“Peel & Stick” Engine Preheater The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. It is available in several models depending on the lube capacity. A 50 watt unit sells for $42 and a 350 watt unit sells for $133.

New Wells Will Be Limited for 2nd Year in NE Nebraska NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — Landowners in several northeast Nebraska natural resources districts won't be able to drill new irrigation wells next year because of groundwater concerns.

The Norfolk Daily News reports that the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District decided to ban new wells unless they fit one specific exception.

The only new wells allowed will be ones where landowners apply for permission to irrigate up to 10 acres to complete a full circle for pivot irrigation.

The Lower Loup and Upper Elkhorn Natural Resources Districts had already decided not to allow any new wells next year.

And the Lower Niobrara NRD has issued a 180-day moratorium on wells.

NOWATA, Okla. (AP) — Ranchers in northeast Oklahoma's Nowata County say someone has been shooting their livestock, costing them thousands of dollars, and even shot a girl's pet llama.

Seven cows, in addition to other livestock, have been shot and killed during the past two months. In the most recent attack rancher Jarad Collins’ Black Angus cow, worth an estimated $2,000, was killed.

“I don't know why someone would do something like that,” Collins told KOTV. “I've tried to come up with a logical reason, and I just can't come up with one.”

Among the animals that have been killed were a young girl's pet llama, Sheriff James Hallet said.

Eric Epperson said his 12-year-old son’s first calf was also killed.

“It's really tough to explain to a 12-year-old what happened,” Epperson said.

“We try to teach him responsibility, just like it has been all through the generations.

Had him go out and borrow his own money, purchase his own cattle and make that payment back,” he said.

Collins said he has been in the ranching business about five years and has 50 head of cattle.

“It's been a struggle. To start out, we had the snow, the first year. Now we've had the drought for the last three years. We're coming out of that, and now this,” Collins said.

Two Cases of Equine Herpes Found in NW Wyoming CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Two cases of the neurologic form of Equine Herpes Virus Type 1 have been discovered in northwestern Wyoming.

The Wyoming Livestock Board reports that that a total of seven horses in Teton and Park counties were affected by the disease.

One horse had to be euthanized, while the remaining horses were placed under quarantine.

State veterinarians have determined that the two incidents are unrelated, and no new cases have been reported in the two counties.

The Equine Herpes virus is highly contagious, but the neurological form of it is rare. It appears suddenly and is usually rapidly progressing. The disease typically causes horses to develop a fever, lose control of their extremities and can result in death.

Sisters use Family Farm to Teach Kansas Students LINDSBORG, Kan. (AP) — Two sisters in central Kansas have turned their family farm into a classroom aimed at helping urban and even rural students learn just where their food comes from.

Laura Mourn and Angie Flippo spent much of their childhood on their family's farm south of Lindsborg, property that has been in the family for more than 100 years. The seeds they are planting are designed to clear up misconceptions among students who have little idea of how food gets from the field to the store to their tables.

“It's neat to have them tell us where it comes from and help them think through it together. You see a light bulb come on,” Flippo told the Salina Journal.

Some of the misunderstandings about animals have included students thinking that cows lay eggs or that they hibernate.

“That was eye-opening,” Mourn said.

Children visiting the farm tour the grounds, feeding chickens, playing in bathtubs filled with grain, riding a train or sliding on a hay-covered slope.

“We learned about pumpkins and animals and that animal poop is good for plants,” said Wyatt Somers, a student at McPherson’s Lincoln Elementary School, during a recent visit. “It's fun.”

The sisters realized that not everyone sees agriculture the same way or understands how it all fits, a problem not just for city students but those in rural communities, too.

“This is a future voting bloc,” Mourn said.

Melissa Beede, a teacher from Lincoln Elementary, said farm fields are common around McPherson, but she finds that students don't know much about agriculture and what the industry provides.

“Dogs and cats are found on a farm, but just as in the city, they're pets,” Beede said.

Cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, pigs and other critters provide food, such as milk, eggs and meat.

“Some kids truly don't know where meat comes from. They say, ‘We go to the store to get our meat.’”

Flippo and Mourn's parents started offering tourist trips to the farm five years ago. Flippo said teachers started asking about ways to make the trips more educational, prompting the sisters to write their “In the Class and on the Farm” curriculum, which follows state and federal education standards.

The program was piloted in 2011 with McPherson students and was eventually expanded across the school district.

Sponsorships from agriculture businesses and organizations help finance the program.

Nine second-grade classes from McPherson and one from Elyria participated this fall.

Students start the curriculum in the classroom to prepare for the visit to the farm, which is more than petting animals and playing in dirt.

“This is a very good educational program,” Beede said.

The program incorporates traditional classroom subjects to help students understand what farmers and ranchers do daily, including reading and language arts.

“We talk about being an advocate, someone who speaks out for agriculture and shows other people how important that is,” Flippo said. “It's sort of like writing a persuasive paper.”

The sisters would like to expand the program to a spring session and open it to other age groups of students.

“We look at it as an investment in the future of America,” Flippo said.

Epperson said that with the increase in cattle prices, this was a perfect year for farmers to recoup some of their losses from previous years. But for the sixth-generation farmer, the impact of the shootings go beyond his pocket book.

“I would want him to talk to that 12-yearold boy. I want him ... or her to look that 12year-old boy in the eyes and say ‘I'm sorry,’” Epperson said.

E TIP, Inc. announces the availability of the Universal Low Watt Density (LWD) Preheater™ Kits for engines, transmissions, hydraulics, gear boxes, bulk oil tanks, reservoirs etc. These kit sizes are based on the capacity of the housing and the energy level needed for that volume.

Each thin, flexible silicone/fiberglass heating pad is designed to mount permanently to the outside bottom or side of the housing using a permanent Peel & Stick adhesive. A specialized, double thickness, flexible ceramic insulation pad is mounted on top of the LWD Universal Preheater™ helping to drive more heat into the housing while keeping the electrical energy draw low. The LWD Universal Preheater™ uses 1/3 (or more) less electrical power than conventional block heaters and in-line coolant heaters. The LWD Universal Preheater™ converts the metal of the housing into a heat transfer element eliminating the possibility of burning the oil by exposing a large square inch surface of oil to low watt heat.

There is no “coking” of the oil.

Integral to the Air Adjust system is the Yetter-exclusive Pneumatic Hydraulic Control Kit, which hooks into an existing or new hydraulic compressor to control air to the 2940 Series product line. This allows growers to adjust up and down pressure without leaving the cab. The Control Kit’s small dimensions, only 12” by 12” by 6”, make installation easy.

The LWD Universal Preheater™ is ideally suited to air-cooled engines because it can be mounted over most ribs, recessed bolt heads, etc. and more easily tolerates trapped air pockets without the risk of burn-out.

Efficiency of the Universal Preheater™ stays like new because there are no coils to clog from cooling system byproducts and no contaminants to impair performance. No drilling or welding is required as the Universal Preheater™ mounts to the outside of the housing using a permanent Peel & Stick adhesive. A typical installation takes from 15 minutes to 60 minutes for most applications. There is no risk of engine or hydraulic oil or coolant leaks because no system is invaded; the Preheater™ is mounted on the outside of the housing.

Typical engine oil temperatures achieved in the first hour of warming from 0q F. range up to +50q F. without burning the oil when sized as we recommend. When left energized 6 to 8 hours or longer it produces up to an estimated 100q F oil temperature. Repeated heating and cooling of the engine causes condensation to form inside the crankcase that ends up in the oil. The condensation contributes to the formation of acids in the oil when combined with the byproducts of combustion. That acid formation has been known to etch engine bearings contributing to a shortened engine life. When the Universal Preheater™ is continuously energized moisture is driven out of the oil. Continuous heating of the oil will not harm the oil or the Preheater™.
