James Dixon presents a stunning universe of shapes in his prolific sculpting oeuvre. Within that decades-long body of work are galaxies of plump annular pieces; leafy fans; spindly, crenelated columns; welcoming round or conical vessels; and elaborate structures. The stars and planets in each galaxy, the individual works, celebrate the forms within forms of these conventional or abstract shapes – all of which make for a singular geography of sorts. Big to fine, these geographies include separate millimeter-wide rivulets, expressive antennae, and curious drop-shapes throughout.
Yet, with his constant inspiration, he explores single galaxies at a time, presenting other-worldly interpretations within each theme. His current explorations are cast and hand-wrought bronze work families: Chalice, Indigenous, Columns, Tondo and Vessels. Two of his primary inspirations are the theme of social archetypes and the human hunger for an emotional experience that embodies and communicates truth. Sublime yet punctuated with levity, as he says himself. The earthy, rough-hewn contour of his Indigenous-titled category also displays his own interest in Pre-Industrial Global Art.Dixon cites his other formative influences as being his parents, historical social movements, audio artists and, notably, the divine.
JAMES DIXON ONI have garnered an inclusive range of artistic sensibilities over time. Included are spontaneity of action, abundant implementation of intuition, and a sustained belief that risk-taking will prevail in the end. Of course, this is an abridged sample of cues that I incorporate into my artistic process. I am certain that additional object-making options exist for me, which I failed to mention. With regard to my technique or method of operations, my overarching narrative consists of applying my artistic sensibilities to whatever brick-and-mortar medium or cerebral challenge is set before me. I was once told by an art critic that I “get it (the sculpture) nearly correct, one hundred percent of the time.” For some reason that I cannot single out, I find relative inner peace in his poignant observation.
