Nebraska Cowgirls & Cowboys Steven Dent - Mullen Was married Oct. 17, 2009 to wife Kay. After missing three months of competition due to a knee injury in the summer of 2009, he returned to action in the fall and scored 88 points on six-time Bareback Riding Bucking Horse of the Year Grated Coconut of the Calgary Stampede string at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo. A bronze sculpture of Dent riding a bucking horse was unveiled at the 2009 Ellensburg Rodeo. The bareback riding sculpture was the final event represented to complete the collection to commemorate the rodeo. Favorite event is saddle bronc riding, but he's most consistent in bareback riding. Went to about 100 rodeos his rookie year (2006). Participated in high school football, wrestling, track and field and rodeo. Halsey, Neb. – If anyone’s worried about the next generation sitting in front of a computer screen too much, they need to meet Chauncey Hesseltine. Chauncey, a senior from Thedford High School, loves to be on the go and can’t stand to sit around. That is most apparent at high school rodeos, where Chauncey competes in four events: team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding. The Halsey, Neb. resident is a member of the Nebraska State High School Rodeo Association, and grew up roping with his dad as he worked on area ranches. He began competing as a roper in junior and junior high rodeos and soon added the saddle bronc riding and bull riding. He was the state champion bull rider in 8th grade and reserve champion breakaway roper the same year. Chauncey tried riding barebacks last year, but quit because he didn’t like the event. “I didn’t like the beating it took on my body. Saddle broncs and bull riding doesn’t hurt as bad.” He was on the honor roll all four years of high school and a member of the FCLA for three years. He played basketball as a freshman and sophomore before deciding to quit to devote more time to rodeo practice. Just a month ago, he decided to add steer wrestling to his repertoire. “I took up the steer wrestling for the fun of it, to say I’ve done every event in rodeo,” Chauncey said. He had competed in tie-down roping in junior high. His competition in four rodeo events puts him in the running for the all-around title, the most desirable award in rodeo given to the athlete who wins the most in two or more events. Chauncey is in second place behind Jay Simonson, and close enough that with nine more high school rodeos this season, he could overtake him. Chauncey has competed at the state high school finals rodeo in Hastings the last two years, qualifying for the National High School Finals Rodeo both years. In 2011, he went in the bull riding, and in 2010, he qualified in the saddle bronc riding. His rodeo talents have garnered him a full ride scholarship to Vernon (Texas) Community College, where he’ll compete on the rodeo team. He’s thinking about a degree in criminal justice. And if he’s not rodeoing, he’s doing something outdoors. “I don’t like to sit in the house and watch TV. It gets boring and makes me grumpy.” Chauncey has four younger siblings who all compete in rodeo. They are the children of Harald and Julie Hesseltine.

USS Nebraska Sailors Travel in Style North Platte, Neb. – Lynn Meyer is a collector of beautiful old horse drawn vehicles. And every June, he gets to put one of them to work, carrying dignitaries at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. Meyer, Maxwell, Neb., has been driving a fifth wheel hitch wagon, pulled by a team of four horses, into the Wild West Arena in North Platte for at least the last twenty years, he estimates. His freight? The sailors from the USS Nebraska, stationed at Bangor, Wash., who are guests of NEBRASKALand Days. The Meyer family, beginning with Lynn’s dad, Cliff, has been in the draft horse business since 1961. Lynn’s dad, and then Lynn, fed hay in the winter and stacked it in the summer with six head of horses. The Meyers have shown draft horses since the early 1960’s, and also compete in farm draft shows across the nation. Meyer has collected a variety of horse drawn vehicles over the years. His collection includes a chuckwagon, a one-horse driving cart, and a farm wagon. The Buffalo Bill Rodeo isn’t the only place where he drives a team of horses. He often participates in the NEBRASKALand Days parade, and drives the Cozad Chamber of Commerce Yellowstone Touring Coach for parades in Sutherland and Maxwell and for the opening of the dress horse classes at the Nebraska State Fair. For the last fifteen years, he’s driven the farm wagon for the Nebraska State Corn Picking Contest. The fifth wheel hitch wagon that Meyer uses to carry the USS Nebraska sailors is about 100 years old. He found it near Bridgeport, Neb. with original hardware, rebuilt the wheels and put on a new wooden box and chrome rails. Meyer drives the wagon in the arena during the Friday and Saturday nights of rodeo and loves hauling the sailors. “It’s

quite an honor for us to haul them,” he said. “I’ve always felt real privileged to get the job of hauling them.” Meyer said the North Platte people love recognizing the sailors. “This area is especially patriotic. North Platte takes good care of them, and the crowd sure seems to enjoy seeing the sailors.” In addition to his hobby of raising and showing draft horses, the Meyers ranch. The Meyer Triangle L Ranch is in the third generation of the family, and horses run in the family. Lynn and his wife Linda have five grandkids, and “they were all horseback from the minute they were big enough to straddle a saddle horse.” Meyer’s son partners on the ranch. A daughter and her husband live on the ranch, and a second daughter lives in Arizona. Meyer is proud of being a recipient of the Dale Studley award, given annually to a NEBRASKALand Days volunteer who gives selflessly of his time and talent. He received the award in 2006. “I felt quite honored,” he said. “It made the front page of the paper. A small town boy, from Maxwell, getting in the local paper. That’s good.” Meyer and his fifth wheel hitch wagon will be at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo June 13-16 at NEBRASKALand Days.

