Heading for a record-setting March? by Gordon Wolf The unusually warm March weather has sent farmers to their fields, but it is far too early to think of planting. “The soil is not too wet by any means and it’s been perfect to get field work done,” said State Climatologist Harry Hillaker with the Iowa Department of Agriculture. However, even though the soil temperature is warm, Hillaker doubts that many, if any, producers want to take the chance that it won’t freeze again. “There’s a good likelihood that a freeze is down the road, not in the next 10 days or a little longer, but sometime,” he stated.

The last day for frost, according to the statewide average, based on the past 30 years, is April 26, still more than a month away. “If we don’t get a freeze before the end of March, the odds are very good there will be one in April,” Hillaker commented. Through March 20, the statewide average temperature for the month was 14.8 degrees above normal. That’s two degrees above the previous warmest March, which occurred in 1910. “Given the forecast for the rest of the month, that’s probably not going to change much,” said Hillaker. “That’s very unusual

but probably no surprise to anyone.” Hillaker said the warm weather and recent rainfall is sending a mixed message. “The positive is the warm weather removed any vestige of frost in the ground, so 100 percent of the moisture can make its way into the soil. That’s a little bit unusual for March,” he stated. “On the negative side, because it has been very warm, more moisture has evaporated, so all together it’s kind of a wash.” Hillaker said the driest area of the state is currently in Sac, Calhoun and Webster counties. He continued that overall, the state needs more rain.

E85 sales set Iowa record Sioux Central FFA Sales up 15 percent performs well at Districts in 2011 despite sluggish end of year The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) announced March 13 that E85 sales in Iowa reached an all-time high in 2011. According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, sales of E85 by Iowa retailers reached 10,728,997 gallons last year, representing a 15 percent increase over 2010 sales despite third and fourth quarter sales being down compared to the year prior. “E85 sales are up while overall gasoline sales are down – that shows progress,” stated IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “Price is still an important factor. With ethanol prices closer to gasoline in the last half of 2011, we saw our growth streak curtailed somewhat.

“But today, wholesale ethanol prices are quite attractive and that translates into very enticing E85 prices. E85 is the best way for fuel consumers to boost the Iowa economy, reduce dependence on foreign oil and still save a few bucks.” Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 41 ethanol refineries capable of producing nearly 3.7 billion gallons annually. In addition, Iowa has 13 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce 320 million gallons annually. Iowa currently has 167 retail outlets offering E85. A list of all the E85 stations can be found at www.iowarfa.org/ ethanol_e85refueling.php. The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s liquid renewable fuels industry. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.

Top ten of Iowa’s Best Burger contest named Burger lovers provided lots of answers to the question “Who has Iowa’s Best Burger?” After counting the votes, the top 10 restaurants for 2012 are ready to move on to the next level: the selection of Iowa’s Best Burger, which will be announced the first week of May. In its third year, Iowa’s Best Burger contest received more than 4,250 nominations that named 212 restaurants. The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association counted the nominations, and the results are (in alphabetical order): Ankeny Diner, Ankeny Coon Bowl III, Coon Rapids Drake Diner, Des Moines Farmer’s Kitchen, Atlantic Ferg’s Lounge & My Tighe’s Restaurant, Grand Junction PerXactly’s Bar and Grill, Maquoketa Rosco’s, Norwalk Rube’s Steakhouse, Montour Sac City Bowling Center, Sac City The Ritz, Arnold’s Park “The Top Ten nominations are scattered throughout the state,” said Elaine Utesch, a Correctionville farmer who is chairman of the Iowa Beef Industry Council. “The nominations covered restaurants over 130 Iowa communities. That response shows that Iowans and Iowa restaurants know that burgers will always be a popular item. Restaurants love to make burgers and their cus-

tomers love to eat them.” “Although we won’t announce Iowa’s Best Burger until the first week of May, we encourage everyone to stop at one of the Top Ten restaurants for a burger,” Utesch stated. “Iowans have a very special place in their heart for burgers. The burger is the all-American classic served in almost every restaurant from the local café to the finest white tablecloth establishment.” Nominations for the contest were made from February 13 through March 16, 2012. The Top Ten restaurants were the top vote-getters when all on-line, paper and faxed ballots were counted. The top 10 restaurants will be visited by a secret panel of judges who will evaluate the nominee’s hamburgers by proper temperature for serving a ground beef patty, appearance and taste. The winner will be named the first week of May as a kick-off to May Beef Month, and will receive a plaque and a media prize package that will include an on-site live radio announcement. All Top Ten restaurants will receive a certificate. To continue to learn more about the contest,

visit www.iabeef.org or “friend” the Iowa Beef Council Facebook page. A map showing the locations of the Top Ten restaurants is on the page. Last year, 3,500 nominations for the Best Burger title were received. The winner was the Rusty Duck in Dexter, while Sac County Cattle Company of Sac City won the inaugural event in 2010.

