During his college career, Chytka worked for the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition, assisting Nebraska ranchers in evaluating range conditions and teaching range monitoring methods. In May, Chytka received his Master of Arts degree in Science-Education from Chadron State College, where he also earned a Bachelor of Science in Range Management. He is a 2006 graduate of Hemingford High School and competes in calf roping. “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful,” Chytka advises students and rodeo athletes. As a calf roper, he is a member of the Mountain States Circuit of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and amateur in Nebraska rodeo associations. Fall semester classes at NCTA begin Monday, August 26, with the rodeo season kick-off Sept. 13-14 at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, WI. NCTA athletes will compete in five fall contests, as part of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, Great Plains Region. Chytka will be assuming some of the teaching duties previously held by Professor Dave Smith, who retired in December, 2012. For information, contact Dr. Douglas Smith or Mr. Chytka in the NCTA-APS Office at (308) 3675293, or see NCTA.unl.edu.

Team Penning, Sorting Drawing More Riders to Nebraska State Fair Amy Schweitzer, The Grand Island Independent Team penning and ranch sorting are becoming so popular at the Nebraska State Fair that the number of teams competing has doubled since last year. Jen Vondrak of Lake View, Iowa, and Monica Williams of St. Paul were busy Tuesday, August 27, morning checking in riders from as far away as Arizona and Illinois for team penning. They said the number of sorting teams on Monday doubled to 650. The final count for teams in the penning wasn’t in, but most of the competitors entered both events. Team penning includes three riders who try to sort three cattle that have a certain number on their backs out of a herd. The team doesn’t know which number they will get until they are in the arena. The team then chases the three cattle down to the other end of the arena and contains them in a three-sided pen. If a cow with another number is allowed to the end of the
arena with the pen, the team is disqualified. Points also are deducted if not all three animals with the team’s number are in the pen. The first class of team penning was "open," meaning the team could consist of any three riders. Each team penning rider has a rating for experience and skill. In the "No. 10 class," the three riders’ numbers couldn’t add up to more than a 10, and in the "No. 6 class," the riders’ scores couldn’t be above a 6, Vondrak explained. Each competitor is allowed to be on five different teams, so several of the riders explained that while there is a healthy competition between teams, it is friendly because your nearest competitors may be your teammates in the next class. Williams said only about 20 to 30 percent of the team penning riders at the State Fair were from Nebraska. "They came from at least 11 different states this year," Continued on page 15

Bronc Rider Didn’t Start Life as a Cowboy Ruth Nicolaus, Contributing Writer Wyatt Gewinner didn’t start life as a cowboy. A lot of rodeo cowboys grow up on ranches, riding horses since they were babies, with moms and dads who were contestants. But not Wyatt. His parents are as far removed from rodeo as possible, his dad an ex-Marine on security detail at the White House for President Reagan, and his mother a teacher in Maryland. Wyatt, who is 17, didn’t even see his first rodeo till he was fourteen. He watched the bareback riding at the pro rodeo in Lincoln, Neb., in 2010 and “I thought it looked fun, and wanted to try it.” A neighboring family near his home in Weeping Water, Neb., helped him begin to rodeo. Bump and Leesa Kraeger’s three sons all grew up around horses and competed in high school rodeo, and they were instrumental in “getting me on track with horses.” Wyatt started high school rodeo competition that spring, and “that whole first year was not very pretty at all,” he remembers. Bareback riding isn’t the easiest event to learn, especially when a person hasn’t been around horses. But Wyatt was determined. “Then I started to get the hang of it.” And he certainly did. His perseverance paid off. Wyatt quit basketball and retired from track and football, to focus on rodeo. His sophomore year, he won two of the three rounds and the year-end bareback title at the state high school finals in Hastings, and this summer, he won all three rounds and repeated as year-end champion. He’s competing in the Mid-States Rodeo Association and the Nebraska State Rodeo Association, and anxiously awaiting March 7, the day he turns 18, so he can join the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. Wyatt’s intense focus goes beyond bareback riding. In
December, he’ll graduate a semester early so he can go to farrier school, and ride professionally in March. Then he’ll wait for a rodeo scholarship, in hopes of collegiate rodeo. The rodeo scholarship should be coming, as well as an academic scholarship: Wyatt held a 4.0 grade point average last year. Wyatt, whose last name is pronounced “gwenner,” has had a chance to shadow the pro rodeo cowboys. Kraeger and another high school rodeo dad, Gordon Simonson, introduced him to bareback rider Steven Dent. Dent grew up around rodeo, on the family ranch near Mullen, but he and Wyatt share one thing: a steely intensity on bareback riding. Wyatt got to hang around with Dent, a five time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) qualifier, as he competed at the American Royal in Kansas City in 2011. “That was a good weekend,” Wyatt recalled. “I got to talk to everybody (bareback riders) in the top ten in the world.” Wyatt’s riding has matured, and he’s competing better than he ever has. He was selected to the Bloomer Trailer Team in April of 2012, and “that’s when I started doing better. I felt more motivation to do better, and it gave me that extra boost to do good for the team.” Wyatt finished thirteenth in the nation at the National High School Finals Rodeo this past July, and has competed at the International Finals Youth Rodeo three times, finishing in the top five all three years. The ultimate goal is to “stay in pro rodeo as long as I can, and compete at the top.” The top, in pro rodeo, is the WNFR, and to compete alongside Steven Dent “would be awesome.” He and Dent stay in touch, and Wyatt looks up to him. “He’s a fellow Nebraskan, and a good guy all around. I’d like to try to be like him.” And with Wyatt’s dedication and rosin-like grip on bareback riding, there’s a good chance of being able to cheer on another Nebraskan at the WNFR.

