Keith Stafford has been involved not only in ag production, but in helping others to prosper for 35 years. Those efforts earned him the Hubs Freedom Award.

As a farmer, Keith Stafford's focus isn't only on his crops and cattle but also on the welfare of Nebraska's agriculture and natural resources. For the last 35 years, Stafford has been involved not only in ag production, but in helping others to prosper in the field by serving on several boards and being a mainstay at the Buffalo County Fair. For his dedication, Stafford has been awarded the Hub's Freedom Award in the Agriculture Category. Tom and Mary Henning of Kearney nominated Stafford. In their nomination letter, the Hennings say Stafford has given unselfishly of his time and talents to promote agriculture and the Kearney area in many ag- and community-related activities. "Although Keith keeps busy with a large farming and livestock operation, he will make time to lend a helping hand to a friend, a neighbor, or a person in 4-H who needs help with a project. "He epitomizes exactly what this award is all about," the Hennings wrote. Modestly, Stafford says, "It takes people

that are committed to make things to go ahead and be more than just a dream, and gosh, there's a lot of those type of leaders around." Stafford hasn't always been involved in agriculture. After graduating from Kearney State College in 1967 with a degree in biology and business, he entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Bethesda, Md. There, he met his wife, Julie. From 1970 to 1974, the Staffords worked in biomedical research in the Washington, D.C., area. Then they returned to the Kearney Continued on page 39

One might wonder why, in the late 1800s, a young German man would want to leave his home in the quaint town of Düsseldorf Germany, to search for a place across the ocean that would separate him from everything familiar. Düsseldorf is located along the northern banks of the Rhine River right where the Dussel River emptied into the Rhine. In the mid-1800s Düsseldorf was a farming and fishing “berg” that was well known for its art, culture and beer. The weather was pleasant; the town was located along the banks of one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe and the area was recovering nicely from the destruction and depression following the Napoleonic Wars. Life must have been pretty comfortable in Dusseldorf, so why would anyone want to leave? Sometimes living in a nice place just wasn’t everyone’s idea of “living.” There were some adventurous young Germans who wanted to go somewhere that offered more opportunities and adventure. The stories of wide open-spaces in America triggered visions of unlimited opportunities for a better life. They had heard about many successes in this new land, especially with the enactment of the Homestead Act of 1862. One could get 160 acres of free land simply by living on the land, making improvements, and farming a certain portion of it. The words free land must have been a great impetus toward taking the risk of moving from the familiar town of Düsseldorf to the unknown prairies of middle America. One of these young German opportunists was a 31-year-old man named Valentine Thomas. Valentine was born in Düsseldorf in 1856 and was raised in Germany. He married Elizabeth Kamenn in 1885 and they sailed to the United States in 1887. The couple arrived in Baltimore, Md., and were certainly filled with excitement and anticipation. They knew they had to make the very long journey halfway across the continent before reaching their destination — a preemption in the remote area of Nebraska later known as Dutch Flats. Dutch Flats was an arid region located in the northern portion of what is now Scotts Miles and Miles of Bluff County. Four and a half year old Trevor Sladky likes farm life. "He does enjoy helping, enjoys riding the tractor and being on the farm," his father, Kevin, said. Kevin wouldn't mind it a bit if Trevor followed in his footsteps and became a farmer. After all, it's a career that not only suits him just fine, but it's also the career of his father, Ron, and his grandfather, Bernie. The three generations of Sladky farmers have been working the land for more than 60 years. Bernie learned to be a farmer from his father. "Back then, you just followed along," he said. "And, that's what I wanted to do anyway." Bernie said his dad had his own steam engine for harvesting and did custom farming. "We did the same thing and followed in his footsteps," said Bernie, who started farming on his own in the early 1950s. Ron grew up helping out on the farm. He said any day he could get out of school to help with the harvest was a good day. "Spring was the same way. I'd get to go out and disk," he added. Ron started farming right after high school graduation. "I had an opportunity to rent 300 acres so I had to make a decision really quick," he stated.

After high school, Kevin attended Southeast Community College to study crop production and agribusiness. After graduation from SCC, he worked in several ag-related fields before starting full-time in the family business about three years ago. Bernie, who is "retired on paper", said he could have never guessed what farming would be like today. Back when he started, he said you did things the way you had for years. "You just kept doing the same old, same old," Bernie recalled. That worked, but technology and other advancements have been very important for the ag industry. Ron, who has worked a lot over the years with various programs and test plots through the University of Nebraska Extension, said one of the biggest changes in farming is no-till. It is a practice that has developed over the years as a way to help farmers be more efficient. "Especially in the 80s and the tough economy, we had to find ways to be more efficient," Ron said. "We brought no-till into our operation to see how it would fit us," he added. "We kept doing it more and more." Bernie agreed.

At the time the Webers were looking for someone to manage a portion of the farming operation. "I actually thought I was going to stay out of farming forever," Stafford said. "It was a thing that showed up at the right time, and the thing to do. So we did it, and I've never looked back." Unbeknownst to them, the opportunity would kick off a successful farming career and commitment to community service work. From 1982 to 1995, in addition to farming, Stafford was an agriculture loan officer at Platte Valley State Bank in Kearney. He continues to serve in various ways with the Buffalo County Fair and 4-H programs, Gateway Farm Expo, the Nebraska Cattlemen's Classic, the Central Platte Natural Resources District, Fort Kearney Cattlemen's Association, Nebraska Cattleman's board of directors, and Kearney Pork Producers. Being comes naturally for Stafford. He and his two sisters grew up in the Riverdale area, where they were active in the community and church. His parents, Gilbert and Dorothy Stafford, were longtime 4-H leaders. "It just seemed like the thing to do," Stafford said of his dedication. "It just feels good to be involved and make a difference." But today, Stafford calls himself more of a spectator than anything. "I have a philosophy: There's a time to move on and let new blood do those things. You might overstay your welcome," Stafford said. Today, Stafford stays busy with his 225 cow/calf pairs and farms almost 3,000 acres of corn and soybeans on the east, north and west of Kearney. But he is nearly as active as he once was in various service organizations. And that's OK with him. "It's nice when other people step up, and pretty presumptive if you think you are the only one who can pull the wagon. That's kind of the wrong thinking."

