The Nebraska Soybean Board recently funded a soybean trade mission to China, March 19-31, 2010. The purpose of this trip was to provide farmer leaders a better understanding of the Chinese economic growth and how that influences the demand for soybeans and soy products. China is going to be the growth market for soybeans for the next decade. They will likely be the major soybean importer and a smaller importer of soybean meal because of their crushing capacity and their demand for edi-

ble oils. However, even a small demand for soybean meal could be significant for Nebraska soybean producers. While in China, the producers had the opportunity to visit and introduce Nebraska soybeans to importers, crushers, and end users in three of the most important importing regions in China. During these meetings, the Nebraska soybean producers gave presentations that described the current state of

A University of Minnesotabacked research team has embarked on a three-year, $500,000 study to determine how changing landscape in North Dakota's prairie pothole region affects the health of bees and their ability to pollinate crops nationwide. It's a pressing issue, and not just because North Dakota's honey production _ perennially tops in the nation _ depends on robust bee colonies. ``Our bees are in trouble,'' said Marla Spivak, a professor of entomology at the University of Minnesota and the lead researcher. ``They are in poor health nationwide,'' and numbers have declined sharply. Many factors have cut deeply into bee populations over the past several years, affecting both native bees and honeybees, which are not native to the U.S. The mysterious and widespread collapse of colonies _ documented in a 2007 PBS series ``Silence of the Bees'' _ has put at risk nearly 100 crops that are dependent on bee pollination. Largely because of changes in land use, ``There aren't enough flowers for bees, which affects their nutrition,'' Spivak said. ``And some of the flowers out there are contaminated with pes-

ticides, which poisons bees and leaves them nutritionally compromised.'' Bees also have their own diseases and parasites, in particular a mite called the Varroa destructor, blamed for widespread ``bee colony collapse'' in the U.S. and elsewhere. `Ìt lives up to its name,'' Spivak said. `Ìt's probably the primary bee pathogen problem, and it's a double hit because it sucks blood, which weakens the bee, and it transmits virus.'' In the North Dakota study, ``we want to look at landscape effects on bee nutrition and the functioning of its immune system,'' she said. Zach Browning, a beekeeper near Jamestown, N.D., and past president of the national beekeepers association, will provide bee colonies to be placed in ``resource rich'' and ``resource poor'' landscapes, Spivak said. The richer landscapes will have an abundance of the flowers that bees like to forage on, such as willows, maples and other trees that provide vital early spring protein. ``Then they get a lot from wild mustards and other early blooming flowers,'' she said. `Ìn summer, there's clover and alfalfa and many plants we dismiss as weeds. Local ISU Extension Agronomist Travels to Ukraine by Emma Struve, Denison Bulletin/Review In October of 2009 and again in January of 2010, groups of Ukrainian farmers came to Iowa to see what farmers here were doing for corn and soybean productions. In March, Iowa State University Extension Agronomist in west-central Iowa Mark Licht traveled to the Ukraine to offer recommendations and learn about crop production in the foreign country. Licht, who lives in Carroll with his wife and two sons, helped coordinate the Iowa visits and said, "They were planning on having someone (visit) from the United States...and were looking for people who had previously worked with the groups and that could travel on short notice." He said, "it was a great opportunity" and decided to go. Licht traveled to the Ukraine under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Farmer-toFarmer program, which provides voluntary technical assistance to farmers, farm groups and agribusiness in developing and transitional countries to promote sustainable improvements in food processing, production and marketing. "They were really interested in soybean production," Licht said. "My farmer hosts were gracious and hospitable. They were very inquisitive and asked a lot of good questions." While in the Ukraine, Licht visited eight farms in the central and north-central part of the country, an area three to four times the size of Iowa. He described the landscape as a mix of prairie and forest not unlike Iowa; further north in the country was more forested and further south more grassland. The soils were productive with high organic matter, he recalled. The crop mix includes more cereal grains such as wheat and barley as well as sunflowers and canola. Corn and soybeans are a relatively recent addition to the rotation. Some farms Licht visited will be planting soybeans for the first time this season. To a lesser extent farms in the Ukraine grow sugar beets, alfalfa and potatoes, too. Some field peas are grown for livestock feed, Licht noted. Farms are, however, fairly specialized Licht said. About half the farms he visited were crop farms alone, others had an emphasis on livestock production and produced crops to support that primary enterprise. They were "typically diversified from a crop standpoint," Licht added, as most used a four to five crop rotation system. Many farms were left-over collectives from the Soviet era and are investor owned.