A few extra steps for soybean farmers, one big step for soybean quality by Sharon Covert, United Soybean Board International Marketing Chair Each day keeps getting a little bit longer and warmer, which means it will soon be that time of year again—planting season. Farmers will soon be back in the field sowing this year’s soybean crop. Many farmers have complex management decisions to make each spring, but deciding which soybean variety to plant has become an increasingly difficult one. In the past few years, soybean seed treated with crop protection products have become very popular. These brightly colored seeds can help protect seedlings from pests and diseases, but farmers need to remember the importance of keeping treated seed and harvested oilseeds or grain separate. Our customers beyond the elevator have become increasingly sensitive to this issue, and negligence can threaten our relationship and income. For example, if a treated seed shows up in a shipment of soybeans in China, customers there will reject the entire load. To maintain our reputation as a leading supplier of high-quality soybeans and

grains, we need to properly handle and dispose of treated seed. After planting this spring, farmers should carefully inspect and thoroughly clean gravity boxes, truck beds, wagons and equipment that carried treated seed. Farmers with any unused treated seed are encouraged to contact their seed company to find out its policies for treated seed. Seed companies will offer guidelines on how to properly dispose of it, and some companies will even accept returns of treated seed. In order to protect the integrity of U.S. soy, it’s imperative for farmers to take the steps to ensure that treated seed does not mix with harvested soybeans, other oilseeds or grains. I understand that taking these extra steps can sometimes be hard to do, but properly disposing of treated seed can go a long way to ensure we all continue to produce a safe and abundant supply of food, fiber and feed. Have a safe planting season. Sharon Covert is a soybean farmer from Tiskilwa, Ill., and serves as International Marketing Committee Chair for the United Soybean Board and soy checkoff.

Department of Ag contest promotes the beauty of spring in Iowa The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is kicking off a “Spring Facebook Fun Photo Contest.” Iowans are invited to submit photos that showcase the beauty of spring in Iowa through the department’s Facebook page, which can be accessed through the department’s website at www.iowaagriculture.gov. The contest starts immediately and runs through May 31. The photos will be judged on the number of “likes” each photo re-

ceives and the winner will receive an award certificate from Iowa Secretary of State Bill Northey, naming them the first spring winner of what the department hopes to be an annual event. Last fall, Sharon Roberts, from Marengo, was the winner of the department’s first “Facebook Fall Fun Photo Contest.” Robert’s photo, which shows her son and grandson “Taking a little break,” earned 119 “Likes.” All of the photos can be seen on the department’s Facebook page.

A screenshot of the 2011 Fall Photo Contest folder shows some of the photos submitted last fall.

It’s an age-old problem in agriculture: ground-engaging tools – disks, coulters and wavy blades that penetrate soil and cut crop residues – eventually go dull. Until now, there was no way to realistically sharpen a wavy-bladed implement with dull blades. Babies and barns I love holding babies, the human ones anyway. Holding babies seems to calm me down when I’m stressed. Unfortunately, we don’t have any at our farm right now. We are starting to have new calves, though. My husband and sons seem to have fun finding the new babies and tagging them right away. Of course, a mama cow is always around to make sure that her calf is being treated right. We have a couple that are really protective of their calves, so the tagging process turns into a two-man show. My husband grabs and tags the calf while my oldest son keeps the mama cow at bay. Granted, the whole operation probably takes less than three minutes, but it still is a bit stressful for everyone involved. Last Saturday, when my oldest son was in town earning his Automotive Maintenance merit badge for Boy Scouts, my husband lost a calf. Well, the calf lost itself. It ran away. My little nine-year-old son

