Nebraska corn crop forecast to be a record

As producers get ready for the upcoming harvest, the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday forecast a record corn crop for Nebraska farmers.

Based on Sept. 1 conditions, USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Nebraska's corn crop is forecast at a record high 1.55 billion bushels, 2 percent above last month and 11 percent above last year.

According to USDA, the yield is forecast at a record

high 169 bushels per acre, three bushels above last month's forecast, six bushels above last year, and three bushels above the previous high set in 2004. Acres to be harvested for grain, at 9.15 million, are up 7 percent from a year ago.

"There should be no question that farmers are not only good at what they do, but that they are doing it better each and every year," said Don Hutchens, executive director the Nebraska Corn Board.

He said farmers in Nebraska

and across the country are producing more bushels from the same acre of land than ever before.

"In the process, they are using fewer resources and doing it in an environmentally responsible way," Hutchens said.

Nationwide, corn production is forecast at 13 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last month's forecast and 7 percent higher than 2008.

acre, up 2.4 bushels from August's forecast and eight bushels above last year.

If realized, this will be the highest yield on record and production will be the second largest, behind 2007.

According to the USDA, yield forecasts increased from last month across the western Corn Belt and the northern half of the Great Plains as mild temperatures and adequate soil moisture supplies provided favorable growing conditions.

Nationwide, soybean production is forecast at a record high 3.25 billion bushels, up 1 percent from the August forecast and up 10 percent from last year.

Based on Sept. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 42.3 bushels per acre, up

0.6 bushel from last month's forecast and up 2.7 bushels from 2008.

If realized, the USDA said this will be the third highest yield on record.

Sorghum production in Nebraska is forecast at 14.9 million bushels, unchanged from the August forecast but down 22 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 90 bushels per acre, unchanged from the previous month's forecast but a bushel below last year. Acres for harvest, at 165,000, are unchanged from last month but 45,000 below 2008.

Rains stall winter wheat seeding in Great Plains

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Widespread rains across parts of the Great Plains have stalled winter wheat seeding, fueling anxiety at a time of bountiful global stockpiles and plummeting prices.

Few farmers are as anxious to get into fields as those in Kansas, by far the nation's largest winter wheat grower with 8.5 million acres planted last season.

But muddy fields have kept Kansas farmers from planting much this fall with just 9 percent of the wheat seed now in the ground, the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday. Normally by this late in the year, 17 percent has been planted in the state.

Kansas and Oklahoma were the top two wheat producers last year. In Oklahoma, just 17 percent has been seeded compared to the normal 25 percent so late in the season, NASS said.

"Moisture is good to have, but in some areas it is concerning. Too much moisture hasn't allowed guys to get into fields," said Justin Gilpin, executive director of Kansas Wheat, a joint venture of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and Kansas Wheat Commission.

The rain is not only delaying wheat planting in the state, but also stalling fall harvest of crops like soybeans. That could ultimately affect the acres planted for the 2010 crop 240 Seed Express

In Texas, farmers have 32 percent of their wheat fields seeded, while Nebraska has 56 percent planted. South Dakota growers have half their wheat acreage seeded.

It is uncertain this early in the planting season how much of the nation's acreage will be planted into winter wheat or what effect the unusually wet fall may have on planting decisions.

"We are likely to see quite a bit of wheat planted in Kansas even though prices are terrible right now," said Mike Woolverton, a grain marketing economist at Kansas State University.

COLUMBIA, Mo. –Missourians are breaking out fall sweaters early as one of the coolest summers on record wraps up.

Preliminary numbers across the state indicate the 2009 three-month summer period will rank among the 15 coolest on record and may crack the top 10, said University of Missouri Extension climatologist Pat Guinan.

“A northwest-flow upper-air pattern during much of July and parts of August dominated the Midwest,” he said. “This flow led to frequent cool-air intrusions from Canada and extended periods of below-normal temperatures across Missouri.”

Summer rain also was abundant, averaging above normal statewide in June, July and August.

“I cannot recollect two consecutive growing seasons in Missouri when essentially every county has been drought-free,” he said.

Sufficient moisture and cool temperatures over much of the summer mostly benefited agriculture, with the majority of the corn and soybean crops in good to excellent condition, according to the Missouri Agricultural Statistics Service.

Irrigation required for corn test plots also is lower this year, down at least 75 percent, said Tim Reinbott, superintendent of the Bradford Research and Extension Center, near Columbia. The cool weather has delayed corn maturing by as much as three weeks, he said.

There are some concerns about the potential for an early frost hurting late-planted crops, but cool summers do not increase the likelihood of an early fall frost, Guinan said.

As cool summer temperatures prevailed across the Midwest, record-warm ocean temperatures occurred in July and excessive heat afflicted the western U.S. and Texas.

