letter from the Editor In this issue the AGB team decided to heat up the pages for the cold winter season ahead. The fashion editorials are sexy, sensual and fun. We brought men to the forefront this time, with seven male models that we thought exuded just the right amount of raw masculinity. I must confess, the shoot was fun and a little steamy ... we might have to have this as a recurring theme at AGB! Let us know what you think about the spread, write to us and share your thoughts. A main focus this month is being sexually and sensually healthy. Sometimes having healthy partner or social relationships can be challenging. Stress at work, family issues and low self esteem can cause inner turmoil and confusion, and maintaining a balanced emotional state can take hard work and patience. Check out the Superfoodie pages for tips on achieving hormonal balance and nourishing the nervous system, which will help you feel more at ease emotionally. Lets face it: being in love, infatuated or crushing on someone can be wonderful but sometimes unnerving. Being healthy can offset the difficult times, and prepare you emotionally for whatever the universe has in mind for you. Building self-confidence is also a very important process, one which will not only attract others to you, but help you make better decisions when it comes to choosing a mate. There are many ways to find that confidence. For some it’s visiting the gym or taking yoga or dance classes to enhance your physical appeal. For others, it’s attaining wisdom, whether through soul searching, or through learning outside ourselves through classes, books, even simple, everyday experiences. Confidence also comes from talent -- a talented artist, poet, actor or writer can transport us into numerous fantasies and surreal destinations, or open us up to complex realities. Perhaps it’s as uncomplicated as visiting your favorite boutique or make-up counter. These are all healthy ways to enhance the sexy in you. We hope to bring you as much information as possible on all these paths, in this issue and in the many issues to follow. With Gratitude, Mara Schiavetti

hile I was in Los Angeles in January I spent the day with the creator of the all natural skincare, hair oil, and fragrance line, Roots Rose Radish. Founder and creator, Christian Toscano wears a lot of hats: from herbalist to doula (soon to be a midwife!). She really knows her stuff when it comes to plants. We started with a hike in Griffith Park, where she pulled out her shears and wild crafted ingredients that she uses in her product line and around her home. I should have brought a notebook because my brain couldn’t keep up with all the ‘oh my gosh, I had no idea!’ information she shared with me about nearly every plant, tree, grass, and flower we passed. We got lost in the trails and had to slide on our bums down some really steep hills until we found our way back
down. During our adventure, she introduced me to Castor oil plants and much much more.
I
met Christian earlier last year when she came to NYC to introduce her handmadein-small-batches line of products to magazine editors. The first thing she said to me when I picked up her honey pecan rose face cleanser was: here’s a spoon -” you have to taste it.” I loved that we share the belief that what we put on our bodies has to be safe enough for us to eat. Our skin is our largest organ, and as Christian says: “it does the most ingestion and elimination for the body, and plays an important part in the immune

Although Sephora’s in-house brand is not a natural ingredient line, this month we learned about their impressive efforts to be socially conscious. We decided to use some of the Sephora collection make-up for our current beauty shoot after hearing about the brand’s ethical standards, and it’s adherence to the California Transparency in Supply Chain Act of 2010. The Act compels companies that meet certain requirements to disclose their efforts to eradicate slavery and human trafficking from their supply chains. The store as a whole also gives each branch the opportunity to choose a local non-profit to raise funds for. http://www.sephora.com

