MIRNA BALDISSERA
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
From the tempestuous imagination of Mirna Baldissera, spring Gothic landscapes dripping with Romantic pathos. After decades working in fashion, Baldissera shifted her creative focus to collages, which she assembles out of magazine illustrations and photographs she takes herself. Her work betrays her deep fascination with the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Greece, the cosmos, and esoterica, with imagery such as columns, staircases, abandoned gardens, and portals of light. The overdramatized feel of her oeuvre is also a direct allusion to her surroundings. After living in Milan for most of her life, she returned to her hometown, a city nestled in the Dolomite Alps. Feeling somewhat maladjusted to this new setting, which, to her own admission is “overbearing,” Mirna infuses a sense of mysterious foreboding into her work. As such we see ominous castles perched over the sea at vertiginous heights, skyscrapers jutting out into space, dungeons from which humans are absent. Animals are often present, however, especially felines – such as tigers, lions, and cats –and birds of prey. Wild and undomesticated, they stand as symbols of freedom and depositaries of arcane knowledge. Like a high priestess to her initiates, Baldissera guides us into her realms of magic, towards sacred truths only halfrevealed.
Baldissera studied fashion at Istituto Marangoni in Milan and worked as a fashion and textile designer for many years. She exhibited individually and collectively in Florence and had a solo exhibition at Miramonti Majestic Grand Hotel di Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2013. Baldissera lives and works in Belluno, Italy.
MIRNA BALDISSERA ONThe choice to create handmade collages came after many years of school and work dedicated to drawing, bringing an authentic revolution in the way I express myself. Driven solely by my insight, I use scissors to cut everything out and glue to reassemble it all, combining the fragility of paper with subtle material pleasure and stimulating mental focus.
Sometimes, due to my innate predisposition to movement, the compositions are aerial and dynamic, as if moved by the wind. Other times, they look serene, almost silent, when my imagination is quieted in a rediscovered balance.
Landscapes, people, suggestions are suspended between an abstractionism bordering on surrealism, an intense presence of nature, historical fascinations, and futuristic illusions. My creative impulse is animated by my passion for color and my visionary gaze, which analyzes, interprets, composes, decomposes, and transforms. I create and recreate new realities: a continuous journey in search of beauty, harmony, and emotions that I would like to share with the viewer.