Another big difference between the Ukraine and the United States is that the Ukrainian government has placed a moratorium on the sale of agricultural land. Even extremely large farms - Licht visited one that was 370,000 acres, more farmland than most Iowa counties have - must rent much of the production acreage. In one case, a 2,500-acre farm had 300 landowners, with each landowner the farm director entered into a five to 10 year lease agreement. The large farms, Licht continued, are commercial enterprises and have management or professional staff including accountants, veterinarians and agronomists in addition to laborers as well as side enterprises such as oil processing or used equipment sales. A contrast to Iowa which has, Licht said, "family farms, for the most part, where owners are growers...and they make decisions on the fly. "In the systems over there, the person driving the tractor or combine doesn't make decisions," Licht explained. This situation poses challenges for quality control. For example, deciding when to do field work based on conditions because the person making the decision is not necessarily in the field to observe if the soil it too wet or not and the person operating

the equipment doesn't have the authority. One of the bigger challenges Ukrainian farms face is getting capital to make equipment and technology purchases. Producers import older, used equipment from Germany, the United States and Brazil. "Basically what they have is what we had five years ago," Licht commented. Their equipment has the capability to apply nutrients at a variable rate but they aren't necessarily grid sampling, for example. Farmers have, or can get, technology but can't utilize it as well because of a deficit in satellite service. "We have access to many, many more satellites then they do," stated Licht. Some of the regulations Ukrainian farmers have to contend with pose additional obstacles. The government has not banned the use of GMO seed but does require companies that sell the seed to be registered. Many companies hesitate to register because accepted regulations in the U.S., such as not replanting seed, aren't as enforceable there and they are not willing to assume the risk of technology being misused. But, Licht said, "that depends on the government and seed companies coming to an agreement." Seed types, such as those with herbicide and pest protection traits that are virtually taken for granted in the United States, are highly desirable but little used in the Ukraine. Commodity groups, like the Iowa Soybean Association or Iowa Corn Growers Association, are not as formalized in the Ukraine, either. Something that stood out in Licht's recollection was the condition of the roads - not good. He has little sympathy left for the people in western Iowa who complain about their roads, Licht joked. In many places in the

Ukraine the roads are in "really poor shape" or virtually non-existent. "This (trip) gave me an opportunity to help a developing country with corn and bean production," Licht said. Many of the topics addressed with the Ukrainian farmers were no different from those dealt with on a day-to-day basis in Iowa: seeding rate, planting date, planting depth, and so on, though the recommendations were a little different to account for the slightly colder climate. Licht compared it to northern Minnesota or southern Canada. Licht commented on the people he visited, "They really want to learn from us. "We have things to learn from them...I liked to do it for better perspective," Licht added. 43523

By summer, about 240 colonies _ each with 40,000 to 50,000 bees _ will be distributed to the various landscapes, primarily in the prairie pothole region, she said. The area was chosen in part because it already has been the subject of detailed federal studies of ecosystems, climate change and land cropping patterns. The study will be financed by a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Jeff Pettis of USDA's Agricultural Research Service will participate in the study. In the study's next stage, researchers will follow the bees to California for next February's almond bloom. Of the nation's 2.5 million commercial bee hives, 1.5 million are put to work pollinating almonds, said Ned ``Chip'' Euliss, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey who assembled the study team. Bees get their protein from pollen, and as they collect it they pollinate apples, cranberries, blueberries, melons and much more, Euliss said. ``There are certain crops possible only because of bees,'' including almonds. ``Our food security depends on bees,'' he said. ``I've seen reports that value bees as a $15 billion benefit annually.'' Euliss is a beekeeper himself, starting about eight years ago when his wife found a bluebird box she had put up filled with bees, and she asked him to remove the intruders. ``The bees found me instead of me finding the bees,'' Euliss said. He operates about 400 hives now in the Jamestown area. In addition to their critical work as pollinators, North Dakota bees (and their commer-

cial keepers) produced 34.7 million pounds of honey in 2009, which was 4 percent below 2008 production but still highest in the nation _ nearly twice secondplace South Dakota's 17.8 million pounds. USDA figures showed that California, which usually competes with North Dakota for most honey produced, fell to 11.7 million pounds in 2009. Much of the drop was blamed on mite infestations. ``We've always had problems with mites,'' Euliss said. `Ì don't remember the good old days.'' Last summer was cool and not a good year for bees, he said, but North Dakota still managed to hold onto its title as the top honey producing state for the sixth year in a row. Euliss said his experience tells him that his workers prefer variety. `Ìt looks like in the landscapes that have greater diversity of flowers, bees do better,'' he said. Trucking hives with millions of bees from North Dakota to California for the almond crop pollination shouldn't be an issue, Spivak said. `Ègyptians transported bees down the Nile,'' she said. She's hoping to demonstrate that with good nutrition here, the honeybees will arrive in California healthier and better able to fend off parasites. ``They're important pollinators,'' she said. ``Many of our fruits and vegetables _ a lot of our diet _ is dependent on bee pollination.'' While in North Dakota, the researchers also plan to survey native bee abundance and diversity. They also play an important role in pollination. Around the world, Spivak said, scientists have identified about 20,000 types of bees. `Ìt concerns me deeply that our bees are in trouble and they're crying out for our help,'' she said. `Ànd they are in trouble for what we are doing _ the way we grow crops, the way we use pesticide.'' Beyond their productivity, she said, ``they're fascinating creatures.''