Field Trip Fun Hastings rodeo provides lesson on Nebraska history, the west HASTINGS, NE — The fourth graders in Mrs. Truitt’s classroom at St. Michael’s Elementary School in Hastings have something to look forward to when they start school. In a few weeks, they’ll go on a field trip. This isn’t your typical field trip. This is the annual Kids’ Day at the Oregon Trail Rodeo in Hastings, where the nine and ten year olds get a taste of Nebraska history, horses and bulls, and rodeo. Mrs. Truitt has been bringing her students to the Adams County Fairgrounds since the program started in 1996, and it’s a good learning experience for her kids. Since Nebraska studies are required fourth grade curriculum, “this program goes very well with our Nebraska history,” she said. Students are rotated among four different sessions. One session discusses rodeo history, Buffalo Bill Cody’s part in

Nebraska history (he brought his wild west show to Hastings five times), and the safety of rodeo animals. Two other sessions focus on the rodeo events: roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, barrel racing and bronc riding, and the final session is a visit with rodeo personnel: the bullfighters, announcer, rodeo clown, and stock contractor. The kids enjoy most the animals and the rodeo personnel, Mrs. Truitt said. “They get to pet the horses, and get to talk to the rodeo clowns. A lot of the kids at St. Michael’s are city kids, so it’s a neat experience for them. And we have some Hispanic children from Mexico and we talk about the rodeo they have there. “I just think it’s a real neat experience from a community standpoint, and how everybody works together, and how Willis (Hunt, the organizer), and his crew are well organized. They keep it moving. With a group of nine and ten year olds, their attention span isn’t very long, and it’s important to keep things moving for them.” Willis Hunt has organized the Kids’ Day since it began in 1996. Last year, sixteen schools from Hastings to Grand Island to Sandy Creek and beyond, brought 515 kids. After they have completed the sessions, they are given a free pop and a small gift. Mrs. Truitt’s class packs a sack lunch and they eat on the fairgrounds. This year’s Kids’ Day was August 30.

