Global corn stocks likely the key to land values/rents on into 2012-13 by Bill Bluml, US Farm Lease, Ames We keep hearing about high land values and strong cash rents across the Midwest. The main factor in pushing these values higher has been very strong corn prices during the past year. So the question of continued strong land prices comes back to the corn market. Will the corn market move up or down in 2012? No one can predict commodity market prices. No one. But we can look to fundamentals in the market to get a sense of market direction. Many factors move commodity prices, but ultimately long term price direction is driven by fundamental supply/de-
mand in the market. The grain markets function is to balance supply and demand. We are currently seeing a very tight supply/demand situation in both U.S. and world corn. Supply/demand (S&D) can be measured over time by looking at the stocks-to-use ratio. In simple terms, take the current ending stocks projections and divide them by the total use (demand or disappearance) for the year. In the United States the USDA is currently projecting ending corn stocks at 846 million bushels (mbu) and total demand for the 201112 crop year at 12.655 billion bushels (bbu). If you divide 846 mbu by 12.655 bbu, you come up with
the U.S. stocks-to-use ratio of 6.7 percent. Another way to look at the supply/demand situation is to come up with the number of days that the ending stocks will “supply the market. If total use for the entire 2011-12 crop year is 12.655 bbu, we are using 34.671 mbu of corn every day. If we divide the ending stocks of corn (846 mbu) by 34.671 mbu, we come up with a 24-day supply of corn on September 1, 2012. We have not seen this tight a supply since September 1996 when we got down to an 18-day supply. PRICES . . . Page 2

And we will NEVER run out of corn. Remember, the market’s function is to balance supply/demand. So if corn supplies get too tight, the market will move higher to “ration usage. This is sometimes called “demand destruction. Prices move up to high enough levels that end users (i.e. livestock producers, world importers or corn processors) cannot afford to pay for corn and slow down or quit using corn for their needs. So relatively speaking, how tight is the corn supply? Anytime ending U.S. corn stocks get below a billion bushels, our supply/demand is tight. If you look at the chart in Figure 1 (on Page 3), you can see that we have only seen U.S. stocks-to-use fall below 10.0 percent in three of the past 33 years (1996, 2004 and 2011). We have not had two years in a row with stocks-to-use below 10.0 percent. So our current situation is unprecedented. How do we work our way out of a very tight S&D situation? Normally we see two things happen. First, the market reacts to the upside and
WINTER 2012
farmers plant more acres of corn in the year following a year with very tight supplies. The market “buys acres and thus production is normally increased the following year and stocks of corn are rebuilt. Secondly, the price increase also slows the demand for corn and overall use goes down, also contributing to an increase in ending stocks. In the current 2011-12 crop year, production did not go up. In fact, we dropped production in the United States by 89 million bushels. We are seeing a reduction in the demand side of the market (total use is projected to be down 399 million bushels or 3.06 percent), but ending stocks have gotten tighter. The crop year doesn’t end until September 1, 2012. We could see corn prices work higher into 2012 to further reduce the usage side of the supply/demand equation. And remember, we need to influence farmers to plant more acres in the spring of 2012. Price will likely have to move higher (at least relative to other crops) to get that job done. In the spring of 1996 farmers increased corn acres by 7.7 million acres (+10.8 percent) to help balance S&D. In the
spring of 2004 we saw an increase of 2.2 million acres (+2.8 percent) planted to corn. And this past year, 2011, we saw farmers plant an additional 3.7 million acres (+4.2 percent) to corn to help balance the supply/demand, but due to lower yields we did not see an increase in overall production. We will need a minimum of 93.5 million acres of corn planted in 2012 with average yields (154.0 bpa) to get U.S. corn stocks-to-use back above the 10.0 percent level. This would be an increase of 1.6 million acres (+1.7 percent) from 2011 and would leave carryout at just 1.3 billion bushels. This would not be a “surplus situation by any means. That is the situation in the United States. Guess what? We live in a global environment today and we also must look closely at world supply/demand, not just what is going on in the United States. When we look at world corn we generally look at world coarse grains because we see other feedgrains substituted for corn around the world. Coarse grains include grain sorghum, rye, barley, oats, millet and mixed grain.
WINTER 2012
IOWA FARM & RANCH: STATEWIDE
It happens that the world coarse grain situation is also very tight. World stocks-to-use are projected to be 12.8 percent on September 1, 2012. Only three years have been tighter in terms of stocks-to-use: 2007, 1974 and 1973. As you can see in Figure 2 (above, right), we have had world coarse grain stocks that have been lower than this year’s projection of 161.8 million metric tons (mmt), but we have only three

years (one in recent history) that the world stocks-to-use ratios have been tighter. You have to remember that the world is consuming more than two times the coarse grains today as we did in 1970 (total use in 1970 = 623 mmt, total use in 2011 = 1,265 mmt). World demand for coarse grains will very likely set a new record with the 2011-12 season at 1,265 mmt. World consumption of coarse grains has shot up 12.3 percent

