MARILUZ LOSADA
Multimedia artist Mariluz Losada’s paintings are vibrant expressions of captivating visual intrigue. Gazing out at the viewer, eyes are a common motif used in Losada’s work. Glasses strewn about mark her work as well commenting on interpretation, visuality and perception. The eyes and glasses are indicative of Losada’s family’s optical practices. Deeply invested in the workings of the eye and what it represents, Losada uses ophthalmic themes both as someone who studies vision and as an artist relying on sight: its reflection of light, color, and dimension. These eyes, faces and figures split and merge recalling the multidimensionality of cubist artists such as Picasso and others with characteristic ambit. Losada likens her work to comic book art from the 60s and 70s and suggests her pieces be read as such: episodic and transgressing the constraints of definitions of art. Her pieces often feature the characteristic eyes and spectacles floating whimsically amongst wavy blobs of color, slices of cake and cactuses. Rendered in stark primaries, her acrylic on canvas constructions call the viewer’s eye into action, encouraging an energetic and ecstatic encounter.
Losada lives and works in the small coastal town of Algarrobo, Chile, where she enjoys paddle boarding and spending time near the sea.
MARILUZ LOSADA ONMy work is the summation of my personal experiences and unbridled joie de vivre, expressed through a multitude of techniques and materials. I paint, sculpt, photograph, and work digitally, yet the boundaries that separate one medium from another overlap and blend, weaving stories and characters in a tapestry of bold colors. I paint my sculptures, write on my canvases, photograph drawings and collage them digitally, then copy them back on a flat surface. My work is populated by comic-like figures, anatomical parts like mouths, eyes, and hands, or objects such as flowerpots, cakes, and glasses - a legacy of my family’s practice as opticians. By creating vibrant and uplifting dances of colors and form, I try to inspire people to have a more playful and lighthearted attitude toward life and rediscover its magic.
