MGM Deuces Night Dies of Colic DALLAS – Carr Pro Rodeo’s MGM Deuces Night, the 8year-old mare who was honored as the 2012 PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year, died Feb. 23 after suffering an episode of colic at the Elgin (Texas) Veterinary Hospital. It occurred several days after MGM Deuces Night underwent a minor procedure on an injured coffin bone in her right hoof. “Dr. (Marty) Tanner said the procedure went well and that she was doing well, and he was going to send her home Monday (Feb. 25),” owner Pete Carr said. “We’ve lost some great horses over the years, but this one stings quite a bit. “She had been so brilliant so early in her career. She was a foundation mare, and we were going to breed her for a lot of years. ” MGM Deuces Night was born on the Zinser Ranch in Claire, Mich., and then purchased by bareback rider Wes Stevenson, an eight-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. He later sold the horse to Carr, who first took the animal to the NFR in 2010. She returned to ProRodeo’s finale in 2011 and 2012. “I knew she was that good, so part of the reason I sold her to Pete is that I knew she’d have a good shot to go to the Finals,” Stevenson said. “I bought her from Jim Zinser as a broodmare, but she bucked so good, I didn’t want to waste her sitting at my house. I wanted her to have a chance.” In the six times she performed in Las Vegas, she guided cowboys to three go-round titles: Kelly Timberman (88 points in the 10th round, 2010), Ryan Gray (90 points in the fifth round, 2011) and Kaycee Feild (87 points in the 10th round, 2011). Feild, the two-time and reigning bareback riding world champion from Spanish Fork, Utah, says he earned about $100,000 on MGM Deuces Night. Feild rode the horse for

In her short lifetime, the mare led cowboys to a lot of big paydays. In her first trip during a PRCA rodeo, she guided five-time NFR qualifier Chris Harris to an 88-point ride to win the West of the Pecos (Texas) Rodeo in 2010 – the two had a rematch in Pecos in 2011, with Harris winning the title again after an 87. Chase Erickson won the 2011 All American Series Finals title with an 88 on MGM Deuces Night. Source: www.prorodeo.com

Free PRCA Championship Rodeo Day Camp Colorado Springs, CO - Students in Nebraska and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to learn about rodeo for free. The PRCA is hosting free one-day roughstock camp Friday, March 22, 2013 in Lexington, NE. This camp is geared toward those competitors who are just starting out in the sport, and those with some experience who want to learn about fundaments from PRCA champion cowboys. “Some cowboys may not have a parent or older sibling with ProRodeo experience and may not have access to instruction,” said Julie Jutten, industry outreach manger with PRCA. “We want to provide future ProRodeo athletes free opportunities to learn how to use rodeo equipment and to be around livestock.” Camp curriculum includes an introduction to roughstock events with an emphasis on safety, technique, chute procedures, livestock safety, riding equipment, injury prevention, management, fitness, nutrition and business. There are no live buckouts. PRCA is excited to offer a program that gives young athletes an opportunity to learn about rodeo from some of the sport’s top contestants for free. Students ages 8

