JULIAN MCKENNEY
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
Maine-based photographer Julian McKenney captures unassuming slivers of beauty. The primary inspiration for his photographs comes while walking or hiking in nature or exploring local surroundings. Armed with a Canon T6i camera, he feels compelled to register tiny fragments of nature that may otherwise be overlooked: a crab shell, a flower, a cluster of wild berries, an orange leaf on a bed of pine needles. “I capture the one percent that you see,” McKenney says. “When the spirit moves me, I venture out and photograph what I believe will bring value to the eye.” McKenney’s pictures are a breath of fresh air. Despite focusing on the small details, they emanate an aura of expansive silence that quiets the mind of the viewer, albeit for a short moment.
McKenney has a degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He lives and works in Biddeford, Maine.
JULIAN MCKENNEY ONWhether it be a vision of a situation or a walk in the woods, I always capture what I’m looking for in my head before my camera does. The process of bringing a slice of imagination to the real world through photography has always brought me great relaxation and passion. My focus is intuitively drawn to the beauty of nature, especially that which is typically overlooked or forgotten. When the spirit moves me, or when I see something that belongs in a frame, I take it upon myself to venture out and capture what I believe will bring value to the eye.
