Cellulosic ethanol plant sited for Emmetsburg
The wind and snow-swept stack yard at the site of the planned POET biomass ethanol facility near Emmetsburg belies the technology and planning involved in its construction and the ongoing research being conducted there. When the plant is producing ethanol bales will be unloaded into the lanes, likely from semis. The yard can hold 22,000 tons of material. Project LIBERTY at Emmetsburg in Palo Alto County will be POET's first commercial-scale, cellulosic ethanol. A pilot plant in South Dakota has been in operation for two years, stated Jim Sturdevant, director of Project LIBERTY. The ethanol plant is planned for construction in 2011 and operation 15 to 16 months later. Project LIBERTY, Studevant continued, will go forward when financing is in place. A federal loan guarantee is presently in negotiation. He said, “The State of Iowa has been a wonderful partner.” Through the Iowa Powerfund Board and the Iowa Department of Economic Devlopment, the cellulosic ethanol project has received approximately $20 million in tax credits, refunds, and grants. “In addition to the financial benefits,” Studevant said, “they have been great ambassadors for cellulosic ethanol.” Creating ethanol from biomass such as corn crop residue is not altogether different than creating ethanol from corn or sugar cane. The first major step called pretreatment where the biomass is prepared for sugar extraction; then the material goes through fermentation and distillation into ethanol. A co-product of ethanol production from biomass is a material called lignin, which is process

through anaerobic digesters to produce renewable power, enough to run both the cellulosic ethanol plant and the adjacent grain-based ethanol plant.
This conceptual rendering of the POET ethanol plant at Emmetsburg shows the existing grain ethanol facility, POET Biorefining, and to the south east a planned facility with the capacity to make 25 million gallons of ethanol per year from biomass, in this case corn leaves, cobs, husks and the top part of the stalk. Also shown are the stack yards to feed the plant a constant stream of biomass. Photos by Emma Struve

POET operates a pilot-scale cellulosic ethanol plant today at the POET Research Center in Scotland, South Dakota. The idea behind creating the pilot cellulosic ethanol project in South Dakota and planning for Project LIBERTY in Emmetsburg, explained Sturdevant, “It was all about energy independence. We’re about creating a biofuel to replace gasoline…really make a dent in biofuels and kick our addiction to imported fuel.” He pointed out some of the benefits of ethanol: that it comes from a renewable, plant-based source and when burned for fuel has lower emissions than gasoline. “We are using agriculture to help solve the nation’s challenges,” Sturdevant continued. “It’s good for the economy and good for the environment.” The Renewable Fuels Standard, more than five years ago, established a volume mandate for the amount of renewable fuel required to be blended into transportation fuel. The program, as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, “encourag(ed) the development and expansion of our nation's renewable fuels sector.”

Iowa Pork Producers Association to hand out 2010 awards Seminars planned for Iowa Pork Congress Iowa’s responsible pork producers are constantly working to promote and protect the health and well-being of their animals and to produce safe, affordable food. Eleven of these producers will be recognized for their efforts by the Iowa Pork Producers Association on January 26. IPPA will formally introduce the 2010 producer award winners at the 39th annual Iowa Pork Congress Banquet at the Des Moines Marriott. The newest class of Master Pork Producers will be recognized during the banquet. The prestigious brass belt buckle will be given to eight producers from around Iowa for their attention to quality, efficiency, innovation and production records within their farming business. Recipients are nominated for the award by their peers and neighbors. The Master Seedstock Producer for 2010 will be named as well. This award is sponsored by the Iowa Purebred Swine Council and recognizes one individual who has demonstrated integrity, leadership and success in the production and promotion of the purebred swine industry. One of the banquet’s highlights will be the introduction of the 2010 Pork All-American. The recipient must be under the age of 40 and a Master
Pork Producer. This is the highest honor bestowed on a pork producer by the association. For the fourth year in a row, IPPA will name an Environmental Steward Award winner. This award has been presented since 2007 to a pork producer who has exceeded expectations in manure management, soil and water conservation, air quality strategies, wildlife habitat management and environmental management innovations. The winner receives a $500 cash award and becomes Iowa’s nominee for the National Pork Board’s national environmental steward award. IPPA will once again name two Honorary Master Pork Producers for their valuable contributions and efforts to enhance the success of the pork industry. The 2011 Iowa Pork Congress will take place at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines January 26 and 27. Business seminars and training sessions will also be a major draw for many of those attending the 2011 Iowa Pork Congress. The Iowa Pork Producers Association is offering several seminars and training/certification sessions designed to keep pork producers from Iowa and the Midwest in the know on the latest pork production practices and regulations. Registered participants can attend the sessions at no additional cost.
“IPPA staff always tries to cover the most pressing issues in pork production by offering seminars that address those issues,” said IPPA Iowa Pork Congress Committee Chairman Don Toale, a pork producer from Independence. “We bring in the most knowledgeable speakers to facilitate these sessions because we feel it’s very important to keep those involved in the pork industry informed.” Some of the seminar topics include environmental regulations and nuisance cases, legislative issues, foreign trade, genetics and PRRS. Iowan Jolene Brown will present the keynote address titled “When Pigs Fly.” Producers also can attend PQA Plus® and TQA® certification sessions. All seminars and training sessions are hosted on the lower level of HyVee Hall at the Iowa Events Center. All the seminars are funded by the Pork Checkoff. The Iowa Pork Congress is open to all pork producers, allied business partners and others involved in the pork industry. The 39th annual show will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 26 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 27 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Admission at the door is $10. For more information, contact the Iowa Pork Producers Association at 515-225-7675, 800-3727675 or visit www.iowaporkcongress.org.
Soy Transportation Coalition tours Panama Canal The board of directors of the Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) and other soybean industry leaders toured the Panama Canal in conjunction with the organization’s annual meeting on December 15 and 16. The purpose of the visit was to see firsthand the Panama Canal in operation as well as receive an update on the progress of the canal expansion project. "Soybean production is increasingly a global industry,” stated Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition. “The profitability of soybean farming is therefore not only dependent on supply and demand. It also depends on the logistics system that connects the two. The Panama Canal is a significant link in our global logistics chain that allows U.S. agriculture to remain competitive.” The group visited the Panama Canal lock chambers and witnessed a number of ocean vessels transit the canal. The group also met with officials from the Panama Canal Authority to discuss the importance of the canal to U.S. agricultural exports and to hear an update on the canal expansion project.
During the trip, the Soy Transportation Coalition group rode on the Panama Canal Railway from its station near the Pacific Ocean to its terminal near the Atlantic Ocean – a 50mile journey made in little over an hour. Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal is an important artery for the U.S. economy. Forty percent of the cargo that transits the canal originates in the United States. Twenty-seven percent is destined to the United States. Forty-two percent of U.S. grain exports transit the canal. Approximately 550 million bushels of soybeans were shipped through the canal in 2010 – the largest volume among U.S. agricultural commodities. www.iowafarmandranch.com www.iowafarmandranch.com www.iowafarmandranch.com www.iowafarmandranch.com www.iowafarmandranch.com www.iowafarmandranch.com www.iowafarmandranch.com