since the 2006-07 crop year when prices started to move higher. In other words, the argument that demand is suffering as a whole globally due to high prices doesn't hold water. Can that change? Certainly it can, but today’s situation is much tighter than a year ago and we haven’t put the South American crop in the bin and it will be a little while before we plant the 2012 U.S. corn crop. Several areas of the United States are dry. We

will need to recharge the moisture profile across the Midwest in order to produce trendline yields this year. We can’t afford yield problems unless we plant substantially more corn acres this spring. Between now and March 15 farmers will be watching the market to see how much corn to plant. The corn market moved to nearly $8.00 in August and has stayed above

$5.75 since. It would seem that corn prices will have to work back up to slow world demand. All of this talk about U.S. and world supply and demand may not seem to have anything to do with land values and farmland rental rates. But yet it has everything to do with them. If corn prices do move back up to ration usage and attract more acres in
2012, that means gross farm income will be high again in 2012. Higher gross farm income will push land values and rental rates up. Many other factors will impact agriculture and land values, but this is a big one to watch. The next two to three months will be critical in determining profit potential and thus land values going forward.

At Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit: Industry is revived and ready At its sixth annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit on January 24, the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) released a new study detailing the strong impact of renewable fuels production on Iowa’s economy. “Tonight (January 24) the President will report on the state of the union, but this morning I can assure you that the Iowa renewable fuels industry is revived and ready,” IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw told the large crowd. “While not being insensitive to our friends and neighbors who are looking for work, we should celebrate the success of renewable fuels and the profoundly posi-
tive impact that success has had on Iowa’s economy and rural communities. No one should question that Iowa has done better than many other states during this long recession. And the reason for that is our strong agricultural economy with renewable fuels playing a leading role.” According to the report, “Importance of the Renewable Fuels Industry to the Economy of Iowa,” at year-end 2011 production levels, ethanol and biodiesel production: accounted for nearly $6 billion, or four percent, of Iowa’s gross domestic product generated $3.7 billion of income for Iowa households supported more than
82,000 jobs through the entire Iowa economy “2011 was a revival year for renewable fuels. Both the ethanol and biodiesel industries experienced continued growth in 2011 despite high feedstock and input prices,” said economist John Urbanchuk, technical director of Cardno ENTRIX. “Ethanol and biodiesel producers are part of a manufacturing sector that adds substantial value to agricultural commodities produced in Iowa and makes a significant contribution to the Iowa economy.” The complete study can be found online at www.IowaRFA.org/documents/2012IowaEconomicImpact.pdf.

Ames, Clay County and Quad Cities students submit winning entries in renewable fuels video contest The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) announced that Sam Ennis of Ames was the first place winner of its second annual “Fuel the Future” video contest for Iowa high school students. IRFA awarded a $1,000 grand prize to Ennis, a senior at Ames High School, for his highly creative, entertaining and informative music video entitled “I Got You Ethanol.” Second place and a $600 prize was awarded to Clay County students Gabby Huss, Rebecca White and Blair Montgomery for their video entry called “Ethanol for the Economy.” Huss, White and Montgomery are 10th graders at Clay Central Everly Community School. Third place was award-
ed to Cassandra Davis, Haley Jewell, Lauralin Berkley, Cody Corchado and Meredith Brister of the Quad Cities. The 11th graders at Pleasant Valley High School earned a $400 prize for their video production titled “Dear 25 Year Old Me.” The winners were selected by a panel of five judges with expertise in film, television, marketing and the renewable fuels industry. IRFA’s “Fuel the Future” contest challenged Iowa high school students to create the best video highlighting the importance and benefits of renewable fuels - such as ethanol and biodiesel - to local communities, Iowa and the nation. In addition to receiving $2,000 in prizes, the top
three videos were featured at at the sixth annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit. All contest entries are posted on IRFA’s YouTube channel, which can be viewed at the following site: ww.youtube.com/IowaRenewableFuels. “Anyone searching for the next ‘viral’ video needs to look no further than the IRFA YouTube page to view this year’s winning entries,” said IRFA Biofuels Manager Grant Menke. “IRFA congratulates the ‘Fuel the Future’ winners as well as each of the Iowa high school students who took on the challenge of entering this contest.” The contest was sponsored by the law firm of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP and the IRFA Ethanol and Biodiesel Promotion Committees.