With the belief that open source material plays a strong role in the development of the sustainable design community, St James started Study Hall in the summer of 2010. Under her guidance, Study interns developed, produced and sold their own sustainable mini collections. Study Hall can now be found at several retailers in New York City and abroad. St James lends her talent and skills to various organizations, including The Uniform Project (a fundraising platform using sustainable design to raise money for underprivileged children) and the Awamaki Lab (a program that fosters cross-cultural partnerships between young designers and Peru’s Awamaki indigenous weaver collective), where she facilitates discussions about the intersection of sustainability, ethical sourcing, and product innovation. and healing available with Chinese herbs. This vision led to the forming of Imperial Tonics in 2011, first as retail distributor of tonic herbs and finally as a producer and manufacturer of our own Ancient Wisdom blend. Ancient Wisdom was designed to be an all-encompassing formula of the elite substances of Chinese herbalism in an efficient form -- able to be widely distributed, highly effective and affordable.
harnessing health with superior chinese herbs Q&A with Marcus Schneider the founder and creator of Ancient Wisdom, a healing tonic made from Superior Chinese herbs.
Q;
Hi Marcus can you please lets us in on your world of Chinese Herbalism, and how you got started with it?
A;
I discovered Chinese tonic herbs after having had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome when I was younger and being sick and tired for years. A friend introduced me to Chinese tonic herbs and I began to take them. The first herb that really had a profound impact on me was He Shou Wu, which is one of the premier Yin Jing tonics of Chinese Herbalism. The legend of the plant is that an old farmer who was unable to bear children was advised to take the plant from a Daoist monk. After consistent use, the man was said to have regained his health, fathered many children and to have had jet black hair when he was 120 years old. I have seen similar results from all the ingredients in Ancient Wisdom - Astragalus for strengthening, Reishi for immune-support, Schizandra for a build-up of energy and Goji for clear skin and restoration. In the back of my mind while using tonic herbs, I always had the desire to share their wealth and wisdom with the world, and bring awareness to the greater levels of health
Q;
Is there an opportune time of the day to take the tonic herbs? How many times can you take it?,
A;
Generally, with tonic herbs, what is most important is maintenance, being sure to take the herbs a few times daily, day in and day out. This allows one to really feel the nourishment and revitalization of the herbs. I have found that taking the herbs in the morning and afternoon works best for me. They can also be used at night as they don’t contain any stimulates and can help people to sleep deeper and more peacefully in most cases. There is a science to taking the herbs as well. Daoists posit that the herbs are absorbed at a deeper level when they are consumed with animal products such as milk or meat (of course this doesn’t work for vegans & vegetarians). Yogis would advise taking the herbs when the body is in a yang state -- when one is breathing primarily out of the right-nostril, which occurs every two-hours, as the body has more digestive fire at these times. I think what’s important for most people is simplicity and so long as they are taking the herbs, they will receive a benefit. You can safely take the herbs several times a day, up to 4-5 servings at a time. All superior tonic herbs have been shown to be very safe in larger doses. Personally, I take 3-4 scoops and make a simple tincture out of them 2-3 times per day and this allows me to always be sure I’m taking the herbs and seeing their benefits and nourishment.
Q;
If you are a coffee or tea drinker can you get the same benefits from taking these herbs?

Superfoodies energy, and is a vegetarian source of B-12. To boot, maca has high levels of bioavailable calcium and magnesium and is great for remineralization. Maca is a fertility enhancer and is well known for improving libido and sexual function, especially in men. For this reason, it’s earned the nickname “nature’s Viagra.”
Maca root
In the last few years the Maca root has risen to fame, reaching North America and gracing the shelves of our local grocery
stores, and with good reason -- this nutritionally dense root vegetable, from the Peruvian Andes, is a bonafide superfood. It is a relative of the radish and has an aroma similar to butterscotch. Well known for its ability to enhance strength and endurance, Maca was sacred to the Incas and has been used as a food and medicine in South America for centuries. The Maca root can be eaten, baked or roasted, prepared as a soup, or used for making a fermented drink called maca chicha. It can also be found in powdered form, and a teaspoon or so can be added to beverages, smoothies, puddings, and raw food recipes to give them a boost. Maca contains large amounts of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and all of the essential amino acids. It is rich in B-vitamins, which provide
Due to an over abundance of environmental estrogens, many people’s hormones are a bit out of whack, a problem Maca root can help balance. It works as an adaptogen, which means that it responds to different bodies’ needs individually. If you’re producing too much of a particular hormone, Maca can help regulate the production downward, while if you’re producing too little, it can regulate the production upward. Maca stimulates and nourishes the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which are the “master glands” of the body. These glands actually regulate the other glands, so when in tune, they can bring balance to the adrenal, thyroid, pancreas, ovarian and testicular glands. Maca root has also been proven beneficial for all sorts of hormonal problems including PMS, menopause, and hot flashes. Since hormones regulate many things including mood, growth, sexual development, and tissue function, and play a role in many diseases, like cancer and depression, incorporating Maca root into your diet seems like a no brainer. Recipe: 6 oz of coconut water 3 plump strawberries 1 banana 1 tsp bee pollen 1/2 tbs Goji berries 1 tsp Maca powder 1 tsp of Manuka honey or 1 pitted date.