LINCOLN, NE — The Nebraska Horse Council is pleased to announce that Greenwood artist Janna Harsch’s Friesian Fantasy Copper III was selected as the Official Artwork of the Nebraska Horse Expo 2013. Harsch’ winning design was selected by a panel of judges and will be used to promote Expo 2013 on its website, posters, programs and souvenir merchandise during the event held November 15th to 17th, 2013, at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Harsch’s unique piece is a part of a series created by grinding and heat-treating sheets of copper, then sketching the figure directly on the surface and finally using an alkyd (fast drying oil paint) to paint the figure in thin glazes. These thing layers of paint are translucent and allow the layers as well as the reflections in the metal itself to show through. “Horses are all about movement and are a great image to use to express a dynamic, moving feeling,” explains Harsch, who received her Bachelors degree in Studio Art from Concordia College (now Concordia University in Seward, NE) and whose artwork has graced magazines, calendars and book covers. “I wanted to use the reflective patterns created by grinding the metal surface to portray the movement in Friesian Fantasy Copper III. I particularly love how the coloration in the metal and grinding work together in this piece to enhance the pose’s feeling of running toward the viewers.” Horses are Harsch’s favorite subject, although she also enjoys painting and drawing the human figure as well as other animals. “I started drawing before I can remember,” said Harsch. “I drew saddles on everything with four legs— from moose to hippo—in a set of animal encyclopedias my folks had when I was just starting school. I advanced my horse drawing abilities with the help of a number of Learn to Draw books and took every available art class in school.” And her talent has not gone unnoticed. Hirsch's artwork has been part of exhibitions in fine art shows and galleries throughout Nebraska as well as in California, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Wyoming. Pink Raises Money
Big check presentations were made for the Tough Enough to Wear Pink at this year’s Kansas Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg. More than $9,000 was raised to fight cancer.
PHILLIPSBURG , KS — Rodeo fans in Phillipsburg are generous. During the rodeo’s annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on August 1, $9,750 was donated to the Phillips County Relay for Life. The money was raised in part by fans wearing pink. For every fan in pink, the rodeo committee gave one dollar. Prairie Horizon Agri-Energy, Channel Seeds (Josh and Melissa McClain), and Mehling Spraying Services (Jeff and Danille Landen) all matched the rodeo’s donation, dollar for dollar. The Chamber of Commerce and Phillips County Hospital donated to the cause, and Prairie Horizon employees, Prairie Dusters drill team members,
family and friends passed the hat to pick up more donations. In the eight years since the rodeo began its pink night, more than $38,000 has been donated to fight cancer. Tough Enough to Wear Pink is a nationwide campaign held at rodeo and equine events, with events raising money for cancer funding. In the pro rodeo world, $14.5 million has been raised for local and national breast cancer charities. This year’s Phillipsburg rodeo was August 1-3. Next year’s event will be July 31-August 2, 2014. Clowning Around at the Rodeo HASTINGS, NE — If life had turned out just a little bit differently, John Harrison would be an accountant, sitting behind a desk pushing papers. But luckily for rodeo fans, he’s not. Instead, the Soper, Okla. cowboy entertains rodeo fans across the nation with his trick riding, humor and walk and talk. At a rodeo when he was six, he watched the trick riders and specialty acts entertain, and he was enthralled. “I was caught up in the glamour of it,” he remembers. “The crowd cheered for them, and they were the stars of the rodeo, and who everybody talked about when they left.” So he began taking trick riding lessons, and his dad taught him to trick rope, in the dining room of the house. “We tore up everything from tile and grout to plaster on the ceiling,” John laughs. “Mom was always yelling at us, and I was always knocking something down.” By the time he was in college, he was already working rodeos. After graduating with a degree in agricultural business, he went straight into the rodeo world. In 1999 he became a member of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. He started with roman riding, trick riding, and trick roping, and added comedy to his repertoire. Now, he’s best known for his comedy and “walk and talk” banter with the announcer during each rodeo. John grew up in the shadow of a legend, with world champion bull rider Freckles Brown as his granddad. But he never knew much about Freckles when he was a kid. “I knew him more as granddad and not as a famous rodeo figure. I learned more about him through rodeoing, and being around (announcers) Hadley Barrett and Clem McSpadden. Those guys would sit down and tell you stories.” His granddad would often take John to the livestock sale barn, and John bought his first cow with him. When Freckles stepped away to get a cup of coffee, four year old John waved the bidding stick. “I bought two cows,” John says. His granddad “just laughed and hauled them back to the sale barn the next week.” This is the second year John has worked the Oregon Trail Rodeo.
TEAM PENNING, SORTING Continued from page 7 she said. The farthest away were from Arizona and Illinois, but plenty were from surrounding states, as well as Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. David Horn from Piedmont, S.D., said he and his wife come to Nebraska to compete every year in both ranch sorting — a two-person team sport — and team penning. "We go all over," Horn said, adding that they have competed in Colorado and Texas. He said he used to ranch but doesn’t anymore, and team penning is one way to reconnect to those roots. Kent Poss of Cotesfield said the team penning event isn’t too different from what he does on his ranch. "This is a little more intense, though," he said. Sorting cattle and riding a horse are what he likes about the sport. Williams and Vondrak said that surprisingly only about 20 to 30 percent of the competitors actually work on a ranch. "For many that come from other states, it is a hobby," Vondrak said. It used to be more of a local ranchers event but is growing in popularity among those who don’t ranch for a living. This was Poss’ first time competing at the State Fair, although he competes in local team pennings. "It’s a lot of fun," he said. "I just wanted to see what the big show was all about." Vondrak said team penning is a good family event. "There are plenty of families that travel in to compete for a couple days," she said, adding that the kids come along and root for their parents in the arena.