While much investment over the years has been allocated for canal operations and maintenance, the number and size of the lock chambers have remained the same since the canal’s opening. Currently many of the largest ocean vessels exceed the size of the canal locks. To maintain its role as a key artery for global commerce in the future, the Panama Canal Authority determined to expand the canal. The expansion project involves the construction of a new set of locks – doubling the size of ships able to transit the canal. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2014 at a cost of $5.2 billion.

Puck Custom Enterprises, Inc. honored with Venture Award The Iowa Area Development Group (IADG), on behalf of Iowa’s rural electric cooperatives and member municipal electric systems, honored eight distinguished Iowa companies with the Iowa Venture Award. The Iowa Venture Award is among the most enduring and prestigious business recognition events in Iowa. More than 180 of Iowa’s finest business leaders and companies have been recognized and honored since the program began in 1988. The Iowa Venture Award was presented to Puck Custom Enterprises, Inc., a home-grown Iowa company located on a farm south of the Manning community. Ben and Kathy Puck started their custom manure handling systems in the late 1970s. Over time the company began to make design improvements to their manure application equipment, which spurred growth and demand for their umbilical cord design spreader. The company has captured both national and international interest for their products and service. Puck Custom Enterprises was nominated for the Iowa Venture Award by Western Iowa Power Cooperative. “The Iowa Venture Award is highly regarded as a business achievement and recognition awards program with a strong history,” said IADB President Rand Fisher. “IADG has recognized Iowa’s leading companies, large and small, that have helped sustain and grow the Iowa economy. Fisher added, “Iowa Area Development Group on behalf of our sponsors is honored to recognize these outstanding companies that are investing in our state. Each year we honor business leaders and entrepreneurs with the Iowa Venture Award. Our luncheon ceremony allows our sponsors to thank these accomplished companies for their commitment to Iowa through innovation, investment and job creation. Since 1985 the economic development efforts of IADG and their sponsoring utilities have helped generate more than $5.6 billion dollars of capital investment and create or retain nearly 40,000 jobs for Iowa. The 2010 “Outstanding Business of the Year” Venture Award was presented to Hawkeye Pride Egg Farm in Corwith. The Hawkeye Pride project is located southeast of Corwith in Hancock County. Technology and time Each Christmas season brings with it the “got to have” gift of the year. This year, that seemed to be some type of ebook reader, as the three main companies reported bust out sales of their readers. Amazon’s e-reader, the Kindle, has become their number one best seller of all time. Barnes & Noble has also announced that their versions, the Nook and the Nook Color, is the company's biggest bestseller ever. Sony also makes a version, the Sony Reader. I had wanted a Kindle since they were introduced three years ago, but thought the technology should be further developed. I remember sitting in my journalism courses 20 years ago, talking about how books and newspapers were going to be delivered electronically in the future. I couldn’t wait for the technology, and honestly thought it would take longer then it did. When the Kindle 3 was announced, I knew that it was the right time to have one. I’ve never had the “it” present in my life, and I knew that my husband’s “last minute” farmer method of shopping for Christmas presents would not bode well for me, especially since it looked to
be a popular gift and could possibly sell out. So, I set up a rather clever marking campaign with my husband for a Kindle, beginning in the fall when the Kindle 3 was announced. First, I emailed my dear husband each day, each with different aspects of what the Kindle could do. I did this for about two weeks before switching to an everyother-day email for another couple of weeks. Finally, I found a full page ad for the Kindle 3 which I ripped out and taped to his office door. Unfortunately, my dear husband isn’t good with surprises for the most part. He’s only surprised me a handful of times in the 16 years we’ve been married. He had the Kindle mailed to our home address. But I was VERY happy to see it in the mailbox when it arrived! I very quickly gave it to my 12-yearold son and told him that we were going to pretend that he got the mail that day so my husband would think I didn’t see it. That may have worked, but a couple weeks later they both went to Scout camp and my husband left a second box containing the cover he had ordered on the kitchen counter. I

