The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. It is available in several models depending on the lube capacity. A 50 watt unit sells for $42 and a 350 watt unit sells for $133.

Mobility

DLQHD Series Liquid Applicator

The Mobility Row Crop is available in two models, 600(200 cubic ft.) and 800(270 cubic ft.) features adjustable axle out to 120” allowing you to meet most row widths. The lug style tires give you up to 47” of clearance under the frame allowing you to pass over standing crop with minimal disturbance. This spreader gives you the diversity to handle all your fertilizer needs. Stainless steel construction is featured in the box, above frame gussets, conveyor and drive chains for years of proven reliability.

The DLQHD Series Liquid Applicator features heavy duty construction to handle the most extreme of conditions. The main frame features a 5x7 tubular frame along with the 4x6 front mount toolbar giving the strength and visibility you need. Models come in various row spacing and range up to 42’ wide.

DW Series Toolbar

Dual Tank Wagon WNDT1000GN – DESIGNED FOR TWO 1000 NH3 TANKS WNDT1500GN – DESIGNED FOR TWO 1450 NH3 TANKS WNDT2000GN – DESIGNED FOR ONE 2000 NH3 TANK WNDT3000GN – DESIGNED FOR ONE 3000 NH3 TANK These heavy duty running gears feature a walking tandem rear axle for smoother towing and greater stability while minimizing compaction. These models are also available with a single rear axle. The gooseneck design minimizes the turning radius along with spring lift assist and extendable tongue making for easier hookups.

The DW Series Toolbar is built to meet individual needs. Our toolbars feature industry leading down flex in the wings, which allows for travel over the roughest terrain, optimizing fertilizer placement. 60” of “rank” front to back in the frame allows for excellent trash flow. Heavy duty construction with 6x4 or 6x6 tubing gives you the strength you need in today’s environment. The DW Series comes in various row spacing and up to 58’ working width. Hydraulic folding wings maximize road transport clearance by folding 45 degrees.

the state has helped to grow Nebraska's economy and fuel economic development. There are 27 ethanol plants in Nebraska, with the capacity of producing more than 2 billion gallons of ethanol annually. Nebraska is the nation's second leading ethanol-producing state behind Iowa. More than 600 million bushels of corn grown in Nebraska have additional value added to them through ethanol processing within the state, along with more than 10 billion pounds of distillers grain, which is a byproduct of ethanol production and used as livestock feed. "Ethanol has had a big and significant impact on Nebraska's economy," Heineman said. "It has also had a very important impact on the state's agriculture economy." Because of the increased demand for corn for ethanol production, corn prices have dramatically increased compared to the prices prior to the implementation of the Renewable Fuel Standard in 2006. In the five years prior to the implementation of the RFS, statewide corn prices averaged $2.49 per bushel. In the five years since the implementation of the RFS, corn prices in Nebraska have averaged $5.26 per bushel. Also, during that five-year period since the implementation of the RFS, Nebraska corn production has increased by nearly 1 billion bushels compared to the previous five years, even with 2012's drought-reduced crop. "Since I have been governor, we have gone from the third-largest producer of ethanol to the second leading producer of ethanol," Heineman said. "We are headed to be the No. 1 state in cattle production. The Renewable Fuel Standard has been very helpful

to the state of Nebraska. There are so many good things about the direction we are heading and it just doesn't make sense for the EPA to back off this." In their letter, the governors point to an Iowa State University estimate that says "corn prices alone could drop 19 cents per bushel based on the proposed rule, which could bring corn prices below the cost of production for many farmers. The proposed EPA rule could also cause a ripple effect on agri-business, our communities, and the entire economy." And as prices have declined as the volume of corn has grown from this year's record corn harvest nationwide, coupled with the potential reduction in corn prices from the proposed EPA rule, it could create more producer dependence on government subsidies. The letter sends a direct request from the governors to the Obama administration asking it to use its regulatory authority to support the growing renewable fuels industry. "Specifically, we hope that you will encourage the EPA to increase the biodiesel volume to reflect current production levels, modify the cellulosic target to match production expectations, and reinstate the statutory conventional renewable fuel target since there is clearly no domestic supply shortage," the letter said. In a separate letter to the president, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn directly requested that the EPA reconsider the proposed rule. Quinn also stressed the economic and environmental importance of ethanol while pointing to the role domestically produced biofuel plays in providing jobs in rural America.

