ARNAUD
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
French artist Arnaud Oosthoek paints compelling abstractions that breach the surface of conscious awareness. Favoring acrylic and oil as mediums, he builds arcane patterns and structures that range from rigorous geometries to loosely shaped improvisations. At times the paint flutters across the canvas in vigorous gestural motions, other times it undulates gently like a pool of water or descends languidly on the surface as if slowly melting. Either way, Oosthoek’s oeuvre is an intuitive act solely guided by his emotions. His work is an invitation to selfexamination, a search for meaning we undertake, as we seek our way through the dense fabric of his astral mazes.
ARNAUD OOSTHOEK ONThe act of creating is instinctive for me. It starts from a general idea in my mind and is then guided entirely by my emotions. Although I am well-versed in many techniques, including charcoal, India ink, and graphite, I prefer to use acrylics and oils. While remaining within the realm of abstraction, I take two different approaches. One is based on movement, where perspective is subverted. The other one focuses on clear shapes of linear and geometric order, while integrating colors that will present an image of mystery yet to be discovered.