THE
FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch last five years put together! Each time I’m still amazed at the technology that we only dreamed about 20 years ago. I shared this with a lady in her 80s last weekend when I was doing “show and tell” with my Kindle. She remembered when she was younger that people said families would have “the movies” in their own homes at some point. She thought that would just be silly, to have a movie in a small box in the house. Just a few years after that prediction, televisions made their debut. I also remember my grandfather regaling me with stories of two-

put it in his office, and hoped that he didn’t remember he left it on the counter so he could still think he would surprise me. So, I knew that I was getting a Kindle, and a cover, but I didn’t know which type of color. It was driving me crazy! Christmas morning, my son and husband made a big deal out of making sure that I opened the Kindle before the cover. Unfortunately, they gave me the cover first. My husband seemed a bit disappointed, but I spilled the beans and told him that I already knew about it, and how. I then suggested several alternatives to being able to surprise me, including mailing things to my parents’ house, his mother’s house or a friend’s house. I found out later in the day that he had indeed used alternate shipping methods, as I opened a couple more presents at my parents house where he had them shipped. Turns out he could surprise me after all. Since Christmas, I’ve downloaded many free classics, and have already finished a couple books. By the time you read this, I’ll probably have finished another. That’s more reading in a few weeks than the
row corn pickers with the belts running up each side of the tractor into the catch wagon. The corn then had to be shelled using another machine. The technological development of the combine was incredible to him. One of my regrets is that I was never able to get him up to ride in a combine before he died. I bet he would have loved it! I wonder what other kinds of advancements in technology and farming will occur in the next 10, 20, or even 50 years. One thing is for certain, each year will bring new “must have” gadgets for both farmers, and farmers’ wives. At least now I’ll have something to do when I’m waiting to deliver lunch to my farmer in the field this spring.

Ethanol production up, biodiesel production down in 2010
Stop & see us at Booth 123 at the Iowa Power Show!
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) on January 12 announced that Iowa’s ethanol production was up in 2010, while biodiesel production was down. Forty-one Iowa ethanol plants produced 3.5 billion gallons in 2010, up from 3.2 billion gallons in 2009. Without the federal blenders tax credit for 2010, many of Iowa’s 12 biodiesel plants did not operate at all. Those that operated produced 48 million gallons of biodiesel in 2010, down from 85 million gallons in 2009. “2010 certainly told two different stories for renewable fuels,” said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “Iowa ethanol plants expand-
ed production as demand for ethanol grew with rising gasoline prices. On the other hand, biodiesel plants were struggling just to survive. Shaw added, “We believe 2011 will witness more demand for both ethanol and biodiesel, but there will continue to be challenges. Iowa plants are well positioned to overcome these challenges because the state is committed to a more renewable future.” Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 41 ethanol refineries capable of producing nearly 3.7 billion gallons annually. In addition, Iowa has 12 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce 315 million gallons annually.

NRCS Announces Easement Conservation Program Results for 2010
New executive director named to Iowa Sheep Industry Association
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) purchased conservation easements valued at more than $50 million covering 16,000 acres in fiscal year 2010 through three Iowa NRCS easement programs, the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), the Emergency Watershed Protection – Floodplain Easement Program (EWP–FPE), and the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP).
The Iowa Sheep Industry (ISIA) announced a new Executive Director taking office as of January 1, 2011. Robyn Amthauer of Conrad will be filling the available position with the organization. Amthauer hails from west central Minnesota and has maintained an active lifestyle within the agriculture industry. She grew up on a beef cattle and crop farm where much of her time was spent exhibiting and managing Hereford and Angus cattle. She pursued higher education at South Dakota State University (SDSU) where she obtained a degree in Agriculture Journalism and a minor in Animal Science. While at SDSU, she stayed highly active in the College of Agriculture participating in Block and Bridle and the Little International. Most recently, Amthauer held the position of Advertising and Media Promotions with the Clay County Fair in Spencer. While with the fair, she oversaw all activities related to advertising, promotions, sponsorships and media. She also had the opportunity to be involved in several other planning sectors of the nine-day event. Amthauer expressed her excitement in joining the ISIA saying, “I’m extremely pleased to be
WRP Since 1992, landowners have voluntarily placed their land into permanent easements to be protected, enhanced, and restored to wetlands through the WRP. Since October 2009, Iowa NRCS funded the purchase of 32 contracts totaling 3,539 acres at a value of $11,171,789. The NRCS goal is to achieve the greatest wetland functions and values, along with optimum wildlife habitat, on every acre enrolled in the program. Monona County in western Iowa led the state with five WRP contracts covering 361 acres at a value of $1.1 million. Winnebago County in northern Iowa had four contracts covering 296 acres at an easement value of $890,000, and Butler County finished with three contracts covering 486 acres at an easement value of $1.6 million. EWP-FPE In response to the 2008 Floods, Iowans with agricultural land in floodplains prone to flooding were provided an opportunity to place that land into a permanent easement through the EWP-