Lotteries and dreams I bought another Powerball ticket this week. I couldn’t help it. The jackpot for Wednesday night stood at $120 million, and really who wouldn’t be able to find ways to spend $120 million? The commission raised the price of a single ticket to $2, which with the reduced number of Powerball numbers (from 39 to 35) will increase the odds of winning the lottery. The minimum jackpot also went from $20 million to $40 million at the beginning of the year. With the odds of winning at 1 in 175,223,510, according to the Powerball website, do I think I have a shot of winning? Sure I do, if I can beat out 174,223,509 other people and pick the right numbers. Seriously, I don’t believe I’m going to win Powerball. However, it does give me the opportunity to dream
big each time I hand over my hard earned money to take a shot at the millions. It’s nice to be able to dream about things you can do for your community, and I’ve thought of a bunch of projects I’d like to do. The 4-H building on our fairgrounds has no air conditioning and no stage. I dream of the day when the building is a little bigger, with a stage for fashion shows and communication presentations. I dream of the day that visitors can see all of the hard work the 4-H members have accomplished during the year without having to wipe away a quart of sweat from their foreheads. I dream of being able to set up those exhibits without dropping five pounds of sweat on the floor of the exhibit area. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, too, if we could use that
building in the winter for presentations and learning experiences for the 4-H members, which we could do with some insulation and a furnace? I also dream of being able to have a community building for the kids to go after school when they don’t have any place else before their parents are finished with their work day. I dream of being able to serve and teach more kids in 4-H and the Scouting programs who maybe can’t afford it now, or whose parents don’t have the time to help teach them. Those $2 I spend each time the Powerball gets high afford me the luxury to dream those dreams. I remember when my husband and I first told my parents that we were engaged; my dad asked me if I liked to gamble. I said I thought it was fun every once in awhile, but
THE
FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch not too often. He responded I should get used to it, because farming is a gamble each year. Farmers put the seed in the ground each spring, and gamble that the seed, weather, fertilizer, and other
conditions come together in a perfect storm to create a bountiful harvest that will sustain the family for another year. Sometimes things go wrong, but a lot of the time they go right. After 17 years of “gambling I’m a bit used to it now. Each year, when my husband sends me to the bank to sign various documents, I take it in stride. The first few years panicked me; I won’t lie. However, I did grow up in the 80’s when farmers and bankers weren’t exactly buddies. I now understand the “gambling of farming, within reason, will allow us to raise our children. Will we ever be able to travel around the world each winter to Egypt, England, Antarctica, Australia, the Galapagos Islands, or China?

WINTER 2012
Livestock show supply business nationally recognized by Emma Kirk Sullivan Supply, a Dunlap livestock show supply business now in its 23rd year and serving customers across the United States, was recently honored in a national awards program called Best of the Barns. Scott Kinzer, who has been with the company since 1990 and is involved with new product development, shared with Iowa Farm & Ranch some aspects of the business that have contributed to its longevity and success. Sullivan Supply was started by John Sullivan in 1989 to fill a niche in the livestock show industry and meet the needs of customers for products that were not available at that time. The company is a manufacturer and marketer of products to exhibitors that show animals from small county fairs to those with entries in national competitions and include cattle,
sheep, pigs, goats and dairy cattle, Kinzer commented. “We got into this market because we showed livestock and we felt a need to expand upon product available at the time,” he elaborated. Sullivan Supply grew from the Dunlap location – which started in John’s parents’ garage – to include Hillsboro, Texas, in 1992 and Lodi, California, in 1999. For those that may be surprised about the California location, Kinzer commented, “There’s more agriculture out there than a person would think - California is a big state!” From this location Sullivan Supply can also service livestock shows near the West Coast and Pacific Northwest. The Iowa location employs about 15 people year around with more seasonally as needed, Kinzer said. With himself included, Kinzer added that all employees have shown live-
stock at some time in their past, which provides a strong basis of practical knowledge and familiarity with the needs of the industry. Additionally, the Sullivans continue to breed and raise shorthorn cattle and crossbred club calves. New show products, such as grooming supplies, are tested for their efficacy and practicality with the family’s own show herd prior to being offered for sale. Products that Sullivan Supply has developed during the past two decades include grooming chutes, a specialized turbo fan to cool livestock, and a livestock blow dryer. Other items include unique formulas of shampoo and grooming products as well as those items used on the day of the show such as adhesives and sprays that previously did not exist. “We’re marketing products to people who take bet-

ter care of the hair on their animals than the hair on themselves,” he commented wryly. However, since each animal may be washed and dried up to multiple times per day leading up to the show, the products used are important because they – along with the work of the owner/handler – lay the groundwork for how the animal will perform in the show arena. Representatives of Sullivan Supply routinely attend shows to provide retail service and have a trailer outfitted specifically for sales. The company also sells product by catalog and online. Kinzer said, “Sullivan Supply has an extensive wholesale network also.” In 2011 Sullivan Supply started a new endeavor: Stock Show University. “Stock Show University is a not-for-profit, educational program within our company,” Kinzer explained. Through the program Sulli-

van Supply offers educational clinics throughout the country for youth wanting to learn more about showing cattle, typically at seminars during cattle shows. Sullivan Supply also hosts “grad” programs that are two-day, more hands-on learning opportunities. Kinzer said that at the first grad program, which took place June 2011 in Dunlap, about 200 people attended. “Professors” at the grad programs, he continued, are top-of-the-line professionals in the livestock show industry brought in especially for the event. “People are hungry for knowledge. They want to learn, and we’re here to help them learn proper techniques,” Kinzer stated. “When they know more, they’re more confident.” It is for Stock Show University that Sullivan Supply received one of six Best of the Barns Awards: Best Educational Clinic.

