pursuit of good quality natural soap without unneccessary additives. In 2021 founder Beth began hand making soaps that were good for the planet and the body. These became popular with friends and family and so began her business growth and evolution to include bath bombs, shower steamers, lip balms and more. Edith and Geoff established the company in 1989 and their products originate from all over Mexico. Each region has its own individual style, colour palette, technique and materials. All pieces are handcrafted using traditional methods by Mexican artisans in an environment where art and craft are deeply embedded in the culture.

The traditions of crafting have been practiced for many centuries and are handed down from generation to generation. Edith and Geoff take great pride in supporting their artisan families, as will stockists, with high quality products that make beautiful statement gifts - vibrant and authentic.

BELOVED SCENTS

Gifts don’t get more original than AGHA member Beloved Scents’ Candtailscandles in cocktail glassware. Amie from Beloved Scents has been hand making a range of candles for many years, however, whilst sales were quiet during covid, she took on work as a cleaner in a local pub. The inspiration for her new Candtails range struck when Amie saved a large amount of unused glassware that was destined to be thrown out during pub renovations. What began as one box of Pina Colada Candtails, lead to a sensational range of 7 different cocktail inspired candles.

Launched at AGHA Sydney Gift Fair 2023 to great interest, the range is now in over 40 stores Australia-wide. Every wax berry and mint leaf used is also handcrafted by the team and the candles are Australian Made certified too - cheers to that!

EMPOWERING women collaboration THROUGH

Women have been involved in business for thousands of years, with the first recorded instance dating back as far as 1870 BC, in the city of Assur in northern Iraq. Assyrian women at the time were heavily contributing to the trading networks that flourished in the region, challenging the belief that business was only exclusive to men.

According to the Women’s Entrepreneurship Report, “one third of high-growth businesses worldwide are now run by women”1, and here we introduce just 3 of our AGHA women in business.

Little Joys by Amelie first started in 2019 as a way of raising funds for a school trip to France, but the purpose soon changed after the creator, Amelie’s mental health started to change. Amelie struggled with anxiety and soon her state became worse and escalated into a severe obsessivecompulsive disorder. Due to the severity, Amelie and her parents made the difficult decision for her to leave school to ensure the best chance of recovery. During that time, her passion for art and design soon became the sole focus of her motivation and it gave her a new lease of life.

With a new focus on mental health awareness, Amelie continued to make her little joy creations to help with mental health stating that, “I think mental health is not talked about enough - people have no idea what it’s like until they have experienced it. I just want to spread awareness so it can be talked about, and people can get the help they need”2

Her most notable products are her “Courage Bunnies” which she donates to Starship Children’s Hospital, NZ Heart Kids and charity One Mother to Another; and “Worry Monsters” donated to Child, Adolescent and Family Inpatient Services, while 5 percent of her newest products (Mental Health Wellbeing pins and cards) go to charity Voices of Hope.

Amelie is a testiment to the power of woman, despite age or state of health, to be able to achieve business success. Her next step is to write a new book filled with illustrations of characters targeting specific mental health issues.

The Queen of Quartz has an interesting beginning. As a child, Katie was obsessed with gemstones, particularly pyrite and peacock ore. She was introduced to palm reading by her maternal grandmother which then led Katie to learning tarot and exploring the metaphysical properties of gemstones. Her love for gemstones would soon come together to create something unique and beautiful.

The Queen of Quartz specialises in a wide selection of products ranging from headbands, crowns, necklaces and bracelets all made by Katie. The process of these gemstones starts from getting handpicked from a select group of suppliers who ethically source them. Then the gemstones are secured by wire wrapping them in place with a high-grade enamel coated wire.

Katie has donated the majority of the sales to charities including the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the RSPCA.

As we celebrate the contributions of women in business, let’s also recognise the power of sisterhood and the unique impact that sisters can have on entrepreneurship! Introducing FLATOUTbear, a business where two sisters work alongside each other to produce soft and cuddly flat teddy bears.

In 2001, FLATOUTbear’s sisters Sarah and Prue decided to open their own business inspired by their parents businesses’ as children. They watched as their dad work in his antique shop and then later saw their mum run her homewares shop, which she opened up alongside her friend. Having grown up with flat bears of their own, followed by their knowledge of retail and love of bears, it naturally made them want to start their own business.