FPE program. Since October 2009, Iowa NRCS has reserved funding for 119 floodplain easements covering 11,651 acres with an easement value of $38.6 million. Benefits of this program include: reducing flood impacts downstream, improving wildlife habitat, reducing long-term federal disaster assistance, and reducing soil erosion. Bremer County placed 11 floodplains into permanent vegetative easements, covering 888 acres at a value of about $3 million. Lucas County in southern Iowa finished with six easements covering 993 acres at a value of just more than $3 million, and Muscatine County placed 10 floodplains into permanent easements on 1,315 acres at a value of $2.9 million. GRP The Grassland Reserve Program is a voluntary USDA program that helps landowners and operators protect working grasslands, including hayland, pastureland, native grasslands, and certain other lands using rental contracts or conservation easements. Since October 2009, Iowa NRCS funded the purchase of 10 GRP contracts in the state covering 1,130 acres at a total value of $656,000. Ringgold County in southern Iowa had four contracts covering 470 acres at a value of $311,000. Guthrie and Monona Counties each finished with two contracts. Ridge takes over as Iowa FFA Foundation executive director The Iowa FFA Foundation announced that Brett Ridge assumed the duties of executive director on January 1. Ridge took over from Wayne Nattress, who retired. Nattress had been the executive director since the Iowa FFA Foundation was formed in 1986. His ag education career started more 50 years ago as an ag instructor at Palmer for three years. After 16 years at Buffalo Center, Nattress became employed by the Iowa Department of Education as an ag education consultant and served as the Iowa FFA Advisor. Nattress was responsible for starting the Iowa FFA Foundation in 1986 and soon left his post as Iowa FFA Advisor to be the full time executive director. "Wayne has dedicated 50 plus years to the FFA and Iowa's agricultural education system and we would not be where we are today without Wayne and his endless devotion,” stated Kevin Butt, president of the Iowa FFA
Foundation Board. “We are closing a very long and established chapter in the Foundation's history and I'm looking forward to starting another successful chapter with the addition of Brett." In honor of the Iowa FFA Foundation's 25th Anniversary, Nattress stated, "I retire with great appreciation for all the cooperation and financial support received from business/industry, local FFA chapters, FFA Alumni and individuals who have been partners by investing in Iowa's young people and agriculture. We are most thankful for sponsorships towards leadership programs, career development events, ag proficiency awards, and the FFA Enrichment Center. Best wishes to Brett as he creates new, successful fund raising initiatives that continue to strengthen Team Ag Ed throughout Iowa." Ridge came to the FFA Foundation after spending six years as executive director with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa and four years with the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society of Iowa. Under his leadership, both organizations took significant leaps forward in amounts of dollars raised and Iowans served. Ridge is a native of Cedar Rapids and a graduate of the University of Iowa. He stated, “It is going to be a challenge to step in for a man like Wayne, who has literally built this Foundation from the ground up. However, I am confident that we are going to continue to grow and evolve which will allow us to do some incredible things for the agricultural students of Iowa!” The Iowa FFA Foundation seeks and provides financial support to assist the Iowa FFA Association, Iowa Postsecondary Ag Students Organization, Iowa Association of Ag Educators and the Iowa FFA Alumni in accomplishing their missions. Funds raised by the foundation help provide critical skills such as leadership, communication, and knowledge to today's agricultural youth.

Lean hog trade has been higher this week due to continued fund and chart buying. The weekly net change was $.33 lower on the February contract and April was up $.17. Cash trade has been higher this week due to seasonal expectations for reduced supply. It is called steady to $.50 higher for the remainder of the week after carcass values rose by $1 on Wednesday. Hog weights continue to average nearly 7 pounds heavier than year ago levels which should limit cash upside. The trade is optimistic the export sector will help support the record prices; the dioxin scare in Germany this week may help support us pork exports as end users may be hesitant to purchase EU pork in the wake of that incident. The trade should be pricing in a lot of bullish items and there is a bullish mentality surrounding the trade that is assuming

The large snow storm across the central plains this week has also contributed to the upside as colder temps imply reduced feed gain and therefore lighter cattle; sloppy conditions have reduced availability. Cash trade has been slow to develop this week, but it is called $1 to $2 higher due to the recent board strength and
cutout strength. Cash bids moved to $167-8 and $104-5 yesterday, so trade above these levels may occur. The cutout trade was firm yesterday with choice up 1.17 at 168.59 and select up 2.46 at 163.79. October futures traded over $115 at midweek, so the charts continue to look friendly, but the trade is getting to be overbought. This should be viewed as a selling opportunity, but the trade remains fearful of a further blow off top. Hedgers call with questions.

WHEAT 01/13/11
CORN 01/13/11
SOYBEANS 01/13/11
Wheat trade has been mixed this week due to light profit taking by market longs, spillover support from the row crops, and a neutral USDA report. The weekly net change is 4 lower on the March Chicago contract, KC is up 6, and Minneapolis is up 7. Global weather concerns should continue to support the trade, but the focus this week has been on the report. The report, overall, was neutral for wheat. The Dec 1 wheat stocks were at 1.928 billion versus the trade estimate of 1.94 billion and the range of 1.84 to 2.03. The Dec 1, 2009 stocks were 1.782 billion. The new domestic carryover was 24 million lower than expected at 818 million bushels. Historically this remains a big number. The world wheat carryover was just over 1 million tons greater than the December estimate at 178 million tons. The winter wheat 2011-12 planted area was at 41 million versus the expected 41.2 million acre. Wheat will need to keep pace with the row crops in order to avoid losing acres, so spillover direction should continue to control trade near-term. The weekly export sales came in at 147,300 tons for the 10/11 year and 11/2 sales were reported at 27,900 tons. Combined, they were more than 200,000 tons short versus expectations. Hedgers call with questions.
Corn trade has been higher this week following the supportive USDA Supply and Demand report. The weekly net change is 36 higher on both the March and May contracts. There were rumors early this week that COFCO, the Chinese grain buyer, has started to buy corn in order to replenish reserves. Indonesia also announced on Monday that they would eliminate import tariffs on food related commodities in an attempt to fight inflation there. These items supported trade early but the focus this week was on the Wednesday’s USDA report. The 2010 yield number was 1.1 bushels lower than expected at 152.8 bushels giving a 12.447 billion 2010 US production number which was nearly 100 million below the average trade guess. Total demand was unchanged from the December report, so the lower production brought the carryover down to 745 million bushels. The December 1 Quarterly stocks were at 10.04 billion versus the average trade guess of 10.1 billion. The world carryover was down 3 million tons to 127 million. There is still some uncertainty regarding South American production numbers that will continue to influence the market as we move through the early part of this year. Overall no major surprise from the USDA, but the report was friendly and higher soybean trade means higher competition for needed additional 2011 planted acres. The weekly were reported at a combined 507,500 tons which was inline with expectations. Hedgers call with questions.
Soybean trade has been higher this week following the USDA report. The weekly net change is 50 higher on March beans. March Meal is $18.80 higher and bean oil is up 105 points. Demand items remain supportive; China confirmed December bean imports this week at 5.43 million tons. This takes the year to date total to 54.8 million tons, which is up 28.8% from last year. While friendly, there is some speculation by market bears that the Chinese demand is mostly priced-in. Long-term focus will now shift to the South American crop where smaller production is likely needed in order to justify higher prices. In the shortterm the USDA report on Wednesday will continue to drive trade. The national 2010 yield estimate was reduced by .4 to 43.5 bushels per acre which was a big surprise. The ending stocks estimate dropped to 140 million versus the average trade guess of 158 million. Usage was lower with the crush estimate lowered by 10 million bushels and residual usage dropped by 7 million. The trade believes the carryover is even tighter with export increases still warranted on future reports. The world carryover moved to 58.28 million tons versus 60.12 million a year ago. With both the domestic and world carryover numbers trending downward the fundamental argument is for sideways to higher trade which will be needed to encourage production. The weekly soybean export sales were reported at 495,000 tons for the 10/11 year and 11/12 sales came in at 180,000 tons. Combined, they were within expectations. Meal sales came in at 26,200 tons and oil sales were 7,500 tons. Both meal and oil sales were disappointing. Hedgers call with questions.