Cooper Becomes Youngest Rodeo Millionaire SAN ANGELO, Texas – Tuf Cooper is good with numbers. From memory, he can tell you how much he won at the first rodeo on his PRCA permit ($743.37, Hattiesburg, Miss.), how much he won in his first PRCA rodeo as a card holder ($1,023, Huntsville, Texas) and how much he got for his first rodeo win ($5,371.03, Logandale, Nev.). Now he’s got a new milestone to commit to memory. And it's a big one. On Feb. 22, 2013, Cooper became the youngest cowboy to reach $1 million in career earnings, surpassing that milestone at the San Angelo Rodeo just 22 days after his 23rd birthday. It broke the 20-year-old record of 23 years, 9 months set by ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee Ty Murray during the Fourth of July run in 1993. “That is a very cool thing to be in the same category with Ty Murray at least once in my career, considering all that he has accomplished in the sport,” Cooper said. “It’s amazing. It means a lot to me. I can still remember when I was about 9 years old and it was between him and my dad (Hall of Famer Roy Cooper) for who was going to become the first $2 million cowboy (it was Roy).” Cooper surpassed the $1 million milestone by winning the third round of the tie-down roping in San Angelo, worth $2,981, and, ironically, the first check he has ever won at this rodeo. With checks for finishing second to Justin Maass in the Feb. 23 final and third in the average behind Maass (34.2 seconds on four head) and Scott Kormos, Cooper departed San Angelo with his career total at 1,008,168. Cooper actually had his winning run of 7.4 seconds the previous Sunday, allowing for a bit of nearly perfect symmetry. Cooper’s first check – that one in Hattiesburg, back in 2008 – came 16 days after his 18th birthday and this record-producing run came 17 days after his 23rd. “I did the math a couple of years ago,” Cooper said, “and figured out that I had a chance to break Ty’s record in the winter of 2013 if I kept doing the job. I turned out to be pretty much on the money. I guess I stayed the course all right.” Breaking the record in his home state of Texas makes the accomplishment even more special. Cooper, his dad, and brothers, Clint and Clif have been coming to San Angelo for years, both for the PRCA-sanctioned rodeo and the Roping Fiesta. There is a lot of family history in this arena, but none bigger than what Cooper managed here this year. “To become the youngest cowboy millionaire and just do it in one event is pretty impressive,” Murray said. “I did it

in

Two-time and reigning World Champion Tuf Cooper became the sport's youngest-ever millionaire with this 7.4second run in the third round of the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo. Cooper broke the record set by Ty Murray in July 1993 when he was 23 years, 9 months old; Cooper turned 23 on Jan. 31. three events (bull riding, saddle bronc riding and bareback riding), so I had three times the opportunity. Imagine if everywhere Tuf went he had three shots at it in the tiedown roping. “When I was a kid, Roy Cooper was literally one of the guys who changed the game. He was the biggest star at the NFR. Tuf ’s one of the young guys who will further revolutionize the sport, and I’m proud to see young cowboys coming up and breaking records. I wish a money record would never stand for 20 years, but having young stars like Tuf Cooper come along is what helps the sport grow.” In addition to Maass, the other champions at this $462,792 rodeo were bareback rider Kaycee Feild (175 points on two head), steer wrestler Trevor Knowles (16.1 seconds on tour head), team ropers Chace Thompson and Chad Williams (20.3 seconds on four head), saddle bronc rider Jesse Bail (162 points on two head), steer roper Scott Snedecor (34.6 seconds on three head), bull riders Cody Teel and Trevor Kastner (88 points each) and barrel racer Mary Walker (43.63 seconds on three runs). 107th National Western Stock Show Rodeo Comes to Close Susan Kanode For the National Western Stock Show DENVER, Colo. — Seven event titles were awarded at this year’s National Western Stock Show Rodeo and three of them have strong ties to Calcasieu Parish in Louisiana. Casey Martin and Shane Hanchey who both call Sulphur, La., home came into the final performance with a good lead and were able maintain their positions, Martin in steer wrestling and Hanchey in tiedown roping. Bull rider Corey Navarre, came into the finals in fourth place and moved up to win the title here. Navarre, lives in Weatherford, Okla., but grew up in Sulphur and will always call that home as well. Martin was the big money winner of the whole rodeo earning $15,097 for a total time of 11.6 seconds on three steers. While he was competing, Hanchey was sitting on the back of the bucking chutes cheering for his close friend. Then it was Martin’s turn to watch Hanchey rope a calf in 8.9-seconds giving him the win with a total time of 24.5 seconds. Hanchey’s earnings in the Denver Coliseum were $11,299. “We do feed off of each other,” Hanchey said. “I’m his biggest fan. I see how hard he works and we are always pulling for each other.” Navarre was one of six men to ride all three of his bulls. He placed deep in round one and was part of a three-way tie for second in the finals. His total of 247 points was just two points ahead of Trevor Kastner, from Ardmore, Okla. Navarre, who is a four-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier could be on his way to his fifth if he continues to ride like he did here. Former National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion bareback rider Ty Breuer showed fans he is ready for the next step in his career. Breuer, who won that title in 2009, had to take some time off because he broke the same leg twice but is healthy now and planning to hit the circuit full-time. He had 246 points to win $12,336. Cody Wright’s rodeo resume just got longer with his first win here. The two-time world champion earned his title with 250 points and collected $8,542. Jane Melby, originally from Backus, Minn., now living in Burneyville, Okla., dominated the barrel racing on her new horse, First Down Perks. They had a total time of 45.96 seconds winning $10,299. In the team roping it was a happy birthday for Nick Sartain from Dover, Okla. He celebrated with his new partner eight-time world champion heeler Rich Skelton from Llano, Texas by adding to their buckle collection. Skelton previously won this rodeo roping with Speed Williams who he also won his world championships with. Sartain has a heading world title of his own, but this is his first Denver championship. They had a total time of 14.5 seconds on three steers to win $8,796. Total attendance at the 107th edition of the National Western Stock Show was 628,366. Rodeo All-Star Announces Co-Presenting Partners for the First-Ever Rodeo All-Star Weekend, April 4-6, 2013 Denver, Colo. – For the first time in history, rodeo champions from across various associations will compete to determine one true champion at Rodeo All-Star Weekend, hosted in Denver at the National Western Complex and Events Center. Rodeo All-Star management proudly announces two presenting partners of this inaugural event; Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply and Cinch Jeans & Shirts. “Rodeo is a western tradition that has a way of challenging us all to be our best. When you put All-Star competitors with the best bucking stock, and invite the sport’s most loyal fans to watch, that’s a recipe that ought to inspire us all. Ultimately, that’s why Murdoch’s thought it was important to make this great idea happen. Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply is proud to present such a phenomenal experience, and bring a whole new level of competition to the rodeo arena,” said Kitch Walker, Director of Marketing, Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply. Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply was founded in Bozeman, Montana in 1994. Since then, Murdoch’s has opened 23 stores throughout Montana, Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. Murdoch’s is known for its walls of jeans, gloves, socks, work wear, boots and shoes for the entire family as well as its vast line of ranch, home, large animal and pet supplies. Miller International, parent company of Cinch Jeans & Shirts, has been a longtime partner of the National Western Stock Show. “Miller International is very proud of the long lasting relationship we have had with the National Western Stock Show. Cinch Jeans is excited to be a part of National

