ALEXANDER S E C C O M B E

530 West 25th Street, New York, NY

Alexander Seccombe is a British artist living and working in Savannah Georgia. The artist creates abstract expressionist pieces using fine acrylic paints, gauche, water, and other materials, applied with various techniques onto stretched cotton canvases. He describes his method as attacking the canvas, as he energetically administers gestural brushstrokes amidst organic, raw, and textured details. His works are defined by their bold color schemes and dynamic energy. The self-taught artist holds a BA in Art History from Oxford Brooks university. Having been exposed to different cultures, countries, and environments from a young age has greatly contributed and informed his artistic practice. He draws inspiration from his travels, which have taken him everywhere from off-the-grid exotic islands, to major urban cities packed with art and historical treasures.

To create my pieces, I apply acrylic paint to cotton-stretched canvases and pieces of lumber. I prefer Golden Artist Colors© for their superior pigmentation, as well as liquitex, and recently, gouache for its rich pigment ratios. I usually use an impasto knife or spatula, my hands, or pieces of stiff cardboard. I feel the need to attack the canvas, much like a musician attacks their instrument. The resulting energy is, when successful, what leads to a finished piece. My favorite pieces are always the ones that I initially dislike upon completing! Often sitting with a piece for a long time allows me to come to terms with it, and grow to appreciate it.