CELLULOSIC ETHANOL PLANT SITED FOR EMMETSBURG Continued from Page 1 Per USDA and Department of Energy estimates, Sturdevant said, more than a billion tons of biomass are available that could be put to use in generating cellulosic ethanol. “It is a great challenge,” he remarked. As for choosing corn crop residue as a cellulosic input, Sturdevant stated, “Biomass is everywhere. There’s a lot in corn fields and POET’s existing facilities are surrounded by it. The producers that bring us grain have the capabilities to bring us biomass.” However, the project has undergone evolution. “When we first started, we believed we should pursue just corn cobs,” Sturdevant said. As an input, corn cobs are higher yielding than non-cob residue, are denser for transportation, and could be removed from the soil without a major loss of nutrients. Upon careful consideration it was determined that the technology to harvest pure cobs, while in development, would not be widely commercially available within several years. Then, POET determined that their biomass-to-ethanol process could accept cobs, leaves and husks. Sturdevant noted that a commercial baler typically costs less than $40,000 while a cob harvester may cost several times as much. He added, “We see the value of leaving a lot of the stover in the field.” POET teamed-up with Iowa State University to conduct studies on the amount of stover that can be removed without leaving fields vulnerable to erosion or nutrient deficiency, which was determined to be less than 25 percent. The process for harvesting corn stover for ethanol production is somewhat different than for livestock feeding or bedding, Studevant explained. During corn harvest the combine is adjusted to drop the chaff in windrows instead of scattering the stover. This makes it easier to pick up the stover. By using choppers and stompers on the corn head, and with certain adjustments to the baler, farmers can minimize dirt in the bale, and ensure the biggest part of the stalk stays in the field, he added. A new company called POET Biomass was established to help guide farmers in transitioning to POET’s standard operating procedures. It
is likely that the facility will always work on contract with producers so input material availability is ensured. Project LIBERTY will directly employ 40 to 50 workers; six are already working. POET Biomass Regional Manager Alan Keller, stationed in Emmetsburg, can visualize and has already seen some of the auxiliary economic benefits of the plant. For example, he said, a new implement dealership decided to locate their facilities in Emmetsburg to provide area producers with another option to purchase the equipment necessary for biomass harvest. For Project LIBERTY at Emmetsburg in 2010, 85 farmers harvested 56,000 dry tons of biomass. “We want to establish the market and get farmers accustomed to doing this,” Sturdevant stated. “They’re not going to do this unless they make money, so it’s a new revenue for their operation.” While 2010 saw the “slow start of receiving bales,” remarked Keller, important research is being conducted with the bales at the stack yard in Emmetsburg such as determining the most economical and feasible bale storage techniques whether wrapping them as they are baled or tarping them. “We are studying different coverings now,” he said. He explained the construction of the stack yard included tiling it and providing drainage slope so moisture is drawn away from the bale stacks. Storm water runoff will be retained in a basin for testing before being released into the environment. The efficacy of a variety of surfaces including packed clay, aggregate and asphalt are also being tested. While research is emerging that relates specifically to biomass usage in ethanol applications, POET was able to utilize existing data from the hay industry. Situating Project LIBERTY adjacent to POET Biorefining in Emmetsburg will allow the twin plants to take advantage of synergies, Sturdevant commented, including infrastructure and existing facilities utilized by input producers. This is particularly important as the cellulosic ethanol plant will require a “sustainable biomass
Eric Bruhn, left, a POET employee, is also a family farmer and works with his father Myron and brother Trent to bale biomass according to the specifications required for ethanol production. At right Specialized equipment was constructed for the is Alan Keller the regional biomass manager for POET cellulosic ethanol plant at Emmetsburg POET. supply chain” a steady stream of biomass to the tune of 260,000 to 300,000 tons per year. The associated stack yard can accommodate 22,000 tons of material at a time and encompasses 22 acres. For illustrative purposes, Sturdevant noted that when the plant is operating at capacity it would be able to use stover from one third of the corn acres within a 35 mile radius of Emmetsburg. However, stover producers may be from further away. Eric Bruhn, a POET employee, farmer, and custom bailer, was among the producers delivering stover to Emmetsburg during the last harvest season. He recalled that his first baling experience was with hay making small square bales; harvesting stover was not even comparable. Whereas, with small bales, many people were required to operate equipment, transport the bales and ultimately unload them, the round stover bales Bruhn, his father Myron and brother Trent, made were “a lot less labor intensive and with many systems could be a one man job.” The Bruhns harvested 1,000 bales from 700 acres of their own ground and an additional 1,400 custom bales. “We started looking at balers and looking at what was going to give us the longest durability and best customer service,” he said. They purchased a Vermeer 605 Corn Stalk Special. Bruhn explained that there was little discernable difference in preparing for the bale harvest while harvesting corn. “We put the (combine) chopper in the up position to drop the stover instead of scatter it,” Bruhn explained. “It was a smooth fall, too.” In addition to crop farming, Myron custom feeds 500 hogs and trucks grain. Trent will soon be graduating from college with the goal of returning to farm as a career. Bruhn said, “We thought this was a good way to create extra revenue and keep the family operation going.” Additionally, “This is a good way to get into new and innovative ideas,” he said of his experiences with Project LIBERTY.
Plans for the operation of Emmetsburg’s POET biomass ethanol facility include handling primarily round bales of corn stover. An excavator equipped with a custom-built grapple will enable workers to pick up and move two large round bales at a time from the semis or trailers that delivered them and directly stack them in the yard.