and husband traipsed around our neighbor’s pasture for an hour and still couldn’t find the newborn calf. The mama cow was yelling, but the calf was nowhere to be found. They went to sleep worried it wouldn’t be able to find its way back to the mama cow because it was a newborn. Now, here’s where I’m confused on the sequence of events because I really wasn’t paying attention and it all got very confusing. Somehow one of the electric fences went down, and they lost another cow on Sunday. They spent most of the afternoon repairing the fence and wondering if the cow was going to come back. Then, somewhere another cow had her baby in an unfortunate spot, but they couldn’t move it to where it was supposed to be because the calf was so new and couldn’t walk. So many weird and wacky things happened over the weekend, that I felt like one of the penguins from the Madagascar movies: “Just smile

and wave, boys. Smile and wave.” I just listened and nodded. In the end, by Monday night everyone was safe and sound where they were supposed to be. “Phew,” said my nineyear-old, relieved that everyone was home. I think he just didn’t want to go for another hike around the fields. Speaking of babies, my husband purchased a bred cow last fall that had been AI’ed and he thought that the due date was the end of February. With our 9year-old starting 4-H next year, we thought we should think about getting better cows so we could get 4-H quality show calves. My husband didn’t want the calf to be born in the field. So around the middle of February, the boys and he put the cow in our barn to have her calf. Then he went on an overnight trip with my youngest son with Cub Scouts, leaving my older son and me home to watch the cow. I’m not going to lie; I

THE

FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch was a bit nervous that the thing was going to have her calf AND have a problem doing so when he was gone. My son and I checked the cow a few times on the Friday night, and a few more times on Saturday morning. By the next week in March, I had the feeling that something was wrong, so I told my husband he should call the vet just to check things out.

After checking the cow, we looked at the AI due dates again and found the calf wasn’t due until the end of March! So, as I write this, the cow is still in the barn, waiting to have her baby. I don’t think I was pampered this much when I was pregnant with my two boys. I can’t wait to see the calf, though. He or she better be really cute, and ready to be shown next year by one of the boys at the fair with as much grief as we’ve had over it already. Speaking of which, both boys will be showing calves this year at various shows. My 9-year-old, even though he isn’t old enough for 4-H yet, will show his bottle calf from last year at a local youth show. I’m not entirely certain that I’m ready for both boys to be showing cattle at the same time. I think I might have to resort to yoga or breathing exercises to keep my calm. Or I could just find a baby to hold.

ISU students compete in “Soy You Think You Can Cook” On March 6, three teams of Iowa State University (ISU) students competed in the championship round of the second annual “Soy You Think You Can Cook” contest, creating dishes with recipes they had developed using edamame, silken tofu and/or water pack tofu. The contest was sponsored by The Soyfoods Council to develop awareness and interest in soy. The Soyfoods Council Executive Director Linda Funk, who judged the competition, said, “It is fun to see such innovation and to taste the creative ways students have found for handling soy. It is good for Iowa to come up with such interesting and delicious soyfood dishes. The Soyfoods Council will use these recipes at events across the country and with soybean farmers.” The competition grew from six teams last year to nine this year. Contestants

included culinary science, food science, nutrition, dietetics and hospitality majors. Ruth MacDonald, chair of ISU’s Food and Human Nutrition Department, said, “This contest is a great opportunity for students to be creative, work in a team and practice and show off what they’ve learned in class. It’s exciting.” ISU Culinary Science Coordinator Beirman, who advises students, teaches food preparation labs and supervises the internship program for culinary science students, teamed with The Soyfoods Council to organize the competition. She explained to the audience that, at each of three qualifying rounds, three teams had competed with one being selected at each for a spot in the final contest. Each team developed an entrée recipe as well as one side. In the first round, judges offered suggestions

was a seafood soup made with scallops, shrimp and featuring shrimp-stuffed tofu. Their side was a dip created with silken tofu, blended edamame, carmelized onions, mango chutney and curry, and served with baked pita chips. “This soup, with its stuffed tofu, could go up against any chef,” Funk said. “The broth is delicious. It is very innovative, both in flavor and presentation.” She also said the Vitality team’s dip was “a nice sweet and savory mix.” The Vitality teammates called their win “an exciting surprise!” They agreed that working together to develop their recipe was the best part of the experience. The Tasty Tofu team, which included Kayla Marsh of Maquoketa, and Kendall Olson of Mason City, both culinary science majors, took second place.