Beef Feedlot Roundtable sessions offered in February 14 Beef feedlot operators and others interested in production topics are invited to attend one of three Beef Feedlot Roundtable locations on February 14. Locations in Garner, Nashua and Manchester will be linked to a live meeting in West Point, Nebraska. The opportunity for Iowans is provided through a cooperative agreement between Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Extension to share livestock educational resources and programs. Iowa participants may listen, ask questions of presenters and engage in discussion with the Nebraska attendees through electronic access. The session will feature experts from ISU and UNL focusing on animal health and nutrition. ISU’s Jan Shearer will talk about digital dermatitis (also known as hair heel wart) and how to manage it in the feedlot. From UNL, Galen Erickson will present research on grain adaptation and roughage in the feedlot diet, and Heather DePra will talk about performance and economic impact of ionophores, implants and beta agonists in feedlots. Presenters from two UNL research facilities also will have updates from those locations. The program brochure provides more details, including a preregistration form and contact information. The session will begin with registration at 12:45 p.m. and will conclude by 4 p.m. The $10 per person fee (payable at the door) covers proceedings, meeting costs and refreshments. Those who want to attend should preregister by Thursday, February 9, to ensure adequate materials are available. For more information or to preregister, contact the ISU Extension beef program specialist listed for the following locations: Russ Euken, 641-923-2856, reuken@iastate.edu Garner, Hancock County Extension Office, 327 West 8th St. Nashua, Borlaug Learning Center, 3327 290th St.

Farmers’ Internet use detailed in 2011 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll As Internet coverage and access improve in rural areas, more Iowa farmers are making use of this information source in their farming operations, according to the 2011 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll. The 2011 poll included several questions on whether farmers have access to and use high-speed Internet service, the types of information they access and the sources of that information. Results from the annual poll are available in the 2011 Summary Report, PM 3016, which can be downloaded at no cost from the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Online Store, www.extension.iastate.ed u/store/. “Expansion of highspeed Internet coverage in rural areas has been a priority in recent years, and we wanted to learn more about how farmers access and use the Internet, especially broadband,” said ISU Extension Sociologist J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr., who co-directs the survey with ISU Extension Sociologist Paul Lasley. Arbuckle said 1,276 farmers participated in the poll. On average, the participating farmers were 65 years old, and 51 percent earned more than half of their income from farming. “We gave farmers a list of options and asked them to indicate whether they
had access to high-speed Internet. We also asked them to select all the ways that they access the Internet, so in numerous cases farmers reported more than one source of access,” Arbuckle said. “Sixty percent of Farm Poll participants reported they use high-speed Internet service. When we accounted for multiple forms of access, 70 percent of farmers reported that they use the Internet,” Arbuckle said. The most common means of access, at 27 percent, was through a digital subscriber line (DSL) service. Fourteen percent of farmers reported accessing broadband through a satellite service, 13 percent through a wireless/cell phone service and 12 percent through cable. Twelve percent reported they accessed the Internet over a standard telephone line. “Only 14 percent of the farmers reported that they did not have access to high-speed Internet. In fact, the percentage of farmers who reported that they had access to highspeed Internet where they live, but chose not to use it - 21 percent - is significantly higher than the proportion who indicated that they lack access,” Arbuckle said. The last decade or so has seen an explosion of agriculture-related websites as farm magazines, agribusinesses, farm
About the Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll Conducted every year since its establishment in 1982, the Farm and Rural Life Poll is the longest-running survey of its kind in the nation. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and the Iowa Agricultural Statistics Service are all partners in the Farm Poll effort. The 2011 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll summary report and previous summary and topical reports are available to download from the ISU Extension and Outreach Online Store (store.extension.iastate.edu/) and Extension Sociology (www.soc.iastate.edu/extension/farmpoll.html).
groups, conservation agencies and organizations, and other entities have increased their Internet presence and content. So in the 2011 poll farmers were asked about the types of farming-related information they accessed via the Internet, as well as how often they accessed information from a number of agriculturerelated agencies and organizations. These questions focused only on the 70 percent of farmers who indicated that they used the Internet, Arbuckle explained. Eighty-four percent

