Drought Dries Up Hay Production, Boosts Markets Lori Potter, The Kearney Hub KEARNEY, Neb. — Alfalfa growers share a big concern with all Nebraska ag producers, especially those with dryland fields and pastures. "The fate of the 2013 crop is entirely dependent on the weather," said Kearney farmer Tim Kelliher, who has been in the alfalfa business for years. He and other forage producers from around the country are at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds through
this afternoon at the 19th-annual Mid-America Alfalfa Expo & Conference conducted by the Nebraska Alfalfa Marketing Association. Kelliher said in 2002, the driest year during the most recent multiyear drought, he had a dryland alfalfa field. "That didn’t even make a first cutting," he said. Educator in Dawson County, said the verdict is still out for 2013, but Nebraska pastures clearly had some damage in 2012. Grass stopped growing well before it went dormant, which means producers may have to wait longer to put cattle into pastures this year and will reduce stocking rates. "Be prepared if the rains don't come," Treffer said. "If it rains, there still probably won’t be the production of past years." Continued on page 12
