Livestock News By Robert Pore, The Grand Island Independent The U.S. Department of Agriculture lowered the amount of corn stocks on hand to 675 million bushels on February 9th, due to increases in estimates for ethanol use and sweetner/starch use. While the USDA report will be a factor for rising corn prices, U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., said
ethanol critics will be sure to blame the use of corn for ethanol as the problem. But, he said, weather problems around the globe are creating shortages and impacting rising commodity prices, such as the ongoing drought in China. calling the country's drought a "potentially serious problem." According to FAO, the drought in China has been going on for four months and has impacted 35 percent of the country's wheat crop. FAO said 2.57 million people and 2.79 million head of livestock have faced shortages of drinking water.