Farmers also were asked to indicate how often they access information online from several agencies and organizations that provide information and technical assistance on agricultural production and conservation. ISU Extension and Outreach was selected by more Internet users than any other option, with 47 percent of farmers indicating that they use Extension and Outreach at least periodically. Farm magazines were second, at 44 percent, followed by farm groups at 39 percent, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at 36 percent and the Farm Service Agency at 32 percent. Less than 30 percent of farmers reported they use the Internet to get information from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Iowa Department of Natural Resources or county conservation boards. The 2011 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll focused on a range of issues that are important not only to agriculture but to all Iowans, Arbuckle stated. The 2011 survey also examined farmers’ views on climate change, conservation issues, investment in agricultural drainage and their perspectives on reducing the federal deficit and balancing the budget.

of farmers who use the Internet have used it to get information on the weather, and 72 percent do so at least weekly. Most farmers who use the Internet also access the following general sites: market information, 78 percent general agricultural news, 75 percent information about crop production, 68 percent Arbuckle stated that those who access this information do so on a fairly regular basis. Fifty-five percent of farmers reported they use the Internet for information on farm financial management, as well as pest management. Fiftyone percent reported they seek information on soil and water conservation. However, farmers use the Internet for these types of information less frequently. Most reported they access these types of information less than once a month. “Only 39 percent of farmers accessed livestock production information. However, as you would expect, among farmers who raise livestock the percentage was higher, with 71 percent reporting using the Internet for livestock-related information,” Arbuckle said.

FSA Branstad uses allocates little-known way emergency of objecting to state rule funding John R. Whitaker announced that $10.8 million of Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) and Emergency Forest Restoration Program (EFRP) funding has been received for Iowa’s farmers to repair land that was damaged by 2011 natural disasters. “ECP funds will help producers rehabilitate farmland that has been devastated by natural disasters,” said Whitaker, “while EFRP will help in the restoration of private forest land.” Counties receiving ECP funds for Missouri River flooding are Woodbury, Monona, Harrison, West Pottawattamie, Mills, and Fremont. Woodbury County will also receive funding under the EFRP program. Dubuque, Benton, and Tama Counties will receive ECP funding for damages related to 2011 summer storms. ECP provides cost share assistance to rehabilitate farmland and conservation structures. Producers and landowners who have suffered terrace washouts, flood debris in the fields and deposits, fences washed out and other damage to eligible conservation structures should contact the local FSA office for more information. EFRP participants may implement emergency forest restoration practices, including emergency measures necessary to repair damage caused by natural disaster to natural resources on nonindustrial private forestland and restore forest health and forest related resources on land. FSA County Committee’s determine eligibility based on on-site inspections of the damaged land and consider the type and extent of the damage. To learn more about ECP, EFRP, or other programs administered by FSA, contact a local office or go online to www.fsa.usda.gov.
by Lynn Campbell, IowaPolitics.com In a move that Republican Governor Terry Branstad said should “put the bureaucracy on notice,” the governor signed a formal written objection Monday, January 23, to an Iowa rule requiring state inspections for electrical work on farm buildings. “This rule is unnecessary, it’s costly and it exceeds the authority of this board,” Branstad said at his weekly news conference. “This power grab by the Electrical Examining Board hurts hard-working Iowa farmers.” The Iowa Electrical Examining Board approved the rule in 2008, under the administration of Democratic Governor Chet Culver. Branstad said lawmakers made an exception for farmers when they passed a law requiring electrical inspections of commercial businesses. The governor accused the board of circumventing the law. But Barb Mentzer, chairwoman of the Iowa Electrical Examining Board, said the board was advised by the state attorney general’s office that agri-
culture is covered by the requirement for state inspections for electrical work. “All of the rules are written per the statute. There is no exemption in the code for farms specifically,” Mentzer said. “As a board, we see our responsibility as being the protection of everyone in the state.” Mentzer said the board reaffirmed its rule last week, after three farmers in Carroll County asked for a full exemption from the rule. She said electrical work can be dangerous if not installed properly. Since inspections started under the rule in March 2009, the state has seen a 35 percent reduction in electrical fires, she said. January 23 marked the first time an Iowa governor has used this littleknown authority to file a written objection to a state administrative rule that has been reviewed by a state board and lawmakers, Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht told IowaPolitics.com. Branstad said the written objection shifts the burden to the state board

