Kobach Seeks NE to Host 3 to End Prairie Beef Feedlot Chicken Protection Round-table Events TOPEKA, — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is backing a bill that would exclude the lesser prairie chicken from federal protection.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Kobach told the Senate Natural Resources Committee on Thursday that the bill would likely lead to a legal battle that pits state rights against federal law.

The bill would assert state sovereignty over nonmigratory wildlife and declare null and void any federal law in Kansas on the lesser prairie chicken. Under the bill, state officials also would be allowed to charge federal officials with a felony for enforcing a federal law dealing with the lesser prairie chicken.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is deciding whether to list the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

LINCOLN — People who work in the beeffeedlot industry can learn about the latest business trends at three events in Nebraska.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension is hosting round-table events to share updates on feedlots. The events will take place on Feb. 11 at the Prairie Winds Community Center in Bridgeport, Feb. 12 at the Holiday Inn Express in Lexington, and Feb. 13 at the Nielsen Community Center in West Point.

Registrations begin at 8 a.m. local time.

Participants can pre-register by phone, fax, email or mail, but are asked to do so by Feb. 5. The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. It is available in several models depending on the lube capacity. A 50 watt unit sells for $42 and a 350 watt unit sells for $133.

Millennial consumers are becoming more important to the beef industry. That’s because their views will impact not only current demand for beef, but demand well into the future.

Consumers born between about 1980 and 2000, account for approximately a fourth of the U.S. population, and about a third of all adults – more than the Baby Boomer generation. Controlling about $200 billion in annual spending, they are certainly significant to beef sales today.

Research conducted through the Beef Checkoff program in 2011 shows that these consumers don’t necessarily see food just as fuel or as sustenance. They view it as an adventure; a route to diverse cultural and social experiences.

The research demonstrated that while Millennials really enjoy beef, they generally know very little about cooking it or shopping for it. Those are key deterrents for product purchases by this group. They recognize that beef has benefits to good health, such as building muscle and helping maintain energy, but they lack basic nutritional facts about beef.

Millennials are knowledge seekers. About three-quarters in the study said they wanted information about steaks and how to prepare and cook them, and 50 percent said they would buy more beef if they knew more about the different cuts. In fact, 54 percent said it’s hard to know what cuts to choose in the meat case.

The results of the study suggested consumer education could be an important tool for marketing to Millennials. About a quarter of this generation said they would pick up information, such as recipes or brochures, at the meat counter, compared to only 7 percent of Baby Boomers.

About 56 percent reported disappointment in the results of a beef meal they’ve prepared, but another finding of the research was even more disconcerting: Approximately 60 percent of Millennial parents said they are limiting their children’s consumption of red meat. In 2012, the checkoff funded a Millennial Parent study that showed that chicken was perceived as easier to prepare and was a “kid-friendly option,” whether eating at home or away from home.

These parents also perceived beef as less healthy than other meats. Older Millennials (ages 25-32) are cautious about preparing beef meals for the family, and 46 percent said they do not find beef convenient to cook for kids.

This is where the challenge becomes an opportunity. Millennial parents want to make the best food choices for their families, and are willing to learn. Beef ’s positive nutrition message, its versatility, its convenience, and its variety of lean and delicious products can help this generation feel comfortable and confident in choosing beef.

Programs being conducted through the Beef Checkoff program are reflecting the increased focus on Millennials. Because research shows that this age group utilizes new communications technology, more outreach is taking place in websites and through social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

Traditional ways of gathering information through printed articles or advertisements are less likely to be utilized by this group.

They want it easily accessible through mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.

The Nebraska Beef Council is reaching out to this new generation of consumers through their Facebook page and YouTube channel.

With an educational focus in mind, their social media sites provide viewers with beef facts, cooking tips and a variety of delicious beef meal recipes. The Nebraska Beef Council plans to continue its online activity in an effort to educate Millennials on the benefits of beef and provide them with the tools they need to feel confident preparing beef meals.

The beef industry already has a leg up: Millennials like beef. Now it’s working to get them more comfortable preparing the product, eating it and serving it to their families.

The Nebraska Beef Council is a non-profit organization served by a nine-member board of directors.

The volunteers oversee Nebraska’s beef checkoff and checkoff-funded programs. Programs for marketing and promotion are funded by the $1 beef checkoff.
