This harvest season, farmers should remember to follow basic safety rules because they could save lives. When moisture is right, producers often will work for many hours, long into the night. While it is important to get in the crops, most farming accidents happen in the evening with fatalities peaking at 4 p.m. Workers need to remember to rest, eat and take all needed medications so that they are alert and do not make simple mistakes that could have horrible consequences. Working late also can have consequences because the sun sets sooner in the fall and darkness only increases the danger. Some of the most dangerous locations are on public roads. Use lighting, reflectors and slow-moving vehicle signs when driving farm equipment on the road. Warning

flashers should be used whenever a machine is operating or being driven on rural roads both day and night. Machine operators should always be aware of their surroundings and have a spotter when backing up, but these precautions are even more important at night. Always alert people where harvesting equipment will be used and avoid altering field harvesting plans without notifying others. Reading and following manufacturers' operation and maintenance recommendations also is important. Always lower the combine header to the ground, turn off the engine and remove the keys before per-

forming any service to the machine. Never clear a clogged harvester with the machine running. Always use approved support devices when working beneath headers or truck beds to ensure they will not accidentally fall down. If machines must be serviced in the field, take the time to clear debris and dust from all steps and platforms and wear shoes with solid, slip-resistant tread. The tapered plastic at the cutter bar allows greater sickle cutting width, while 17- and 13" staggered fingers allow crop flow into the header. “Peel & Stick” Engine Preheater The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. It is available in several models depending on the lube capacity. A 50 watt unit sells for $42 and a 350 watt unit sells for $133.

The patented STARR TRAK System has proven to tremendously increase floatation allowing the machine to roll more freely resulting in much shallower tracks. Not only does this system increase floatation, it also helps minimize rutting from soil erosion through its horizontal traction pattern which allows water to move to the outside of the track rather than centralizing water flow as do existing tire patterns. A new yoke design for standard towers as well as corner units, with a wide variety of tire sizes is now available. The gear box carries no weight. The result is a much stronger system complementing the current longer span, heavier machines. We continue to offer the original Starr Trak for 11.2x24 & 11.2x38 tires on lighter machines.

Report of the Effects of the FRE-FLO™ Soil Amendment Tool/Scale Prevention Equipment On Tomato Harvests - Summer 2010 WORTH FARMS – KETTLEMAN CITY, CA

Executive Summary Roma tomatoes grown with FRE-FLO™ treated water produced a larger and higher quality crop, compared to controls grown with untreated water. The increase came from two factors: a 23.9% increase in overall saleable yield, plus a more rapid ripening, which cut the quantity of unsaleable green tomatoes in half.

Detailed Report Samples of Roma tomatoes were harvested on Worth Farms on July 28, 2010 by Crop Production Services, Inc. For this test, two rows of the 140 acre field were irrigated by treated water that passed through a Model 125-075 (3/4 inch) FRE-FLO™ water conditioner. The rest of the field was irrigated normally (using the same water source, but not passed through the FRE-FLO™). Sample parts of each row (each equivalent to one 2000th of an acre) were completely harvested from both the FRE-FLO™ and control portions of the field. The red (saleable) and green (unsaleable) tomatoes were separated, weighed and spread on tarpaulins (see photos right).

The results were multiplied by the correct factor to correspond to tons per acre and are shown in the chart and table below.

The outcome is that the use of FRE-FLO™ increased the overall saleable crop yield by 23.9% (15.0 tons per acre). At the current wholesale price of $65 per ton, this yields $975.00 more revenue per acre or $136,500 more income for the entire 140 acre field. The project results show that the FRE-FLO™ tomato yield had a much higher percentage of ripe red saleable crop, with an increase of desirable brix (+0.4). Importantly, the FRE-FLO™ tomatoes were of better quality (note the very visible differences in the above photos).