She’s always trying to help people to be better.” Steffes, Vail, S.D., is a motivator for Jenna because “she is young, funny, and has made it to the NFR, proving you can do it young.” As for Churchill, from Valentine, Jenna looks up to her because she’s a Photo by Stefanie Yoder Nebraskan. “To see one of our Nebraska horses and a Nebraska lady go to the NFR, that’s pretty cool.” When the Wrangler NFR is aired on TV, she stays up to watch the barrel racing, which is the second to last event. “Mom and I are always yelling (at the TV), just hoping that every barrel racer who gets to go there has a clean, safe run.” Her mom, Mary, travels with her to her many barrel racing competitions and clinics. “The happiest days of my life are going with her,” Mary says. “Even though there are days we are screaming at each other, in the end, I’d never trade it off.” The death of a child 25 years ago has helped Mary reconfigure her priorities. Her son Shad’s death “really aligned our family. The things we thought were important were really not that important. It was more important to spend that time, and to really live it, as if it is your last.” Jenna has three brothers: James, 27, Dusty, 25, and Luke, 16. In addition to her mom, Mary, her father is Gary Davie. Jenna is an honor roll student and volunteers at the Lydia House in Omaha.

Harsch continues to be inspired by the magnificence of the horse, creating original pieces that are purchased by lovers of equine art around the country. Friesian Fantasy Copper III was purchased by Linda Blakely of Middleburgh, New York, who already owned three of Janna’s pieces. “I had previously seen only a few Friesian horses at events in my area (in upstate New York) and was struck by how Janna had captured exactly those features that had first impressed me about the breed, being its powerful draft-horse physique but its graceful and nimble movements. The piece currently resides above my piano where its beautiful textures catch the changing natural light through a sliding door across the room, as well as the flickering light from my fireplace in winter. Not being artistically gifted myself, I marvel each time I see this lovely piece.” Harsch’s advice to aspiring young artists? “Draw. Draw. Draw. Study the art of the past as well as current works. Go to museums and workshops, read about artists in your area of interest and find or create some kind of ‘art support network’ who you can bounce ideas off of and get critiques and feedback from.” By having her work selected to represent Expo 2013, Harsch will receive a package of all items produced with the winning design, two 3-day passes to the Expo, and a vendor booth during the show. Harsch will also be presenting a “How to Draw Horses” Workshop during the Expo on Saturday, November 16th (more information on the workshop will be available in the near future at www.NebraskaHorseExpo.org).

Miss Rodeo America 2013 Chenae Shiner of Roosevelt, Utah reigns as Miss Rodeo America 2013. She received the crown on December 12, 2012 at the conclusion of the week-long pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in conjunction with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Chenae will travel more than 100,000 miles during her reign representing Miss Rodeo America, Inc. and the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association. “For me, queens embrace the spirit of rodeo, never hesitating to turn a spectator into a true fan.” Shiner said. “To represent this rodeo family as an ambassador would be my greatest honor.” Chenae obtained an Associates Degree from Utah State University and is currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Radiologic Sciences with a special emphasis in Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT). She will be taking time out from her studies at Weber State University to reign as the “First Lady of Professional Rodeo.” She will be able to use the $22,500 in scholarships she was awarded as Miss Rodeo America from the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation to help further her educational goals. As a WPRA card holder, Chenae proudly says that rodeo is her favorite sport! She truly feels at home on their family ranch where branding or herding 600 head of cattle can’t be beat! She also enjoys lake-surfing, wakeboarding, cycling, running, hiking and snow skiing. She can’t wait to travel across the country and her home state promoting the Miss Rodeo America organization as well as our great sponsors!

2014 Miss Rodeo Nebraska Honored, privileged, fortunate…the adjectives are never ending when I consider how blessed I am to be representing my remarkable birthplace of Nebraska. The gratitude continues when looking forward to the role I will hold as an ambassador of the magnificent western way of life and finest professional sport in existence, Rodeo. I am Gina Jespersen, the proud daughter of Don and Joni Jespersen. My family would not be complete without the sibling I have shared every moment of life with, my awesome twin brother Taylor Dane and of course my Miniature Australian Shepherd, Remy Jewel. As the 5th generation on my families ranch and farming operation, my western heritage runs deep. I have spent 23 years gaining valuable life lessons in the subjects of hard work, honesty, and integrity. These values, along with a passion for rodeo, and dedication to a life long dream, brought me to the 58th MRN Association Inc. pageant where I was crowned Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2014. This once in a lifetime ride began on June 12th, 2013 in North Platte during the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in conjunction with NEBRASKAland Days where I was honored with the Speech and Written Test Awards, along with winning the categories of Appearance, Personality, and the coveted Horsemanship title. 20 Rodeo Nebraska / Fall 2013
I was born with a love of cattle but from a young age I knew life would not be complete with out an equine companion. I devoted my time to showing horses competitively in 4-H and at the AQHA national level. After graduating from Hemingford High School in 2008 I was awarded a scholarship to attend South Dakota State University where I was a 4-year western member of their NCAA Division I Equestrian team. I was voted Team Captain my senior year, was a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and received my four year SDSU Athletic Letter. From there I transferred to Black Hills State University where I will graduate in December of 2013 with a degree in Elementary Education with a goal of obtaining my Masters. As I travel throughout Nebraska and the greater United States representing the sport of rodeo, I share one of my greatest passions, traveling. Traveling abroad throughout Europe has taught me to embrace all that this world has to offer but always reminding me that my home, in Nebraska, is truly “The Good Life”. My life ambition is to aid in the personal growth and success of young children, striving to instill a sense of self-worth, high morals., and self-confidence. I will start by sharing my life’s motto “Ride with No Regrets” Life is unpredictable, one may never know the trials and triumphs that lay ahead on their journey but if individuals embrace their true passions and live life for all of the glorious wonder it provides each and every day, they will truly Ride with No Regrets! Believe,
Gina Jespersen Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2014 “With God, all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 Ride with No Regrets! www.rodeonebraska.com

