Creating knowledge and awareness of agro-ecology - This issue of Agriculturas demonstrates how agro-ecology recognises and respects different ways of knowing and seeks to create new knowledge by building connections between local wisdom, popular and scientific knowledge. The articles in this issue showcase new forms of interaction and knowledge creation between farmers, teachers and extension agents. These examples break from the past five decades of rural development and agriculture that has been dominated by a linear model of technology transfer.
A couple of articles outline initiatives taking place within educational institutions. For example, students and teachers at the Federal University of Viçosa are creating more space to discuss and debate agro- ecology and a programme at the Pará campus of the Federal institute of Education, Science and Technology picks up momentum with greater family farmer participation.