to defend the rule. He said he couldn’t handle the issue by executive order, and it’s too late to veto the rule, which would have had to be done in the first 70 days of his administration. Branstad returned to office in January 2011. “It’s a new day, and you have new leadership,” Branstad said. “We’re on the side of creating jobs and growing the economy. We’re willing to take action as necessary, but we’re also going to be very careful and very judicious in taking action that is appropriate and legal.” Branstad said he heard “a lot of horror stories” about this rule, as he campaigned for governor in 2010. He said he expects legal action by farmers, although such a lawsuit would put the burden on the farmer to prove the board circumvented the law. Wapello County farmer Colin Johnson, of Batavia, is among those troubled by the rule, which he called unnecessary and financially burdensome as farmers work to build grain bins and make electrical and energy-efficient
upgrades. He said statemandated inspections have caused delays and lost work during harvest time. “A burdensome regulation such as this has inspection fees of $500 per incident. It’s a process that I don’t necessarily want to budget in to the fact that I need to expand and grow my operation,” said Johnson, who raises grain and cattle in the Ottumwa area. Johnson said he uses a licensed electrical contractor that he trusts, and doesn’t believe he needs a second opinion. He said he has a growing family with two children, and a third on the way. “I’m certainly not going to do anything that’s unsafe for myself or my children,” he said. But Mentzer said the average cost on a state inspection is about $200, which is based on the size of the project. She said $500 “is absolutely unheard of.” She said the board is still attempting to reach its attorney to determine how to react to the governor’s written objection.

Agriculture deans fire back at Yahoo! Education Respond to search engine company’s article, “College Majors that are Useless The deans of agriculture from four Midwestern universities fired back on January 25 at Yahoo! Education, responding to the search engine company’s article, “College Majors that are Useless, written by Terrence Loose. That article stated “Are you going back to school in hopes of graduating to more job opportunities? You might want to avoid these degrees and listed agriculture, animal science and horticulture as its first, fourth and fifth most useless degrees. Among the sources cited by Yahoo! Education were Laurence Shatkin, Ph.D. and author of “The 10 Best College Majors for Your Personality, the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2012 Job Outlook study and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But in an article entitled “No limits to the value of an agriculture degree, the four Midwestern agriculture deans wrote, “Before drawing his conclusions, we wish that Mr. Loose had done more homework beyond what appears to be a cursory review of Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers and the repurposing of a similar headline from The Daily Beast a year ago. The four deans are Jay T. Akridge, the Glenn W. Sample Dean at the College of Agriculture, Purdue University; Robert J.
Hauser, Dean, College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois; Bobby D. Moser, Vice President for Agricultural Administration & Dean, College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Science, The Ohio State University; and Wendy K. Wintersteen, Endowed Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Iowa State University. They were surprised that three of the five majors on Yahoo! Education’s list were programs in the agricultural sciences. They said that other sources suggest a need for graduates in the agricultural science programs and a shortage of graduates in the agricultural, food and natural resource sciences. The following points taken from the deans’ article show in more detail how they responded to the Yahoo! Education story: Š Broad definition of agriculture. The Yahoo Education article equated “agriculture with “farm management. Farm management is an important field of study, but defining agriculture only as farm management is much too narrow. Completely ignored are other important areas under the umbrella of “agriculture including food science, plant science, and soil science, where the Bureau of Labor Statistics report predicts job growth

should be faster than the average for all occupations, and where job opportunities are expected to be good over the next decade, particularly in food science and technology and in agronomy. And, of course, the “agriculture umbrella also covers agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, animal sciences, natural resource and environmental sciences, and agricultural education, to name a few. Š Very low unemployment rates. Recent (January 5, 2012) online posts (New York Times and NPR’s StateImpact Ohio) cited a just-released report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce which found agriculture and natural resources to be among the fields with the lowest unemployment rates lower than business, engineering, law, and and several others. Š Shortage of college graduates to fill need. The U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Employment Opportunities for College Graduates in Food, Renewable Energy, and the Environment, 20102015 report, projects that 53,500 qualified graduates will be available for about 54,400 jobs annually in the agricultural and food systems, renewable energy and the environment fields. About 55 percent of those graduates (29,300) are expected to earn degrees from colleges of agriculture and life sciences, forestry and natural resources, and veterinary medicine. The other 45 percent, an estimated
24,200 graduates, will come from allied disciplines including biological sciences, engineering, health sciences, business, and communication. Š No stronger sector for recruiting. Dr. Phil Gardner, director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University, recently wrote, “No sector appears stronger than agriculture/food processing with an increase in hires of approximately 14 percent in the annual Recruiting Trends report. Š Vital economic growth engine. A recent study conducted by the Battelle Institute, an independent research organization, found that agriculture and agbiosciences are generating vital economic growth and job creation, particularly in the North Central United States, which includes all four or our respective states. This Midwest area, once dubbed the “Rust Belt, is becoming the breeding ground for new “green agriculture-related jobs as the agriculture-driven industry is poised to expand into new markets such as health, specialty crops, biofuels and bio-based products. Š New areas of opportunity. The article completely misses an important trend of interest in small scale, local food production and those who want to become part of agriculture by launching these types of businesses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics report from which Mr. Loose took some of his numbers even points out