Corn quality will be affected by further handling, so the council said it annually publishes the Corn Export Quality Report, which assesses quality at the point of loading for international shipment. The 2013-14 export report will be published in March. "The takeaway message this year is that the United States has abundant supplies of high-quality corn," Sleight said. "We would remind buyers that they will get the quality level that they contract for, but with record production and good quality, it is a buyer's market as we head into 2014." In related news, advanced production techniques, informed growing practices and improved seed varieties helped corn growers achieve high yields in the National Corn Growers Association's 2013 National Corn Yield Contest. Entrants continued to far surpass the national average corn yield, setting a contest record with a new all-time high yield of 454 bushels per acre. A record five national entries surpassed the 400-plus bushel per acre mark. "While this contest provides individual growers a chance for good-natured competition with their peers, it also advances farming as a whole," said Don Glenn, chairman of NCGA's Production and Stewardship Action Team. "The techniques and practices contest winners develop provide the basis for widely used advances that help farmers across the country excel in a variety of situations, including drought." The 18 winners in six production categories had verified yields averaging more than 354.6 bushels per acre, compared to the projected national average of 160.4 bushels per acre in 2013. The all-time high yield record of 454 bushels per acre was set by David Hula of Charles City, Va. Hula's record production was all done organically and with special organic soil treatments to the farm, which used to house a sand and gravel mine. The other four national entrants recording yields of more than 400 bushels per acre were Johnny Hula of Charles City, Va.; Double SA Farms of Hart, Texas; Randy Dowdy of Valdosta, Ga.; and Dowdy Farms/Curtis Davis/Renato Lamas of Valdosta, Ga. For a complete list of winners, visit NCGA's website at www.ncga.com.

This has been a banner year for the state's and the country's corn harvest, with an estimated all-time record of 14 billion bushels. Nebraska's harvest has been estimated at more than 1.6 billion bushels. This year's crop is of high quality in a growing season with minor weather-related impacts, according to the 2013-14 Corn Harvest Quality Report, released last week by the U.S. Grains Council. "After a record drought last year, the world has been watching intently the 2013 U.S. corn crop," said Tom Sleight, USGC president and chief executive officer. "Production has rebounded, and quality is high despite some weather challenges. It's good news all around." Based on Nov. 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2013 corn crop is forecast at 25 percent more than last year's, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 9.55 million acres, is up 5 percent. Yield is forecast at 169 bushels per acre, up 27 bushels from 2012. The quality and production of Nebraksa's crop, especially the rebound in non-irrigated corn, which makes up about 40 percent of the state's crop, was reflected in the results of the National Corn Growers Association's 2013 National Corn Yield Contest. Nebraska farmer Marlon Henning of Bancroft finished second nationally in the A Division of nonirrigated corn with a yield of 298.565 bushels per acre. Henning's award-winning yield was Pioneer's P2088AM. Henning was also the state winner, followed by Corn Valley Farms of Louisville, Pioneer P1498HR, 291.372 bushels per acre; and David Jordon of Talmage, Pioneer P2088YHR, 268.1978 bushels per acre. All were in the non-irrigated corn division. Top winners in Nebraska in the notill/strip-till non-irrigated division were Gerald Steffensmeier of Howells, DeKalb DKC62-97, 292.1877 bushels per acre; Blane Anthony of Brock, DeKalb DKC67-58, 285.3666 bushels per acre; Corn Valley Farms of Louisville, Pioneer P1948HR, 274.6623 bushels per acre; and Idol Brothers of Hiawatha, Pioneer P1498HR, 271.4871 bushels per acre.