Miss Rodeo America 2012

McKenzie Carr

20 Rodeo Nebraska / Summer 2012

Mackenzie Carr of Vernonia, Oregon reigns as Miss Rodeo America 2012. She received the crown on December 10, 2011 at the conclusion of the week-long pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada in conjunction with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Mackenzie will travel more than 100,000 miles during her reign representing Miss Rodeo America, Inc. and the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association. "Miss Rodeo America is a spokeswoman for western heritage, embodying and exemplifying the qualities of self-reliance, bravery, and true grit to the utmost capability." Carr said. "I am so blessed to be the first Oregonian to have the prestigious honor and privilege of serving as Miss Rodeo America." Mackenzie graduated from Lower Columbia College with an Associate of Arts degree in Speech Communications and will later transfer back to Oregon State University

pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management Engineering with a minor in Speech Communications. She will be taking time out from her studies at Oregon State University to reign as the "First Lady of Professional Rodeo." She will be able to use the $26,000 in scholarships she was awarded as Miss Rodeo America from the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation to help further her educational goals. When Mackenzie isn't promoting the sport of rodeo either in or out of the arena, she enjoys cooking, singing and playing the piano. She also loves to dig it up and slam it down on the volleyball court, riding, training horses and giving riding lessons to young children. She is excited about the prospect of spending 2012 traveling across the country being a role model for people of all ages, remaining a cowgirl to the core and promoting the Miss Rodeo America organization as well as our great sponsors!

Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2012

Sierra Peterson

My name is Sierra Peterson, and I am the daughter of Mark and Kate Peterson of Ashland, NE. I had the honor and privilege of being crowned Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2012 during the MRN Association Inc. pageant in June at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo held in conjunction with the NEBRASKAland Days celebration in North Platte. Growing up on the eastern side of the state, my rodeo background doesn't always fit the mold. But, my love for horses and the sport drove me to pursue a position where I can be an ambassador for both future and current rodeo fans. My family plays a large part in my success. They are all involved in rodeo and continue to show me every day how to influence and mentor others with the sport we love. I hold a degree in public relations from Oklahoma Christian University. In college, I was heavily involved in intramurals, campus clubs, and a

mentoring program. I plan to further my education and pursue a career working for one of the sponsors of rodeo once my reign is completed. Over the next year I will represent the state of Nebraska, the sport of rodeo, and the western way of life. Along with these things, I will also serve as an ambassador for the Teammates Mentoring program and the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Association, Inc. The motto, I want to carry not only for my year as MRN, but also through the rest of my life is “Enjoy the Ride.” My 4-H leader gave me this advice right before I competed in the MRN Association Inc. pageant. It reminded me that each moment is a blessing we only get once, so take every opportunity to make memories and enjoy your time. Always remember life happens in the blink of an eye, so all you can do is “Enjoy the Ride.”

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Rodeo Champion Serves As Volunteer Phillipsburg, KS – Rodeo champions rarely show up at a rodeo to volunteer. But that’s exactly what has happened in Phillipsburg. The 1978 steer wrestling champion of Kansas' Biggest Rodeo now gives of his time as a volunteer at the same rodeo. John Boyington was in college when he won the steer wrestling over 30 years ago, and he was about to start veterinarian school. He had been competing in the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association, and he knew that summer was “my last hurrah,” as he put it. So he went to a lot of rodeos, steer wrestling in Denver, Houston, Ft. Worth, Cheyenne, Tucson, Calgary, and Phillipsburg, winning enough money to qualify for the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo that fall. The Phillipsburg resident grew up in Goodland with parents who support his and his siblings’ rodeo activities. After being accepted into Kansas State University’s vet school in the spring of 1978, he continued his pro rodeo career, knowing that once vet school began, everything outside of school would be curtailed. The Prairie Circuit Finals in Wichita was the last professional rodeo in which he competed. In 1978, “I stopped rodeoing at that point. I was at the peak of my (rodeo) career, but had to make a decision between rodeo or vet school.” His focused shifted because “they weren’t going to flunk me out of vet school. It was too difficult to get in.” After graduation in 1982, Dr. Boyington practiced in Missouri, Texas and Ulysses, Kansas, before opening his own practice, Crossroads Vet Clinic, in Phillipsburg in 1990. He served on the Kansas' Biggest Rodeo board for about 14 years, and for the last seven years has coordinated the rodeo’s ticket sales, ordering tickets and organizing help for the ticket office. He has also volunteered his professional expertise as the official rodeo veterinarian for the last 21 years, being on site for every performance of the rodeo.

Being an equine vet and a former contestant, he has a unique perspective of pro rodeo. “You realize how important (horses) are to these rodeo contestants. A lot of people don’t realize what goes into making a rodeo horse. Their horse is their livelihood.” His championship win at the Phillipsburg rodeo John Boyington won the came about a month after steer wrestling at Kansas' he got married. For him Biggest Rodeo before starting and his new bride, Donna, the stop in Phillipsburg, his own vet practice in along with other rodeos, Phillispburg, Kansas in 1990. was “a rodeo honeymoon.” An avid rodeo competitor herself, Donna was the perfect traveling partner. “It was good times back then.” Rodeo “was really in my blood,” Boyington said. “Just like a lot of different sports, you get obsessed with them. I thought I had the talent to go on and maybe make it to the National Finals Rodeo.” John and Donna have two children: a son who is a student at Kansas State, and a daughter in high school. Both participated in equine activities and enjoy horses. Boyington is still surprised to think that he has a practice in the same community where he won a gold buckle. He’s won more than a championship in Phillipsburg, but also a home. “It’s a wonderful community. Being in a small town, you know everyone. It’s a great place to live and raise a family.”