Quality Forages that Make Sense

Where are biofuels going? By Sandra Hansen, The Scottsbluff Star-Herald In 2000, there was very little U.S. biofuels production, but government action brought a drastic turn around in less than a decade. The government influence began in 2005, and production exploded in 2007 and 2008. With ups and downs in Congress, and fluctuations in domestic and world markets, capacity has continued to climb, while production has faltered. According to Charlie Rife, PhD, of High Plains Crop Development, soybean is the crop to watch. All other oil seeds lag behind in production and probably will never reach competition levels with soybeans. "The biofuels industry in the United States will not grow on soybeans," Rife said. He explained that soybeans are 18 percent oil, and 82 percent meal. He said the glut of meal in the market would drive the value down significantly. As it is, there is so much soy meal available, that to maintain some balance, a large export market has been created. In a June 2009 report, the National Biodiesel Board showed 173 facilities were producing 2.7 million gallons of fuel a year. Another 29 facilities were under construction. If they all come on line, they

could add almost 500 million gallons a year. "Our capacity could utilize 100 percent of the crush, but we can't get rid of the meal," Rife said. When it comes to biofuel feed stocks, Rife said U.S. producers look for the cheapest source they can find. That is soybean. There are smaller units that take used cooking oil, tallow, palm and other obscure sources. This leads to "home brew" operators who take the odd sources and make their biofuels in the garage. Rife said these people need to be aware that although their sources produce "really good energy," they need to be careful about what lives in the mix. "You can get some really bad bacteria," Rife cautioned. As for other oil seed sources, Rife said potential crops are out there. Research continues on camelina, which would fit well into a wheat, fallow rotation. Other possible sources include algae and distillers grains. Rife said algae would be a very labor intensive option. Distiller's grains are 15 percent oil, which could be a good added value for the byproduct. "There is a lot of potential there," Rife said. "There is a lot of cellulose in corn distillers grain, but they aren't there yet."

Prepare Grain Bins Now, Avoid Harvest Problems Harvest time is just around the corner and on time despite some delayed planting due to spring rains, so corn producers should start preparing their grain bins and equipment now to avoid problems at harvest. Once a bin is emptied, storage insects can survive on grain dust, broken kernels and any grain left in the bin, so it is important to thoroughly clean the bin prior to harvest to remove the food source the insects survive on until the next harvest. Cleaning should occur at least 30 days before the anticipated start of harvest. Make sure to clean the combine, grain carts, trucks and augers as well because they can be harboring places for insects and mold spores, too. Watch the areas around the grain bin, too. Get rid of tall weeds and old equipment that may be around the grain bin because rodents use those places for shelter against predators. Rodents, especially mice, could affect electrical equipment and controls as well. Given the opportunity, mice will invade electrical boxes because there they are safe from predators. They strip insulation off of wiring for nest material, their urine causes corrosion on connections and relays. Mice can squeeze through gaps as small as 3/8 inch.

Replace missing knockouts and replace or tighten conduit. A bin of corn with 19 percent moisture content in 75 degrees can lose a full market grade in about five days if the aeration system shuts down, allowing the grain to heat. These precautions should minimize costly downtime during the critical grain drying period. Consider putting more gravel or rock on travel lanes at the bin site if needed because it isn't always possible to wait for the soil to dry to load or unload grain bins. Having enough gravel or rock is essential to support the grain bin weight. Also, be aware of bin foundations. A 9,000 bushel grain bin holds nearly a half million pounds of corn when the bin is full, and that isn't counting the weight of the cement pad or the bin itself. Producers should pay attention to see if rats, badgers, groundhogs and other burrowing animals are digging tunnels under the pad. If so, use baits or traps to clean up spilled grain as soon as possible to control the population and minimize burrowing, which can crack the concrete pad. Control Musk Thistle in the Fall Pastures and rangelands can develop serious musk thistle infestations that can prevent forage growth and discourage livestock from grazing. Producers with a management plan that combines cultural, mechanical, chemical and biological control methods can help discourage the establishment and seed production of musk thistle. Fall herbicide application in October and early November is preferred because it will be less harmful to biological control agents and will kill a high percentage of plants when combined with the effects of winter. Milestone, ForeFront, Tordon 22K and Grazon are among the most effective herbicides. Combining dicamba with 2,4-D also offers good control while weather is still warm. Be sure to follow all label instructions, spray herbicides on time and be careful to avoid damaging woody plants, including trees. Maintaining desirable plants that are vigorous and competitive is the first cultural step to preventing musk thistle infestation. A well-managed pasture produces more forage and prevents weed establishment. Research

