ST. LOUIS (AP) - A central Missouri ethanol plant is suspending production Feb. 1, saying the extended drought has made it almost impossible to get enough corn to make the alternative fuel, a plant spokesman said Friday.

POET Biorefining plans to keep its Macon facility open and all 44 employees will keep working, spokesman Matt Merritt said. The company plans to move ahead with $14.5 million in plant upgrades, and workers will use the down time to help with some of the upgrades.

The drought that has dragged on since last spring has taken a toll on corn, and Missouri has been hit hard.

The state isn't alone. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report earlier this month showing that for the 2012 growing season, farmers harvested 10.8 billion bushels of corn, less than three-fourths of what the agency predicted last spring. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There's just really no corn in the immediate [Macon] area available,â&#x20AC;? Merritt said. Shipping in corn from elsewhere wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an option because of the cost. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It proved to be difficult to find that corn at a competitive price,â&#x20AC;? Merritt said.

President Barack Obama visited the Macon plant in April 2010 as part of a tour of three corn-growing states - Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. During that tour, the President reaffirmed the goal of tripling U.S. ethanol production in 12 years, in part to make the nation less dependent on foreign oil.

Merritt said POET will continue to purchase corn for future use when it becomes available. There is no timetable for when production will resume.

POET operates 27 plants in seven states and is based in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Macon plant has been in operation since 2000.

It wraps around the filter housing and reduces or eliminates the possibility of cold weather fuel gelling stopping the engine. It is easily removable and transferable and is wired for your choice of: direct current or alternating current or a convertible model combining dc and ac. “Peel & Stick” Engine Preheater The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. It is available in several models depending on the lube capacity. A 50 watt unit sells for $42 and a 350 watt unit sells for $133.

Nebraska Farmers Advised to Plan for More Drought CLAY CENTER, Neb. (AP) - The state climatologist has advised Nebraska farmers, ranchers and cattle producers to plan for another year of drought.

At a gathering of beef producers in Clay Center on Tuesday, State Climatologist Al Dutcher estimated that Nebraska has a 70 percent chance of a second consecutive year of drought, even though he expects more snow and rain yet this winter and in the coming spring.

The Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said in data released Thursday that more than 96 percent of Nebraska remains in the two worst stages of drought.

According to the Hastings Tribune, Dutcher said the likely scenario includes just enough moisture for farming but far from enough to replace the water in lakes and streams depleted by last summer's high heat and low rain.

“We could still come out of this with normal ag yields if we have normal precipitation, but we're still going to have this hydrological drought,” Dutcher said.

To end the hydrological drought, Dutcher said, 8 to 10 inches of moisture more than normal would be needed.

The warm, dry weather started early in the 2012 growing season. Trees flowered in March and began losing leaves in August.

Many farmers finished their fall harvest by early October, weeks earlier than normal.

“Every month seemed to be resembling the month ahead of it,” Dutcher said. The conditions placed early demands on limited water supplies.

Drought Mitigation Center Director Michael Hayes said last month that there is anecdotal evidence that groundwater levels have already been declining in parts of the state.

If conditions remain dry in 2013, Hayes said, it could create widespread problems for well owners in the state, so they have been encouraged to have their well levels checked.

Said Dutcher on Tuesday: “I think everyone should really have a good drought plan in place. I don't enjoy saying this any more than you enjoy hearing it.”

Ag Groups Join to Create Renewable Fuels Coalition DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ Several Iowa businesses and organizations have joined together to create a coalition that will push for continued government support of renewable fuels including ethanol and biodiesel.

The Iowa RFS Coalition includes biotech giants DuPont, Monsanto and Syngenta. In addition, groups representing corn and soybean growers and farm equipment dealers have joined in the effort. The group's members also include the Iowa Biodiesel Board, Iowa Biotechnology Association and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

The coalition, in announcing its creation, says the goal is to keep in place the federal government's Renewable Fuels Standard, a policy which requires an increasing amount of the nation's gasoline supply to include ethanol and biodiesel.