Many farmers across the Great Plains who had planned to cut wheat acreage because of low prices have changed their minds in the past six weeks to take advantage of good moisture conditions.

"That is true in most of the Great Plains," Woolverton said. "Even Texas, where it has been just terribly dry, has been getting some thunderstorms out of all this activity and seen some moisture replenishment, and so I think we are going to see Texas plant more wheat than they might have otherwise."

Another unknown factor will be the impact on crop acreage of the 3.5 million-plus acres coming out this month from the Conservation Reserve Program, the program that pays farmers not to plant crops.

The majority of those former CRP acres are in the Great Plains wheat states. Kansas has 371,000 acres coming out of CRP, and some farmers are plowing those acres and planting wheat this fall, Woolverton said.

Also coming into play are huge carry-over wheat stocks globally. The 2008 wheat crop of 682 million metric tons was the biggest ever grown in the world, Woolverton said. That was followed by the 2009 wheat harvest that was better than expected.

All that wheat clogging the world markets has driven down wheat prices.

But Woolverton said that's not dissuading farmers from planting more wheat. If wheat prices sink too low, farmers can let livestock graze the crop come spring and replant something else.

"It doesn't make any sense logically with wheat prices low, but that is not what I am hearing from the field," he said. "If the moisture is there, they are going to take advantage of it and plant wheat."

because growers in central and eastern Kansas often double-crop winter wheat behind soybeans, Gilpin said.

Kansas farmers have a narrow window, optimally between Sept. 20 and Oct. 15, to get the crop into the ground in time to give it a chance to get rooted before winter sets in, said Bill Spiegel, a Kansas Wheat spokesman.

But winter wheat planting is just slightly behind the five-year average when the 18 top wheat-growing states are factored in. NASS reported that overall about 24 percent of the winter wheat has been planted, just slightly below the 25 percent average.

The patented STARR TRAK System has proven to tremendously increase floatation allowing the machine to roll more freely resulting in much shallower tracks. Not only does this system increase floatation, it also helps minimize rutting from soil erosion through its horizontal traction pattern which allows water to move to the outside of the track rather than centralizing water flow as do existing tire patterns. A new yoke design for standard towers as well as corner units, with a wide variety of tire sizes is now available. The gear box carries no weight. The result is a much stronger system complementing the current longer span, heavier machines. We continue to offer the original Starr Trak for 11.2x24 & 11.2x38 tires on lighter machines.

Agriculture continues to rank as one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States.

To spotlight safety in farming and ranching, the National Safety Council has designated September 20 - 26th as National Farm Safety and Health Week.

The theme for the event is “Rural Road Safely – Alert, Aware & Alive”. As the harvest season approaches and more farm vehicles share the roads with motor vehicles, all motorists must take steps to insure safe roads.

BE ALERT – According to Tom Bean in his “Boosting Visibility of Ag Equipment” Fact Sheet (AEX-598-08), “It sounds like a word problem straight out of a school math book: If a car is traveling 55 mph and a tractor is traveling 15 mph, how long does it take for the car to make up the 400-foot distance between them? The answer is 7 seconds. . .”

Not much time if a driver is caught unaware.

The solution is 2-fold: Farm machinery operators need to be certain their warning systems are in place and working.

That includes SMV (slow-moving vehicle) emblems being clean and at the proper heights and warning lights working and in use. Motorists need to take the initiative and drive defensively, not assuming they are visible to a machinery operator.

BE AWARE – As farm sizes increase, so do the sizes of equipment used. Motorists in rural areas need to be aware of the special handling required for large equipment.

For example, don’t assume that a farmer pulling to the right side of the road is going to make a right-hand turn.

Due to the size of his equipment, he must move right to make a left turn.

Passing can be a problem as well, especially on narrow roads. Both motorists and machinery operators need to be aware of the

limitations and pull over when possible to let the other pass.

Similarly, narrow bridges and gravel roads can be dangerous places for motor vehicles and farm equipment to meet. Operators of both vehicles need to give space to the other.

BE ALIVE – Patience goes a long way on rural roadways! Put yourself in the other person’s spot, then make a decision on what maneuver is safe and what is not.

Keep a safe distance; give yourself plenty of time and space to meet, pass or follow another vehicle. Remember that gravel and other rural roads have their own set of hazards.

Steep ditches, soft shoulders, wet surfaces, blind intersections and other situations may all contribute to dangerous situations on the road. Take the time to be safe on rural roads.

Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the number one killer in many states, Nebraska included. Sadly, many crashes are preventable and nearly all farm equipment/motor vehicle crashes did not need to happen.

During National Farm Safety and Health Week – 2009, make it your priority to BE ALERT to the increased traffic and dangers, BEcome AWARE of the hazards of rural roads and BE ALIVE for another season.