has shown that musk thistle growing in an area without surrounding vegetation produces 10 times as many flowering heads and grows almost twice as tall as thistle in an average pasture. Excess soil fertility also encourages thistle growth, so use fertilizer only when needed and at rates based on soil tests. Allowing goats, horses and other species to graze on musk thistle helps to control plants that cattle do not like to eat. Prescribed burning does not directly control musk thistle, but it can make other control methods more effective. Burn at the proper time for the grasses in the pasture and apply herbicide 10 to 14 days after the thistles have recovered and are regrowing. Mechanical control methods like hand digging, cutting, head mowing and shredding are effective after musk thistle has reached the bud or bloom stage. Hand cutting thistle plants 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface is a cost-effective way to remove scattered plants. Flowering heads that are removed should be placed in a closed container and either burned or allowed to rot to destroy

seeds. Mowing or shredding in the earlyboom stage will also stop seed production. Mowing is preferred to shredding because it is less likely to harm any musk thistle seed pupae. Introducing live organisms that are natural enemies of musk thistle is a great way to control the weed. The musk thistle head weevil, the musk thistle rosette weevil, the musk thistle tortoise beetle and rust fungus are four biological agents used against musk thistle in Nebraska. Only the head weevil is well-established across the state. Biological controls suppress musk thistle growth but do not kill the host plant. Landowners interested in using biological musk thistle control method should contact their county Noxious Weed Control Authority. Some Nebraska Farmers Take a Shine to Sunflowers By Chris Dunker, Beatrice Daily Sun Three months ago, little was left standing in green fields of corn and soybeans south of Adams _ victims of a Father's Day hailstorm many said was the most severe seen in the region. Today, those barren fields have been replanted and are growing with soybeans, corn and dotted with bobbing yellow heads of sunflowers. Sunflowers are not a stranger to southeast Nebraska, Gage County Extension educator Paul Hay said many farmers will plant sunflowers after harvesting the winter wheat crop in late June. Hay said sunflowers from southeast Nebraska are harvested for their oil as well as for use in birdseed. In addition to being a second crop after a wheat harvest, sunflowers offer insurance. ``They are a reliable backup if something goes wrong,'' Hay said. With June's violent hailstorm dropping large hail over a swath of land three to five miles wide between Cortland and Humboldt, the sunflower contingency became a reality for some farmers. Doug Parde, who experienced the devastation along with a number of other farmers between Adams and Filley, said he replanted some corn and beans, but also experimented

with sunflowers. ``I saw some neighbors do it, and I was pretty comfortable it was going to make a crop,'' Parde said. Planting sunflowers in that field made sense, Parde said, both from a standpoint of producing a crop that would go to harvest as well as a crop to prepare the soil for next year's planting. ``Because of the soil type, soybeans wouldn't get as tall on that hill being planted that late in the year,'' Parde explained. Also, the sunflower's root structure breaks up compaction and loosens the soil, allowing air and water to mix in and prepare it for next year, he said. Parde said he knew another area farmer, Roger Gronewold, who regularly planted sunflowers in the past, so he knew it was a possibility in Gage County. Gronewold said he planted sunflowers after harvesting his wheat for a number of years while the price of wheat was high. Gronewold said he usually waited to plant sunflowers until July 10 _ a date both Parde and Hay echoed. ``If you plant them earlier than that, you'll have to spray them for head moth,'' Gronewold said. ``Since I got completely hailed off here, I planted some the 10th of July. They look good, it just depends on if the frost holds off.''