In the irrigated division, state winners were Kelly Driewer of York, Pioneer P2088AM, 317.3818 bushels per acre; Galen Pokorny of Bellwood, DeKalb DKC66-87RIB, 308.9466 bushels per acre; Heath Schake of Kearney, Pioneer 33D47, 306.1078 bushels per acre; and John Willoughby of Wood River, Pioneer P2088AM, 304.8052 bushels per acre. Nationwide, USDA's forecast of 14 billion bushels of corn is an increase of 30 percent from 2012. If realized, this will be a new record. Based on conditions as of Nov. 1, yields are expected to average 160.4 bushels per acre, up 5.1 bushels from the previous forecast and 37 bushels above the 2012 average. If realized, this will be the highest average yield since 2009. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 87.2 million acres, down 2 percent from the previous forecast and down slightly from 2012. According to the U.S. Grain Council report, weather was again a challenge, as a cold and wet spring delayed planting across much of the Corn Belt. Some areas also experienced flash-drought conditions in mid-summer, although they were generally offset by cooler temperatures. The report said weather adversities slightly reduced planted acreage and yield but did not impact harvest quality. As compared to prior years, weather-related impacts were modest and predictable. The U.S. Grain Council report found that aflatoxins were significantly lower than in the 2012 crop, with 99.4 percent of the samples testing below the U.S. Food and Drug Administration aflatoxin action level of 20 parts per billion. Moisture content, reflecting weather conditions, was slightly higher. But total damage levels remained very low, comparable to 2012 and below 2011 levels. Average test weight remained well above the limit for No. 1 grade corn, indicating overall good quality. "The report compares a wide range of quality factors across time," Sleight said, "and after the roller-coaster ride last year, the message in 2013 was that there were no surprises. A few test factors ticked up, others ticked down, consistent with weather conditions, while overall quality at harvest was very high. With record production, this is certainly a good news report."

Mary Clare Jalonick, Associated Press

service can be spotty in rural Clarence, but she sometimes types out entire blog posts on her smartphone and tries to respond to every Tweet that is directed to her some of them nasty. ``We've been late to the game, and we realized that if we don't start sharing, people are going to start forming opinions about you,'' says Chinn, who is working with the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, formed by more than 80 farm groups to try to improve agriculture's message. Chinn says she started using social media because of animal rights campaigns that have aimed to eliminate gestation crates that she and other hog farmers use for pregnant sows. Hog farmers say the crates are important to keep the pigs and their piglets safe; animal rights groups say they are inhumane and have pushed state legislatures to get rid of them. Chinn says her smaller farm could go under if she was forced to get rid of the crates, because she and her husband wouldn't be able to get a loan for new equipment. She believes that if people knew more about these operations, they would understand. Some critics say that dialogue isn't going to be enough, arguing that the companies will have to make some real concessions in addition to defending what they do if they are going to win over consumers. They point to Monsanto's expensive campaigns against mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods in California and Washington State. The company won both fights. Fighting the mandatory labels has ``made it look like big ag has more to hide,'' says Gary Hirshberg, a co-founder of the organic yogurt company Stonyfield Farm. He has worked in the past few years on the labeling campaign. Hirshberg and other critics have argued that Monsanto and retailers should just accept the labels and move on. Some farmers have decided that responding to consumer preference is the smartest route for their businesses. Nestled in low hills along the Missouri River just west of St. Louis, John Ridder has a 1,500 acre farm and a herd of 200 cattle. His wife, Heidi, recently created a Facebook profile for their cattle ranch, and the two have worked with the Missouri Beef Industry Council to reach out to consumers. They say they are shocked by some of the misperceptions about agriculture on the Internet, like the assumption that most cattle operations are so-called ``factory farms.'' At the same time, they realize they are somewhat powerless in the conversation. John says he stopped using growth hormones in his cattle because consumers don't want them. ``We don't do it because we don't want to have to explain how we do it,'' he says. Many farmers are taking that a step further and taking advantage of the consumer trends labeling foods as natural or local. ``It's the first time any of us have seen anything like this,'' says Ken Colombini of the National Corn Growers Association. ``The more that kind of demand builds, the more we're going to have to change what we're doing.''

