MARIA REGINA GARCIGA
In order to create her artworks, Maria Regina Garciga focuses on a minuscule segment of a photograph, which is usually an inch or a quarter of an inch long. Garciga pores over this segment in order to magnify it and, in doing so, reveal the allure of detail and the pockets of life that we overlook. Garciga chooses her subject matter based on what catches her eye and allows her process to guide her forward. Garciga’s mastery of the technical aspects of painting captures our imagination and allows us to ruminate upon every line and area of color she creates. In fact, her color choices stem from her desire to keep the colors as pure as possible and respect them for what they are. Therefore, she seldom mixes colors on her canvas.
Garciga was born in Peru and now lives in Houston, Texas. In addition to her career as a painter, Garciga is a teacher, and she holds a PhD in History, Literature, and Philosophy. Her art has received recognition at various art shows and galleries and has recently been exhibited in Red Dot Miami 2023; Soliloquio, Arte Borgo Gallery, Salerno, Italy; Firenze Contemporary II, Rossocinabro Gallery, Florence, Italy; Contemporary Venice 2022 – 11th Edition ITSLIQUID International Art Fair Venice, Palazzo Bembo, Venice, Italy. Garciga is also well-traveled, and her travels provide her insight into the importance of color in various world cultures. She aims for her artwork to foster an appreciation for the little things in life, to allow the viewer to see the details of their own life in a different light.
MARIA REGINA GARCIGA ON
I paint the small wonders of the everyday. The ordinary things that go unnoticed; an apple, a flower, a rock, a piece of rope. I focus on a tiny section of a photograph, usually an inch or a quarter of an inch, and magnify it. There is something wonderful about looking at a tiny piece of paper and revealing the hidden magic that lies within an object or element of nature; the organic forms, the movement, the colors. By turning the minuscule into majestic, I celebrate the infinite beauty of our environment.