`Ìt will be the last crop you harvest, with some being harvested into the mid-November period,'' Hay said. `Ìt takes that long for the plant to dry down to the point where you can harvest it.'' ``The preferable harvest method would be to use a row crop header, but you can use a platform header like you harvest wheat with on the combine,'' Hay said. Parde agreed, saying he will use a row crop header to harvest his sunflower field. Also, the marketing opportunities for sunflowers are not immediately available in southeast Nebraska, Hay said. The closest market for sunflower seeds is in northeastern Kansas. Parde said trucking sunflowers to Belleville, Kan., is not as big of an undertaking as it once was. Gronewold said he expects to collect as much as 1,500 pounds over the 80 acres of sunflowers planted in July. ``They're beautiful right now,'' Parde said. ``Several people want to stop by and take pictures.'' Looking back on the experience so far, Parde said, he has enjoyed diversifying his crop. He has helped other farmers harvest sunflowers before, but he's never grown them himself. `Ìt's been a learning experience for me,'' Parde said.

A limited number of 4-H members have the opportunity to catch a calf each January during the National Western Stock Show held in Denver, Colorado. Successful catchers will receive their calf in May 2011 to begin feeding the calf to market finish. Youth must show and sell their calf at the 2012 National Western Stock Show. The calves used for this contest are bought with money donated by business sponsors. However, any 4-H member who has previously caught a calf in the 4-H Catch-A-Calf Contest is not eligible to apply. 4-H members may obtain applications from county UNL-Extension offices. To apply, applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of December 31, 2010 and must be enrolled in 4-H at the time of application. Applicants must have parental consent as well as Extension Educator consent in order to submit an application.

Rick Krause, the group's senior director of congressional relations, said there's no effective and economical way for farmers to reduce dust levels. He said it's wrong to lump farm dust in with industrial pollution and car fumes. Tamara Thies, chief environmental counsel for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, said tougher rules would penalize agricultural areas, particularly those in more arid regions where dust is a nearly constant presence. ``When you get out into the agricultural areas of this country what you have is dust _ dust is a part of doing business. And most of rural dust is just dust,'' she said. Oklahoma cattle rancher Jason Hitch, who owns and operates his family's 12,000-acre ranch near the Panhandle town of Guymon with his brother Chris, said dust permeates everything in the wind-swept, semiarid region where many roads are packed dirt. It gets in his eyes, mouth and nose, but Hitch said he's so accustomed to it he hardly notices. Hitch Ranch, a fifth-generation operation that also includes hogs and crops, is buffeted by relentless winds and gets only about 16 inches of precipitation a year. Hitch said it would be prohibitively expensive and impractical for his workers, for example, to dampen the soil while farming to reduce dust levels. Hitch thinks federal officials just don't understand life on the Great Plains. ``We spend a lot of time cussing and discussing what goes on in Washington and what they come up with. We don't feel like they're very much in touch with production agriculture,'' he said.

As they begin the fall harvest, wary farmers are watching a federal debate over whether to clamp down on one of rural life's constant companions _ the dust clouds that farm machinery kick up in fields and along unpaved roads. Farming groups have urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to retain its current standards for dust, soot and other microscopic particles, arguing that tighter restrictions would be unworkable and that dust isn't a real pollutant. Grain farmer Charles Schmitt, who farms about 2,000 acres of corn and soybeans near the southwestern Indiana town of Haubstadt, called the possibility of tougher rules on dust ``ridiculous.'' The 59-year-old, who's farmed for more than four decades, said there's little farmers can do to reduce dust, especially after a dry summer like this year's that left his fields parched. ``Mother Nature has more to do with it than we do _ there's going to be dust and dirt no matter what,'' Schmitt said. The EPA is reviewing its airborne pollutant standards, as required every five years under the Clean Air Act. It's looking both at its standards for tiny particles of industrial pollution, and slightly larger particles called ``coarse particulate matter'' that include dust. Supporters of tougher restrictions said they're needed to help clear the air of tiny grains that can lodge deep in the lungs, worsening heart and respiratory problems. But farming and livestock groups and some lawmakers call those risks overstated. They argue that tighter rules could hurt rural areas, which they fear might exceed new limits and be required to implement plans to reduce dust. In July, nearly two dozen senators from farm states urged EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson in a joint letter to keep in place the current particulate standards, approved in 2006.

