Irises and crystalline shapes meld and collide in Marleen Vinkenvleugel’s alcohol ink paintings. Blooms and splashes cover her canvases with rich colors and vibrant displays. Her experimental process — in which she allows the alcohol inks to penetrate in an organic way which she calls intuitive art — results in electrified chemical clouds and striking abstract imagery. Her blues, pinks and golds sputter and engulf, presenting an array of dioramas evoking their titles with works such as Take Me to a Field of Flowers, The Wanderer and When the Flow of Nature Catches You. Billowing plumes carouse characterizing Vinkenvleugel’s works. Shot through with metallic veins, her creations spark the imagination taking the viewer on an adventure through otherworldly dreamscapes. Heartbeat soars like a phoenix birthed of flames, while Be Gentle hugs and nurtures with a calm regenerative air. Flower is a churning melody conveying ephemeral sweetness. Through her work, Vinkenvleugel hopes to bring light and joy to spaces her work inhabits. Flooding and shining an array of colorful inks, the work offers a hopeful liveliness extended to the viewer in flourishing gestures.
Vinkenvleugel lives in Aalten, a small town in the Netherlands where she also works as a speech and art therapist.
MARLEEN VINKENVLEUGEL ON
I’m a self-taught artist who expresses her inner-voice with alcohol inks. I follow the brush intuitively through abstract forms of bright colors and shiny gold and copper. Appealing to the viewer’s imagination, I take them on an adventure, a journey through my stories and personal reflections. I believe in the power of art to form and nurture meaningful connections with others and a deeper bond with ourselves. As I find my voice through color and movement, I learn how to appreciate another person’s worldview, tastes, thoughts, or work. Let us harness the power of creativity to dispel the darkness in this world and bring more joy to our homes.
