CALLIGRAPHY
Amine M., M.D., the man behind Saja Calligraphy is ambitiously driving the re-presentation of illuminated hand-lettering design back into the modern art world. He also has an expansive body of graphical paintings, digital art, and an enormous body of photographs taken from his global treks practicing medicine. Detailed patterning from Byzantine illuminations before the printing press delineated between illustrations and text. Saja Calligraphy, however, masterfully innovates by integrating graphic-heavy 21st-century art with the classical flourishes and curvilinear delight of Arabic script. Saja Calligraphy ink, acrylic, and oil productions headlined the Tunisian installation at the Dubai Expo 2020, featuring almost two dozen works.
His other accolades and expositions include being featured in numerous premier national galleries in Tunisia; 2021 displays in the Tunisian National Library, and the Dubai All Africa Festival of 2021. Amine M. has also worked extensively in a philanthropic context for the Afreecan Association, a writer’s, literacy and education collective NGO. He took part in their 2018 Charity Exhibition.
He has traveled globally as a humanitarian doctor treating young children. In this, he gained a broad experiential knowledge of diverse peoples and cultures; their wants, needs, tragedies, and joys. This gives him a painter’s palette with a curative, healing potential for art that few people have.
SAJA CALLIGRAPHY ONMy artistic approach was the result of fortuity paired with a gift buried in me since my earliest childhood. I draw inspiration from my humanitarian travels around the world. By observing the human and cultural differences that constitute our wealth, I document the beauty that lies in the small details. Using an aesthetic that blends calligraphy with portraiture, I create pictorial associations that are as rare as they are sublime, with a unique character. My wish is to make my art international; to take it out of its usual framework and democratize it so that it is accessible to everyone. I strongly believe in artistic openness, and I believe that art, whatever its form, allows the world to be better.