They served an open-faced edamame and crusted tofu sandwich on gluten-free bread. Their side dish was a raw butternut squash salad with edamame and cranberries. Marsh had been experimenting with raw food and tofu sandwiches prior to the contest, so they tweaked some of her recipes for the contest. Marsh and Olson, who entered because they enjoyed participating in the competition last year, said the most valuable part of the experience was competing together. Noting the trend toward raw food and also how important gluten-free cooking has become, the judges called their recipes timely and said they show how soy fits food trends. Funk noted that their raw butternut squash had particularly nice flavor The third place prize winners were the team Kung Fu

Tofu, comprised of Seon, Choi, and Taeuk, students from South Korea who had modified some of Seon’s mother’s recipes. They made tofuballs (like meatballs), made with tofu, chives, carrots, and onions. Their side was tofu yogurt, with orange and honey. The KungFu Tofu team said they got involved for “money and pride,” but found the most valuable part of the experience was cooking as a team. The judges expressed special appreciation for the interesting soy dishes the three had created with influence from their homeland’s cuisine. In awarding the prizes, Funk said she hopes to see the students’ recipes featured in food magazines. “I am thrilled with all of these. It is fun to see how the teams incorporated judges’ suggestions from the first round of competition and made improvements.”

for improving their recipes so the finalists could tweak and make improvements. On March 6, the three finalist teams prepared their dishes in the ISU Memorial Union in front of an audience of judges and fellow students, as well as prospective students and their parents. They were competing for the first, second, and third place prizes of $500, $300 and $200 respectively. Joining Funk and MacDonald to judge the championship round was Nancy Levandowski, director of ISU Dining, who said she looks forward to incorporating contest recipes in ISU Dining, to introduce soy to university students who might not otherwise try it. Lt. Gov. Reynolds and soybean leaders participate in trade mission to China and Thailand Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds joined several leaders of the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) on an 11-day trade mission to China and Thailand beginning March 16. The purpose of the trip is to further strengthen ties with those two nations and promote the U.S. soybean industry in two very important regions of the world. ISA representatives on the trip include Dean Coleman, board president; Mark Jackson, president-elect; Kirk Leeds, CEO; and Grant Kimberly, director of market development. Other participants are Brent Bunte, CEO of NEW Cooperative, and Rolly Svoboda, general manager of Pro Cooperative. Also partnering on the trip is AGP, a major processor of soybeans in the U.S. Jim Rodenberg, AGP corporate communications manager, will serve as photographer and be reporting for the group. The Iowa Soybean Association began planning the trip last fall, and the recent trip to Iowa by Vice President Xi allows the opportunity for this trip to continue the dialogue between Iowa and China. During that highly publicized trip, Vice President Xi met Lt. Governor Reynolds and other members of the ISA trade delegation. His trip included a visit at the Kimberley family farm at Maxwell. Grant Kimberley, who is participating in the trade mission, is one of the members of that farm family. China is the world’s biggest soybean importer and consumer, and Iowa is the U.S.’s

Vice President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China poses for a photo with Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds at the home of Sarah and Roger Lande, in Muscatine on February 15. The China connection began in 1985 when Lande helped coordinate a visit to Muscatine for a delegation headed by Xi, then an up-and-coming official in a hog-farming region of Hebei province, which was Iowa’s “sister state.” Apparently, the hospitality he received made such an impression that he wanted to return to Iowa during his United States visit that also includes stops in Washington, D.C. and California. one in every four rows of U.S. soybeans goes to China. During Vice President Xi’s recent U.S. trip, Chinese leaders signed agreements to purchase 492.3 million bushels (13.4 mil-

lion metric tons) of U.S. soybeans, with an estimated value of $6.7 billion. “Chinese Vice President Xi’s visit was a historic event for our state, and we have come to China to solidify the strong relationships that were forged in Iowa,” said Lt. Governor Reynolds. “As the leading producer of U.S. soybeans, we are proud of the role that Iowa and its crops have in nourishing strong ties between our two countries.” Leeds said, “Iowa’s soybean farmers are committed to a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship with China. We want to say ‘thank you for your business’ and to continue to build upon these strong relationships, as we provide a safe, reliable and sustainable source of soybeans for China.” On the itinerary is a full day of meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce and China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal by-products. The group will also meet with current and potential customers. Following China, the group will spend three days in Thailand, where their itinerary includes visits to a large feed company and a soybean crushing facility, as well as hosting an industry reception and dinner. A website for the trip has been created for the public to follow the trade team’s progress. Check out daily blog entries, Twitter feeds and audio interviews at www.iasoybeans.com/chinablog2012/

