MANINHO RIBEIRO
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
Maninho Ribeiro, a self-taught artist born in Angola and based in France, is deeply inspired by his African roots. With a life shaped by diverse cultures, including time spent in Holland, Switzerland, and France, Ribeiro’s art reflects a unique blend of experiences.
He speaks six languages and uses his multicultural background to tell compelling stories through his work.
Ribeiro celebrates Africa’s natural resources—gold, diamonds, and oil—through his paintings while addressing economic disparities and social challenges. He combines abstract elements with recognizable figures in his distinct style, encouraging viewers to explore themes of identity and resilience.
Working with oils on canvas and natural pigments, Ribeiro utilizes cuttingedge techniques to create vibrant, textured pieces. His art is not just a visual experience but also a medium of advocacy, striving to inspire pride in African heritage and empower other African artists.
Currently working from his studio in France, Ribeiro views his art as an evolving journey. His mission is to honor Africa’s beauty and complexity, leaving a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
I was born to draw and when I was 18 years old, I had to ask myself why I didn’t live to paint. When I came across the paintings of Felicien Rops, I realized that I had a passion for painting and was drawn to the art’s religious elements. I was drawn to the beautiful, diabolical sex, religion, and fantastical eroticism of these works. I make peace with the world of the arts.