Continued from page 12 easy for the Thomases when they first arrived. They lived in a primitive dwelling dug into the sloping side of a hill. They had to haul water four miles from the North Platte River and found that even digging a water well was difficult because of the lack of local timber. When cash was in short supply, the couple even went out on the prairies to collect buffalo bones. The Thomases committed their lives to improving their homestead and this little community at Dutch Flats. Valentine built a small sod house about two years after they settled on the Flats. It was a two-room structure that was a great improvement over the dugout they had been living in since they first arrived. This sod home was eventually moved to its present location at the North Platte Valley Museum. Thanks to the financing of their sons, the sod house was dismantled and reconstructed to specifications matching the original home. Valentine later took out a timber claim in Sioux County and started a large sheep-raising operation. He had acquired more than 300 acres of land that increased in value with the use of an irrigation system. Valentine Thomas’ innovative and forward thinking farming and irrigation ideas helped to make him a very successful agricultural-

ist. Valentine and Elizabeth had four sons who were a great help in getting their agricultural businesses established. Two of them, Gottfried and Gustav Adolph, moved to Arkansas to manage a rice plantation for their father. Another son, Christian Henry, moved to Wyoming to operate a large sheep ranch. Carl stayed near home where he settled in the Dutch Flats area. As a family, under the guidance of Valentine, they were able to acquire wealth and property, making them prominent leaders in their little western Nebraska community. No one knows what life would have been like had Valentine Thomas stayed in Düsseldorf, Germany. He certainly would have seen a Germany much different from his home on Dutch Flats. He would have seen a Germany that was experiencing an industrial revival that made his hometown of Düsseldorf a vital part of the Rhine-Ruhr industrial complex. He would have seen his town suffer through the devastation of World War I and the depression that followed. He would never have experienced life as he found it on the vast prairies of the great American

plains. In Germany he would have been only one of so many who were part of the long, long history of the Rhineland. He certainly would not have been able to fulfill his dream of freedom, freeland and fortune. To Valentine, Dutch Flats was to become a perfect home for himself and his family. Valentine Thomas died at the age of 83 in Casper, Wyo., but his legacy continues to be a part of the history of western Nebraska thanks to his family and the North Platte Valley Museum. One can still see his original sod home at the museum and read more about the story of Valentine. The North Platte Valley Museum is proud to display the old sod house which is filled with many of the Thomases’ original furnishings including a beautiful hutch made by Valentine that was used by the family when they lived in the old “soddy.” The museum possesses a great deal of information about the Thomases and the story of moving the sod house from Dutch Flats to its present location on the museum property. Continued from page 13 "It saved a lot of tractor time, and there was one less tractor on the yard," he said, estimating that no-till cuts their tractor time down from about 1,000 hours a year to half of that or less. And, there is another benefit too. "Saving money is fine, but I also always worry about taking care of the land," Ron said. He said it is a good land stewardship practice. The same is true of fertilizer and other chemical applications. The use of GPS, soil testing grids and guidance systems now helps farmers to be more efficient and cost effective. "We're not wasting it that way either," Kevin added. When Bernie got started, however, precision farming was not in the vocabulary. "There was no soil testing back then," he said. "We didn't know how much we needed so we just guessed at it." But, precision is now a term often used on the farm. "It's more precise," Kevin said of today's equipment. "It's more and more technology. Tractors are steering themselves, and you can start your pivot by calling it."

Of course, more technology means more up front costs for farmers. "But in the long run, it pays off," he added. Technology is not the only thing the Sladkys have seen change through the years. "In agriculture, we wear so many different hats," Ron said. Farmers have to be able to work with the banker, seed corn dealer, equipment repair, and, now more than ever, be a marketer. According to the Sladkys, keeping on top of the markets is probably one the most important jobs of today's farmer. Bernie said the selling price for crops didn't change that much when he first got involved with farming. A 3 to 4 cents change during the course of a growing season was about maximum. "You knew pretty much when you put it in the ground exactly what you were going to get at harvest," he said. That's not the case anymore. Prices can change 3 to 4 cents in a day and see several dollar shifts during a growing season. And while it is good news that selling prices have gone up for farm products, the number of producers has gone down.

Bernie recalled that there used to be about four farmers for every section. "Now, you are lucky if you've got one," he said. "We've got to be more efficient. There is more people to feed now than before, and there is less of us to do it." Fewer producers, changing technology and more hats to wear can make farming a challenge. "There are a lot of variables, plus the one we can't control - mother nature," Ron stated. Weather is always on the farmers' minds. Bernie recalled the flood of 1963. The waters took his entire crop. Luckily, he said, they had crop insurance. "We didn't make any money that year, but we covered costs," he stated. Kevin knows that farming isn't easy. He also knows that it used to be a lot harder. "Grandpa tells stories," he said. "It's a lot different now." Time will only tell what the future will bring to farming. Little Trevor will probably have his own stories to tell. "He's a farmer from the word go," his greatgrandfather said proudly.