Pork Checkoff investment Extension and Outreach Week yields PRRS breakthrough to be celebrated March 25-31 Building on work originally funded by the Pork Checkoff, a consortium of scientists from around the country discovered a genetic marker in pigs that identifies whether or not a pig has a reduced susceptibility to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) - a disease that costs the U.S. pork industry an estimated $664 million per year. The researchers found a genetic marker, called a quantitative trait locus, on swine chromosome 4 that is associated with resistance to PRRS virus infection. According to Joan Lunney, a research scientist at the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Beltsville, Md., this is especially important since this location also is associated with improved growth of pigs that are infected with the PRRS virus. She says results indicate a positive effect for PRRS resistance and higher weight gain. “PRRS is one of the industry’s top ongoing issues, so this research discovery is a major step in the right direction,” said Lisa Becton, Pork Checkoff director of swine health and information. “Pork producers realize that supporting science-based research is not an overnight proposition. It’s especially gratifying to achieve results like this and to envision how they can be implemented at the farm level.” According to Chris Hostetler, Pork Checkoff director of animal science, the identification of the marker gene responsible for increasing resistance to PRRS will allow genetics companies to more easily place selection pressure on PRRS resistance, which in turn, could allow producers to introduce new “PRRS-resistant” lines into their herds. “This could be one of the tools used to help eliminate PRRS, but more importantly, this work may provide the

platform for finding similar marker genes responsible for conveying resistance to other economically devastating diseases,” Hostetler said. The research team that led to this marker discovery includes scientists at USDA’s ARS, Kansas State University and Iowa State University. The researchers continue to be funded by the PRRS Host Genetics Consortium, a nationwide effort originally funded by the National Pork Board; the Coordinated Agricultural Project program; the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Swine Genome Coordinator for the National Animal Genome Research Program. To obtain the data necessary for the marker research, researchers collected blood and tissue samples, along with weight-gain data, from 2,000 pigs at bio-secure facilities at Kansas State University. From there, ARS researchers performed genomic work at the facilities in Beltsville. Finally, Iowa State University researchers used the resulting genomic data to search the entire genome of all pigs from earlier trials done by the PRRS Host Genetics Consortium. They worked to identify chromosomal segments common to pigs that had lower levels of PRRS virus circulating in their blood and that grew faster after PRRS infection. Now that scientists have found a chromosomal segment that can signify resistance to PRRS, the next step is to pinpoint the gene and determine whether it shows the same effects for other strains of the PRRS virus. Checkoff-funded PRRS research results are available at pork.org. For more information, contact Lisa Becton at LBecton@pork.org or at (515) 2232791.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is promoting its educational programs during the statewide celebration of ISU Extension and Outreach Week, March 25 to 31. The observance will include activities on the Iowa State campus and at county offices. “The weeklong celebration is just one way we can say ‘thank you’ to the many volunteers, community leaders, organizations, agencies and other partners who support Extension and Outreach work in Iowa,” said Cathann Kress, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. Governor Terry Branstad will sign a proclamation on March 27 declaring the dates as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week. The week’s events will include open houses and activities hosted by ISU Extension and Outreach county offices. Extension and Outreach faculty and staff on campus also will share their stories. Iowa may contact their county office for details about local events. “As a land-grant university, Iowa State was founded on three big ideas: to open higher education to all, to teach practical classes and to share knowledge far beyond the campus borders,” Kress said. “ISU Extension and Outreach is dedicated to providing education that makes a difference in Iowans’ every day lives.” Extension and Outreach is part of an educational network supported by Iowa State University, local county governments and

National Biodiesel Day celebrated in March March 18 was National Biodiesel Day, and Iowa had reason to celebrate. Iowa is the number one producer of biodiesel, a cleaner-burning fuel that generates economic activity, supports Iowa jobs, and makes us more energy independent. Iowa’s entire Congressional delegation recently signed on to an effort to help expand the national use of biodiesel, a move applauded by the Iowa Biodiesel Board. Earlier this month, a bipartisan group of 60 members of Congress signed letters to the White House, urging the Obama Administration to follow through with a modest increase in the federal Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).