trip to Iowa in August to personally experience Iowa agriculture up close. The vacation will include guided tours of several Iowa crop and livestock farms, an opportunity to feed cattle, drive a tractor and enjoy a home-cooked meal prepared and served by a farm family. The winner and guests will also receive redcarpet treatment at the 2011 Iowa State Fair, an annual celebration of food and agriculture. In addition to the grand prize, 10 semi-finalists will receive an all-Iowa farm gift basket featuring an assortment of food and ag-related products. Registration is easy and can be completed by logging on to www.ItStartsInIowa.com and clicking on the “Be Our Guest, Be a Farmer” icon. The contest runs through April 29 and is open to anyone 21 years of age or older who’s involved in a profession other than farming. Entries have already been received from across
the country, from Maine to Texas and from Ohio to Arizona. More than 90 percent of Iowa’s land area is devoted to farming, the most of any state, and nearly 96 percent of the state's farms are owned and managed by families. Iowa farmers and farm families nationwide are proud to provide an abundance of nutritious food choices that are also affordable. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported average Americans devotes less than 11 percent of their annual disposable income for food. In some countries, more than 50 percent of income is used to purchase food. Because Iowa farmers are so good at what they do, much of the meat and grain they produce is enjoyed by people throughout the United States and around the world. For example, turkey meat provided by an Iowa farm family is served at Subway and Jimmy John’s. To learn more about ISA, visit its Web site at www.iasoybeans.com.
“Be Our Guest” Consumers can register to win a four-day farm trip to Iowa For most Americans, farming is a way of life experienced only through books, an occasional TV show, nostalgic photos or memories of trips to Grandma and Grandpa’s farm. That’s about to change for one lucky family, courtesy of an innovative contest titled “Be Our Guest, Be A Farmer” launched recently by the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) with support from Iowa’s other farm commodity organizations. “Iowa farm families take pride in what they do and want to demonstrate their commitment to producing safe and nutritious food,” stated Aaron Putze, ISA director of external relations. “The ‘Be Our Guest, Be a Farmer’ contest offers an opportunity to showcase farm life in a unique, authentic and personal way.” One lucky contestant, accompanied by up to three guests, will win a four-day, three-night

Employee management workshops offered for agriculture operation owners A successful agricultural operation needs more than a good owner/manager, quality animals and appropriate facilities. Knowing the “how, when and why” of employee management also is a vital component that not everyone can claim. The Iowa Beef Center (IBC) and Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) at Iowa State University (ISU) are coordinating and hosting employee management workshop series this winter designed to provide this information. Russ Euken, ISU Extension program specialist, explained that attendees will learn about the employer’s role and responsibilities; communication, performance and legal issues; and compensation topics. “This is a three-session workshop to take place in four locations with specific topics addressed in each session,” Euken said. “ISU Extension field staff will lead the first session, Erin Herbold with the ISU Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation will be at the second session, and Bob Milligan of Dairy
Strategies is the featured speaker at the third session.” Participants will learn about useful tools for employee management and have time during the sessions to formulate plans to implement the tools. Presenters also will provide management resources and opportunities for discussion among those at the sessions. People should pre-register at least two days prior to the first workshop they want to attend by contacting the person listed for that location. All sessions are scheduled from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop fee is for meals during the workshops and can be paid at the door. $12 million loaned to Iowa farmers in FY2010 to install conservation practices Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said that during the past fiscal year nearly $12 million was loaned to Iowa farmers and land owners to install voluntary conservation practices that improve water quality. The low-interest loans were available through the State Revolving Loan Fund’s Local Water Protection and Livestock Water Quality Facility Loan Funds. “Since 2006 when the fund was created, 1,800 farmers have borrowed more than $54 million to support additional conservation on their farm,” Northey said. “As those funds are repaid they will be loaned out again to continue to support conservation in our state.” To apply for funds, farmers and landowners work with the local Soil and Water Conservation District in their county. Applications are accepted at any time during the year and are typically processed in a few days. Once approved, the loan recipient will work with an approved local lender who will make the loan. The Iowa Finance Authority then

units and operations that are not required to have an NPDES permit. Loans can be for $5,000 up to a maximum of $500,000 per borrower and can fund up to 100 percent of actual costs. The terms are up to 15 years and a fixed interest rate of no more than 3 percent for the life of the loan. Funding comes from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), a water quality financing program administered by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Finance Authority. The CWSRF uses a combination of federal capitalization dollars, leveraged bonds, repayments, and interest earnings to generate a continually revolving and growing fund that helps Iowans protect water resources. “This is another example of minimal state support generating significant investment by Iowa farmers and landowners to install conservation practices that allow them to better care for their land,” Northey said.