Tougher standards, their letter warned, would result in ``extremely burdensome'' dust control measures to bring regions into compliance and ``could slow economic development and impose significant cost to farmers and businesses.'' The American Lung Association has urged the EPA to adopt stricter limits. The group maintains that officials could reduce dust, from paving gravel roads to encouraging farmers to grow more of their crops using notill approaches that reduce the need for tractor work. Janice Nolen, the group's assistant vice president for national policy and advocacy, said the agricultural industry's claims mirror those other industries raised when they faced EPA restrictions. ``Every industry that sees that they're going to have to clean up have had the same concerns and we've seen time and again where they were able to figure out a solution,'' she said. Nolen said it's not just loose soil that blows around and off farms _ the particles also include diesel exhaust from farm machinery, animal waste and herbicides and insecticides. The EPA's scientific advisers told the agency this summer that the agency could better protect public health by replacing the existing standard of 150 micrograms of coarse particles per cubic meter with a standard between 65 and 85 micrograms per cubic meter. The agency is expected to release a final document next month spelling out its options for revising the standards. The EPA plans to announce any proposed changes in February, and will likely approve a final updated rule by October 2011. The agency would then determine which areas of the nation don't meet those new standards. The EPA said in a statement that it is ``committed to issuing air quality standards for particle pollution that are scientifically sound.'' But the American Farm Bureau Federation contends there's no scientific evidence sup-

Family and educational activities at the Qwest this year -- all free -- include new exhibits and returning favorites. The Sustain Your World, Family Farm to Fork and NASA exhibits are new additions, while the popular Animal Zone, Agventureland and Giddy Up Gulch are repeat features. Other popular returning activities are Edgerton Explore It and the Ag Magic Show. With the exception of specific shows, the exhibits are available from opening to closing time each day. The goal -- besides fun -- is to get children thinking about agriculture, said Beth Greiner, president of the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation. "One of the core missions of this event is to educate families on the importance of our heritage and how agriculture plays a role in our lives," she said. "We try to create new opportunities each year so those in both the urban and rural public can touch what a farm atmosphere is like." Though organizers don't tally how many people visit the family and educational exhibits, they do know that about 98,000 people attend the entire rodeo and stock show event, Greiner said. About 2,200 of those attendees are thirdand fourth-graders visiting on school field trips.Children can see -- and maybe even smell -- what farm life is like when they visit the Animal Zone on the Qwest Center's lower level. Baby animals are the big draw, and this year's group will include piglets, chicks, puppies and kittens. If the timing works out, visitors may even get to see a pig giving birth. They also can get an up-close view of goats, sheep and cattle. At the new Family Farm to Fork exhibit, visitors will get a chance to meet local farmers and learn more about farm life in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. A Myth Busters area tests common knowledge. Displays remind children where

food originates. Agventureland continues the theme. Children play at being a farmer, harvesting corn and soybeans and gathering eggs and milk. They "sell" the products and use the proceeds to "buy" items at the store. Kids can test their new agricultural knowledge at the Ag Magic Show, which also features storytelling, music and juggling. Show times are 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday. The Sunday shows begin at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.Many children's activities are on the upper level, including the new Sustain Your World interactive exhibit. It includes eco-friendly tips on how to use less electricity and how to create biodegradable materials. The new NASA exhibit is there, too. It gives visitors a chance to touch a real space helmet and glove. Its displays provide details on space missions, as well as how astronauts eat and exercise in space. Science fun continues at the returning but expanded Edgerton Explore It exhibit, where children can learn about geometry and gauging distance.Building fans will enjoy Construction Junction, which is set up with digging toys, dump trucks and hard hats. Thousands of building blocks will keep children ages 2 to 10 occupied.Giddy Up Gulch is an Old West town designed for children ages 6 and older. It includes teepees, chuck wagon cooking, Wild West stores and a jail. Art projects allow children to transform themselves into cowboys, or they can mosey over to the Rodeo U area to dress as a rodeo queen or clown. Then it's time to learn to barrel race and rope calves. Children can contribute to the area's decor by leaving their mark on a big rodeo and stock show coloring mural.Things get plugged in at the IGX gaming area, with 20 screens featuring Wii, Playstation3 and X-Box 360 games. Kids can sign up to compete in Saturday's Guitar Hero contest from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a winning-prize pack valued at more than $100.
