CHATCHAI NOTANANDA
Chatchai Notananda creates his artworks primarily with acrylic, airbrush, and spray paint on linen or canvas. Notananda was born in Thailand and lives there today—as such, his art mainly comments on Thai contemporary culture. In addition to this, Notananda soaks up the natural, rural scenery of Thailand, and renders it into his abstract artwork. Notananda makes sure not to take everything he sees at face value, often noticing that there may be other meanings and stories hiding beneath the surface. Notananda then aims to reduce the forms he retains in his inner thoughts into the visual language of abstraction. What we see on the canvas is the landscape of Notananda’s mind, his chosen dialect of communication with his viewer. Notananda received a Master of Visual Arts at Chiang Mai University, and is now a PhD candidate in addition to his career as an artist. In his spare time, Notananda DJs and enjoys experimental music.
CHATCHAI NOTANANDA ONI purpose to express my thoughts on the natural scenery of rural Thailand through abstract landscapes and object paintings. Via a process of observation and recollection, I uncover the intense stories behind each image, while accepting the chaotic and unsightly reality that I experience. As a result, my works act as mementos resulting from the aggregation of impression and realization. To convey a sense of abstraction without providing any literal information, I depict the landscapes that vividly exist in his mind, through simplified forms. I intentionally use swerving lines and colors that have psychological attributes, to arouse emotions and communicate with my audience.
