RETHINK WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Degree thesis. The project create a new area for services for workers of the Roveri industrial area in Bologna, services that were chosen from the observation of other corporate welfare examples. The plan, starting from the north, consist in a canteen, a daycare for worker’s children, a gym , a swimming pool a small hotel and an education center. As in many university campus, where the public space crate a sense of identity, here all the building are unified by the common lawn that connect them visually and create a gathering space for the workers. The education center is at the same time the main monumental entrance and the head of the central common lawn. Because of this double purpose, the building was developed to be perceived as two black monolith from the outside and as walkable podium from the inner part of the area, creating a continuous three dimensional public space that start from the green common and finishes on top of the roof. Inside the two parts of the education center, the staircases connect in a single visual progression, that goes from the entrance to the roof, all the glazed corridors surrounded by the classrooms.

COMMON

URBAN PL ANN IN G The project interested an ex-industrial part of Ferrara (Italy), abandoned during the 70’s that became quickly one of the most degraded part of the city. The very first part of the project consisted in a s.w.o.t analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats), that has highlighted the proximity of the area to the historic center and to museum of Jewish culture, a good mixture of function in this district, and the possibility to use the Darsena channel in front of the area to create a new boarding for river tourism. After this first part of analysis I decided to put a residential area, a cultural center, a sport center and a hotel provided with house boats on the channel . The entire area was differentiated in three parts, reflecting the three different kind of users that were supposed to be there. Then I designed a central path that crossed all the area (east-west), linked to another important existing path that runs under the historic wall of Ferrara, creating three big green bands that go from the wall to the Darsena channel. Finally, for the cultural center, I decided to reuse some industry that were in the area as a theatre and public spaces for associations.

The main aim of the project was to build a community center for Burkeville (Vancouver) inhabitants. The key aspects were to capture the attention of the people on the other part of the existing path, creating clear points of view of the architecture from the village through the trail and at the same time to reduce the footprint. The site reveals a double nature: the quietness of the grove and the creek on the north-west side and the traffic noise and the need to be seen from of Russ Baker way on the east side. The building itself embrace this double characteristic, this aspect has been developed working in section, creating one architecture that include two different buildings. Low ceiling, delicate light that comes from the uppers surfaces of the prisms and skylights over the stairwell, humansize window to observe nature in silence and, on the other side, the bigger space with high ceiling of the main hall and light that enter exuberantly from the window walls, through the perforated copper screen, creating dazzling light’s glares that animate the space. The major outside public space is bounded by the main hall and the cafe, the mutual interrelationship between it and the two indoor spaces is enhanced by the large glass surfaces that allow visual interconnection, so the activities that take place inside animate the garden and vice versa.

REPLACING URBAN FABRIC The main aim of this project was to retrain an area in Forli (Italy) that was previously an abandoned cinema, secondly to provide new amenities in this part of the city centre, where there were no more places of interest. After analyzing the area and chose which environmental elements were useful I started to design a new residential and commercial building in place of the old cinema. The project provides shops and offices on the ground floor and small flats on first and second floors. The design of the central square was to connect the two roads that flank the site, a place activated by the cafe throughout the day. The long corten steel cantilever of the bar was thought to visually attracting peoples who pass through this part of the city. During the project developing also the facades were designed to make them suitable in appearance and technology to the environment and Italian traditions, revisited in a contemporary way.

RENOVATING SACRED CULTURE The aim of the project was to renovate the church of Saints Rita e Tecla in Ferrara, built between 1639 and 1659 by the Augustinian’s order. The restoration consist in the first phase in a metric survey and the study of all the deteriorated parts, understanding the causes of those damages on the external and interior surfaces of the building. At the same time, also the statics of the church has been studied, analysing the main fissures and supposing the kinematic reasons of those cracks, in relation also to the recent earthquake of 2012. After all these analysis, a series of conservation interventions have been studied to block the deterioration of the surfaces, eliminating the main problems related to the deterioration of the architectonic imagine of the building and, at the same time, to ensure the static safety of the church. Finally, due to the liturgical adaptation guidelines, a new design for the celebratory spaces has been done, creating a closer relationship between the priest and Christians.