OKAWVILLE, Ill. (AP) Add one more item to the list of chores that Larry Hasheider has to do on his 1,700-acre farm: defending his business to the American public. There's a lot of conversation about traditional agriculture recently, and much of it is critical. Think genetically modified crops, overuse of hormones and antibiotics, inhumane treatment of animals and over-processed foods. This explosion of talk about food some based on fact, some based on fiction has already transformed the marketplace. Slow to respond and often defensive, farmers and others in agribusiness have for several years let critics define the public debate and influence consumers. Now, the industry is trying to push farmers and businesses to fight back, connecting with those consumers through social media and outreach that many in agriculture have traditionally shunned. ``We as farmers now have another role in addition to being farmers,'' Hasheider says as he takes a break from harvesting his corn crop. ``It's something you have to evolve into.'' In addition to corn, Hasheider grows soybeans, wheat and alfalfa on the farm nestled in the heart of Illinois corn country. He cares for 130 dairy cows, 500 beef cattle and 30,000 hogs. And now, he's giving tours of his farm, something he says he never would have done 20 years ago. ``We didn't think anyone would be interested in what we were doing,'' he says. Like a lot of other farmers, Hasheider was wrong. Take the issue of genetically modified foods. There has been little scientific evidence to prove that foods grown from engineered seeds are less safe than their conventional counterparts, but consumer concerns and fears many perpetuated through social media and the Internet have forced the issue. A campaign to require labeling of modified ingredients on food packages has steadily gained attention, and some retailers have vowed not to sell them at all. Makers of the engineered seeds and the farmers and retailers who use them stayed largely silent, even as critics put forth a simple, persuasive argument: Consumers have a right to know if they are eating genetically modified foods. Modified seeds are now used to grow almost all of the nation's corn and soybean crops, most of which are turned into animal feed. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a well-known critic of food companies and artificial and unhealthy ingredients in foods, has not opposed genetically modified foods, on the basis that there's no evidence they are harmful. Still, director Michael Jacobson says, the issue has taken on a life of its own to the general public. Companies like Monsanto Corp. ``try to argue back with facts, but emotions often trump facts,'' Jacobson says. ``They are faced with a situation where critics have an emotional argument, a fear of the unknown.''

Perhaps no one understands this dynamic better than Robert Fraley, who was one of the first scientists to genetically modify seeds and now is executive vice president and chief technology officer of Monsanto. He says the company was late to the public relations game as critics worked to vilify it, even holding marches on city streets to protest Monsanto by name. Fraley says he has spent ``more than a few nights'' thinking about the company's image problem. He says Monsanto always thought of itself as the first step in the chain and has traditionally dealt more with farmers than consumers. About a year ago, in an attempt to dispel some of the criticism, the company started addressing critics directly and answering questions through social media and consumer outreach. The company is also reaching out to nutritionists and doctors, people whom consumers may consult. Fraley is personally tweeting and, like Hasheider, he says it's something he never would have thought about doing just a few years ago. ``We were just absent in that dialogue, and therefore a lot of the urban legends just got amplified without any kind of logical balance or rebuttal,'' Fraley says of the criticism. At a recent conference of meat producers, David Wescott, director of digital strategy at APCO Worldwide, told ranchers they needed to do a better job connecting with and listening to mothers, who often communicate on social media about food and make many of the household purchasing decisions. ``It's a heck of a lot more convincing when a mom says something than when a brand does,'' says Wescott, who says he has worked with several major farm and agriculture companies to help them reach out to consumers, especially moms. Other farm groups, like Illinois Farm Families, are inviting moms to tour the fields. Tim Maiers of the Illinois Pork Producers Association says the group has found that consumers generally trust farmers, but they have a lot of questions about farming methods. One of the moms, Amy Hansmann, says that though she remains concerned about the amount of processed foods and chemicals in the food supply, her experiences touring conventional farms with Illinois Farm Families changed her thinking. She was particularly amazed by the big farmers' use of technology and attempts to be sustainable. Hansmann says that before the tour, her perception from the media was that these big farmers were ``evil capitalists'' who focused only on their businesses and not on the care of the land or animals. ``What I found couldn't be further from the truth,'' she says. Chris Chinn, a blogger and a fifth generation farmer and mom from Clarence, Mo., is trying to reach out to others like Hansmann, too. Chinn, 38, carves 20 minutes or more out of her schedule every day to get on Twitter, comment on online articles and update her blog. Her internet

How Plants Know When it’s Time to Survive Fred Love-Iowa State Plants use a molecular alarm system to respond to environmental stress, new research confirms. The study, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could lead to improved traits in cash crops that would allow them to withstand adverse environmental conditions, particularly heat stress. “Given the concerns over climate change and some of the extreme shifts in weather we’ve seen in recent years, one of the most valued traits in crops is stress tolerance,” says Stephen Howell, a professor of genetics, development and cell biology at Iowa State University and senior author of the study. “It’s a very timely issue.” The research takes a close look at what happens to the model plant Arabidopsis at a molecular level when faced with environmental stress. It involves a process called unfolded protein response, which can signal when the plant senses harsh conditions.