QUANDT

AUTO SALVAGE, INC.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed increasing the national biodiesel volumes to 1.28 billion gallons in 2013, up from 1 billion gallons in 2012. Signing the letters were the entire Iowa delegation Sen. Charles Grassley (R), Sen. Tom Harkin (D), Rep. Leonard Boswell (D), Rep. Tom Latham (R), Rep. Bruce Braley (D), Rep. Dave Loebsack (D), and Rep. Steve King (R). Despite record biodiesel production last year, Iowa’s plants have room to grow within their existing capacity. With smart growth of the RFS, these plants could support even more green jobs. “The fuel price swings we’ve seen should remind us of the very reason why Congress enacted the RFS,” said

Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board. “This is an extraordinarily effective policy that diversifies our energy supplies and limits our exposure to price spikes, while supporting green jobs at home.” Biodiesel is an advanced biofuel made from agricultural byproducts and co-products like soybean oil. “Biodiesel also provides the trucking industry a great alternative to high-priced diesel,” Olson said. Rudolf Diesel, who invented the engine that bears his name, ran early models on peanut oil. He was a visionary for the renewable fuel that would one day be called biodiesel. That’s why the biodiesel industry decided to honor Diesel by making his birthday, March 18, National Biodiesel Day.

It pays to be an early riser. Case IH Early Riser planters produce a superior seed environment that leads to better plant stands. The Case IH Early Riser row unit reduces seedling stress from sidewall compaction and poor seed placement. These row units, combined with the superior Case IH Advanced Seed Meter, give your crop the best combination of in-row seed spacing and early, even emergence.

Iowa Swine Day returns to ISU For the first time in several years, the Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) and Iowa State University (ISU) are sponsoring a daylong educational opportunity specifically for pork producers. Iowa Swine Day is set for June 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the ISU campus, and features practical information on a variety of topics that can be applied on the farm. IPIC director John Mabry said similar events were held some time ago with great success, and that helped organizers decide to bring back the event this year.

Iowa Pork Producers Association and ISU Extension and Outreach also are assisting with the program. “This program offers an in-depth look at a number of current topics by recognized experts,” Mabry said. “All sessions are in Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building on the ISU campus, and each 30-minute session is followed by a question and answer segment. There are no breakout sessions.” Cost is $25 per person when registered by June 15, and increases to $35 per person after that date. The fee includes

lunch, refreshment breaks and a copy of the conference proceedings. See more information, including links to the registration options, on the conference website here http://www.aep.iastate.edu/iowaswineday/homepage.html Each program topic provides essential information for today’s pork producers and others in the industry, and speakers were selected for their knowledge and understanding of those topics. The list of topics and speakers follows: Managing risk in uncertain times – Shane Ellis, ISU economics

Preventing and managing pit foaming – Steve Hoff, ISU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering What is being learned and done in the battle against the PRRS virus: Are we winning? – Derald Holtkamp, ISU Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine How to prioritize your biosecurity practices – Alex Ramirez, ISU Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Capturing energy savings through proper ventilation management – Jay Harmon,

ISU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Motivating and keeping employees – Darra Johnson, MurphyBrown, LLC, Ames Practical and effective ways to improve feed efficiency and reduce feed cost – John Patience, ISU Animal Science U.S. pork exports: Opportunities and risks – Dermot Hayes, ISU Economics The 101 of swine welfare: What should I know? – Anna Johnson, ISU Animal Science IPIC was established in

1994 as a coordinated effort of the colleges of Agriculture (now Agriculture and Life Sciences) and Veterinary Medicine at ISU. Its mission is to promote efficient pork production technologies in Iowa, maintain Iowa’s pork industry leadership and strengthen rural development efforts. IPIC focuses its efforts on programs that are integral and complimentary to ISU Extension. Through IPIC, Iowa producers receive accurate and timely information to make their operations more efficient and profitable.

