GONZALEZ VILA
Yaiza Gonzalez’ portraits are a testament to resilience and the transformative power of pain. Gonzalez grew up in Lanzarote, in the Spanish Canary Islands, in a conflictual family setting. Left to her own devices, she had to learn quickly how to take care of herself. Although self-referential, the figures in her paintings are archetypes of all women, representing their vulnerability and strength. Gonzalez believes we are the sum of different states of mind, experiences, and personalities; some belonging to us, some involuntarily absorbed from others whom we have come across. We bear the imprint of the world and the scars of the past within and without. This myriad of emotions and conflicting identities is expressed in a richly textured surface achieved through layers of acrylic paint, which Gonzalez aptly manipulates with brushes, sponges, palette knives, and her bare fingers. The women, realistically depicted, emerge from a murky background. They look us straight in the eyes with conviction. They struggled, they suffered, but they have survived.
YAIZA GONZALEZ VILA ONMy work reflects my emotions, from the most beautiful to the darkest. I grew up in a conflictual environment and had to quickly learn to take care of myself and find strength in difficult situations. The female figures in my paintings are drawn from my own experiences, while acting as archetypes of all women. I see each individual as a culmination of all the feelings, thoughts, and situations they have voluntarily or involuntarily acquired throughout their lives, whether good or bad. In my portraits I convey the contradictions of women’s complex emotional fabric, while letting resilience and courage shine through sadness and pain. Recently I have started to paint male portraits, moving towards a more existential exploration of the subjects. For inquiries, sales@agora-gallery.com