When the alarm goes off, the plant activates survival measures that can protect crops from succumbing to weather extremes. Howell’s lab discovered one arm of the signaling system that activates the response in 2007 and a second arm in 2011. In the latest paper, the researchers first shut down and then restored both arms of the signaling pathway, demonstrating its importance in stress protection and normal plant growth. The signaling pathway that allows for the response features several redundancies that made the system difficult to study at first, says Renu Srivastava, an assistant scientist in the Iowa State Plant Sciences Institute and a co-author of the study. Shut down only part of the system, and stress signaling takes an alternate path, Srivastava says. But blocking each component in the pathway revealed its full importance to plants, she says. “Not only does it impact how a plant responds to environmental stress, but it’s also important for reproduction and development,” Srivastava says. “It’s a hugely influential system.”

The researchers chose Arabidopsis, a small flowering plant, for the study because it has a short life cycle and its whole genome has been sequenced, making it a good model for experimentation, says Yan Deng, a postdoctoral researcher in the Plant Sciences Institute and first author of the study. But the results of the research will have major implications for our understanding of stress response in cash crops such as corn, soybeans, and rice, Deng says. Howell says that identifying the genes that bolster a robust response to stress may pave the way for the development of crop varieties that can stand up to weather extremes—conditions Iowa farmers have encountered all too often in recent years. Such sources of environmental stress are among the most common factors that lead to reduced yields, he says. “This sort of research can help us to reprogram the genes that govern stress response and ultimately protect the plants from stress damage,” he says. Iowa Pork Congress Set for January 22 and 23 "Loos Tales" star keynote speaker The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) will conduct the 2014 Iowa Pork Congress on January 22 and 23 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. The nation's largest winter swine tradeshow and conference will be in Hy-Vee Hall with show hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 22 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 23. "The Iowa Pork Congress has established a tradition of excellence over the years and it attracts several thousand producers and others involved in the pork industry, as well as most of the top companies who serve the pork industry," said IPPA President Greg Lear, a Spencer area producer. "We offer timely and informative seminars facilitated by some of the industry's leading experts, great social functions and attendees have an array of networking opportunities. It really is a show for anyone who is involved in pork production, including our young swine enthusiasts." The IPPA said interest in the Iowa Pork Congress remains very strong among pork industry vendors and nearly 300 Iowa, U.S. and international companies will fill the HyVee Hall tradeshow floor. Products ranging from equipment and nutrition to genetics and pharmaceuticals will be on display.

Several exhibitors are rolling out new or enhanced products during Pork Congress. IPPA will welcome attendees to the Pork Information Plaza on the north tradeshow floor where guests can visit with producer leaders and representatives from the National Pork Board, National Pork Producers Council and other affiliated organizations. Attendees will again have a wide range of seminars to choose from. An update on what's happening in Washington, the latest on PEDV, an economic outlook, the Affordable Care Act and opportunities for new farmers are among the scheduled sessions. The Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy also will be discussed. Sixth generation farmer and agriculture advocate Trent Loos brings his passion and wit to the 2014 Iowa Pork Congress as the keynote speaker. In "Tell that to the Crunchy Momma," Loos will address the need to reeducate consumers on modern food production. The "Loos Tales" star will address attendees at 2 p.m. on January 22. Hog farmers also will be able to obtain or renew their PQA Plus and TQA certifications, and a certification session for confinement site manure applicators is again being offered.

"We try to provide the best of everything at Pork Congress, from the tradeshow to the social events," Lear said. "This is our 42nd show and with all of the activities we have scheduled, Pork Congress should be another great event for the pork industry." Producers can pre-register to attend Pork Congress through January 9. IPPA members can attend the tradeshow and conference at no cost by registering by the deadline. Register at iowaporkcongress.org or by using the form in the November issue of the Iowa Pork Producer magazine. Non-IPPA members can save $5 off the normal $10 admission cost by registering online by the deadline. Registrations will be accepted after the deadline through each day of the show, but the cost will be $10. Pork Congress week will start on January 20 with the annual IPPA Taste of Elegance contest and reception. The IPPA Annual Meeting will be on January 21 and the annual Iowa Pork Foundation Kickoff Reception and Auction will take place that evening. The Pork Congress Banquet is on January 22. The IPPA Youth Swine Judging Contest will be in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on January 23. For more information, contact IPPA at (800) 372-7675 or visit www.iowaporkcongress.org.
