Rotor loss in Corn, Soybeans & Wheat on all John Deere STS & the new S series combines happens because of an over-loaded separation section.

C M Welding Inc introduced “The Disrupter� (14 lugs bolted into the two front separation grates) in the summer of 2010 and the response was tremendous. (Disrupter lugs cut up corn shucks, green bean stems, & wheat straw). We have over 1700 sets in operation, but the rotor loss problem still exists with all STS & new S series machines when ground speed is increased. The rear concave in John Deere Rotor machines is not large enough nor open enough to get crop through without sacrificing a lot of ground speed. Corn, soybeans & wheat thrash completely over the first 1 &1/ 2 round bar concaves, but very little separation will happen over the back half of the concave sections due to the small space (5/8 “) between the remaining round bars.

C M Welding Inc. has designed a concave/grate that has 1/2 “sq bars with 1 Âźâ€? opening between. The new concave/grate will replace the rear concave on all of the STS & S series machines. The ½â€? Square bars plus the 1 Âź space between the bars will increase material volume flow by 68%. The more crop volume you can get out of the concave section, the less has to be separated over the grate section.

Brewing is such an agriculturally dependent industry that I felt like it was necessary to kind of get these budding stars in the agriculture community some exposure.”

ACRES has a number of other collaborations with local restaurants and enterprises, Curran said, including with the Crowbar and Grill, Washakie Dining Services and more. The farm also sells Community-Supported Agriculture bushels to 15 members in Laramie.

“We'd love to continue doing things like this within the community, either growing our [Community-Supported Agriculture] numbers or branching out with more local merchants,” Curran said.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — For roughly 100 days, the pumpkins grew, but they never got big.

That’s a good thing, University of Wyoming ACRES Student Farm volunteer Michael Curran said. What Pam Pumpkins lack in size, they more than make up in flavor, which will help make for good pumpkin ale at Altitude Chophouse and Brewery this fall.

“It's going to be exciting,” Curran said.

“We definitely put in a lot of hard work not just myself but everyone at the farm into taking care of these pumpkins, and it's exciting the whole community, everyone who goes to Altitude will know it came from the farm.”

Altitude brewer Nathan Venner explained that the idea for collaboration with the student farm was brewed up like many things, at the restaurant.

“A lot of great ideas happen around beer.

I think that pubs are places where a lot of different people with different resources in a community can get together and share

their knowledge and resources with one another,” he said.

For Venner, the problem was how to incorporate more flavorful pumpkins into the brewery's seasonal fall pumpkin ale.

“These small little pumpkins like this, they've got a higher sugar content so they lend a lot more pumpkin flavor to a beer,” he said. “You can get more flesh out of a larger pumpkin, but they taste a lot more like squash.”

Curran said he volunteered the services of ACRES, which has continued to promote community collaboration and sustainability wherever possible.

“The biggest thing ACRES is trying to do is really push and try to work on our local food movement. Through composting, we have a relationship with a lot of restaurants and the university, and I think what we're trying to promote is community agriculture and growing and sharing locally and kind of working together with our local vendors within the community,” he said.

On Oct. 1, ACRES volunteer efforts and Venner's brewing came to fruition with the release of ACRES Pumpkin Ale.

SD Group Works to Highlight Historic Cattle Trail

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has extended the comment period on proposals by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to change regulations of livestock operations to be in compliance with the federal Clean Water Act. The Des Moines Register says the EPA has extended the period by two weeks, until Oct. 31.

In July, the EPA said Iowa's program is not sufficient to assess whether livestock confinements need to obtain federal waste discharge permits. It also says Iowa's inspection program is inadequate and the state failed to act in nearly half of the water quality violation cases against cattle farms that the EPA reviewed.

The report was done in response to a petition filed in 2007 by three environmental groups that alleged Iowa fell far short of meeting enforcement requirements.

SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — Generations of families in several states can probably trace their heritage back to the late 1800s, when droves of cowboys and their cattle settled in the area after making the long, arduous trek on the Great Western Cattle Trail.

The trail starts in South Texas and ends in Canada. It travels through nine states, all of which are working to revive the trail by placing white concrete markers along its path and using them to enhance tourism.

Once the cowboys and their herds arrived in the Whitewood area of the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota, they could either go north toward the railroad shipping point in Belle Fourche, or northwest through Centennial Valley, where pastures rich with nutritious grass and clear water awaited them.

Because of the trail's history and overall significance during that time, the High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish recently installed a trail marker.

“We want to place the markers where historical information is available; that's why it's here” center Director Peggy Ables said.

“You can't really follow the exact trail, so the locations for future markers will be determined by a committee.”

Getting the marker installed in September was a milestone in a long journey that started in the spring of 2011, when Ables and Betty Olson, a Prairie City native who works as a state legislator, attended a national meeting of the Great Western Cattle Trail Association held at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora, N.D. A marker and information plaque on that building’s grounds tells the story of the overall trail and North Dakota's route.

While there, they met with representatives from all nine participating states. They returned home motivated to begin the process of establishing a South Dakota Chapter of the National Great Western Cattle Trail Association.

Mountain Lion Euthanized After Killing Five Sheep CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) — Wildlife officials say they have euthanized a mountain lion that was responsible for killing five sheep near Cortez in southwestern Colorado.

Joe Lewandowski, a spokesman for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, tells The Cortez Journal a dead sheep was used as bait, and the mountain lion was trapped and euthanized Thursday. He added that the lion was an older 100-pound female and likely would have gone after other livestock or pets if allowed to remain in the wild.

Jay Spinney says he was surprised when he saw the mountain lion devouring one of his sheep Wednesday and noticed there were another four sheep that had already been killed by the predator.

Immediately, they received feedback from several individuals interested in helping to achieve the goal. In addition to Olson, who is president, and Ables, who is secretary, the association officers consist of Tom Davis, of Belle Fourche, as vice president and Mary Buchholz, of Belle Fourche, as treasurer.

Ables said everyone stepped up to the plate, especially Olson.

“She has been an excellent leader,” Ables said. “She knows people and knows how to get things done.”

Olson said she invests her time in the project because she cares about preserving western heritage at its best.

“This trail is integral to western South Dakota,” Olson said. “There are generations of families here because their ancestors came up on the trail.”

As for how many markers the association plans to install, Olson said this is just the beginning of their efforts.

“There will be more; it’s just a matter of where to put them at this point,” she said.

Once the markers are installed, Ables said, the ultimate goal is to create a tourism map that includes GPS coordinates of each marker, so visitors can closely follow the trail and learn the history.

Summit Focuses on Agriculture’s Impact on Health WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — An all-day summit will focus on the influence of agriculture on Kansans' health.

The Kansas Rural Center is coordinating the Nov. 16 event in Topeka. It aims to attract people who want to learn more about how Kansas health, agriculture and food environments intersect.

The event is called “Healthy Farms, Healthy People: Agriculture and the Health Care Summit.”

Sessions are planned on healthy eating behaviors, farming in Kansas, the role of food and farm policy, and challenges in producing healthy food.

Other entities involved in the meeting include the Kansas Health Institute, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Farmers Union and others.