Miss Old West Trail PRCA Rodeo Queen 2013 Hi everyone! I am Emily Taylor and on June 22nd, I was crowned the 2013 Miss Old West Trail PRCA Rodeo Queen. Throughout the next year I will proudly represent Crawford and Northwestern Nebraska at a variety of events throughout the great state of Nebraska, and a few neighboring states as well. I am proud to call a small farming community in Northeast Nebraska, Battle Creek, home. Karen and Rick Arkfeld are my parents and I am the middle child out of five. I have two older sisters, Sarah and Kathrynn and two younger siblings, William and Rebecca. Growing up with hard working parents who make a living off the land and being around rodeo installed great values within me. I am lucky to know what hard work is, and that through God nothing is impossible. My home away from home is Lincoln, Nebraska. I attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and am a super-senior, majoring in Agricultural Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations. After I receive my Bachelor’s Degree I wish to pursue my Master’s Degree. When not attending class, I am usually very busy with the University's Equestrian Teams. This will be my fourth year on the Western team, and my third year on the English team. I love being involved with all disciplines of riding as it makes me a well-rounded rider, and person. I also plan to follow my dreams and again try out for the title of Miss Rodeo Nebraska this next year. www.rodeonebraska.com

Thad B. Ita Memorial Bull Riding & Big 10 Rodeo Challenge Joins Nebraska Horse Expo Line-Up LINCOLN, NE — After a busy day attending educational clinics, breed demos and excellent holiday shopping, is there any better way to spend a Saturday evening at the Nebraska Horse Expo than by settling in a seat with family and friends to enjoy Extreme Horseman Trail Challenge and Dancing with Horses Musical Revue? Yes! Stay for the adrenaline-pumping action of the 2nd Annual Thad B. Ita Memorial Bull Riding & Big 10 Rodeo Challenge presented by the UNL Rodeo Association. The Memorial Bull Riding & Big 10 Rodeo Challenge has joined the line-up of thrilling equestrian-related events during the Nebraska Horse Expo that will be held November 15th to 17th at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Husker Football Team will be battling Michigan State at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. Husker and Michigan State fans are invited to cheer on each school’s rodeo athletes during the Big 10 Rodeo Challenge. Michigan State is the only other Big 10 school with a rodeo association. As such, Saturday night, the winner of the Rodeo Challenge will be declared Big 10 Champions! The Memorial Bull Riding will welcome Bull Rider of America (BOA) members to compete for cash and prizes. Double S Bucking Bulls will be providing the stock. All proceeds earned from Memorial Bull Riding and Big 10 Rodeo Challenge will benefit the Thad B. Ita Memorial Scholarship Fund given to UNL students interested in
pursuing a career in agriculture at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) and who shared Thad’s love of the rodeo. A native Nebraskan, Thad was born in Spalding, graduated Wheeler Central High School in Bartlett in 1984, and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was a member of the Rodeo Team and Horse Judging Team. He received a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Economics in 1989 from the CASNR and later served on the CASNR Alumni Group board from 1989 to 2002. While Thad worked for pharmaceutical and seed companies, and most recently as an insurance claims adjuster, his passions were ranching and bull riding. In his younger days, Thad was a regular on the Bull Riders of America circuit and a production crew member on the Extreme Bull Riding Tour since its inception. Thad also enjoyed being a rodeo judge. Tragically, Thad, his wife Tricia, and son Jacob died in a car accident on May 30, 2009. To honor Thad’s memory as a CASNR alum and his passions for ranching and bull riding, the University of Nebraska Foundation established the Thad B. Ita Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions to this fund support scholarships for CASNR students who are involved in either the UNL Rodeo Team or UNL Rodeo Club.