Critics from the oil industry and some food groups have lobbied to weaken or suspend the standard.

News Briefs Jackson Bighorn Lawrence UNL Schedules Carrying Bug Considers ‘Food Hub’ Farm Estate Planning Workshop Linked to Pneumonia for Local Produce JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - Biologists think there's a risk of another pneumonia outbreak developing among Jackson Hole's bighorn sheep herd.

The Jackson Hole Daily reported Monday that ten of 14 sheep darted earlier this month tested positive for a bacteria linked to bighorn die-offs in the West.

Biologists took samples from the animals because of a high death rate among radiocollared sheep. Six of the 20 tracked sheep have died since the summer.

The tests of the darted sheep did yield some good news. Game and Fish Wildlife Biologist Doug Brimeyer said none of the 14 had a more dangerous pathogen and all had good fat reserves.

The area's bighorn sheep herd was cut in half by a pneumonia outbreak in 2002 and the population took years to recover.

Black Hills Event to Showcase Sheep Shearing RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Sunday event at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo is showcasing the working practice of sheep shearing.

This year's National Sheep Shearing Competition will feature 250 to 300 sheep from South Dakota.

Sheep shearing competitor Loren Opstedahl says not all sheep are created equal. He says one might have wrinkly skin and one might be aggressive, but he has to be prepared to shear them all.

New to the competition will be a wool handling component, along with machine shearing and blade shearing.

Leann Brimmer says her family has raised sheep for more than 100 years, and her dad used to shear. She got into competitive shearing several years ago.

The free event at the Crystalyx BioBarrel Sale Ring in Rushmore Hall runs from noon to 4 p.m.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - A Lawrence group says it wants to find a central place to make locally produced food available to larger institutional buyers.

The Douglas County Food Policy Council says a “food hub” would link farmers to institutions like schools, hospitals and restaurants.

Council Director Eileen Horn says larger institutions are interested in using more locally produced food but often can't get a consistent supply.

But Horn says smaller-scale producers in Douglas County and surrounding counties are growing large volumes of food, particularly fruits and vegetables. A food hub would make it easier for institutions to connect to the smaller growers.

The food council tells the Lawrence Journal-World that creating the food hub will be one of its top priorities this year.

MEAD, Neb. (AP) - A workshop aimed at helping farmers and ranchers plan for passing their farms and ranches to their families has been scheduled for Feb. 5.

The workshop is titled “Planning for the Future.” It is scheduled to begin with registration at 9 a.m. and run until 3:30 p.m. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead in eastern Nebraska.

Organizers say the workshop will include discussion of business, family and tax issues and the legal tools used to address those issues.

Topics include family dynamics; financial viability; the transfer process; estate, gift and inheritance taxes; probate, wills and trusts.

USDA Says Nebraska Had Biologists to 2.48M Cattle on Feed Collar Elk to LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Federal authorities Study Movements say the number of cattle in Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more contained 2.48 million head on Jan. 1.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the new figure is 3 percent under the total from a year ago.

Marketings totaled 425,000 head, which was 12 percent higher than last year.

Placements totaled 390,000 head, which was up 3 percent from Jan. 1, 2011.

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service says the state's Dec. 1 total of cattle on feedlots was 2.53 million head, which was slightly lower than the year-ago figure.

Nationwide, the Jan. 1 number of cattle and calves on feed was 11.2 million head, which was 6 percent under the total from a year ago.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) _ State wildlife biologists plan to radio collar 50 cow elk in the Missouri River Breaks area and track the animals for two years to find out where they go during hunting season as part of an effort to better manage their numbers.

Officials with the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks say the elk populations have been greater than the objectives set by the Missouri River Breaks Elk Working Group, even with the issuing of a “liberal” number of cow and elk licenses.

FWP Malta-area Biologist Scott Thompson tells the Independent Record that elk seem to seek out secure habitat during hunting season. He says the study seeks to learn if they're being harbored on private property, or just more difficult to find on public lands.