New publication helps farmers increase drying efficiency with dryeration When harvest conditions require high-temperature grain drying, the dryer system may be the bottleneck that limits harvest rate. A new publication from Iowa State University Extension addresses techniques for dryeration and combination drying to increase the drying rate for high-temperature corn dryers. “Dryeration and Combination Drying for Increased Capacity and Efficiency” (PM 2089K) is available to download from the Extension Online Store, www.extension.iastate.edu/store/. This publication illustrates dryeration techniques and management considerations to increase both drying capacity and overall energy efficiency. Topics include delayed cooling, moisture testing, system design and combina-
tion drying using both high-temperature and low-temperature systems to achieve optimal results. “In high-temperature systems, moisture is removed from the corn kernels faster than the moisture can equalize within the kernels,” said Shawn Shouse, ISU Extension agricultural engineer. “The dryeration process allows this moisture to move towards the surface of the kernel where it can be removed more efficiently.” “Implementing dryeration or combination drying requires additional planning, but the energy savings are considerable,” said Dana Petersen, ISU Extension program coordinator
with the Farm Energy Conservation and Efficiency Initiative. The publication is part of a series of farm energy conservation and efficiency educational materials being developed through the ISU Farm Energy Conservation and Efficiency educational initiative. The purpose is to increase farmers’ awareness of opportunities for improving efficient use of farm energy. The initiative also will help farmers explore alternatives to reduce farm energy demand and to improve their farms’ overall profitability in a rapidly changing energy environment. Virtual 4-H Club offers Iowa youth a digital storytelling experience Future animators and filmmakers can build their digital storytelling skills through Studio 4-H. The new 4-H club is virtual: it exists online and is open to Iowa youth throughout the state. Studio 4-H provides the opportunity for young Iowans, no matter where they live, to learn from professionals in cinematography, photography, audio production, graphic design and digital storytelling media, said Lisa Berkland, a 4-H youth development specialist with Iowa State University Extension and one of the club’s adult mentors. “We have partnerships with Adobe Youth Voices, an international digital storytelling project, and Grasshorse Inc., an Iowa-based company that does animation work throughout the United States,” Berkland said. Mentors from Grasshorse and ISU Extension Communications and External Relations will work with the club. Studio 4-H is a forum where young people can unleash their creativity, share their voice and be heard, Berkland stated. Club members have

Like other 4-H clubs, members set their own learning goals and mentors help them achieve those goals. Youth may sign up now for Studio 4-H. Eligible youth must be in grades 4 through 12 and be 4-H members in their county, Berkland said. “If you’re not already a 4-H’er, that’s OK. Sign up for Studio 4-H online and we will help you get enrolled in 4-H through your county. It’s easy,” she stated. Studio 4-H members may be enrolled in a local 4-H club as well or they may be enrolled only in Studio 4-H. Iowa women farmers have opportunity to help counterparts in Uganda Iowa women farmers have a rare opportunity to help women farmers in Uganda by volunteering to work with Iowa State University’s Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL), ISU Extension and VEDCO – Volunteer Efforts for Developmental Concerns, a Ugandan non-government organization. Iowa volunteers will spend approximately two weeks in Kamuli District working directly with smallholder farmers. They will share knowledge, experience and market bases, and demonstrate ways to enhance nutrition. The effort is funded by a $100,000 U.S. AID grant administered through Weidemann and Associates. “Poverty is widespread in Uganda, particularly among households that depend on agriculture,” said Mary Holz-Clause, associate vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach and grant principal investigator. “Iowa State University, through the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CRSL), and VEDCO have partnered with smallholder farmers to develop and strengthen their knowledge and technologies for improved production. We are excited to involve Iowa women with farming expertise in this project.” Iowa women actively engaged in farming who have an interest in traveling to Africa and assisting Ugandan women improve their farm business management should consider volunteering. “This is an opportunity to volunteer in a teaching role and experience a new culture,” said Linda Naeve, project co-director. “Volunteers need to be able to walk two to four miles in a day, at least one mile without tiring, and have a valid passport.”
Volunteers will travel to Uganda for one period of 10 to 12 days in 2011. Travel periods will be in one of the following months: March, August or November. All travel expenses from Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri, or Minneapolis, Minnesota to Uganda and back will be covered. No compensation beyond travel expenses will be allowed. Full medical and liability coverage during the project will be provided. Volunteers will be based in Kamuli, a town in the Kamuli District of Uganda, approximately 75 miles northeast of the capitol, Kampala. Volunteers will be housed in a group house, managed by VEDCO staff with support from CSRL. All meals will be provided on-site. Teams will work with an interpreter to interview Ugandan women farmers and provide input to help enhance their farm’s profitability. One project will help Ugandan farmers develop detailed farm descriptions and net worth statements so they can access commercial loan funds. Volunteers also will gather information about key crops and livestock, including their potential for improvement, expansion and further economic development. For more information, contact Margaret Smith, project co-director, ISU Extension Value Added Agriculture Program at mrgsmith@iastate.edu or 515-290-4456. To apply for a volunteer position, go to www.extension.iastate.edu/Global/News/opportunity.htm and download an application. Submit completed application as an e-mail attachment to Margaret Smith at mrgsmith@iastate.edu. The application deadline is January 31.
ISU conference shows how to tap the potential of wind generation Iowa is the second largest producer of wind energy in the United States, just behind Texas, and many Iowans are interested in knowing if they can take advantage of the wind’s natural energy for their own use. Iowa State University Extension is hosting the Central Iowa Wind Energy Conference at two locations in February to explore wind energy opportunities. “The conference will be of interest to producers, industry owners, school officials, residential owners and farmers who have continuous electric needs and want to generate their own power,” said Kapil Arora, ISU Extension field agricultural engineer and conference co-coordinator. “Key speakers will address wind energy basics, grants and zero interest loans for wind generators and wind energy contracts.” Bill Haman, Iowa Energy Center, and Erin Herbold, Iowa State University Agriculture Law Center, will be the key speakers at the conference. The conference will take place on Thursday, February 3, at the Recreational Center in Melbourne, and on Thursday, February 10, at the Webster County Extension Office in Fort Dodge.
The conference will give participants a chance to evaluate wind as an energy source and explore the future potential of wind energy. During the conference, early adopters of wind energy will discuss applications for acreage, school and on-farm wind turbine use. A panel of representatives from utility companies serving the area will conclude the conference program. The registration fee, including lunch and workshop materials, is $30 for those registering up to two days before the conference. Late registrations will be $40. Walk-in registrations on the date of the conference will be accepted if space is available. Registration forms can be obtained by calling the ISU Extension – Marshall County Office at 641-752-1551 or ISU Extension – Webster County Office at 515-576-2119 or by going online at www.extension.iastate.edu/marshall. Completed registration forms and fees should be sent to the county extension office hosting the conference: Marshall County for Melbourne and Webster County for the Fort Dodge location.