about some basic human needs and consider what “degrees will prepare a young man or woman to help provide for those needs. Adequate nutrition is a basic need of all humans. Our planet recently reached the seven billion population mark and the United Nations estimates we will have 2.3 billion more people to feed by the year 2050. We must address how to feed all these people with little expansion of land; in a way that conserves our water resources; and in a fashion that society judges acceptable and even more respectful of our environment. For answers, take a closer look at our agricultural majors. In addition, those in agriculture will make important contributions to our country’s energy requirements and help provide feedstocks for other industrial materials. To meet these challenges, a growing number of passionate, smart, and well-prepared people have a lot of work to do. And we see and talk to these people every day in our campus classrooms, labs and fields. That’s why we’re very excited by the prospects for our graduates. Agriculture has been one of the bright spots in the U.S. economy during the current recession and incredible opportunities exist for new economic development in our states and our country. Our graduates are currently writing their own story, and the headline reads: “College Majors that are Invaluable.

Composting helps swine farm improve biosecurity Following an initial project begun in 1999 at the Iowa State University (ISU) swine breeding farm in 1999, the university’s swine teaching farm started composting mortalities eight years ago in an effort to increase biosecurity practices. Swine farms manager Jay Lampe said the move was positive. “This process has changed our management style and lowered our biosecurity risks at the farm while providing a sustainable way of managing mortalities, he said. “Composting has eliminated two potential sources of disease outbreaks for our farms: rendering and fuel trucks are no longer entering our property. “We are able to decrease the number of outside vehicles like rendering trucks entering the farm grounds, and that helps us keep our biosecurity at a high level, Lampe said. The size of and cost to construct a composting facility varies according to available land, type of materials and size of mortalities to be composted. The swine teaching farm facility is completely roofed with eight bays, each of which is approximately 10 feet square with four foot high concrete walls. This allows adequate space for all carcass sizes from the farm to be incorporated. ISU agricultural and biosystems engineering professor Tom Glanville said the correct process of preparing and using a mortality composting facility is

vital to its success. “Start by placing a 12-inch layer of dry cover material, like sawdust, wood shavings, or chopped corn stalk, in the bottom of a compost bin, he said. “Decaying carcasses will release excess moisture, so this absorptive base layer plays an important role in preventing release of excess liquid. Alternate layers of cover material with additional carcasses until the bin or bay is filled, Glanville said. “The top layer should always be cover material, he said. “Realize that you might not be able to fill an entire bin in a short period of time depending on your operation’s mortality rates and size of the moralities. After a bin is filled, the compost must undergo a primary heating cycle of 60 to 90 days. This time frame varies based on the size of mortalities placed in the bin. After this initial heating cycle, the partially composted carcasses are moved from the primary bin to a secondary bin. “Moving the compost breaks up the materials in the pile, redistributes excess moisture, and introduces a new oxygen supply, Glanville said. “By the end of a 60- to 90-day secondary heating cycle with additional decomposition activity, even large carcasses of breeding stock are normally reduced to a few large bones that are free of soft tissues which cause odors or attract insects and predators.
The composting process can continue during winter months, he said. The layout of the composting facility also plays an important role. By having bins share a larger amount of common wall area, it cuts down on the amount of bin wall exposed to the cold, reducing heat loss. More information on composting equipment, facilities, procedures, sizing and layout is available in the ISU Extension publication, “Composting Swine Mortalities in Iowa. At the ISU swine farm, a nitrogen source, (mortalities or manure) and a carbon source (typically corn stalks or woodchips) are the primary materials used in composting. After the process is complete, the composted material is then usually applied on cropland. “Land disposal of mortality compost adds organic matter to the soil and allows mortalities to be returned to the soil without odor, attraction of flies, and other insects or scavengers, Glanville said. The long term success of composting on the swine farms has led to similar practices at other ISU facilities, including the poultry and beef teaching farms. “Deciding to compost means initial costs of constructing the facility, Lampe said. “But in the long run, it saves money that would be spent on a potential disease break from vehicles such as rendering services or fuel trucks for an incinerator entering the farm property. The trade-off was been well worth it at the farm.

25 beginning farmers selected for PFI’s Savings Incentive Program Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) has accepted an additional 25 beginning farmers into its Savings Incentive Program. The program, created to help beginning farmers succeed, now has 35 participants. Practical Farmers of Iowa plans to enroll 100 beginning farmers in the program over the next four years. The Savings Incentive Program is designed to encourage the next generation of farmers to make regular deposits into a savings account for their future farm development. Upon program completion, Practical Farmers of Iowa will match their savings dollar for dollar up to $2,400 so recipients will have $4,800 to use toward a business purchase. The savings match is only a small component of the program. Participants also learn valuable farm and business skills by being matched with a farmer mentor, attending field days, workshops and webinars, and completing a business plan. Iowa native and beginning farmer Kate Edwards recently returned to the state to begin her vegetable farming career near Solon. She stated, “I have been so encouraged by multiple conversations with PFI members, farm visits and PFI field days. Being involved in a deeper way with the PFI community through the requirements of this program will make a significant impact on my development as a farmer and the development of the farm. The financial aspect of this program will enable me to purchase a hoop house for season extension.” Beginning farmers taking advantage of the program are diverse in farm location and enterprise. Of the 25 new enrollees, 14 are producing fruits and vegetables, eight are raising row crops, six are raising beef cattle, four are raising poultry, four are raising sheep, two are growing herbs, one has meat goats, two operate a dairy and one raises niche pork. The 25 new Savings Incentive Program participants are: Brian Bagge, Worthington Thomas Burkhead, Rockwell City Jordan Clasen, Des Moines Chris Corbin, Nevada Betsy Dahl, Rolfe