ACCESSIBLE

M O B I L I T Y

The project is located inside the Blind People’s Association in Ahmedabad India, a professional organization which believes in providing equal opportunities to all categories of people with disabilities. Consistent with the philosophy, it works for providing education, employment opportunities, equal rights and quality life for them. The aim of the project was to solve the problems connected with the lack of information, the obstructed and not dedicated pathways and in general the usability of the common spaces. For the project solutions a five senses design was adopted, first step was to separate car accesses and parking lot from the pedestrian area, to reduce the risks especially for blind peoples and those with motor disabilities. Secondly a new tactile path was designed to connect all the buildings of the association, various auditory street furniture were added, like the central fountain, to indicate the location of the places for visually impaired people and people with mental disabilities.

CAMPUS RECONNECTION The campus of the Autonomous National University of the Mexico (UNAM), was raised at the end of the 1940s in a place that was country, but after the Mexico City past development is now totally absorbed inside the outskirt of the city. In the past the university authority decided to create a wall to separate the campus from the neighbourhood to prevent abusive construction inside the university area, today that wall doesn’t allow the interconnection between Copilco suburb and the campus, closing part of the possible relationship between the large green public spaces inside UNAM and the overcrowded neighbourhood. First part of the plan is to demolish the wall in some sections, secondly to create a linear park from the traffic dividers that run along the road circuit outside the campus. That linear park have a double function: on one side it create new green areas for students and citizens in general, on the other side it provide a safe connection for pedestrian that come from outside the campus, to the public spaces of the university.

TEMPORARY

P A V I L I O N

Some things are made to last forever, always the same while some others are made to be temporary, removable and adaptable to the context. From the beginning of the design process I’ve always related my pavilion to the second kind of architecture. The best spot to place it was at the north-west point of Burkeville park (Vancouver), to make it as visible as possible, trying to reactivate this public space. Another aim of the design process was to minimize the footprint and the costs of construction of it, because of that, the structural problem was solved using trees as main structure providing ropes to connect them . Instead of hanging the sails directly to the trees logs with collars, I decided to interject poles jointed with hinge to the ground so they will take a part of the tension of the sails and will discharge it to the ground. The final solution of the blades, made by PVC fabric, helps to create a quiet space, isolating part of the noise coming from the airplanes (Burkeville is close to the international airport) and provides a roof.

WOOD CONSTRUCTION The main aim of this project was to develop a cultural center near Bolzano (Italy) completely build with wooden technology such as CLT , using reused and sustainable materials for the entire building .The intention was to build a green building and at the same time, reduce the construction expenses. The design is based on a shift between the ground level and the first floor, the first one create with the curves of his porch and the low ceiling a cozy and attractive space, on top of that the pure geometric shape of the auditorium allows only a restricted relationship with the context. The materials involved reflect this design choice: the warmth and variability of the wooden surfaces for the ground level , the hardness and immutable aspect of the corten steel.

REDEVELOP

CITY OUTSKIRTS The project, offers a solution to the decay of an area near Arno river in the district of Piagge in Florence (Italy) . The main aim was to attract people inside the area and locate new functions that are, as in this case, absent in Italians suburbs. Since the very first impressions I thought that it would have been useless to design solutions only for the area involved, so I decided to made a project that can be applied to all the strip that goes, along the Arno river, straight to the center of Florence. The final solution involves the use of “plates” to define clearly borders between the natural environment and built spaces and a the same time, make the area recognizable. The design of the buildings reflect the functions requested such as social housing, commercial spaces, dormitory and a gym. The dormitorystudent house was designed as if it’s composed by three different parts: the first floor is really permeable, common spaces like gymnasium and the library are placed there , the upper floors are more closed to the outside except for the glazed courts. The third element is the wooden brise soleil, conceived as a fabric sheet, creating a continuous surface seen from the distance that embraces the whole building, and ad the same time donating, at a closer look, a continuously changing appearance due to the nature of the material.