ICA members encouraged to submit policies for annual convention in February The Iowa Cattlemen's Association (ICA) will adopt its 2011 policies at its annual convention February 25 and 26 in Ottumwa. The discussion and adoption of policy guides the organization through the year as it works on issues with legislators, Congress members and regulators. Three ICA policy committees will meet Friday, February 25: • Business Issues Committee focuses on ag policy, public/private lands and environmental management, and tax and finance issues.
• The Beef Product Committee deals with beef safety, global consumer marketing, and nutrition, health and information. • The Cattle Production Committee will review cattle health and well-being, live cattle marketing, and science and technology. On Saturday, February 26, the ICA annual meeting will include discussion and adoption of all proposed policies by the registered members. Members who have policies they would like to introduce to the policy committees can submit
those policies early to Duane Gangwish, ICA CEO. Early submissions will give delegates the opportunity to review the ideas before the meetings, and should keep the work of the committees flowing smoothly. However, policy issues can also be submitted from the floor. Those who have not yet registered for the meeting are encouraged to do so soon. Early bird registrations to the ICA annual convention provide savings of $35 per person. Early registrations are due by Wednesday, February 9.

The promotion is part of the 39th annual Iowa Pork Congress at the Iowa Events Center to thank the many Iowans who regularly support the state’s pork industry by purchasing and consuming pork. Several companies will be helping IPPA sponsor the event.

The award, sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and WHO Radio, with financial support from the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, is presented 10 times annually in memory of long-time farm broadcaster Gary Wergin. Recipients include Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in caring for their neighborhoods, animals and environment and have demonstrated what it means to be a good neighbor. The recipient of the award will be recognized with a plaque and the presentation will be broadcast live on WHO Radio.

Gingrich currently serves as chairman of American Solutions for Winning the Future. “Speaker Gingrich has been a champion for renewable fuels since at least 1995 – first in the legislative arena and, more recently, in the arena of ideas,” said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “Gingrich is always thoughtful and thought provoking, so we know the Summit audience will look forward to his remarks.” Gingrich is scheduled to address the Summit at 11:30 a.m. Other speakers include NASCAR Champion Rusty Wallace, Governor Terry Branstad and Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen. Wallace will speak on NASCAR’s move to use E15. “As the nation prepares for a new ethanol blend – E15 – NASCAR is proving that E15 is a high-performance, green fuel for some of the most powerful engines in the racing world,” said Lucy Norton, IRFA Managing Director. When the green flag drops for the 2011 race season, NASCAR’s three major national touring series will run on E15 – a fuel blend containing 15 percent ethanol. The switch to this highoctane, clean-burning fuel has resulted in a gain in horsepower, according to NASCAR officials. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved the use of E15 in passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks for model years 2007 and newer. It is anticipated that this approval will be expanded in the near future to include 2001 and newer models. “NASCAR is an illustrious model for the future of higher ethanol blends,” Norton stated. “The confidence that NASCAR is putting into our American-made fuel sends a strong message to motorists and race fans that E15 is a reliable, high-performance fuel.”

Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing & Insulation System Urethane foam roof insulation produces energy cost savings with the highest R-values. This protection against temperature extremes reduces the possibility of substrate cracking. Because it’s seamless, there are no laps or joints to leak, crack or tear. It’s lightweight, which means less of a load on your roof structure. In addition, foam adds to structural strength.

They are effective, economenergy.
Foam Injection Systems Foam Injection is a great solution to updating and improving your home’s insulation, even if you have pre-existing fiberglass inside your walls. A simple, usually one-day application of foam through small holes in the exterior of the structure, frame or block construction, fills in the spaces to form a complete barrier to outdoor temperature variations. In addition to the superior insulation value of foam insulation the product is also non-flammable, which adds safety and value to your home. It also helps provide a barrier against insects and animals coming in from the outside, while it keeps you comfortable inside. Unlike blown-in cellulose or fiberglass, injected foam will not settle over time. This means that your insulation stays in place, particularly at the top of walls where it is most needed. Non-toxic and completely safe, our injected foam products produce no fumes, gases or emissions that may be created by other types of insulation products.