Applicants are required to live or farm in Iowa, be members of Practical Farmers of Iowa, be farming now and have farmed for five or fewer years. Practical Farmers of Iowa will accept applications for a third round of enrollees in the fall of 2012. For more information about the Savings Incentive Program, contact Sally Worley at 515-232-5661, email sally@practicalfarmers.org. Practical Farmers of Iowa set a goal to raise $250,000 to provide savings matches to 100 beginning farmers. Through donations from individuals and companies dedicated to helping the next generation of Iowa farmers succeed as well as a grant from the Assets for Independence program of the Department of Human Services, Practical Farmers of Iowa has exceeded its goal, raising more than $298,000. Educational aspects of the program are made possible through the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA.

3,276 acres of farmland to be offered for sale on February 9 A total of 3,276 acres of farmland will be offered for sale in a public auction February 9. Other properties in this auction will include several income, commercial, development and residential properties. The 128 properties in total easily make the Grand Midwest Property Auction the largest property auction in Midwest history. The auction will take place at the Grand Falls Casino Resort in Larchwood, and attendance is expected to be in the thousands. The auction will be available online for live-real time bidding as well. Auctioneer and owner of MAC Auctions, Craig Olson, has been involved in auctioning real estate world-wide for more than 25 years, but this is the first time he has brought an auction of this size to the area. The auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a social hour at 5:30 p.m. "It's a totally new marketing concept to this area, and we are honored to be a part of Midwest history," stated Olson. "We are catching this area up with cities like LA, New York and Boston, and with the power of online bidding, we're bringing the local auction industry into the 21st century. It's no longer about keeping up with the Joneses but keeping up with the Jetsons." Over the past few years, the price of Iowa farmland has more than doubled leading some to believe that Midwestern farmland is in a bubble; but according to Olson, the land boom is based on economic fundamentals and isn't a bubble. Low interest rates, high corn and oil prices all play a big part in the Iowa land boom, and even at the current prices, good farmland yields a return of about four percent a year. "With the current prices of farmland, we have had an overwhelming demand from our clientele that wants to sell property. I've successfully been a part of these types of auctions around the world and thought that it was time. The Midwest is ready for this type of sale,” said Olson. Recently, national news was made when record prices were set for Iowa farmland. “Will we see those types of prices on February 9? Absolutely," said Olson. "The market is bearing great prices for everyone involved. The sellers are getting a great return on investment and the buyers are getting premium farmland, which is a great investment at any price - they aren't making any more of it. " Craig Olson is the owner and Auctioneer of MAC Auctions, a premiere full-service auction company specializing in agricultural and construction equipment and real estate sales.

IOWA FARM & RANCH: STATEWIDE
WINTER 2012
ARE YOU PREPARED FOR $1000 NH3 AND $5 CORN? Is your legacy application system wasting your NH3 dollars?— Please read on Ever think what would happen if you put a different amount of nitrogen on each row? Some rows would not get enough and would yield poorly. Some would get so much that not all could be used; so part would be wasted.
It’s great that you don’t have that problem!
Or do you? A decade ago Mark Hanna at Iowa State proved that legacy manifolds have poor rowto-row distribution. Then, he was instrumental in the invention of the Impellicone manifold- which has proven to give excellent distribution. decade ago aNH3.Company learned that heat exchangers have “wild card” coolant lines with extreme diversions of ammonia flow to an individual row (or maybe two). Then, they invented the basic Equaply system which avoids the coolant line wilderness. A
Some simple math gives the following picture. Say that you apply 200# of N per acre on 1000 acres with a 12 row toolbar at 5 mph. $850 per ton for NH3, seems current, let’s use that price. Let’s pick 10% as the total amount of ammonia over-applied in the “good” rows, probably conservative. The coolant line for most heat exchangers currently in use typically passes 2 to 3 gpm of ammonia; we’ll pick 2 gpm. Put all this together and you get a total cost of anhydrous of about $103,200. Of this, you lost 24% or $24,700 due to poor manifold design and excessive coolant flow.
