Artist Renuka Sonhi Gulati is an Indian artist who is highly regarded for her oil on canvas paintings and sculpture work. She is particularly interested in gender discourse. Specifically, the interplay of various structures in society that work to suppress the voice and status of women. Of her work, she states she has “found herself wanting to express what it feels like to be a woman in a competitive world.” The life-like quality of the subjects she depicts is one of the most striking qualities of Gulati’s paintings. She artfully captures the distinct personalities of her subjects, allowing them to shine as strong protagonists in her dreamy canvases. Her paintings encompass the softness of transparency effects as well as detailed opaque effects, which lends a creative and realistic look to the art work. She has been keenly examining the links between man’s exploitative treatment of nature and the resulting effect of this onslaught. The series featuring a log of wood takes on the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark to reflect on the world as it stands today, especially in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I primarily work with natural elements, including human forms. Nature has always inspired me to experiment with various textures and colors, and my urge to display feminine power resulted in the woman form as a protagonist in most of my art work. Basically my art links with environment as also feminism and can be called ecofeminist. My initial compositions in oil and acrylic painting eventually transitioned within sculptures in fiberglass as well as in bronze. Overtime, my color palette matured into various hues, while I use shades of white and silver as base colors. So, I am into painting, sculpture as well as digital art. My work uses soft transparency effects and detailed opaque effects, which both lend creative and realistic components to my canvases.