Energy demonstration grants awarded to three Iowa farmers The Iowa Farm Energy Working Group has awarded three demonstration grants for 2012 to Iowa farmers with small to mid-sized operations to demonstrate how they can reduce fossil fuel use and meet their energy needs through energy efficiency or the use of renewable resources from on their farms. The University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE) facilitates the working group, which is funded by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University. “These grants will help develop demonstration projects so other farmers can see firsthand how the technology works and learn about costs and suppliers,” said Carole Yates, working group facilitator and a CEEE program manager. “Adopting technologies using on-farm resources for small and mid-sized farms offers many ways for farmers to reduce their energy use.” All recipients will present a demonstration of their projects later in 2012. Jim Fitkin, Waterloo, plans to make a biogas digester to heat a 30 x 72’ high tunnel to extend his growing season in the spring and fall. He sells his produce (popcorn for this project) at local markets and other outlets. For onfarm resources, he will use waste from crops and animals to make biogas; use the biogas to heat the high tunnel; and put the compost left from the biogas back onto the hoop house soil. Larry Reiling, Fairfield Farm near Calmar, will design an automated stoker feed wood waste boiler system to heat storage trailers, a shop, and a wash facility for vegetables, potatoes and onions. Reiling will construct a boiler building, wood storage facility, and install the boiler. The wood boiler heating system will use wood from the farm to reduce reliance on natural gas, propane, and other heating means. The project will generate a complete bill of materials of purchase parts and a system manual to allow other Iowa farmers to replicate the idea. Harn Soper, Soper Farms, Emmetsburg, will provide design/performance values for a CoolBot System to cool a vegetable building walk-in cooler. The project will evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of using a CoolBot system, “ground truth” the company’s claim of reduced electricity use as a cooling system; and provide a design example and recommendations for any farmer interested in implementing a CoolBot system for vegetable cooling. The Iowa Farm Energy Working Group includes representatives from agriculture, policy, higher education, utility, and farm organizations plus others with an interest or expertise in meeting on-farm energy needs from energy efficiency and renewable resources available on the farm. Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food New web resource maps USDA support for local and regional food projects, highlights business opportunities for farmers, ranchers and growers Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food (KYF) Compass, is an interactive web-based document and map highlighting USDA support for local and regional food projects and successful producer, business and community case studies. Kathleen Merrigan, Agriculture Deputy Secretary, recently emphasized how local and regional food systems across the country create additional economic opportunities for farmers, ranchers and food entrepreneurs, expand healthy food access and meet growing customer demand. “Every day USDA is working to strengthen American agriculture, which helps drive job growth and supports farm-family income,” said Merrigan. “The KYF Compass highlights how USDA’s support for local and regional food systems has brought additional opportunities to our country’s farmers, ranchers, processors, distributors and food entrepreneurs. The stories and maps in the Compass underscore how diverse and innovative American agriculture can be.” The KYF Compass is a digital guide to USDA resources related to local and regional food systems. The Compass consists of an interactive U.S. map showing local and regional food projects and an accompanying narrative documenting the results of this work through case studies, photos and video content. The KYF Compass organizes USDA’s work on local and regional food systems into seven thematic areas. Among the themes covered on the map and in the narrative portion of the Compass are: Local Food Infrastructure: maps USDA support for food hubs, cold storage facilities, local food processors and other infrastructure and examines how this infrastructure keeps wealth in rural communities Farm to Institution: examines programs to connect local food producers and institutions and the results of these initiatives for healthy food access, farm incomes, and students’ understanding of agriculture Careers in Agriculture: discusses USDA support for young and beginning farmers and ranchers, as well as opportunities to get involved in agriculture through food business development and public service, and the importance of this work to creating vibrant rural communities

Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food (KYF) Compass, pictured above, is a digital guide to USDA resources related to local and regional food systems. Citizens are urged to visit the site to learn more about their food sources.

Stewardship and Local Foods: explains how local food producers are implementing environmentally sustainable practices on their farms and ranches to preserve farmland, forests and natural landscapes across the country Local Meat and Poultry: showcases resources for local meat and poultry producers and small processors to succeed in local markets Healthy Food Access: highlights tools to connect farmers and ranchers underserved communities to increase access to healthy food for consumers and economic opportunities for producers Local Food Knowledge: tracks existing research and identifies opportunities for further understanding of local and regional food systems and their impacts. “By encouraging all Americans to know their farmer, USDA is helping consumers learn more about agriculture and the people producing your food,” said Merrigan. “The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative helps farmers and ranchers tap into a vibrant, growing market opportunity. And it’s also stimulating a broader

national conversation about where our food comes from and how important agriculture is to our country.” A large selection of USDA-supported programs and projects is also visible on the KYF Map, which can be displayed by theme, program, or recipient type. Both the KYF Compass and map will be regularly refreshed with new data and case studies. In September 2009, USDA launched the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative to coordinate USDA resources and expertise on local and regional food systems. The KYF Compass documents the ways in which USDA has collaborated across its 17 agencies and additional offices, enhanced transparency and met congressional mandates from the 2008 Farm Bill on local and regional food. KYF is not a separate USDA program or agency. It is a management initiative to increase interagency coordination. For more information and to join the national conversation, please visit the ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food’ website, at www.usda.gov/knowyourfarmer.