Western’s new venture of Rodeo All-Star Weekend. It brings the best of the best to our backyard and we are honored to be able to be a part of such an exciting event.” said David Dean, CEO, Miller International. In 1996, Cinch® was created as a premium western brand that complemented an active lifestyle, with great fit, quality and styling. Today, the Cinch® brand continues to be known as the leader in premium clothing inspired by the attitude and values of the western lifestyle man. Cinch® is a part of the Miller International, Inc. family of brands with corporate headquarters located in Denver, Colorado. “We are honored to have two deeply rooted and successful western brands co-present and launch the first-ever Rodeo All-Star Weekend”, said Paul Andrews, President and CEO of the National Western. Denver has hosted the likes of NBA, NHL and MLB AllStar games. Now the Mile High City will add Rodeo AllStar Weekend to Denver’s premier events list. The world’s top ranked cowboys and cowgirls will ride into Denver to compete in three rodeo performances with a chance to win $140,000 in prize money and be crowned Rodeo All-Stars. The National Western Complex will be adorned with interactive games and rodeo fanfare, and will host special events including a Breakfast with Champions, All-Star Fashion Show presented by Murdoch’s, Mutton Bustin’ competitions, and exclusive after parties. Tickets to the inaugural Rodeo All-Star Weekend are on sale now at rodeoallstar.com, all Murdoch’s locations, the National Western Box Office, King Soopers locations, or by phone at 1-866-464-2626.
